President’s Olympiad Report

On 26th April 2010, the Khanty-Mansiysk Organising Committee granted authorization to the I.C.S.C. authorization to respond to an invitation via the F.I.D.E. Website for participation of two teams (Open and Ladies) to the 39th FIDE Chess Olympiad, Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia 19th September - 4th October 2010. It had taken one month of electronic mail correspondence to confirm the eligibility of the ICSC. Eventually on 29th May 2010, the ICSC submitted the registration of the Men’s and Ladies team to the Organising committee of Khanty-Mansiysk: ICSC Men’s Team were as follows:

The Chess Olympiads witnessed an astonishing entry of 152 nations, 1294 competitors of which 797 are titled, including no fewer than 254 GM, 65 WGM, 159 IM, and 90 WIM. 34 players are rated 2700 or more, and 117 are rated at least 2600! The 149 Men's and 115 Ladies teams contested in accordance to the Swiss System over 11 rounds, both sections were played over four boards, with one player nominated as reserve. The days of play were: 21-25, 27-30 September, 1 and 3 October, with all rounds starting at 15:00 hours local time but the final round commencing at 11:00 hours. It was a great joy for the ICSC to participate in one of the most prestigious chess events in the world, enhanced by the presence of the Russian Vladimir Kramnik, the Norwegian Magnus Carlsen, the Bulgarian Veselin Topalov, the Armenian Levon Aronian, the Azerbaijani Shakhriyar Mamedyrarov, the Ukrainian Vassily Ivanchuk, the English Michael Adams, the Israeli Boris Gelfand, the American Hikaru Nakamura and the woman players such as the China’s Yifan Hou, the Hungarian Judit Polgar, the Russian Tatiana Kosintseva, the Bulgarian Antoaneta Stefanova, the Ukrainian Kateryna Lahno amongst many others.

I attended as ICSC President to the FIDE Disabled meeting along with the new ICSC Board Member Pavel Parfenov. And in the presence of the IBCA President Ludwig Beutelhoff, IPCA President Zbigniew Pilimon, the major topic was the forming of a new event, the 1st World Chess Games for Disabled to be held in Dresden, Germany in the month of October 2011 with the aim of improving the activities for chess players with disabilities. On the first rest day of 26th September 2010, the ICSC visited the city Khanty-Mansiysk, capital of Ugra, and the land of the Mammoth, being one of the main historical sights of the town. In the Men’s section, out of the 149 participating nations, the ICSC recorded a fantastic achievement in finishing in 48th place with 13 points. This enabled us to capture the silver medal position in the FIDE category prizes “C” band, behind Uruguay. In the Women’s section, the ICSC finished in 59th place out of 115 participating teams, a most creditable performance. I am indeed delighted with the positive performance of all the I.C.S.C. players.
