    3CT Fall Event

The 2018 3CT Fall Event will be hosted by the Clarksville Friends of

    Photography on October 26-27-28, 2018

    To Register: https://3ct.org/

For event details and updates click on this post:

    https://www.facebook.com/groups/cameraclubcounciloftennessee/permalink/812034695654730/

Rooms reserved for 3CT members at Riverview Inn in historic downtown Clarks-

ville have a special rate of $119 per night. The hotel is within walking distance to

restaurants, shops, free parking and has a complimentary breakfast. Any 3CT

rooms not reserved by September 12, 2018, will be released to other guests.

Reservations can be canceled up to 24 hours prior to the check-in date. Since it

is homecoming weekend at Austin Peay State University, it will be difficult to find a

hotel room in Clarksville that weekend. So, even if you are unsure about attend-

ing, go ahead and make your reservation NOW!

The following categories are being considered:

    (1) Historic downtown Clarksville (lots of unique architecture, public art, river

views, etc.); (2) rural sites to include Historic Collinsville (a "village" of historic pre-

Civil War buildings and furnishings); (3) a "military" option including the Don Pratt

Museum at Fort Campbell (historic aircraft, Army equipment, etc.), Fort Defiance

(a Civil War earthen fort), and possibly Fort Donelson battlefield and cemetery at

nearby Dover, TN; and (4) a tour of local micro-breweries, distilleries, and a win-

ery; and (5) the annual Hay Bale Trail in nearby Todd County, Ky (unique art using

    hay bales).

On Friday night after dinner, we plan to photograph the railroad bridge that cross-

es the Cumberland River. The bridge is illuminated by LED lights that change col-

ors continuously. Great opportunity to get beautiful reflections of the bridge in the

    water below.

    Exposure Challenges

    Making Sense of the Choices

Sometimes, a photographer faces low light situations and dimly lit venues. Places like this include indoor ball games, evening or night outdoor ball games, parties, weddings … and the list goes ON and ON! Situations like these have haunted photographers for decades. Shooting in low light has always been a challenge even back in the days of film cameras. Adding to this difficult chal-lenge, many times we can’t use a tripod because of limited space and seating arrangements. So, from this point on we’ll assume that a tripod cannot be used. Making the right choices in your camera settings is the first thing we need to address to successfully shoot sharp images in low light. This part of our photo-graphic education is often overlooked, especially in today’s electronic and digi-tal age. Cameras are now more of a computer than a camera, so we have to be diligent in how we use this gear and all of the things it can supposedly do for us. Oddly, the better photographers we become, the less of the stuff we use. First and foremost – we have to change the mindset that we have about digital cameras. “I’m going to just shoot and see what the camera does.” How often have you said that in your mind? I’m sure you’ve said it too often. We all have at some point. Change this thinking to “I’m going to make the camera do this for me” instead. Taking control is SO important. In fact, it’s the first step in bridging the gap from amateur to pro. We have to make the right choices and selections of ALL camera settings to solve these low light shooting situations. There are only a few settings we can control on our cameras. They are: 1. ISO 2. F-stop 3. Shutter Speed 4. Lens Choice That’s it. Now, seeing this should at least help you understand that this is not that hard. There are only four things to consider. Every time you change one you may have to change the others.

    Exposure Challenges - Continued

Put Things in Order The thought process (something I talk about a lot) is the secret in moving up the skill ladder in photography. This is a behavior that divides the “really great” and the “not so great” photographers. When preparing to shoot, here are the steps/thought processes we all need to use. 1. Pick the lens you want/need to use

    2. Choose the correct shutter speed for this lens

    3. Choose the f-stop you prefer to use

    4. Choose the ISO that makes sense

It’s crucial that you make these decisions in this order – ALWAYS! Let’s discuss each of these now, and try to make sense of why we do things in this order. Picking the right lens to shoot at any venue is important. In fact, by choosing the right lens, we somewhat guarantee the proper results in cropping and composi-tions. Once you’ve chosen this lens, the second decision we make is what shutter speed to use. We arrive, very simply, at the shutter speed by using the shutter speed formula that we’ve hopefully learned over the years of education. Here is the rule: Lens Length X’s 2 = Shutter Speed For example: 200 mm lens = 1/400 Shutter Speed. Do this religiously! This is the secret to creating images that are sharp and clear. Shutter speeds that are too slow will ruin photographs. Images will be soft and ap-pear to be blurry because of camera movement with longer lenses. Next, choose an f-stop that works for what you are doing. In most cases at these low light events controlling depth of field is not crucially important and choosing your widest f-stop is a good idea. So, use f4, 5.6 or whatever your widest f-stop might be. Plus, remember that using smaller f-stops (f22 / f16) only creates an ex-posure requiring longer shutter speeds – and, a high ISO such as ISO 1600 or even higher. If so, that’s OK. Use it! Do a few test photos to determine you have found the right ISO. Remember; do NOT change the other settings.

  • 5

    Exposure Challenges - Continued

So, you’ve chosen your widest f-stop, i.e. f4, and now you are ready to address the last step, which is finding the right ISO that fits with ALL of your previous choices. DO NOT change the shutter speed or F-stop at this point. Change ONLY the ISO to make the exposures work. When you have determined your ISO by testing, you are ready to shoot. If you find that conditions change while you are shooting do NOT change anything but the ISO. Once you figure out the logic of this system, you’ll be able to do it easily every time you are faced with a difficult photographic situation. This process needs to become a normal behavior when attempting to shoot in low light venues. Comments and questions are welcome. Send them to Jeff at [email protected]

Dave Reasons, 3CT Webmaster Fall greetings to you all. I don’t know about everyone else, but Fall is my favorite season to photograph all the colorful things that nature provides. It just seems to me that the Fall light is softer, and the shadows are not as harsh as Summer. Then there is the added bounty of Mother Nature have the wonderful display of color. Recently I ran across five rules that you should know to shoot landscapes because you can’t break the rules if you don’t know what they are. • Identify and use a strong foreground element to bring the eye into the picture. • Use a leading line to draw the viewer into the scene. • The various elements in the picture should not overlap if possible. • Lighting should be warm—early or late in the day is best. • Minimize the sky if it is clear or has little of interest in it.

On another note, I found a listing of the 500 best photography websites. It was compiled by John Lewell and can be found here: 500 Best Photo Sites Just one link brings you the whole world of photography in a tightly-organized, 7-page direc-tory. And just today I ran across this handy guide to some great apps for your iPhone or Droid that might be of help and fun to try out.

Joe Anderson has been into photography both as a hobby and professionally since 1958. Since retirement in the late 90s, he has traveled all over Europe, Scandinavia and Iceland enjoying pho-tography. Six years ago he started traveling the States in his motorhome and volunteering for US Fish and Wildlife Service at Refuges from coast to coast. This has given him a golden opportunity to cap-ture unforgettable images. He would like to share this great journey with you at a photo workshop. This workshop will be on Sat, Sept 8th. It will be held at the Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge Visi-tor Center on Highway 67 in Decatur AL. The program will start promptly at 9 AM in the auditori-um. If you plan to attend please be there at least 15 minutes early. The first phase of this work-shop will cover how to photograph birds. The program will start with a 45-minute slideshow presentation showing camera settings, ways to attract birds and things that may not be consid-ered regarding your camera and lens which can improve your photos. After a short break we will have a 45-minute slideshow on how to photograph landscapes. After both slideshows, there will be time for questions and answers. You should bring a lunch and your camera, lens and tripod that you use for birds and landscape. After lunch, we will go out to try some of the things covered in the morning. The following Sat evening, the15th, we will have three outside events; photographing star trails, photographing bugs at night and light painting. Place and time are yet to be determined and you will be notified by email. For the 15th you will need a camera, macro lens or magnifier for your lens, and a lens such as a 24-105mm along with tripod. There is no cost for this two-day workshop. If you would like a DVD of the slideshows and other information covered it can be bought on the 8th or 15th for $5.00. I must know at time of sign up if you would like a DVD. The payment for DVD can only be cash or check made out to Wheeler Wildlife Refuge Association. It will be required to email Joe Anderson ([email protected]) no later than Sept 1st if you are planning to come as we can only accommodate 200. Please mention at that time if you are inter-ested in a DVD. Joe Anderson naturethruphotos.com

    Worldwide Photowalk

    Historic Lawrenceburg, TN (US)

    Date/Time: Saturday, October 6th, 2018 | 9:30 am - 12:30 pm

Where We Will Meet: Restaurant at the state park for orientation

Where The Walk Will End: Restaurant at the state park for buffet lunch

Questions: You can email us at [email protected] and we’ll get back to you as soon as we can. Just know that we get a lot of emails, so it might take a day or so to get back to you if it ’s a heavy mail day.

    About This Walk

This destination is about an hour or so from Franklin (about 68 miles) so check Google maps and allow adequate driving time. We meet at 9:30 am at the restaurant at David Crockett State Park. This allows you the pleasure of driving through a beautiful park close to the Lawrenceburg town square. Coffee will be available (please have $3.50 in cash handy) as we do our orientation. We’ll have name tags for each registered photowalker. Michael Pilkinton, who led a Photowalk in Law-renceburg a couple of years ago, will give us some inside hints. We’ll plan on 15 minutes to drive back to the town square to park and begin your 2-hour official Scott Kelby PhotoWalk. Name tags will be identified with Groups A, B, C and D so that you’ll have smaller groups as you tackle some of the special venues that will be open on Saturday just for us. These special venues are: Crock-ett Theater – interior remodeled back to the early 1940’s, Jail House Museum – take a preview on this back issue of Tennessee Crossroads.

    https://video.wnpt.org/video/tennessee-crossroads-3204-2bkbdp/

Then there is the birthplace of Southern Gospel music – the James D. Vaughan Museum on the third floor of the Chamber of Commerce building on the square. As a special extra, our friend, Mi-chael Pilkerton has arranged for us to visit the Garrett House restored meticulously to the 1840’s era. We expect to have a model in period costume here – exterior shots only anticipated – this link should tell you about the house: https://www.eventective.com/lawrenceburg-tn/the-garrett-house-650735.html

By this time you have had a great walk around the square and beyond and your watch indicates 12:15 pm – time to head back to the park for a buffet lunch which will be $13.21 per person. This includes the buffet, drink, tax, and gratuity. We’ll ask for a show of hands at our orientation meet-ing before we start our PhotoWalk.

If you are new to MY photowalks, please send me an e-mail to [email protected] – as we will need to be in touch about a number of things to help make your experience great. We will be given a deadline for each of our photowalkers to upload his/her best image – and our judge for the past ten walks has been Jerry Atnip, noted professional photographer who also judges Williamson County Fair and Tennessee State Fair photography contests. We will submit the best of Law-renceburg to Scott Kelby for judging along with probably more than 1000 such entries worldwide.

Here is where this walk is really different. Jerry will pick 13 runners-up to form the Court of Honor. Our winner plus 13 comprising the Court of Honor will exhibit their framed images for the month of December at the Williamson County Library in Franklin. This exhibit moves to the Square Market and Café in Columbia for the month of January – and at a location to be announced in Lawrence-burg all of February. But that is not all. Each of our photowalkers will send me a headshot, brief bio, five images with captions – including the best shot used in the judging. These will be format-ted into a cocktail type book printed on demand by Copy Solutions, Inc. in Franklin. Target cost for these books is about $30.00. Court of Honor participants should plan to deliver their framed imag-es at a reception to be held at the Williamson County Public Library on November 29 at 6 pm – and printed copies of the book will be delivered to each person who orders on in advance. (You can see the need for us to be passing more information as we proceed via e-mail). PS – when the PhotoWalk is over, be sure to note Oktoberfest will be in full swing – and you may want to take a buggy ride through Amish country.

Safety first – walk in pairs and never alone. It is a good idea to carpool. Leave early so we can get started with orientation on time – we have a lot to cover – if I do not have your e-mail address, please write me ASAP at [email protected] as there will be details to cover individually. Plan on having fun – you’ll find some of us are old friends now, and we welcome newcomers.

This shoot lasts two hours so keep your eye on your watch – shoot and move to the next thing. Do your homework and search out Lawrenceburg on the web – there is so much history here – not just the Trail of Tears route nor David Crockett (Davy is the fictionalized Walt Disney character based on Lawrenceburg’s David). Do not hesitate to write me with your questions – I have friends in town who I can call on for answers.

This will be my 10th Scott Kelby Worldwide PhotoWalk as leader. I was a participant in a Nashville At Night for the very first worldwide photowalk. My career has been in marketing, advertising and sales promotion, and I love to take pictures and play with them in Photoshop. Twenty years ago I founded the Brentwood Camera Club – now the active and vibrant Brentwood Photography Group.
