As chair of the USGBC Hawaii Green Schools Committee, I led a group of passionate collegues and volunteers to host the 3rd Green Schools Symposium at the DOE's First LEED Registered School. Over 230 were in attendance and hosted speakers from Hawaii and the US.

Coordinator, KeynoteAnisa is currently the Manager for theCenter for Green Schools FellowshipProgram, an initiative to place SustainabilityOfficers in school districts around thecountry, modeled after her work in NewOrleans. Edward OshiroPrincipal Ewa Makai Middle SchoolEdward Oshiro is the Principal of EwaMakai Middle School. He began is careerat Radford High School where he alsocoached then became a Vice-Principal atWaipahu High. His experience led him toprincipalships at Makaha, WaipahuIntermediate, Waikele , Aiea where hecontinued his passion for teaching andsustainability. Edward is the proud father offive children, some grandchildren, afantastic wife, and 3 great dogs. HNEIGHBOR ISLAND CASE STUDIESSESSION #19:45 - 11:00AM

Baldwin High School Library, LEED SilverThe new library replaces the existing 45 years old school library with a larger,state-of-the-art facility to support the educational needs of students. The designneeded to meet the approval of the State Historic Preservation Division, inaddition to being designed and constructed to meet LEED “silver” certification byGBCI based on LEED for Schools 2007. The project was designed to maximizeenergy performance, use of natural daylighting, reduce water usage, reduce sitedisturbance, use of materials with high recycled content and low VOC (volatileorganic compound), provide good indoor air quality and thermal comfort.

Kendall Ellingwood, AIA, LEED AP | Design PartnersKendall Ellingwood, AIA, is a Principal Architect at Design Partners Incorporatedand is responsible for design and management of the firm’s government sectorprojects. His professional experience includes institutional projects of many types,including educational facilities. Mr. Ellingwood has effectively worked withgovernment agencies such as the: NAVFAC, Army Corp of Engineers, City andCounty of Honolulu, University of Hawaii, DAGS and DOE. In addition, he is aLEED Accredited Professional and has integrated sustainable design features intoall of his recent projects.

West Hawaii Explorations Academy The West Hawaii Explorations Academy is a small project-based charter high schoollocated in the Hawaii Ocean Science and Technology (HOST) Park at Keahole Pointin Kona. The sustainable master plan and subsequent charrette has resulted in thesolidification of a culturally and environmentally sustainable vision for the designof the new campus. This session focuses on the integrated design process from themultiple perspectives of Owner’s representative, sustainability consultant, andproject architect with time allotted for open panel discussion at the end.

Ira Freeman, AIA, LEED AP | Ferraro Choi and Associates LTD.Ira Freeman, AIA is an architect with Ferraro Choi and Associates LTD. Ira has aDoctorate of Architecture from the University of Hawaii and a Bachelors of Arts inEnvironmental Design from Texas A&M University. His focus is educational,institutional, and healthcare facilities with an emphasis on sustainable design.Ira’s sustainable design experience includes Hawaii Gateway Energy Center (LEEDPlatinum Certified), Waipahu Intermediate School Cafeteria (LEED Certified), andFerraro Choi Office (LEED Platinum Certified).

Ken Melrose, Project Manager | Pa’ahana Enterprises A graduate of the University of Hawaii at Manoa Architecture Department inUrban Planning, Ken has been a licensed General Contractor and Real EstateAgent, and now owns the project management consulting business, Pa`ahanaEnterprises. Ken focuses his project management talents on helping educationaland non-profit institutions bring their facility needs to reality. Currently, he isrepresenting Kanu o ka ‘Aina Learning Ohana Charter School, and West HawaiiExplorations Academy. Two of his recent projects have attained LEED Platinumcertification, and the HPA Energy Lab was the third building in the world to becertified under the Living Building Challenge.

Katrina Morgan, AIA LEED AP | O’Brien/Fermata Katrina Morgan is an architect and sustainable design consultant withO’Brien/Fermata, based in Seattle, Washington. Her vision is to inspire her clientsto strive for the most ecologically appropriate and economically feasible methodsto design, construct, and operate our built environment. She is a skilled facilitatorand change agent able to build consensus among multiple stakeholders. Her workhas included a broad spectrum of project types and scales, including green schools,

civic buildings, and commercial development. She currently keeps office hours inboth Seattle and Hawaii.

Steve Wong, AIA | Mitsunga and Associates Mr. Steve Wong’s professional experience covers a broad spectrum of architecturalprojects for government agencies, as well as for the private sector. As Vice-President and Principal-in-Charge of the firm's Architectural Division, he has beenthe lead designer and manager for most of the firm's major projects. Mr. Wong iswell qualified as one of the project architects to design these projects in the areasof education, healthcare, multi-family residential, single-family residential,commercial and laboratory design.

Brenda Lowrey, AIA | DOE Facilites Brenda is a Facility Planner with the DOE, utilizing her background in architectureand land planning along with four years of classroom teaching experience. Herarchitectural experience included work in Honolulu, Washington D.C., New YorkCity, Philadelphia, San Diego, and Boston. Brenda is a 1983 graduate of ArizonaState University with a B. Arch degree, and has her Post-Bacc. Teacher Certificationin Secondary Mathematics from the University of Phoenix. She is a LEED AP andmember of the USGBC Hawaii Chapter, AIA Honolulu, the Council of EducationalFacility Planners International, and Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Honolulu.

Constructing Omidyar K-1 Campus –a Contractor’s perspectiveIn Pursuit of Platinum: The Contractor’s StoryThe stakeholders have met, the eco-charrettes are finished, the contract drawingsand specifications are completed and the LEED Certification goal has beendetermined. With a fully executed contract the general contractor has mobilized tothe jobsite. What next? What methods and strategies must the contractor employto successfully achieve the contractor-managed LEED points? How will thecontractor resolve challenges that threaten these points? If you’re an Owner thissession will give you a greater understanding of the effort required—from thefield—to earn the points and resolve the challenges. If you’re a member of theDesign Team, this session will provide you with insight into all parties developinggreater synergies with the construction team to earn the points and achieve theCertification objectives. If you’re a Contractor then this session will help youprepare, implement and execute for eventual success. The Platinum CertifiedPunahou Omidyar K1 Campus will serve as the basis for this presentation. This iswhere the rubber-meets-the-road.

Charlie Issacs | Hawaiian Dredging Construction CompanyCharlie Issacs is a Project Engineer at Hawaiian Dredging Construction Company.He is a graduate of Kamehameha Schools, 1966 and holds a BA in Anthropologyfrom Hawaii Pacific University. He is a LEED Accredited Professional BD+C,Certified Green Professional, and licensed General Contractor since 1977. He isalso Co-President of Ahahui Malama I ka Lokahi, an organization committed todeveloping, promoting and practicing the Native Hawaiian Conservation Ethic,mauka to makai.

Making the commitment to green existing schools across a district requires acomprehensive plan that integrates two processes: one focused on how eachschool facility will improve building performance, and another on adoptingsustainable operations and maintenance policies and best practices. In thissession, Anisa Baldwin Metzger from the Center for Green Schools at USGBC willfocus on strategic planning for district-wide sustainability initiatives. Thediscussion will address specific steps and strategies that can be put in place bydistrict staff to green existing school facilities.

Michael Chang | Hawaii Energy Michael serves as Deputy Program Manager at Hawaii Energy, the state energyconservation and efficiency program. He has a broad range of energy experiencegained from 18 years in the energy industry, helping local businesses to identifyways to cut energy costs, obtain viable financing, implement energy-savingactions, achieve energy efficiency goals and, most importantly, how to maintainthe persistence of the savings. He currently serves as President of ASHRAEHawaii, a professional association of engineers involved in heating, refrigeration,and air conditioning.

Mark Duda | Hawaii Solar Energy AssociationMark is President of Hawaii Solar Energy Association where he develops theorganization’s legislative agenda and leads its regulatory activities. He alsoserves on the Hawaii Economic Development Task Force, Co-Chairs the RenewableEnergy working group of the Hawaii Energy Policy Forum and is a member forthe Hawaii DLIR’s Steering Committee for Renewable Energy WorkforceDevelopment. Mark is also co-founder of RevoluSun, and Distributed EnergyPartners, a Hawaii-based, owned and operated renewable energy firm focusedon the commercial, non-profit and government markets.

Wendy Lagareta | Waialae Elementary Charter SchoolBorn and raised on O’ahu, Wendy Lagareta is an educational professional with30 years of experience in both early childhood and elementary education in bothpublic and private settings. She has been with Waialae PCS for the past 7 years.Ms. Lagareta has a passion for environmental education with emphasis on theoutdoors as a learning lab for students.

Susie Osborne | Kua O Ka La- New Century PublicCharter School (NCPCS) in PunaSusie Osborne is the Co-founder, Director and Resource Developer for Ho‘ouluLÇhui. The nonprofit Ho`oulu Lahui has operated since 1995 and the success ofthese programs led to the formation and Chartering of Kua O Ka La PublicCharter School. Susie has been engaged in the entire process in the formationand funding of Kua O Ka La PCS and is the Principal Administrator for the school.

Miki Tomita | University Laboratory SchoolMiki has taught at University Laboratory School for a decade. Currently, herteaching focuses on topics related to ecology and environmental connections,grounded in both scientific habits of mind and critiques of the nature of westernscience. After completing her Ph.D. with Stanford University’s School ofEducation, Miki returned to full-time work at ULS determined to “be the changeshe wished to see” – and founded Project Pono, an environmental stewardshipand service-learning program. Her students engage in concepts like island values,environmental justice, food sovereignty, sustainability, and peace; they learn tobe participants and advocates for themselves and their communities. To carryforth her students’ efforts, Miki serves as part of DBEDT’s Hawaii Clean EnergyInitiative Education Group, helps develop curriculum grounded in place- andculture-based wisdom, serves on the Hawaii School Peace Gardens committee,and consults on the Middle Schoolers Out to Save the World project to promotescience engagement through energy conservation. Miki is also in the midst ofdeveloping classroom-based units on aquaponics and edible landscaping, andserves as president of the Hawai‘i state chapter of Phi Delta Kappa, an honorsociety dedicated to supporting research, service, and leadership in education.

Betty Gearan | Green House Betty Gearen is a former art teacher at Punahou School who in 2005 turned herhome into a sustainable learning center, The Green House, where hands-onworkshops are provided for the community. The Green House now does outreachprograms where their teachers implement the Green Ribbons Schools Programthat helps schools with their greening efforts, and an after-school LearningEnvironmental Awareness Program (LEAP), which reaches students in middle andhigh schools across Oahu. This year The Green House has also partnered with theInstitute for Human Services (IHS), training homeless in their organic gardeningjobs training program.

Uila Vendiola | Kahuku High School and IntermediateUila graduated from Kahuku High School, attended Chaminade University on avolleyball scholarship, then Oklahoma City University School of Law. Uila decidedto become a teacher instead of a lawyer and is now in her seventh year teachingat Kahuku High & Intermediate School where she teaches AP US Government &Politics and AVID. She has coordinated the school's recycling program for sevenyears and has overseen student volunteers at the Kokua Festival. Last year Uilalaunched a month-long, campus-wide 3R's Campaign at KHIS that included aWaste & Food Audit, a Marine Debris Clean-Up, and a Trash to Treasure activity.

GREEN RESOURCES AND FUNDING OPPORTUNITIESSESSION #211:15 - 12:30PM

Ivory McClintock | Blue Planet Foundation Ivory has been an active youth leader for the past three years since she movedfrom the Garden Isle of Kauai to Oahu. She graduated last year from UH Manoawith her Bachelors in Political Science and was the Events Coordinator and HUBTeam Leader of Sustainable UH, an active on-campus, student-led group. A strongadvocate for green workforce development and sustainability in Hawai'i, she nowserves on the Board of the Sustainability Association of Hawai'i. As ProgramSpecialist at Blue Planet Foundation she has initiated community outreachprograms across the state and is currently working on energy efficiencycompetitions on Kauai.

Carol Feinga | Kokua Hawaii Foundation Carol has been the Administrative Director at the Kokua Hawaii Foundation forfive years. In this role, Carol oversees the 3R's School Recycling Program, whichfocuses on waste reduction on school campuses throughout Oahu, a leaderempowering students, teachers and administrators toward sustainability. Sheserves on the Laie Community Association Board of Directors, Brigham YoungUniversity's SIFE Advisory Board, the Environmental Advisory Committee for thePolynesian Cultural Center, and now serves on the Board for the SustainableAssociation of Hawaii. Prior to Kokua Hawaii Foundation, Carol was the Directorof Hawaii & Military Sales at the Polynesian Cultural Center and has many yearsof Sales and Marketing experience in Hawaii's hospitality and tourism industry.Carol received her Bachelors of Arts degree in Art Education at the BrighamYoung University Hawaii Campus.

Lisa E. Benatar, PhD | Chevron Curriculum Lisa has a longstanding interest in energy resources, which led her to studyGeophysics as an undergraduate student (B.A., UC Berkeley) and MaterialsScience & Engineering as a graduate student (M.S. and PhD, Stanford University).Her graduate research on solar cell materials was followed by four years workingin the atomic-resolution microscope industry. To direct her work back towards hertrue interest, Lisa developed energy-related science curricula and kits for gradesK through 12 and started a company, Energy Science Education (ESE). She nowworks with Chevron Energy Solutions, delivering the educational component thataccompanies their energy-efficiency and renewable-energy installations.

Mindy Jaffe | Waikiki Worm CompanyMindy dusted off a 1973 B.A. in Environmental Education to start Waiklki WormCo. in 2004. She worked briefly after graduation on the staff of Sharon AudubonCenter in Connecticut, Blandford Nature Center in Grand Rapids, Michigan, andDenver Museum of Natural History. Distracted by the fun and challenge of smallbusiness, she spent the last 30 years operating several successful enterprises,including an award-winning Jazzercise franchise and a sports marketing andpublishing company. In 2000, Mindy was elected to the State House ofRepresentatives from the Kaimuki-Waikiki district and served one term.

Charlie Palumbo | AquaPonoCharlie studied pond management formally at UH Manoa starting in 1979. Afterworking several years at an East Haven, CT pet store in charge of maintainingthe aquarium section, he went on to major in Architecture and graduated in 1987at UH Manoa. He has since been practicing as a conceptual designer, renderer,and full-service architect for almost 25 years and is licensed to practicearchitecture in the state of Hawaii for over 15 years. The aquaponic and homeraised food movement is tied to sustainable architecture and integration of bothis a natural progression. With Charlie’s combined skills and interest in design andgrowing food organically, sustainably and locally, the decision to formAquapono.com was a natural evolution of his life experiences.

Lauren Roth – Roth EcologicalLauren C. Roth Venu has been a leader in integrated systems planning andecological design for over 11 years. She is the Founder and President of RothEcological Design Int. LLC (REDI), a Pacific-based partner to several leadingU.S. ecological engineering firms that provide commercial water audits andconsulting, project management, design/build and operational services fornatural systems technologies for low impact development and onsitewastewater treatment and reuse.

WORKSHOP | SCHOOL GARDENS AS21ST CENTURY OUTDOOR CLASSROOMS

Arden Bucklin-SporerArden Bucklin-Sporer is the executive director of the San Francisco GreenSchoolyard Alliance, an advocacy organization for school gardens and outdoorclassrooms. She is the director of educational gardens for the San FranciscoUnified School District, and a founding partner of Bay Tree Design, a landscapearchitecture firm.

Rachel Kathleen PringleRachel Kathleen Pringle is programs manager for the San Francisco GreenSchoolyard Alliance, as well as the urban school garden liaison for Occidental Artsand Ecology Center's school garden teacher training program in Sonoma County.She was previously a garden educator and coordinator of a public school gardenin San Francisco.

He

previously worked for the California Conservation Corps on vocationalenvironmental education and the Division of the State Architect where heran the Sustainable Schools program. He is a graduate of Humboldt StateUniversity with a Bachelors of Science degree in Restorative Developmentand a Masters of Science in Community Development from UC Davis.
