Year after year, the GI community demonstrates its remarkable dedication to

support colorectal cancer (CRC) prevention. In 2015, the College introduced a

prize to annually recognize the most innovative and impactful CRC awareness

efforts: SCOPY — Service Award for Colorectal Cancer Outreach, Prevention & Year-Round Excellence.

The 2017 SCOPY Award Winners deliver yet another class of extraordinary

initiatives, meeting the high bar established in past years. This year’s projects

leverage new technology to communicate messages to broader audiences.

Certain winners reveal an impressive level of detail in measuring the impact and

outcomes of their efforts. Many exhibit zeal and a fervent, ongoing commitment

to community service, public health, and the national screening goal of 80% of

eligible adults by 2018.

A three-judge panel (recognized on the next page), designated by the ACG

Public Relations Committee, winnowed down all of the impressive efforts

to this truly outstanding group of winners. This booklet also recognizes and

congratulates the many submissions deserving an Honorable Mention. The

passion and dedication of ACG members to communicate the critical message

of CRC screening and prevention is evident in every submission.

Learn more and be inspired by this year’s projects by visiting the ACG Blog

(acgblog.org).

We want to express our deep gratitude to everyone who dedicated their time

and energy to execute these CRC awareness programs.

Very Truly Yours,

Jordan J. Karlitz, MD, FACG Carol A. Burke, MD, FACG

Second Annual Charity Screening Event for At-Risk PatientsAustin Gastroenterology partnered for a second year with the People’s Community Clinic to provide colorectal cancer education and free colonoscopies to underserved, high-risk patients. Twenty-six free colonoscopies were conducted during the April 1, 2017, event, which featured above-practice-average adenoma detection rates. Doctors, anesthesia providers, nurses, technicians and office personnel volunteered their time and demonstrated great spirit.

600 People Raise $50,000 for Colorectal Cancer AwarenessNearly 600 people attended the 2017 March to Get Screened 5K, raising more than $50,000 for colorectal cancer screening awareness. The race, which is now run in two locations and features an easy-to-navigate website, MarchToGetScreened.com, has come a long way since roughly 60 people attended the first race eight years ago. Proceeds go to the BGC Foundation for Research and Education and ultimately help offer screening colonoscopies to those who may not have the means to pay for the procedure.

Best Use of Patient Profiles to Increase Colorectal Cancer Awareness

“Don’t Wait for a Reason. The Reasons Are Already There.”Stage IV colon cancer patient Paul Hahn’s early detection message resonates in a deep, emotional way in a series of three colorectal cancer awareness commercials. Hahn, who sadly passed away in November 2016, describes how he wishes he had acted sooner:

“Obviously I’m not going to be able to save myself…but if I can save another person, I’m going to try to do it,” he said.

Best Concept for Community Advertising by a Private Practice

Gastro Health, LLCMiami, FL

“Be There for Your Family During Those Special Moments”This series directs readers to visit FastTrackColonoscopy.com to determine eligibility for a colonoscopy without an initial office visit. Each ad shows two people — one as a ghost-like figure — sharing a moment. One of the images (at left) shows a bride and her father, who is the ghost-like figure, having seemingly missed the wedding. This sends the reader the message: “Don’t Let Colon Cancer Take You From The Ones You Love,” as the tagline reads.

Best Colorectal Cancer Awareness Outcomes Assessment

Jinendra Satiya, MD, and the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine Palm Beach Regional GME Consortium Internal Medicine Residency ProgramAtlantis, FL

An Office-Based Endeavor to Increase Screening RatesThis project considered whether colorectal cancer education for patients and residents would increase screening adherence rates. Up front, the group identified a set of patients and whether they had been screened. The office instituted a process to document whether a patient had been screened, informed residents by sharing a lecture on screening in the outpatient setting, and sent mailers emphasizing the importance of screening to the 600 patients who had no screening documented in their charts. Following the outreach, the office reviewed and determined that, of the 600 patients, 155 had screening documented (26%); 416 (69%) did not have any office visits during this time period; and 23 (4%) did not have screening documented or addressed. The project distinguished itself by its epidemiological approach and by measuring outcomes.

SCOPY Inspiration & Impact Award

Matthew Paul MewhorterCancerOwl.comCulpeper, VA

CRC Survivor Tells Stories through CancerOwl Comic This stage-two colon cancer survivor inspires people across the cancer community with his comic, “Cancer Owl,” in which Mewhorter portrays himself as an owl and tells his and others’ cancer stories. The University of Virginia (UVA) Department of Gastroenterology credits Mewhorter, who was treated in the UVA system, for initially inspiring its Digestive Health Service Line and its 2017 CRC awareness efforts, which garnered a 2017 SCOPY Award.

“He was able to reach out to every member of staff highlighting the importance of our role, from the schedulers who made his appointments to the kind faces of peri-procedural nurses,” the UVA Department of Gastroenterology said of meeting with Mewhorter.

Best Coordinated Community Health Intervention

University of Virginia, Department of GastroenterologyCharlottesville, VA

Reaching Every Corner of Virginia with Coordinated Public Health Effort

The University of Virginia (UVA) Department of Gastroenterology succeeded in its goal of making a great public health impact by targeting both the University and the entire UVA Hospital patient community. Physicians, nurses and endoscopy technicians answered questions about screening at a University event estimated to have reached 23,000 people. The initiative also leveraged UVA’s role as a state institution to target the large patient community of the UVA Primary Care Department, working with existing programs HoosWell and BeWell. Through HoosWell, trained nursing staff now record all patients who have not been screened and schedule clinic evaluation. Working with BeWell, more than 10,000 postcards were sent to households with one or more patients over the age of 40 to encourage scheduling screening.
