Dear delegates,

Although it may seem as the session has just started, today is the last day for you to enjoy the charms of the DYF.

Since you came, you have experienced a lot of things, from which most you probably didn’t have time to process in a proper way.

This issue will hopefully make the after session time a bit less painful, and would at least once bring a smile to your face. There is one great thing in EYP, whenever you say goodbye to someone, you should know there is a chance you can meet that person at a future session. So delegates, see you!

Nothing makes the earth seem so spacious as to have friends at a distance; they make the latitudes and longitudes.

Your editress,Nives

The little red creature that surfed in the middle of the committee work and took the attention of every single person is a pretty fish called Karl. The name of this popular fish was suggested by the delegates, chairs and journalists. They had a task to be creative and write a name on the paper and put it into the box next to the fish. Dear president Ueli together with our lovely organizer Nemanja Drljaca were proposing the best four names, and making them defend their proposal. The first suggestion was “SUSHI”, then “FISH” , followed with “BARBIE” and they gave everyone one more chance to come up with something. The name that they come up with is actually the winner. And the wining name is…..(drums please) Karl. The name survived many attack speeches before taking the victory.

Entering the orga’s room for a coffee break and some snacks, everybody was surprised when they saw a fish in the aquarium on the desk. At once all the people forgot how tired they felt, how thirsty they were, an all of that happened because of the precious Karl. The little fish managed to be beloved by everyone in the first minute of its appearance. Staring at the fish, feeding and playing with it, everybody wanted to be involved with a new friend that was attending the session. The fish brought a brand new spirit into the forum, and established a different way of having fun on the breaks. karl got a really high level of popularity, even more than Lady Gaga, believe it or not.

The President is always a person who represents his country and also contributes to its international reputation. These days the Serbs are voting for their new president, so let´s have a brief look at both candidates.

In Serbia, both Nikolić and Tadić who are running for the president in the second round are trying to ensure their voters that they are the very best option, but are they really the most competent candidates or is there propaganda and lies hidden behind their nice words?

Would you be able to guess what was Nikolić´s former job before he went to the politics? You may not believe this but he was a grave digger. And this is not the only controversy concerning his name since his godfather is Vojislav Šešelj - former Serbian politician who is now enjoying his stay in Hague. Other rumors say that Nikolic has “bought“ a university degree.

The leader of the democratic party Boris Tadić has come to an end of his second governing period and will try to be reelected for the third time. You may object that in your country the President has the right to lead the country just in two governing 4-year periods. Not in Serbia where the government changed the constitution so Tadeic can be reelected for the third time .

Parliamentary elections in SerbiaNikolic is also involved in the Parliamentary elections and the party which was established by him won those elections. The most interesting fact is that the party from which he separated a few years ago (Serbian radical party) did not even make it to the parliament.

All together – this is the name of the political association which consists of many minority parties which would not be able to make it to the parliament alone.Parliamentary elections in GreeceOut of all the elections that took place this super-election-week, the outcome of those in Greece could probably be the most crucial for the future of the Eurozone.

The political scene in the country of philosophers used to be one of the most boring ones in Europe. The two main parties, socialistic PASOK and the conservative New Democracy (ND), were taking turns in governing the country and so there was no need for coalitions in more than 30 years, but the debt crisis has changed everything. The two “mortal enemies” – the PASOK leader Venizelos and Samaras from ND reluctantly agreed to cooperate and to try to fulfill the commitments resulting from the loans of the European Central Bank

Page 5: 3rd issue-Danube Youth Forum

Gossip is a strong handle so even though he won the trial, his preferences fell and the party introduced a new candidate - Francois Hollande. The socialists marched into the war with Sarkozy with a left-wing program of increasing the involvement in the economy and 75% tax on millionaires. However this was nothing compared to 100% taxation proposed by the communist Melenchon.

Colorful collection of candidates is completed by ultra right wing candidate Marine Le Pen who announced that in case of her winning France would leave the Eurozone and the EU. The campaign has had its highlights like photos of Hollande cleaning cows in a farm, regularly published photos of “Sarko” and Angela Merkel, who openly supported him. In the end, after just one TV debate (although brilliant speaker Sarkozy tied to lure his opponent into more confrontations), the left wing candidate won in the second round with 51,5% of votes.

and the IMF, despite the fact that just a short time before the elections Samaras boasted that the ND would be strong enough to govern on their own.

The actual result, however, was a brutal slap in the face of these both angry roosters (ND - 18,8%, PASOK – 13,2% ). Also the combination of the ultra-right wing party and communist party sitting in the same parliament hall seems to become a solid source of controversy for the next years. But nowadays´ Greece changes the governments faster than a girl changes clothes, even if miracle happened and coalition was formed, it can still break the next day.

Presidential elections in FranceProbably the most prestigious round of election-madness took place in France. The first episode happened in 2011 with a room maid in the main role. Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the candidate of the socialists and the former president of IMF, was accused of sexual harassment.

The COSI committee started feeling pretty cozy in the coziness of their committee room. And why wouldn’t they, when the atmosphere in the committee was quite relaxed with everyone participating equally. Smuggling, Cooperation among the “Danube” countries, organized crime, current European matters were some of many topics that the group discussed thoroughly. The real fun began when the experts engaged into the discussions. The argumentation was academic-like and all the participants were excited and enthusiastic to hear about the other side of the story Despite the fact that there were many different opinions during the debate, delegates analyzed what they heard and compared it to what they already knew.

Still cruising on the ship “Danube Youth forum”, a committee of Civil liberties, justice and home affairs found themselves halfway until the end of the cruise. After establishing the rules of not interrupting each other and of everyone being punctual and involved in the committee work, they started working really seriously. Planning time for the brainstorming, grouping, discussing and phrasing was smart so they could stick to the schedule, and make sure they will not be late with the resolution.

They succeeded in reaching the consensus and making compromises. What a great C(L)OSING to the resolution. After being the first committee to have finished the motion the COSI committee was free to take a pleasure of resting, playing games and getting ready for the evening activities that included open debate with the presenter of the EU in Serbia and a Serbian journalist Aristea Stakic; committee dinner in a Spanish restaurant and the Euroconcert. There is actually nothing that can describe this committee better than the song they created the second day of the teambuilding, so I leave you with these words: “We are the COSI, the mighty COSI and we are going to win this fight, we will fight till the night ‘cause we are fun and sweet”.

With quite staid faces they started brainstorming about discrimination on ethnic minorities in the Danube Region. Establishing the facts, problems and solutions. they were able to find the root of their motion. Everything was going pretty smooth, wise delegates took small but confident steps towards the strong resolution. Working hard and having little breaks, they managed to make a perfect balance between having fun and being workaholic.

ITRE runs the session

This committee has worked really hard. Their debates were really sophisticated and their solutions can be compared with the ones of the EU Parliament. Their aims were to prevent the pollution, acquire new sources of drinkable water, gain more health and economic growth. Water is our future and ITRE have tried to protect it for the next generations.

They found out that the problems of water waste and toxicities are the main reason for water pollution. And their solutions could be implemented through economic, social and agricultural cooperation. On the other hand, the main reasons for the Danube pollution are the industrial and domestic waste and agriculture.

I was present during almost the whole committee work which was really interesting for me and I didn’t want to go anywhere .The atmosphere was really warm and friendly in the committee room. At the same time I can say for sure that they did a great job. Everyone was involved in the work and took part in the discussion

Some delegates were more active ,some not so much, but the main point is that there wasn’t any “silent delegate” who didn’t want to express his or her opinion. Dear CULTure I believe that you had a great time during this forum and the committee work as much as I and your Chairperson Dmitro did .I would like to wish you good luck during the GA and I really hope that your resolution will pass.

The second day of the committee work started with the “Banana eating contest“ in which AFET showed their big competivness and ended on the solid second place just few seconds behind COSI.

After a whole day of committee work and finding solutions to the worldwide problems which actually haven´t yet been solved, the mini-AFET internal General Assembly could begin.

afetShort defence speech, attack and sum up speeches and the small open debate among delegates tested whether the solution of AFET is exact, complete and able to be applied in the realworld. The group practiced their ability to quickly answer to counteracting questions and found some mistakes/misunderstandings in the resolution which could be possibly attacked at the GA.And what is the result of our small research? 7 delegates in favor, none abstented and no one against

With bananas in their stomachs, the REGIonalists carried on putting their resolution together. Environmental, economical and social issues concerning the states of the Danube region were awaiting them. Although you could notice out of the faces of some delegates, that they had a hard night, they fought bravely and managed to put the resolution together. The members of the group around chair Fabian were switching on the post of “secretary”, writing the points that the group produced,

until every last bright idea was finally transferred from their heads to the paper and to the blackboard in front of them.

To cheer up the committee’s tired delegates, the tiring working part of the day ended with a game, which resulted in bloody murder of Justin Bieber by tossing him from the height of 300 meters into the waves of the ocean, when the deed was approved even by his date Selena Gomez.

A long time ago, when our dear session fish still lived in the Danube, enormous solar flares caused the weather to go berserk. Rain and heavy hailstorms went on until the river swelled and flooded all the flat land around it. The fish was carried onto the land and it felt as though it was taken along by a powerful Tsunami. When it was swimming in the flooded fields the weather started to change drastically again and a mighty heat wave dried up all the water. The little fellow was sure of living his last hours, he could even already see the forest fires in the distance, when suddenly a violent tornado lifted it up and took it along on a further journey.

Dizzy from all the rotation ,he at first did not even realize that it landed in Sweden, where temperatures were below zero and a bad epidemic was giving the people a very hard time. As soon as it fell onto the snow cover it caused a vast avalanche but before it crashed into anything an intense blizzard carried it away again just to drop it into the crater of a huge volcano. The volcano erupted and the fish was never to be seen again. The end.

Thank you ENVI for this wonderful time.

What did you say about the European Union?

Yesterday the Danube Youth Forum participants had a chance to hear more about the approach to the new European Union integrations from the Social Studies politician and presenter of EU in Serbia, Luca Ester Kadar. On the other hand, we had Aristea Stakic, Serbian journalist and an active member of the European Movement in Novi Sad.

Firstly, Luca introduced the audience with the common perceptions and challenges that Serbia is facing on its path towards EU.

Standing challenges that she recognized mostly were:

-Big changes in people’s lives-The public opinion that European Union is going to collapse-That Serbia should choose among 4 pillars (Russia, EU, China, USA)-Kosovo’s matter- Only Spain, Romania, Cyprus, Slovakia and Greece from 27 member states didn’t recognize Kosovo as an independent state-Current Serbian disappointment in Government -Perception that EU consists only of “man in black suits, shaking hand”

After the introduction, delegates had the opportunity to engage into the debate. First one to break the ice was Daniel Topolanek from Austria who considered Croatia as a “role model” and potential support to accession. And the round of questions followed.Daniel, another delegate from Austria started a discussion about the Eurozone and the question whether it would be beneficial to Serbia.

One of the most interesting questions was raised by a French delegate Jacques who wondered what would be the EU’s interest to admit Serbia.Specific for the Serbian region and the country itself is the factor of being a peacemaker, additionally there are some really important roads, smart young people, natural resources, farmers and most importantly- highest water resorts in Europe. That’s why EU needs SerbiaAs the debate moved forward, Julian Posch made a really good point about integrations unrelated to Serbia. For example Turkey who has been waiting for member status, and still has some unresolved issues.

Many things had changed since EU was founded; it experienced both pretty closed expansions and drastic ones like in 2003 when 10 member states were merged into the big EU family. Nowadays, there are 27 countries plus Croatia, which will officially enlarge the EU in March 2013.According to Luca’s words:” There are no negotiations, just criteria that has to be fulfilled and all the member states decide if there will be accession- unanimously”. According to some European polls, Serbian citizens have a feeling that all the neighbors are treated better but the fact is that situation is never black or white…Serbia has a bad guy image, even though the situation improved immeasurably among the others when the Serbian presidents apologized for the criminal acts. Another improvement that actually pushed Serbia towards candidature is imprisoning Serbian war criminals from 1990’s.

Having realized that the cost of the drinks was quite friendly, the delegates soon started leaving the leather sofas and filled the space in front of the counter, counting their dinars and rationing them in order to maximize the amount of drinks they could buy. At the same time, the joyful delegates began bringing the dance floor to life.

The DJ pleased the Swedish delegation by his implementation of ABBA hits in the playlist and it was obvious they knew the lyrics. The balcony proved to have really strong construction, as it succeeded in not falling even with 9 delegates, Cem and Marek standing on it. Serving like the source of fresh air, it proved to be a necessary place in the club. .

The trip to Novi Sad was extremely funny and short because some of the delegates started singing a song at the back of the bus. This time, instead of using the public transportation we had a private EYP party bus. Stephan and Alex spent the drive trying hard to get the point of the pointing game.

After the quick sightseeing of Novi Sad, exclusively provided by our hard-working organizers, was over and Nemanja´s trendy yellow umbrella was lowered, only then did the EYPers arrive in da klab.

Moreover, I would like to remind you of the thrill during the Eurovillage caused by the German and Austrian table. There is no need to say how delightful it was to try (read devour) the Mozart Kugeln or Milka with Oreos. This Session proved, once again, that chocolate stimulates innovations, focus, and contentment. Furthermore, wouldn’t you say that the two Swiss participants of the forum are always high spirited and happy-go-lucky?

By the time you have read this article you probably realized that the major addiction of the forum’s participants is left out.

Almost every individual who had attended a Session in EYP became strongly addicted. Additionally, when we add the travelling, the necessity to make friendships and self-challenging, it is possible that this addiction is as strong as a need for love.

Don’t forget to love, travel, challenge yourselves, enjoy the morning coffee and creamy chocolates. Make your lives joyful by all means with this adorable, life sweetening addictions.

sweet addictionsBy olivera popovic

For teenagers, life should be about developing individual identity, finding a place among the peers and establishing loyal friendships. You should never forget that the fountain of your youth is actually your mind, your talents, the creativity you bring to your life and the lives of people you love.

When you learn to tap this source, you will have enjoyed life to the fullest. Most frequently teenagers find encouragement and support in friends, but one thing that can never let your expectations and desires down is your personal craving. If you long for a gossip, you should chitchat, anytime you feel like.During EYP sessions or any other nerve-racking obligation you can quite often find your “liberation” in coffee. Turning coffee into a productive idea basically became the part of our everyday life. Despite the fact that we all create our days and spare time differently we all begin our day with one perfect habit. Black, Espresso, Instant, Macchiato, Starbucks flavored, Cappuccino, Mocha, Irish…

Numerous coffees produce the identical pleasure worldwide in every moment. Nevertheless, you must admit that you feel an immense pleasure and relief when some of the lovely orgas enter the room carrying this sizzling “drink of life”.

annoying warBy MARia bessarab

I think that most of you noticed that something strange was going on during the first day of committee work. Almost every committee was involved in a kind of war. They tried to annoy each other in some funny ways. I cannot miss the fact that they achieved it. This “annoying war” was started by LIBE committee. They annoyed CULT.

Entering their committee room, they whispered in the delegates’ ears “LIBE” and went away. That was unexpected and a little bit strange but funny. Members of CULT committee accepted their challenge and attacked ITRE. They suddenly rushed into the room with imaginary guns and “Mission impossible” song .The next step was made by LIBE again. They picked up ITRE’s chairperson and said that he was “LIBErated”.

They also did it to some other chairs they met in the corridor and they even “LIBErated” their own chairperson Alexandra.

CULT was really creative in their second annoying time and they kidnapped the chairpersons of AFET Committee while sitting on their chairs. They were really confused and surprised. It was really funny.

In my mind this is the best way to break the habit during committee work. It is a kind of brainstorming for the delegates when they are thinking about the way to exactly annoy other committees. But at the same time they had lots of fun implementing their plans.

Welcome to the last edition of our TOP 10 countdown. This anonymous also wins the special “botanic“ award for his contribution to the oxidation of a ground from which he has taken the tree.

Thank you for your attention and have a safe trip home from DYF !

Wind of changeBy nicole goetz

an interview with sandra stojanovic

In the course of this session you might have spotted a certain someone who resembles myself a lot when it comes to one specific physical attribute. Sandra Stojanovic, however, is more than just a random journalist at this session and I am very pleased to have had the honour of interviewing the current president of EYP Serbia for our last issue of THE CURRENT.

Sandra has in a way been in EYP Serbia since its very beginning as she participated at the first Serbian Nationals in 2007 as a delegate and was selected to attend the IS in Potsdam and later Bialystok. Many more sessions followed and her session history developed into quite an impressive list.

Since March last year she has taken the post as president of Serbia’s national committee as a result of her ambition to keep EYP Serbia alive and functioning. With her function starting in 2011 the structure and the whole fundament of their national committee underwent quite of a development. Furthermore her attitude towards the role she took, even though she never directly aspired it, is quite impressive: “If I’m going to be a president it’s gonna rock!”.

In a matter of practically no time, Sandra and a great team of Serbian alumni set up new means of communication, held regular meetings, initiated several alumni trainings, preliminary sessions or other little events.

The session we all participate at now is just one striking proof that the fresh methods which Sandra brought are working and very successfully so. So far she is very proud of how the session is running and how well her organisers are handling all the stressful moments that occur at such big sessions as this one. Since she’s been very involved in the organising and knows how much work was put into this event, its success has exceeded her expectations by far already.

In her position she unfortunately does not have the time to mingle with delegates, and also the officials only get to see her on rare occasions. Her attention lies more on the ones that do not have an active role at the session: the teachers. Not only the delegates are living an intense time here, your chaperones are enjoying quite a programme as well.

Page 19: 3rd issue-Danube Youth Forum

Moreover she hopes that all the participants already feel how they are contributing at the moment and that everyone feels like a small piece of this big EYP puzzle.

Personally, Sandra believes herself to be quite an all-rounder when it comes to skills and knowledge. Doing an art degree is indeed rather exceptional for such an involved EYPer as she is. To her, however, it has mostly positive aspects. When she got accepted to study art in Belgrade she decided to accept this challenge and she does not resent her decision at all. On the contrary, she described how much her skills in art and her creativity have brought her further in EYP and that she uses EYP methods to help new students and organise events at her university. On the whole I believe EYP Serbia is very lucky to have gone with the wind of change in the personification of Sandra and I am certain that many more EYPers will be able to enjoy international events such as the one where all of us are gathered right now.

Actually, some parts of their programme don’t differ that much from your own. At one point they visited a seminar about learning methods in Serbia to widen their horizons and they even did something similar to committee work.Sandra even told me that the most interesting moment for her at the session so far was when the teachers’ problem solving game in their committee work was to invent a problem solving game on their own. She explained how fascinating it was to see how they included what they have learned at the seminar and tried to incorporate a creative aspect as well. They were showing a lot of enthusiasm in working like that and I am certain the understanding of working and learning can only be beneficial for their students.

To my question about what she wants the delegates to remember from their time in Novi Sad when they are home from the session, she answered that she doesn’t believe they will remember a lot from the city or its surroundings. She wishes for them to just associate this place with the good time they hopefully will have had and the good experienced they will have made.

Page 20: 3rd issue-Danube Youth Forum

Once upon a time pan-European events such as the Eurovision Song Contest or the European Football Championship had the mere goal of bringing together the nations of our continent to compete against each with other and get in contact with other cultures surrounding us.

In the course of history, however, the background of those happenings was gradually more influenced by the politics of the participating states. A recent example for this are the statements from various European politicians about boycotting the UEFA European Championship 2012 in Poland and the Ukraine. Those measurements might be taken because of Ukraine’s refusal to treat the arrested former head of government Julia Timoschenko in an appropriate way for her disease.

Also the Eurovision Song Contest that will take place in Azerbaijan this year is associated with many internationally important political topics. One aspect that is omnipresent in the media are accusations from western European countries against Azerbaijan, saying that they disrespect basic human rights.

As a result of this Amnesty International sent open letters to potential representatives of several European countries, asking them to raise awareness of the circumstances in the host country of the ESC. While the opinion of most of them was that promoting their cause through an event such as the ESC would probably not be enough, others agreed with Amnesty International, however, do not want a cultural event to be disturbed by political issues.

the sore note of europeBy nicole goetz

Page 21: 3rd issue-Danube Youth Forum

The makers of this annual contest are much aware of the fact that their event draws the media’s attention towards Azerbaijan and all its negative parts and raises awareness of general political issues. They however also forewarn that the danger of the public turning their backs on the problems in Azerbaijan as soon as the show is over is very big.

Nevertheless I dare say that the Eurovision Song Contest does not only catch the public’s attention when it comes to political grievances of any hosting country but also has, indirectly, a political touch of its own.

Until 2009 the voting system on the allocation of the points to the fellow participants was based solely on telephone voting by the population of the country giving the points with the only rule that the nation cannot vote for itself.

Countries with a high number of immigrants which at the same time don’t have many of their countrymen living abroad evidently have a slight disadvantage when it comes to collecting votes.

The initiators of the competition realized the flaw in their system and changed it in 2009 to an arrangement where the final vote is a 50/50 combination of telephone votes and the votes of special juries. This way the musical quality of the winner is secured but the people still have an input into the final result.

I believe that with this new system the contest is developing again into a good direction and can again be taken as a serious singing contest without being too much influenced by the relationships of the participating states.

Page 22: 3rd issue-Danube Youth Forum

Everything that is good has an end; at least this is what many people say. Is this true? It probably is, because no one pays attention to the time, and the time flies really fast. One moment you were meeting your roommate, and the other you were packing your suitcases for the trip back home.

The feeling of sadness because you are leaving is awful, and you start feeling depressed and just want for the session to last at least one more day. But still, when you turn back, you will have memories that are going to remind you of what a great time you had, how many times you laughed. All the crazy things you did, those would be the best memories, such as:

You are definitely going to remember the hot time during the teambuilding, and the sunburns that you have on your skin.” How could I come to Serbia without sun cream?”

things you're gonna missBy jelena petrovic

You probably asked yourself this question. Next time when you attend sessions in Serbia, bear in mind to bring a sun cream, because temperature can get high, even up to 35-40 оC, believe it or not.

The next thing, I’m 100% sure you will always memorize all the parties you had. You got a unique chance to have a great experience and party in Novi Sad during the night time. Dancing, singing and screaming your favorite lyrics, you gained enough material to make a pretty good story for your friends back home.

Of course, you have to say goodbye to someone, to friends you met in this forum. I believe that there are many people that got into your heart in this short period of time. You saw them for the first time just a few days ago, but you have a feeling that you know them your whole life. That would be the magic of EYP.

Page 23: 3rd issue-Danube Youth Forum

Hello everybody! This Forum was awesome, unfortunately, after five amazing days, it has come to an end, which is very sad for all of us. After every great session or forum we have the same feeling- a bit sad, tired, happy etc. Since the beginning of the EYP we have had a common name for it-‘PED’, or in other words-Post EYP Depression. It is the effect of our positive experiences and challenges that we faced. In that sense, the word depression is probably misleading us. Certainly everyone will miss the fun they had with each other. But after all, EYP sessions are an exceptional and unique events which must end at some point. In the best case, post session time should be used for self reflecting and for motivation for even more EYP adventures. Remember, you should be in touch with all of your new friends, watch the videos, read the newspaper and look at the photos. Don’t forget each and every single moment you had here. This forum is a pyramid and all of us have put their own rock to make this forum as unforgettable and unique as possible. On Behalf of the press team I would like to say thank you & goodbye.
