Part 1: Introduction
3D printing = additive manufacturing is a process of making three
dimensional solid objects from a digital file.
Model
Function:
Furniture, buildings, spare parts, bio-printing (e.g. blood vessel, bones), shoes,
cars (Urbee), make-up (Mink), food (Smoothfood), fashion

Part 2: Modeling for 3D printing – 3D scanner
Digitizing objects
Hardware performing 3D scanning – e.g. Microsoft Kinect, Makerbot digitizer
Future: smart phones with 3D scanner function
Nowadays: 3D scanner prices: from inexpensive DIY to expensive professional
industrial devices

3D printers - methods
Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) – laser melted nylon power
Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM), Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) – melted thermoplastic filament (most
consumer printers)
materials used:
– ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) – food safe, strong, lego plastic,
–PLA (plylactic acid) – biodegradable, derived from corn or other plants; more brittle, higher
melting temperature, harder to work with, not as strong; more properly called a polyester.
–Specialized themoplastic materials: ninjaflex (flexible material), conductive plastic, chocolate, etc.
Stereolithography (SLA) – photo-cured acrylic resin
Powerbed Gluejet Printing - metal power and glue, later annealed with copper

Part 4: Materials for 3D printing
ABS (Fused Deposition Modeling – filament based)
Polyamide
Alumide
Rubberlike
Gold, silver, bronze
Resin
Wood

Selective Laser Sintering – powder based
Lost wax casting - based on a 3D print in
wax and a molt
Stereolithography – liquid polymer based

Mistakes to avoid when designing a 3D model for 3D printing 1. Ignoring material guidelines
2. Ignoring printing technology
3. Ignoring wall thickness
4. Ignoring file resolution
5. Ignoring software guidelines
