1. INTRODUCTION
Hyper-V exists in two variants:
1. As a stand-alone product called Hyper-V Server: Three major versions have so

The stand-alone versions of Hyper-V are free. Hyper-V Server !""( was released on

3i%ratin% from Virtual Server !"" #! S,1 to Hyper-V is a multistep process' ut the

Virtual Server' install the Hyper-V role' and then mi%rate the virtual machines. This
method allows you to use the same hardware durin% the mi%ration without havin% to
copy virtual machine files to another computer' ut it reuires the existin% Virtual
Server and the virtual machines to e ta7en offline' so users will experience
downtime. t also means that if somethin% %oes wron%' the recovery process will not

etter approach is to uild a new Hyper-V server and mi%rate the virtual machines to
the new server. Cou will %ain several advanta%es y usin% this approach:
1& The flexiility to mi%rate virtual machines when needed!& The aility to si>e the hardware to meet the reuirements
5& Do downtime for the existin% Virtual Server host.
The host mi%ration process discussed in the followin% sections focuses on the side-y-
side mi%ration approach versus the mi%rate-in-place approach. The steps in the
process include developin% the specification for the Hyper-V server hardware'
uildin% the Hyper-V servers' and mi%ratin% the confi%uration. )hen you have
completed the mi%ration' you will e ale to add any new features or capailities
