School is getting ready to start and area children will be donning their new cloths and backpacks. The long hot days will soon give way to fall and the start of the next polo season. for the last two years we sponsored the 380Guide Community Cup Challenge at Prestonwood Polo & Country Club in order to help raise money and awareness for Bryan’s House in dallas. This year we have worked with the Ladies Polo Auxiliary of

Texas to bring our efforts home to a denton County organization. We are so pleased that we are a part of the events that will raise money for the Children’s Advocacy Center for denton County. on october 23, 2010 come out and cheer your local team to victory and then return on october 30, 2010 for Polo on the Midway. The proceeds from this event will stay in denton County to help our area children in need. in addition to the polo match, families can enjoy carnival games, bounce houses, shopping in the arts & crafts market, silent auction, divot stomp and much more. Attendees are encouraged to bring a picnic lunch with the beverages of their choice. A concession stand will be available to guests. if you would like to volunteer for this event and help children in need please give us a call and we will get you in touch with the Ladies Polo Auxiliary of Texas or the Children’s Advocacy Center for denton County. We are very excited about this event and the organization that it is benefiting. We hope you will join us in one way or another this october.

When you engage in conversation with the new Main Street director of Pilot Point, Bruce Thomas, you can feel his enthusiasm and commitment to the city. He has a clear vision of the direction he would like to see the city go and grow. Pilot Point is part of the Texas Main Street program that commenced in 1981. This program is coupled with the National Trust for Historic Preservation which has helped make the Texas Main Street Program one of the nation’s most thriving downtown revitalization programs.

Thomas originally came to Pilot Point to retire. He and his wife wanted to find a home with a relaxed pace and somewhere that was a great place for their family to come and visit. This expanding family includes three daughters, one son and 5 grandchildren with another two on the way. After a much searching and consideration, they finally found an area in Pilot Point that met their criteria. When they settled in to their new home they found they truly loved the people, loved their neighbors and loved the area. However, the condition of the square in Pilot Point bothered Thomas. He talked with his wife about his concerns and she told him to do something about it. Well, “do something” is just what he did.

He started conversing with other people in the community. He met with the publisher of the local paper, the city manager

Bruce Thomas

Jodie Linton-Prickett

and joined the rotary Club. He also started having lunch at Jay’s Cafe and visiting with Wes Miller at the farmer’s and Merchant’s Art Gallery. After a while the city posted an opening in the economic development department and Thomas decided to come out of retirement. Thomas had no former city government or planning experience but he came ready for the challenge. Thomas originally moved to Texas from Connecticut where he commuted to his place of employment in New York City. Thomas worked in television marketing and sales, starting his career at CBS. More often than not, Thomas found he was very fortunate at being at the right place at the right time. Thomas also found out that he had a talent for solving very difficult problems. This talent awarded him with finding advertisers and sponsors for some of the more difficult media sales in the industry. one of his toughest challenges was finding just the right company to advertise for a three hour long program which covered education in America. At the time, this program was one of the lowest ranking shows of all time. However, Thomas was able to work with this tough sale and secure Kodak as a sponsor. They were elated because they were also able to introduce current first Lady Barbara Bush who was a strong education supporter. He also secured Chevy to sponsor the Country Music Awards when the awards show was first established. As luck would have it, he met the young new performer Garth Brooks. His hard work put him in the right places to meet interesting people and enjoy amazing events.

As a problem solver and a visionary, Thomas is now at the right place at the right time once again. Thomas has a unique and interesting advantage to take on the challenge of revitalizing downtown Pilot Point because of his extensive background in marketing and advertising.

Currently, Pilot Point finds itself in an exceptional situation, but it was not always so. in the early 80’s Highway 455 between Sanger and Celine was opened after the completion of Lake ray roberts. This new highway diverted traffic around Pilot Point and the casual traffic that once stopped by began to dry up. Local merchants started abandoning downtown as the city began to stagnate. At the peak of the urban sprawl, downtown Pilot Point was all but abandoned however it also became preserved and sheltered.

With the planned expansion of the Tollway and the growth of the 380 Corridor, Pilot Point now finds itself in an ideal strategic location. “Pilot Point is within reach, yet off the beaten track.” says Thomas. “Within reach because we are an hour’s drive from 6 million people and yet we are off the beaten track. We can maintain the small town qualities everyone is looking for like a walkable community, a town where you know your neighbors, a place where you can raise a family or like me, have the family visit.” “My ambition is to revive our marvelous town square and historic district so that is an accurate reflection of Pilot Point’s past while also being a vibrant part of our exciting future.”

Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow, both born in Texas, met on the east side of dallas and were among the most famous of criminals during the time of the Great depression. They captured the imagination of the American press and newspaper readers nationwide. Bonnie and Clyde’s exploits are a travelogue of North Texas. They visited cities all around Pilot Point including Kaufman, Hillsboro, Sherman, Grapevine and denton. They never pulled a robbery in Pilot Point; however some old-timers swore they saw the two buying groceries and gas at times in town. Legend has it that they hid out in the woods around Pilot Point which were then, as they are now, some of the thickest woods in North Texas. it was also said that they hid out in a house belonging to an aunt located on the outskirts of town, which is why they never robbed any business in Pilot Point.

Bonnie and Clyde returned to Pilot Point some thirty-three years later. in 1967 producer and lead actor, Warren Beatty, was looking for quintessential small Texas towns to film Bonnie and Clyde. Many of the actual locations of Bonnie and Clyde robberies had simply disappeared over time or been swallowed by the growth of dallas. Alternative locations were chosen for their perceived authentic look over the actual locations, which had been lost.

The Legend of Bonnie and Clyde

and Their Connections to Pilot Point

10 www.380Guide.com

Page 11: 380 Guide August September Edition

Beatty chose Pilot Point and the Merchants & farmer’s Bank Building for the scene of one of Bonnie and Clyde’s infamous robberies. in addition to the actors, Beatty recruited local Pilot Point citizens to be in the movie.

film critic roger ebert called Bonnie and Clyde “a milestone in the history of American movies, a work of truth and brilliance”. Thought wildly successful it was more than a popular gangster picture. As cinema, Bonnie and Clyde was an innovation. it redefined violence in film. Moreover, although the film is set in the 1930s, Bonnie and Clyde metaphorically related to the 1960s by presenting the idea of resisting the establishment. What thrilled and shocked audiences were the film’s sudden changes of mood from farce to tragedy, from social observation to shocking violence. Set in the 30’s, Bonnie & Clyde was very much a film of the late 60’s, reflecting the turbulence, unrest and mistrust of that era.

Cinema was never the same after Bonnie and Clyde. A watershed film in Hollywood history, and Bonnie and Clyde ignited intense levels of screen violence but also the innovative shifting and mixture of tones within the movie. for the first time gangsters were portrayed as simultaneously loveable and funny as well as sick and dysfunctional.

The American film institute ranked Bonnie and Clyde as the #27 Greatest Movie of All Time. Warner Brothers had so little faith in the film, however, that, in an unprecedented move, it offered its first-time producer, Warren Beatty 40% of the gross instead of a minimal fee. The movie then went on to gross over $50 million.

Just walking through the doors of eckert Hyundai seems more like walking into a ski lodge than walking into a car dealership. in 1995, brothers Mike and Mark eckert started eckert Hyundai in a very small building on i-35e in denton. At that time, the Hyundai brand was still in its young stages. With the growth and recognition of Hyundai, the eckerts have moved into their new facility and have seen sales increase by 25 percent. Clients say that doing business with eckert Hyundai is unlike any other car car-buying experience they’ve ever had. The dealership’s low- pressure and family-type atmosphere has allowed eckert Hyundai to become one of the top-rated customer satisfaction dealerships in the nation, as well as one of the few A-rated car dealerships in the dallas-fort Worth area. The casual atmosphere at the dealership, where the sales staff wears shorts, golf shirts and tennis shoes, seems to be paying off. As the summer’s temperatures have risen, so have eckert Hyundai’s sales. However, there is more than comfort behind the dress code as the facility’s informality goes beyond showroom attire. “We’re more about team attitude and less about high pressure sales tactics,” says Mark eckert. douglas Peyton, the fleet and Leasing Manager, has been with eckert Hyundai since 2009. After selling Lexus for many years, he has chosen to sell Hyundais due to the outstanding craftsmanship and quality. With vehicles like the all-new SoNATA, GeNeSiS, and TuCSoN, and with the eQuuS coming out later this year, doug is very excited to see just how far the Hyundai brand can go. Please stop in and ask for doug Peyton. Let him show you how doing business with eckert Hyundai will be the best car-buying experience you have ever had. for more information contact douglas Peyton at 940.243.6205 or visit www.eckerthyundai.com.

Hands down one of my favorite foods any where (not limited to the 380 corridor) comes from the Prairie House located off Highway 380 in Cross roads, TX. i could write an entire article over my affection for their Bandidos ($7.95 full order). i have tried like items elsewhere and you just can’t duplicate perfection. if you like spicy you will love these mouth-watering jalapenos stuffed with jalapeno cheese, wrapped in succulent chicken and bacon then slathered in barbecue sauce with a side of homemade ranch for dipping. These bites of rightness are served up in a small cast iron skillet. i am not sure why, but i am sure you will agree that by presenting something to the table in the sizzling hot pan in which it was just cooked usually ups the enjoyment ante of any dish. Another very popular entrée is the fall off the bone, melt in your mouth, slow smoked baby back ribs ($16.95 full order). The wood fired mesquite smoker with no gas involved cooks these babies up in appetizer size (9.95). one thing you are sure to find a the Prairie House is consistency and quality. The steaks such as the six ounce filet ($14.95) are hormone free, grain fed and wet aged for 28 days before they are cooked to order and served with a salad and choice of potato to your table. if your looking for something different try the Buffalo burger ($9.95) a half pond of lean bison mesquite grilled to specification served with your choice of potato

The 100 degree days in Denton have begun, which means more than the start of summer and the opening of the neighborhood pool. It also means an increased risk of heat related illness, such as heat stroke, that results in hundreds of hospitalizations every year in Texas.

I was so excited. My search was finally over. i had been surfing the net for a while trying to find a place to celebrate my son’s 4th birthday. i was having a rough time because everything seemed to be designed for girls. Then i clicked on Kreative Kidz. Kreative Kidz is a unique place based on some wonderful ideas. While reading, i discovered it was designed to create a magical birthday involving your child’s favorite characters through costumes and decorations. As i looked through their photo gallery, pictures with the themes of princesses, fairies and cowboys passed by. However, it was when i saw a picture of boys dressed up in super hero costumes that i knew i had found the perfect place for my son. i did not hesitate, but called up Kreative Kidz right away. The receptionist was very friendly and i felt even better about my choice. After setting up the date for the party, i made an appointment to tour the building and get the specifics of the party. When the tour was done, i picked out plates and napkins as well as party favors which were all included in the price. After much anticipation, the day of the party finally arrived. Huge smiles appeared as soon as we walked in the door and were greeted by our host and hostess..….Spiderman and Bat Girl! They introduced themselves and escorted us

to a room with a bounce house. The kids didn’t hesitate for a second as they took off their shoes and scramble right in. While they were bouncing, i was thinking what a great way this was to keep the kids entertained until the other guests arrived. finally, Spiderman had us all line up and move to the room where the majority of the party would take place. Walking into the room you couldn’t help but gasp. it was surrounded with tons of super hero posters, pictures, and toys. There was a runway ending with the birthday boy’s seat. Life sized cardboard cut outs of Superman and Power rangers were placed next to the chair, creating the perfect photo opportunity. in the background, the theme songs to movies and cartoons starring super heroes were playing. The children were taken to a rack filled with several super hero costumes including Spiderman, iron Man, Superman and Batman. The girl’s costumes included Wonder Women, Bat Girl and Superwomen. As some children were finishing getting dressed, those who were done got to choose a tattoo and get it placed on their hand. i noted how this was another clever way to make the time move a little faster for those who had to wait for the others to get done. With costumes and tattoos on, it was time for the party games to begin. Spiderman laid shapes in a circle on the floor

and explained they would be playing musical shapes. The children walked around in a circle and when the super hero themed music stopped they would find a shape. The kids loved it and the best part was the fact that no one “lost.” if someone couldn’t find a shape, they stood in the middle of the circle and did something silly as the others followed their lead. Next, we moved on to my son’s favorite game, the obstacle course. it was a simple course, but the best part was Spiderman waiting at the end. After the course was completed, the children had to try and hit him in the leg with the foam swords they were given. Spiderman did a great job eluding them for a little bit before his leg was hit. The kids were laughing hysterically. i was unaware of this, but Spiderman sleeps with rubber duckies. i guess he was so exhausted from the party that he fell asleep. Bat Girl told the kids she thought it would be funny if they snuck up and grabbed one from him. Spiderman is a restless sleeper. right when they went to grab a duckie he would turn over and start mumbling something. even though our kids were super hero’s they got scared easily. Spiderman woke up and got his duckies back and then he brought out his parachute. The birthday boy sat in the middle while the rest of the kids made slow waves then changed to fast waves. Next, all the boys joined the birthday boy in the middle. Afterwards, the boys got off and the girls got their turn. At the end, all the children got to visit “Bat Girl’s Cave” by throwing the parachute up in the air and sitting underneath it. our final game was knocking down iron man with foam missiles. Spiderman handed out the missiles as Bat Girl stood by an iron Man punching bag. Missiles were thrown until iron

Man was knocked over. With all the games finished, it was time to head to the cake room. it was another room completely decorated with super heroes. The table had centerpieces based

on the theme and a huge Happy Birthday Banner with Spiderman in the forefront was hanging right behind the birthday boy’s seat. With cake finished, party favors were passed out to complete the birthday party. We had chosen a Spiderman book and erasable marker board for the boys and purses with necklaces and lip gloss for the girls. Needless to say, it was a super party, created by heroic people, giving us of lots of

legendary memories. for more information you can visit their website at www.kreativekidzpartyz.com. Kreative Kidz will also be having an open house September 12th from 1:00-3:00.

Are you serious about losing weight? You can virtually melt away your FAT without dieting or excessive exercising. This is the best weight loss secret to come along in years - when you’re talking about FAST EFFECTIVE weight loss.

HOLD ON!!! You might be afraid the “solution”

will be worse than the problem, but let me assure you, it’s not! When you schedule an appointment you’re going to receive something that NOT only helps you lose weight, but also helps your appearance, your face, your complexion and even your body structure.

Listen, I am a regular practicing doctor in Little Elm, and I love helping people, just like you, lose that stubborn weight, without dieting, and then how to keep it off - permanently.

Safe & Easy! My exclusive weight loss

management system is completely SAFE and has been proven to work. It is based on scientific principles that cause almost immediate changes and is strictly administered along common sense protocols.

Here’s what most people don’t understand. When you’re heavy, you lose your strength, vitality, and you can become feeble. And on top of that you can age prematurely because your “fat” cells clog your body’s vital organs. That will change after you start utilizing this system. You may be like some people who have lost their

figure due to this “fat” clogging weight gain. The problem is, most overweight people are unable to find a simple, easy to follow system to reduce their fat and then keep it off. Even their coordination, daily movement and attractiveness are destroyed with this weight gain. That will all change when you start using this system.

Here is what I can do for you. First my staff will send you a form

to fill out before you schedule an appointment. This is so you and I are on the same page, before you ever step foot in my office. You won’t have to make any radical changes in your lifestyle with this program, have surgery, or take any harmful drugs. Your treatments will be private and you will start to lose 1-2 pounds per day, depending on your size, age, condition of your body and follow through. You will consult with me personally on a weekly basis for follow up and questions. Once you’ve reached your desired weight, you’ll have your shape back, have more energy, and you’ll have your self-esteem back. Doesn’t get any better than that.

Get Rid Of YOUR FAT Now!

Lose 1-2 Pounds of FAT Per Day!!!

Reserve your spot today. Call the office now to have access to this amazing technology. (10 spots available!)

“I have been on Dr. Cox's plan for about a month. I have lost 13 inches overall and about 6 pounds. I’ve also had my blood work-up done and the cholesterol and triglycerides were both very good and everything else was in line. Thanks Dr. Cox!" ~Thirla Johnson, Little Elm, TX.
