Experiencing the Third Heaven

“After these things I looked up, and behold, a door standing open in heaven, and the first voice which I had heard, like the sound of a trumpet speaking with me, said, “Come uphere”, and I will show you what must take place after these things.” Revelation 4:1, 2

A. WHAT IS THE SPIRITUAL REALM?The “Unseen”, eternal realm.

2 Cor 4:18 Since we consider and look not to the things that are seen but to thethings that are unseen; for the things that are visible are temporal (brief and fleeting),but the things that are invisible are deathless and everlasting.

A scriptural example of “seeing” into the spiritual realm.2 Kings 6:13-1713He said, Go and see where he is, that I may send and seize him. And it was toldhim, He is in Dothan.14So [the Syrian king] sent there horses, chariots, and a great army. They came bynight and surrounded the city.15When the servant of the man of God rose early and went out, behold, an army withhorses and chariots was around the city. Elisha's servant said to him, Alas, mymaster! What shall we do?16[Elisha] answered, Fear not; for those with us are more than those with them.17Then Elisha prayed, Lord, I pray You, open his eyes that he may see. And the Lordopened the young man's eyes, and he saw, and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha.

Things that are seen were brought forth first through the Word of God whichwas spoken in the unseen or spiritual realm.3

By faith we understand that the worlds [during the successive ages] were framed(fashioned, put in order, and equipped for their intended purpose) by the word of God,so that what we see was not made out of things which are visible. Hebrews 11:3

B. TWO KINGDOMS IN THE SPIRITUAL REALMMatthew 12:22-2822Then a blind and dumb man under the power of a demon was brought to Jesus, andHe cured him, so that the blind and dumb man both spoke and saw.23And all the [crowds of] people were stunned with bewildered wonder and said, Thiscannot be the Son of David, can it?24But the Pharisees, hearing it, said, This Man drives out demons only by and with thehelp of Beelzebub, the prince of demons.25And knowing their thoughts, He said to them, Any kingdom that is divided against

itself is being brought to desolation and laid waste, and no city or house dividedagainst itself will last or continue to stand.26And if Satan drives out Satan, he has become divided against himself anddisunified; how then will his kingdom last or continue to stand?27And if I drive out the demons by [help of] Beelzebub, by whose [help] do your sonsdrive them out? For this reason they shall be your judges.28But if it is by the Spirit of God that I drive out the demons, then the kingdom of Godhas come upon you [before you expected it].

Col 1:12, 1312Giving thanks to the Father, Who has qualified and made us fit to share the portionwhich is the inheritance of the saints (God's holy people) in the Light.13[The Father] has delivered and drawn us to Himself out of the control and the

dominion of darkness and has transferred us into the kingdom of the Son.

Hebrews 12:28Let us therefore, receiving a kingdom that is firm and stable and cannot be shaken,offer to God pleasing service and acceptable worship, with modesty and pious careand godly fear and awe;

NO TIME – NO DISTANCE IN THE SPIRIT REALMExamples: the visions of Ezekiel, the transport of Phillip, theexperiences in the glory realm by John in the book of Revelation; Paul’s experience in the third heaven.

C. WHAT IS HEAVEN?The subject of heaven is a significant topic in the scriptures with over 750 referencesfound in the Bible. Over 250 of these references are in relation to the “abode of God”.

D. WHAT IS THE THIRD HEAVEN?The third heaven is a scriptural term found once in scripture. It is used to describethe abode of God. The Throne room is in this realm.

2 Cor 12:1 I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago--whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows--was caught up to the third heaven.

Gen 2:1 THUS THE heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.

Deu 10:14 Behold, the heavens and the heaven of heavens belong to the Lord your God, the earth also, with all that is in it and on it.

FIRST AND SECOND HEAVEN?a. first – earth’s atmosphere – starts, moon, sun etc… Psalm 8:3b. second - ?? realm of the angelic and demonic – Daniel 10; fallen angelsrealm; Ex 8:3

Paradise: 3857 paradeisoj paradeisos par-ad’-i-sos (Strongs – Greek)- the part of Hades- the upper regions of the heavens…- heaven…

Luke 23:43 And He answered him, Truly I tell you, today you shall be withMe in Paradise. <3857>

2 Cor 12:4 Was caught up into paradise <3857>, and he heard utterancesbeyond the power of man to put into words, which man is not permitted toutter.

Rev 2:7 He who is able to hear, let him listen to and give heed to what theSpirit says to the assemblies (churches). To him who overcomes (isvictorious), I will grant to eat [of the fruit] of the tree of life, which is in theparadise <3857> of God.

IS PARADISE/THIRD HEAVEN, THE THRONE ROOM LEVEL OF HEAVEN? Quite possibly. Paul called Paradise the “third heaven”. There are no other specific higher levels of heaven mentioned in the

scriptures Jesus is the “tree of life” which is in the midst of “paradise”. Jesus is seated at the right hand of the Father on His throne

IS IT POSSIBLE THAT PARADISE IS ONLY ONE LEVEL OF THE HEAVENS ANDTHERE ARE STILL LEVELS BEYOND?

Scriptures do not give reference to this.

It is wise to use Bible terminology when describing spiritual

experience to confirm experiences in God with the validation of HisWord. To use terminology of “higher heavens”(i.e. 7th heaven) wouldbe extra-biblical.

E. ASCENDING AND DESCENDING INTO THE HEAVENS- Angels – Gen 28:12 And he dreamed that there was a ladder set up onthe earth, and the top of it reached to heaven; and the angels of Godwere ascending and descending on it!

John 1:51 Then He said to him, I assure you, most solemnly I tell youall, you shall see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending anddescending upon the Son of Man!

Jesus engaged in two types of ascending:1. “Ascending in devotional prayer and worship”2. Historical ascension of Christ.

F. WHAT IS THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN?

A Kingdom is a place where a KING has rule. The Kingdom of God is His domain of rule.There are 32 New Testament references to the Kingdom of Heaven.Matthew 3:2 ; 4:17

G. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE “A NEW CREATION IN CHRIST”?

2 Cor 5:17 Therefore if any person is [ingrafted] in Christ (the Messiah) he is a newcreation (a new creature altogether); the old [previous moral and spiritual condition]has passed away. Behold, the fresh and new has come!

1 Thess 5:23 And may the God of peace Himself sanctify you through and through[separate you from profane things, make you pure and wholly consecrated to God];and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved sound and complete [and found]blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ (the Messiah).

Body – relates to the physicalSoul – relates to the emotions, reasoning’s, will, relational realmSpirit – relates to the spirit realmJohn 3:6 What is born of [from] the flesh is flesh [of the physical is physical]; andwhat is born of the Spirit is spirit.

Our born-again spirits are sensitive to the Spirit of God and contain the nature of God/life of Christ.

The scripture says that we are “in Christ” if we are a believer.

Eph 2:6 And He raised us up together with Him and made us sit down together [giving us joint seating with Him] in the heavenly sphere [by virtue of our being] inChrist Jesus (the Messiah, the Anointed One).

Eph 2:10 10For we are God's [own] handiwork (His workmanship), recreated in ChristJesus, [born anew] that we may do those good works which God predestined(planned beforehand) for us [taking paths which He prepared ahead of time], that weshould walk in them [living the good life which He prearranged and made ready for usto live].

Eph 2:13 13But now in Christ Jesus, you who once were [so] far away, through (by,in) the blood of Christ have been brought near.

H. ARE BELIEVERS ABLE TO EXPERIENCE THE SPIRIT REALM?Yes. Our spirits were created in us to make us sensitive to that realm. There aremany examples throughout scripture of God’s people having spiritual experiences.Even though, each individual will have different experienced depending on theleading of the Holy Spirit, all believers are invited to enjoy the reality of the Lord andHis Kingdom.

I. ARE BELIEVERS ABLE TO ACCESS THE THIRD HEAVEN REALM?1. On the basis of being “in Christ” (If Christ is seated on the throne in the highestheaven, and if we are in Christ, then we also in our spirits would be able to accessthe throne room position by faith.)

Ephesians 1:17-23[For I always pray to] the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, that Hemay grant you a spirit of wisdom and revelation [of insight into mysteries and secrets]in the [deep and intimate] knowledge of Him,18By having the eyes of your heart flooded with light, so that you can know andunderstand the hope to which He has called you, and how rich is His gloriousinheritance in the saints (His set-apart ones),19And [so that you can know and understand] what is the immeasurable and unlimitedand surpassing greatness of His power in and for us who believe, as demonstrated inthe working of His mighty strength,20Which He exerted in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His [own] right hand in the heavenly [places],21Far above all rule and authority and power and dominion and every name that isnamed [above every title that can be conferred], not only in this age and in this world,but also in the age and the world which are to come.22And He has put all things under His feet and has appointed Him the universal andsupreme Head of the church [a headship exercised throughout the church],(1) 23Which is His body, the fullness of Him Who fills all in all [for in that body lives the fullmeasure of Him Who makes everything complete, and Who fills everythingeverywhere with Himself].

Ephesians 2:5-65Even when we were dead (slain) by [our own] shortcomings and trespasses, Hemade us alive together in fellowship and in union with Christ; [He gave us the very lifeof Christ Himself, the same new life with which He quickened Him, for] it is by grace(His favour and mercy which you did not deserve) that you are saved (delivered from judgment and made partakers of Christ's salvation).6And He raised us up together with Him and made us sit down together [giving us joint seating with Him] in the heavenly sphere [by virtue of our being] in Christ Jesus(the Messiah, the Anointed One).

According to the preceding scripture, we are already positioned in the throne room(We believe that another term for the Throne Room is Third Heaven). It is simply a

matter of becoming “aware” of this through the opening of our understanding byrevelation of the Word.

Revelation 4:1, 2AFTER THIS I looked, and behold, a door standing open in heaven! And the firstvoice which I had heard addressing me like [the calling of] a war trumpet said, Comeup here, and I will show you what must take place in the future.2At once I came under the [Holy] Spirit's power, and behold, a throne stood in heaven,with One seated on the throne!

2. We are citizens of HeavenHeb 12:22-24 But rather, you have come to Mount Zion, even to the city of the livingGod, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to countless multitudes of angels in festal

gathering,23And to the church (assembly) of the Firstborn who are registered [as citizens] inheaven, and to the God Who is Judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous (theredeemed in heaven) who have been made perfect,24And to Jesus, the Mediator (Go-between, Agent) of a new covenant, and to thesprinkled blood which speaks [of mercy], a better and nobler and more graciousmessage than the blood of Abel [which cried out for vengeance]

Eph 2:19 Therefore you are no longer outsiders (exiles, migrants, and aliens,excluded from the rights of citizens), but you now share citizenship with the saints(God's own people, consecrated and set apart for Himself); and you belong to God's[own] household.

Heb 11:16 But the truth is that they were yearning for and aspiring to a better andmore desirable country, that is, a heavenly [one]. For that reason God is not ashamedto be called their God [even to be surnamed their God--the God of Abraham, Isaac,and Jacob], for He has prepared a city for them.

John 14:2, 3, 4 2In My Father's house there are many dwelling places (homes). If itwere not so, I would have told you; for I am going away to prepare a place for you.3

And when (if) I go and make ready a place for you, I will come back again and willtake you to Myself, that where I am you may be also.4And [to the place] where I am going, you know the way.

J. ARE BELEIVER’S ALLOWED TO OR ENCOURAGED TO ACCESS THE THIRDHEAVEN?

(Webster’s Dictionary) ACCESS1. the act of coming toward or near to; approach2. a way or means of approaching, getting, using, etc.3. the right to enter, approach, or use, admittance4. increase or growth

Col 3:1-3 IF THEN you have been raised with Christ [to a new life, thus sharing Hisresurrection from the dead], aim at and seek the [rich, eternal treasures] that areabove, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God .2And set your minds and keep them set on what is above (the higher things), not onthe things that are on the earth.3For [as far as this world is concerned] you have died, and your [new, real] life ishidden with Christ in God.

Revelation 4:1, 2 1AFTER THIS I looked, and behold, a door standing open inheaven! And the first voice which I had heard addressing me like [the calling of] a [1]

war trumpet said, Come up here, and I will show you what must take place in thefuture.2At once I came under the [Holy] Spirit's power, and behold, a throne stood in heaven,

with One seated on the throne!

Heb 4:16 Let us then fearlessly and confidently and boldly draw near to the throne of grace (the throne of God's unmerited favour to us sinners), that we may receivemercy [for our failures] and find grace to help in good time for every need [appropriatehelp and well-timed help, coming just when we need it].

Heb 9:24 24For Christ (the Messiah) has not entered into a sanctuary made with[human] hands, only a copy and pattern and type of the true one, but [He hasentered] into heaven itself, now to appear in the [very] presence of God on our behalf.

Heb 10:19-22 19Therefore, brethren, since we have full freedom and confidence to

enter into the [Holy of] Holies [by the power and virtue] in the blood of Jesus,20By this fresh (new) and living way which He initiated and dedicated and opened for us through the separating curtain (veil of the Holy of Holies), that is, through His flesh,

21And since we have [such] a great and wonderful and noble Priest [Who rules] over the house of God,22Let us all come forward and draw near with true (honest and sincere) hearts inunqualified assurance and absolute conviction engendered by faith (by that leaning of the entire human personality on God in absolute trust and confidence in His power,wisdom, and goodness), having our hearts sprinkled and purified from a guilty (evil)conscience and our bodies cleansed with pure water.

K. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A SOFEREIGN ACT OF GOD AND A FAITHACT OF BELIEVERS?

1. SOVEREIGN ACTS: God initiates.

Why? Usually as a forerunner or as a sign and wonder to encourage believers towalk in faith.

2. FAITH ACTS: The believer accesses the promise of covenant by their faith.

Romans 1:17 “… the righteous shall live by faith”… NOT “… the righteous livesby sovereign acts.”

A. HOW DO WE EXPERIENCE THE SPIRITUAL REALM?

1. All experience in the Kingdom must be based on the authority of God’s Wordand His covenant promises.

John 3:35 The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into His hand.

We are joint heirs with Christ, therefore all things have been given unto us.

2. We are IN CHRIST and:

a. Are given EVERY SPIRITUAL BLESSING in the HEAVENLY PLACES

Eph 1:3b. Are given everything needed to live a godly and fulfilling life. 2 Peter 1:2-4

3. BELIEVERS EXPERIENCE THE SPIRITUAL REALM BY FAITH.All things in the Kingdom are able to be brought into our experience throughfaith in the Word and promises of God (i.e. salvation, healing, freedom) asthe Spirit leads. Hebrews 11:6; Mark 11:24

John 20:25-29

So the other disciples kept telling him, We have seen the Lord! But he said tothem, Unless I see in His hands the marks made by the nails and put myfinger into the nail prints, and put my hand into His side, I will never believe[it].26Eight days later His disciples were again in the house, and Thomas waswith them. Jesus came, though they were behind closed doors, and stoodamong them and said, Peace to you!27Then He said to Thomas, Reach out your finger here, and see My hands;and put out your hand and place [it] in My side. Do not be faithless andincredulous, but [stop your unbelief and] believe!28Thomas answered Him, My Lord and my God!29Jesus said to him, Because you have seen Me, Thomas, do you now believe (trust, have faith)? Blessed and happy and to be envied are those

who have never seen Me and yet have believed and adhered to and trusted and relied on Me.

4. OUR SPIRITS WERE CREATED TO HELP US RELATE TO THE KINGDOMREALM.

The born again spirit man is already very acquainted with the Kingdom realm.The spirit man is already completely united with the Lord, His covenantpromises, and His purposes. It is important then that we learn to follow theleading of our born again spiritual nature and allow our souls and bodies tobecome sensitive to all that is within the Christ-life within.

Much of the western church is “afraid” of spiritual life and experience. We arequite happy to eat healthy, exercise and study to develop our intellect, but we

tend to neglect our spirit man. On a general corporate level within the churchwe tend to experience very little in the area of Kingdom Spiritual life. Wereafraid of it, and we shouldn’t be. The very same Spirit that raised Christ livesin us.

5. UNDER THE COMPLETE CONTROL OF THE HOLY SPIRIT(invite His leading – submit to Him and to truth)

John 14. The Holy Spirit is our helper – our “paracletos” and comes along side us tolead us and guide us into all truth.

When we engage in Kingdom life and experience, we must be in completesubmission to the Holy Spirit, allowing Him to lead, teach, and convict us. In no wayare we to pave our own way into the heavenlies. Jesus is the Way and the Holy Spiritis our guide. Our own soulish tendencies to rule in Kingdom experiences must be laiddown.

6. SANCTIFIED IMAGINATION – the eyes of your heart (understanding)

• The mind as a faculty of understanding, feeling, desiring

• Understanding

• Mind , i.e. spirit, way of thinking and feeling

• Thoughts, either good or bad

Much of our spiritual revelation is fed into our imagination or mind. We are oftentimes afraid of using our mind or imagination to receive revelation from the Lord. The

eyes of our heart (imagination) is however, frequently used by the Lord to enablebelievers to envision Kingdom truth.

The activation of the sanctified imagination during times of worship, Bible study andprayer is very common historically in the biblical meditation and contemplationpractices of western Christianity.

7. BY REASON OF PRACTICE

Hebrews 5:14 But solid food is for full-grown men, for those whose senses andmental faculties are trained by practice to discriminate and distinguish betweenwhat is morally good and noble and what is evil and contrary either to divine or human law.

James 2:17,18 So also faith, if it does not have works (deeds and actions of obedience to back it up), by itself is destitute of power (inoperative, dead).18But someone will say [to you then], You [say you] have faith, and I have [good]works. Now you show me your [alleged] faith apart from any [good] works [if you can],and I by [good] works [of obedience] will show you my faith.

Activation is valid.

Worship: Worship is a wonderful place to activate faith. Begin to exalt the Lord andinvite the Lord to reveal aspects of His beauty, glory and awesomeness. Reach out

to receive revelation of His magnificence and then respond by worshipping Him withgreater abandonment.

Prayer: Prayer time is also a good time to activate. “Come boldly before the throneof grace…” By faith, stand in boldness before the throne of grace and petition theLord.

Bible reading: Meditate on the promises of God and seek the scriptures to see thereality of the Kingdom of God. Invite the Lord to give you revelation of His glory andKingdom spleandour. Allow your mind, your imagination, your attention to focus on

“things above where Christ is seated”.

The benefits of journaling: You will find that as you journal what you see, hear, andexperience in the Lord that is seals, so to speak, what you are encountering. Manytimes in scripture the prophets were told to write what they saw or experienced.Meditate on the things that the Lord gives you throughout the day.

B. ARE THERE EXAMPLES OF GOD ENCOURAGING PEOPLE INTO THEGLORY/HEAVENLY REALM?

1. Moses – on Sinai Exodus 24

2. Jesus – invites 3 disciples up to the mountain where He was transfigured. Peter,James and John experience the spiritual/glory realm and heard the audible voice of God from heaven. This was a Jesus invitation – He “took them” into the experience(on mass – all of them)

C. ARE THERE POSSIBLE DANGERS OF SEEKING KINGDOM EXPERIENCES?

YES!! BEWARE!

1. Witchcraft and OccultismAny manipulation or activity operated in the spirit realm that is NOT under therule of Christ is WITCHCRAFT… which is a work of the flesh (under theinfluence of man’s fallen nature) and is a forbidden practice in scripture.

Be careful regarding “guided imagery”. This is where someone else tellsyou what to see. This can be manipulation. Stay in complete submission tothe Holy Spirit.

Duet 18:10-14; Gal 5:17-25

2. IDOLATRY AND FASCINATIONDuet 3:19 And beware lest you lift up your eyes to the heavens, and whenyou see the sun, moon, and stars, even all the host of the heavens, you bedrawn away and worship them and serve them, things which the Lord your

God has allotted to all nations under the whole heaven.

Rev 19:10 Then I fell prostrate at his feet to worship (to pay divine honors) tohim, but he [restrained me] and said, Refrain! [You must not do that!] I am[only] another servant with you and your brethren who have [accepted andhold] the testimony borne by Jesus. Worship God! For the substance(essence) of the truth revealed by Jesus is the spirit of all prophecy [the vitalbreath, the inspiration of all inspired preaching and interpretation of the divinewill and purpose, including both mine and yours].

3. EXPERIENCE ORIENTATION WHICH CAUSES IMBALANCE.When an individual begins to get too focused on spiritual experience, he/shecan begin to believe that the experiences are what produces spiritual maturity

rather than pure devotion, faith and obedience to the Word of God.

SPIRITUAL EXERCISES TO BUILD UP YOUR SPIRIT MAN.

• Sanctify your entire being and especially your thoughts, emotions, physicalbody and imagination (eyes of your heart). Ask forgiveness for any vain or unclean thoughts, feelings or imaginations that you have allowed in your life.

• Take a portion of scripture such as Revelation 4 and 5 and begin to submityour mind and imagination to the appearance of the throne room.

• Pray in tongues – this builds up your spiritual sensitivity.

•Worship Jesus – focus on Jesus as you worship.

• Confess the Word of God daily. This strengthens your spirit and renews your mind according to covenant promises.

• Choose to believe that you already are living in the heavenly realm withChrist in your spirit.

ACTIVATION

1. Focus on Jesus and His heavenly glory. Worship Him, adore Him.

2. Believe that your spirit is one with Him and that you are with Him in the throne room,seated with Him. This is based on the truth of the Word of God.

3. Invite the Holy Spirit to lead you into experience Heavenly Glory.

4. Operate in rest and in faith. Allow your imagination, your mind, your emotions andyour body, to submit to the Holy Spirit and to what He desires to reveal to you. Thereare a number of experiences that you might have. You might experience a faintpicture in your mind or a brilliant open vision. You might have the still small voice of God impart a thought to your mind or you might hear an audible voice. Most of your

encounters in the glory realm will be imparted to your mind and imagination. Meditateon what He is showing you and lean into His love and into anything that He leads youinto. Don’t be afraid to ask Him questions while you are in the midst of theexperience – this is about relationship.

5. Take a note of what He is showing you and try to remember it for later. (follow up onscripture studies to verify what you have experienced.) Pray about what you see,flowers, animals, numbers and see what the Lord reveals to you.

6. If it seems that you are not receiving, remember that you actually are “in your spirit”.Rest in that fact and rejoice in the wonderful truth’s concerning your new nature andyour position in heaven. Walk by faith and not by sight. Your experience by faith is just as valid as one whose body and soul are experiencing glory.

7. Fellowship with the Holy Spirit following your experience. Dialogue with Him. Journal.Build strong personal relationships with Him.

8. Glorify Jesus. Remember, that all experience in the Kingdom will lead you to adorethe King. Worship and exalt Him with all your heart.

9. Remember that you are able to access the glory realm whenever you desire.Throughout the day, allow your thoughts to meditate on the beauty of Jesus and theglory of heaven.

10. Ask the Lord to show you what to deposit in the world around you (i.e. His love,mercy, truth etc…). He might give you specific mandates, if so, obey Him and beblessed in His service. Remember – you are loved!
