Edgar Yanez and Hunter Cockrel scored twice apiece, with Yanez notching the go-ahead goal late in the rst half, and Jon- athan Emmons had a goal and an assist as Heath rolled to a 5-1 vic- tory over Tilghman and moved a step closer to clinching the top seed for the district tournament, which it hosts in early October. “We’re just all really together,” Emmons said. “We seem to be like pieces of a puzzle that t to- gether perfectly. STORRS, Conn. — Jim Calhoun retired as Connecticut’s basketball coach Thurs-day, closing a 26-year career at the school with thanks to everyone who helped him turn UConn from an athletic backwater into a national power that won three na-tional titles. The retirement of the 70-year-old Hall of Famer was announced on the court in Storrs, where Calhoun racked up many of his 873 total wins.

In thanking administrators, players, fans and his family, Calhoun said he feels blessed and is grateful that “you trusted us.”

Calhoun will take a transition appoint-ment as assistant to athletic director Warde Manuel.

and Allen Central also wait-ing in its pool.

“This is a new experience for myself and the program and these girls, so we really don’t know what to expect,” Bombers coach Adam Solo-mon said. “We don’t know a lot about these teams and they don’t know a lot about us, so that’s a good thing. We know if we don’t play well, we can be beat. We know if we play well, we can also compete with any-

body.”The Marshals (10-8)

are one of the two teams to defeat the Bombers this season, winning in two sets during a tournament at Apollo. Thursday night, the win was anything but easy for the Bombers.

“I kept it positive and I told them I didn’t care about the end result,” Solo-mon said. “But I kept telling them, you guys have to play well, we’re not invincible.”

After being evenly matched in the fi rst set, the

Marshals dominated much of the second set, though Ballard Memorial closed strongly. The Bombers played better defensively, which led to more offen-sive opportunities the fi nal three games..

Elizabeth Goodin and Wiggins led the Bombers with 20 kills apiece, while Wiggins had seven digs and Goodin had six.

every game,” Gregory said.

Around the horn

n Paducah Tilghman will start sophomore Aaron Armstrong at quarterback against Crittenden County tonight, with starter Jor-dan Tyler given a couple of weeks to recover from a strained MCL.

The Tornado will also get their fi rst look at Joeshawn Starks, a highly touted transfer from Lone Oak who just became eligible as a receiver and defensive back.

“We’re not going to ask (Armstrong) to do too much,” Tilghman coach Randy Wyatt said. “His fi rst

job is to take care of the football.”

■ Massac County begins River-to-River Confer-ence play by hosting West Frankfort, which is 1-2 with its lone win coming against winless Nashville, The teams have one common opponent — Anna-Jones-boro beat the Patriots 54-18 last week after knocking off West Frankfort 35-0 on opening night.

■ Calloway County is 3-1 going into tonight’s game at Marshall County and seeks to set its season high in wins over the last four seasons. The Lakers were 11-3 and reached the Class 4A state semifi nals in 2008 but haven’t been better than 3-8 in a season since then.

■ Christian County’s wild

42-41 win over Lone Oak, a game in which the Colo-nels kicked a fi eld goal in the fi nal seconds to take the victory, was the talk of last week.

The Trigg County-Caldwell County contest had the potential to match it — the game was called with just under six minutes remaining and Trigg hav-ing scored 17 unanswered points to take a 38-37 lead.

Both teams elected not to resume the game on Satur-day, with both teams having several banged-up players and not wanting to risk fur-ther injury in a non-district contest.

Consumer sentimentThe University of Michigan

releases its monthly consumer sentiment index for Septem-ber today.

The snapshot of Ameri-cans’ willingness to spend is expected to show an increase for the second month in a row.

Consumer spending drives roughly 70 percent of economic growth, so another uptick in consumer sentiment will bolster hope that the economy is gaining traction.

Toda

y

Spending more?Consumers increased their

retail spending in July by the most in five months after a frugal spring.

And economists anticipate that the Commerce Department will report today that they continued to open their wallets in August at the same rate. A group of 18 retailers ranging from Target to Macy’s reported last month that August sales rose 6 percent – the industry’s best performance since March.

Eye on pricesThe Labor Department’s consumer price index hasn’t

shown an increase since March.Energy costs fell in July, offsetting a slight increase in food

prices. But economists forecast that the latest index, out today, will show that prices rose in August. Gas prices have been rising, and a drought in the Midwest has damaged corn, soybeans and other crops, which is expected to have pushed up food costs. Source: FactSet

Priming the pumpThe Federal Reserve made an aggressive

move Thursday. The economy continues to struggle in the

aftermath of the deepest recession since the 1930s and simply isn’t expanding fast enough to reduce high unemployment. In an effort to stimulate the economy, the Fed said it will buy $40 billion a month in mortgage-backed securities

for as long as it deems necessary — a third round of quantitative easing known as QE3. The central bank also extended its plan of super-low short-term interest rates until mid-2012.

Fed Chairman Bernanke made clear that higher stock prices are among the Fed’s goals in buying

bonds, noting that stock gains increase Ameri-cans’ wealth and typically lead individuals and businesses to spend and invest more.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Ti-tans running back Chris Johnson knows the num-bers look pretty bad.

The man nicknamed CJ2K for his 2,006-yard rushing season in 2009 started this season with just 11 carries for a career-worst

4 yards in a 34-13 loss to New England. As bad as last season was after his hold-out for a contract extension, Johnson never ran for less than 13 yards in a game.

And he feels all eyes are on him when the offense struggles.

“When things don’t go right, I know everything’s

going to get pointed at me because I’m the main focal point,” Johnson said Thurs-day. “I got a big contract or whatever. But at the end of the day, I just know I got to continue to work just like all my other offensive (team-mates) here.”

After fi nishing last sea-son with a career-low 1,047

yards, Johnson spent this offseason working in the Ti-tans’ program in Nashville and learning all the nuances of coordinator Chris Palm-er’s offense. Improving a running game that ranked next to last in the NFL was one of Tennessee’s top goals as well.

The Titans started out

the fi rst drive with Johnson running fi ve times for 13 yards.

They quickly fell behind 21-3, and Johnson rushed only six more times the rest of the game. Johnson had a team-high six catches for 47 yards, but Palmer said obvi-ously they have to run the ball better.

The good news is the Ti-tans’ issues can be fi xed, even if the solution sounds similar to what they said all last season.

eight games, threw for eight touchdowns and played a signifi cant role in Ken-tucky’s fi rst win at Auburn since 1961 and fi rst at Geor-gia since 1977.

The momentum didn’t last. Hartline beat Newton out for the starting job in 2010, which led to Newton attempting just 43 passes on the season.

Hartline graduated and Newton rose to the top of the depth chart, but he had

a disastrous 2011 opener against Western Kentucky (7 of 18 for 97 yards, three in-terceptions) and was mostly ineffective until a shoulder injury forced him to the sidelines in late October.

When Smith won the starting job in training camp this season, Newton and the Kentucky coaching staff be-gan searching for ways to get him on the fi eld.

“We don’t have many guys with his size and speed,” Kentucky offensive coordi-nator Randy Sanders said.

“You don’t have enough guys like that and I told him last spring if he wasn’t the start-ing quarterback he wasn’t going to stand by me, he was going to do something. He’s had a great attitude about it.”

Newton lined up at H-back several times in Ken-tucky’s 47-14 victory over Kent State and is expected to see more snaps there Sat-urday night against Western Kentucky and as the season moves along.

Newton is taking it all in stride.

“I think you just kind of have to,” Newton said. “I’ve seen a lot of good times and bad times, been a part of a lot of good things and had some success. I’ve been in the background and been able to watch the young guys do some good things. I’m just enjoying being out here.

“He gives me a lot or credit, probably more than I deserve, but I’m not going to say, ‘No Randy, you’re wrong. It’s good they think I can help because I think I can help too.”

Dear Annie: I work in a small offi ce. One person douses herself in perfume. It makes my eyes water and my nose run, and sometimes I have sneezing fi ts. Every-one comments about it be-hind her back, but no one will bring it up to her face, although I have casually mentioned it to her in con-versation a few times.

Years ago, my doctor told me he had a patient who was so sensitive to scents that she had an allergic attack and died — right in the hospital. — Suffocating in Louisville.

Dear Suffocating: Some folks have a di-minished sense of smell and do not realize how strong their perfume is. Those who insist on wearing a scent should remember that a drop is suffi cient. And with so many folks suffer-ing from allergies these days, one really must be careful.

If you have supervi-sors or a human re-sources department, please ask whether a notice can go out sug-gesting that employees not wear perfumes.Dear Annie: I am a teenager in high school with two close friends, “Emma” and “Vi-enna.” Emma was recently diagnosed with OCD and bi-polar disorder.

I will often get a call from Emma saying she is lonely and needs someone to talk to. She likes to reminisce, regretting things she said and did in the past. I try to comfort her by keeping her company.

I have just started a new high school and am no lon-ger with Emma and Vienna. I know we can’t begin to understand what it’s like to have both OCD and bipo-lar disorder, but we can’t

live like this. — A Worried Friend.

Dear Friend: Those with bipolar disorder often have periods of de-pression. If Emma also has OCD, she may be-come fi xated on certain negative thoughts dur-ing these times. While you can be reassuring and supportive, there is only so much you can do to combat Emma’s in-nate doubts.

We trust that her parents are making sure that she is getting appropriate medical care. Please try to be patient with her, but understand that not all friendships survive high school.

Please e-mail your ques-tions to [email protected], or write to: Annie’s Mailbox, c/o Cre-ators Syndicate, 737 3rd Street, Hermosa Beach, CA 90254.

ONLINE NEWS REPORTER

The Paducah Sun is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, sex, age, national origin or disability.

The Paducah Sun is seeking an online newspaper reporter who can write a story and take photos and also update a website and report on its operation, manage social media and shoot video. Since it is a web reporting position, the ideal candidate is one who can stop work on a project, run on breaking news, display it on multiple platforms — under an editor’s supervision — handle follow ups and pick right up where the project work stopped without missing a beat.

A strong desire to enhance community news is essential. Also, a background in various reporting styles — hard and breaking news; feature writing; and business, health and sports — is a plus. The web reporter position is a web-only responsibility. This reporter will not write for the printed newspaper. However work published for the web may be used or developed for the print daily.

A journalism degree, or English or social science equivalent with experience in a newspaper newsroom and proven skills in maintaining high-traffic websites is a must. Experience with the Adobe Creative Suite and front-end web production software — for video, audio and interactivity — are highly preferred.

The Paducah Sun and paducahsun.com are publications of Paxton Media Group LLC, the publisher of 32 daily newspapers and numerous associated weeklies in the South and Midwest. Pay is based on experience within constraints of market size. Benefits include 401(k) with company match; life, disability and a choice of health plans. Advancement opportunities exist within the organization.

Please email resumes and work samples, with the words “Online News Reporter position” in the subject line to:
