SPEARS® Patented SR Design Contains and Compensates for Radial Stress . . .

Radial stress generated by tightening of tapered pipe threads exerts tremendous expansion forceson female plastic thread fittings. When subjected to over-tightening — even accidentally — these

forces can literally split the fitting. Spears® patented SR Adapter design not only alleviates this

problem by containing expansion forces with its special collar, but additionally compensates for

expansion stress through thermoplastic material compression. Stresses are equalized at normal

joint make-up. The following graph illustrates this effect in a comparison of conventional plastic

female thread fittings with Spears® SR adapters when taken to failure.

Threaded Sprinkler Head Installation

WARNING: Use only thread sealant recommended by Spears®. Other joint compounds or pastes may contain substances that

could cause stress cracks in the CPVC. Cutting oils used in metal pipe threading cause stress cracking in CPVC materials. All

cutting oils must be removed and the metal pipe thoroughly ushed and degreased prior to assembly with CPVC systems.

1. APPLY SEALANT ONLY TO MALE THREAD

DO NOT use a combination of tape and paste sealants

RECOMMENDED SEALANT:

Spears® Manufacturing Company recommends the use of

Spears® BLUE 75™ thread sealant, which has been tested

for compatibility with Spears® products. Please follow the

sealant Manufacturer’s Application/Installation instructions.

Choice of another appropriate thread sealant is at the

discretion of the installer.

2. ASSEMBLE JOINT BY HAND

Thread Sprinkler Head “nger tight” for initial assembly.

3. WRENCH MAKE-UP

Use an adjustable wrench on the ats of the Head Adapter and

Wrench recommended by Sprinkler Manufacturer for Head.

Generally, wrench make-up of 1 to 2 turns beyond nger tight

is sufcient. Follow torque requirements.




1. Use TFE tape no less than 25 mil thick.

2. Initial wrap must fully cover the thread end.

3. Wrap tape in direction of threads

(clockwise for right-hand threads).

4. Always cover end of tting at the start

to prevent thread seizing prior to proper

joint makeup.

5. Use only 2-3 wraps of tape.

IF A TAPE SEALANT MUST BE USED:

WARNING: Do not use conventional pipewrenches that can damage tting .

No Sealant = No More Problem!

Using incompatible thread pastes and pipe dopes

is the major cause of environmental stress cracking

in plastics. Tape sealants are far too frequentlyimproperly or excessively applied. These problems

are fully eliminated!

NO-Stress Thread Design

The modified straight thread design is Engineered

to provide a tight joint at full engagement without

radial stress from tapered thread expansion. An

internal gasket retaining lip serves as a positive

stop against over tightening. No stress assures

years of long, trouble free service.

Gasket Sealing

An EPDM gasket has been Engineered for sealing

against the sprinkler head. The NPT male thread

starts on all sprinkler heads provide a uniform

surface for positive, reliable seal. Hundreds of tests

have been performed using virtually all brands of

heads and even rough, galvanized pipe nipples

without any damage or loss of sealing.

Using Tape or Paste Sealants With Plastic & Metal Threads

Wrap Tape In Direction of Threads(clockwise for right-hand thread):

• For Head Adapters, use ONLY 2-3

wraps of tape and tighten tospecified torque.

• For Female Adapter transition tometal pipe, use ONLY 5 to 5-1/2wraps of tape.

Joint Assembly:Tighten threaded joints 1-2 turnsbeyond finger tight. Avoid “backingup” the wrenched assembly.DO NOT over-tighten.

Use a TFE Tape

Sealant with aminimum thicknessof 2.5 mil.

Always cover end of fittingat the start to preventthread seizing prior toproper joint makeup.

Which Threaded Joint Sealant to Use?• Tape sealants are more susceptible to improper installation• Paste sealants are more likely to contain incompatible chemicals• Either type – Paste or Tape - must be properly used but NEVER use both!

Spears® Recommends a Compatible PastePaste-type thread sealants fill the threads better than tape. Application is less critical,as long as the sealant is compatible with the particular plastic used. Some “pipe

dopes” and pastes can cause chemical stress cracking. Spears® BLUE 75™ threadsealant has been specially formulated and tested for use with these plastic pipingcomponents.

The Problem with Using TFE Tape SealantsTFE tape sealants require special attention on application. Failure to follow the instructions below can

result in female thread breaks due to excessive tape use, difficult assembly due to insufficient tape,

leaks due to failure to cover starting threads, and leaks due to incorrectly applied tape that bunches at

the thread entrance. Since Teflon® tape is a really good lubricant, care must be taken not to

over-tighten taped joints.

If You MUST Use Tape Sealant, Use It Correctly!

Spears CPVC products are designed for use on residential systems to AS 2118.4, Domestic Sys-

tems AS2118.5 and Light Hazard systems to AS 2118.1 fire sprinkler systems. Impact resistantSpears CPVC products range in size from 3/4" to 2", UL Listed and FM Approved for services up

to 175 psi (1205 kPa) at 150°F (66°C). This complete system consists of straight and reducing

fittings, couplings, pipes, and solvent cement. The CPVC Spears One-Step Solvent Cement elimi-

nates the need for primers which simplifies installations by reducing curing times and easing instal-

lation. CPVC Spears pipe is SDR 13.5 as specified in ASTM-F442.

The Spears CPVC products meets NFPA 13, 13R and 13D standards for light hazard occupancies.

They are also UL Listed for underground piping services as described in NFPA 24. CPVC Spears

products are approved for NSF potable water services and comply with ANSI/NSF Standard 61 for

health effects.
