Why, the appeals made and the log- ic used in behalf of a certain individual were powerful m the extreme and undoubt- edly their effect throughout the towu will be greai. —O. K. A very good idea. —The Mr. Conger mentioned in the Re- publican of Nov. 10th as the man who tried to run off goods without paying for them is one of the heaviest shippers from bere; bis agent, Mr. Delong, informs us that they have paid out oyer ten thousand dollars tor farm produce since October 1st, aud we have yet to learn of an instanc* where be baa uot paid for everything purchased. Tbe above mentioned article undoubtedly originated come. It is the hand with ban which effectually imparts a sense of our own truth aud sincerity, and the magnetic influ- ences of our own faith iu what we <. tier, to those we would reclaim. We may stand wide apart, and far above tlie multitude, crowding the avenues of our daily life, we may speak to them in finely modulated tones, iu the most lefiued and choicest language; we may commend religion and temperance most eloquently, and lament with the utmost pathos irreligiou and intem- perance, but it is labor in vain; we no more touch their hearts or waken their spiritual sense, than the softest summer airs stir to ungovernable fury the depths of tbe ocean; we are not near enough to reach them; we walk too widely apart; there is a gulf between which 110 choice ol words or elecauce of manners can bridge. There is no fervor in the work, no teal belief in what is professed, and thus is accounted for, the failure to touch tbe hearts and awaken tbe consciences of those who stand and wait for tbe fulfilling of Christ's command. The temperance cause demands tbe earnest work of Christians. Tbe manufacture of in- toxicating drinks will not cease while tbe drinking customs of society demand a sup- ply. Legislation upon this matter, except as a partial method, depends upan tbe influ- ence of religious sentiment upon tbe public. Enforcement of present excise law is another, partial method most essential, but hedged about with difficulties. Uuited Christian effort for the conversion of souls, forreaching and reclaiming tbe druukard, for tlie revival of that spirit of true religion, which shall influence public senti- ment, recommends itself to all, and is a method of temperance work upon which all true Christians should speedily and actively unite. aitii. 1, R«.. those we would reclaim.

W e may stand wide apart, and far above

tlie mult i tude, crowding the avenues of our

modulated tones , iu t h e most lefiued and

choicest l anguage; we may c o m m e n d religion

and temperance most e loquently , and lament

with the utmost pathos irreligiou and intem

touch their hearts or waken their spiritual

sense , than the softest s u m m e r airs st ir to

ungovernable fury the depths of tbe ocean; we are no t near e n o u g h to reach t h e m ; w e

walk too widely apart; there is a g u l f between

which 110 choice o l words or e lecauce o f

the work, no teal belief in what is professed,

and thus is accounted for, the failure to

touch tbe hearts and awaken tbe consc iences

o f those w h o stand and wait for tbe fulfilling

of Christ's c o m m a n d .

T h e temperance cause demands tbe earnest

work of Christ ians. T b e manufacture o f in
