Conference Themes

Throughout history we have seen the devastating effects of earthquakes in high seismic regions across the world. Recently, in Italy, Chile, Nepal and

Indonesia earthquakes with large magnitudes have caused serious loss of life and severe damage to infrastructures, making everyday living extreme-

ly difficult. Risks also arise from tsunamis, seen from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster, necessitating a global response to reduce hazards in

nuclear power plants. The economic and life losses associated with earthquakes are mostly related, directly or indirectly, to damage of buildings and

infrastructure. Population growth and poorly built housing are among the factors which have increased vulnerability to disasters following earth-

quakes. Seismic resilient infrastructure and risk reduction in developing countries are very important to reduce both the long term and short term

natural hazards. SeismiCON 2020 will bring together international experts from academia and industry in the field of earthquake and geotechnical

engineering, providing the opportunity to share and discuss their work and experiences with a focus on seismic design and analysis of structures and

foundations.

About Brighton Brighton is bursting with attractions: an outlandish Royal Palace, interesting museums, a beautiful beach, Brighton University, superb shopping and late-night pubs and clubs. Stretching out into the sea is the iconic, neon-lit Brighton Pier. Expect amusements, rides and invigorating ocean views. In the heart of the city, you’ll find an extravagant pleasure palace fit for a king. Brighton Pavilion was built for King George IV, who had ar-chitect John Nash reimagine it into the domed Indian style palace you can see today. Brighton’s colourful net-work of shopping streets known as The Lanes are awash with vintage gear, antiques and quaint cafes. The renaissance of Brighton’s culinary scene is real – and it’s happening now. Many, like the youth-led Isaac At in the North Laine, are dedicated to sourcing local, seasonal fare for their inventive cuisine. The Michelin-starred chef Matt Gillan now resides at the revamped Redroaster coffee house in Kemp Town, with his restau-rant Pike and Pine; and over in Hove, the spread of quality, trending eateries like Rootcandi and Farm Tavern across Western and Church Road.

Getting Here

Airport Connections

All the major London airports are within easy reach of Brighton. London Gatwick to Brighton, for example, is only

a 30 minute journey by train. So getting to Brighton from anywhere in the world is surprisingly easy. Below we've

listed details of all the major (and some minor) airports serving the region. London Gatwick airport is approxi-

mately 30km north of the city & just 30 minutes away by train. Gatwick serves a huge array of national and inter-

national flights and has a south and a north terminal. Low cost airlines serving Gatwick include Easyjet, British Air-

ways (BA), Aerlingus, and Norwegian Airlines.

Train and Coach Connections

Getting to Brighton & Hove is easy. It's just under an hour by rail from London, which is connected to all UK sta-

tions. The city is also served by a direct rail link from the Eurostar Service at St Pancras, as well as easily accessible

from the major ports of Dover, Portsmouth, Southampton and the local port of Newhaven. National Express

coaches also regularly service the city.
