PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Be empathetic and the world will be a better place because of you!

You are all aware of our MBA Way which along with our High Performance Learning and commitment to Global Goals are all embedded in our school life and provide the focus for our learning.

Les Hall - Academy Principal

Cognitive empathy is where we understand the emotions of others and this should be at the heart of every decision we make that might affect others. Thinking about how our own thoughts or actions will affect others is a good way of looking at things from different perspectives and can really help with everyone’s learning. For example, if you are seen to be keen, eager and ready to learn in class, that can encourage others to behave in the same way.

Good Luck Molly

Empathy is just one of our High Performance Learning VAA’s, Values, Attitude and Attributes, but is also a could way of viewing another of our VAA’s, being Ecological. Thinking about how we use, re-use and recycle everything that we do is a great way of using one VAA to compliment another, just by thinking about our actions we can improve things for everyone.

“If you judge people, you have no time to love them.” John Steinbeck.

For the next few weeks I will highlight some of the VAAs and our MBA Way and give you some examples of how you can use them to improve your learning and enjoy your time at Mounts Bay even more.

This week I would like everyone to think about how we can show empathy for one another. The traditional definition of empathy is is the ability to share and understand the emotions of others.

We often refer to empathy in our Restorative Practices when we ask others how they felt about a situation and how it affected us. In this situation there are a number of meanings for the word empathy, the effects or emotions we have seen in others and on how things affect us too. This is affective empathy. Where we talk about the effects of a dispute or disagreement.

Best wishes

In Science Club students looked at light. This included exploring colour mixing, diffraction, reflection and refraction. They used different techniques and

equipment including glass blocks and prisms to experiment with as well as seeing if they could produce the spectrum of light. There was even a small laser demonstration at the end.

What has my child been studying?

This quadmester, the students at Mounts Bay Academy have been studying a range of

texts in English - from Shakespeare’s ‘The Tempest’ (Y7) and ‘An Inspector Calls’ (Y11), to Willy Russell’s play ‘Blood Brothers’ (Y9) and Charles Dickens’ ‘A Christmas Carol’ (Y10). Meanwhile, Year 8 students have been exploring different points of view in the form of non-fiction texts, focusing on elements of rhetoric to enable them to effectively write and speak in a persuasive manner.

What does homework look like in English?

Homework for all Year groups broadly adheres to the following:

Recently, when studying a text such as ‘The Tempest’, ‘Blood Brothers’, or ‘A Christmas Carol’, we have been using Seneca (an interactive revision website) for homework tasks. Students log in to

their account and are set particular assignments. Once finished, students are given a percentage and have the opportunity to revisit any weaker areas.

All homework tasks are set on Firefly and are also uploaded into a dedicated homework folder, also on Firefly.

A Look at English

Week 1 - Independent research, usually on the context of their topic; Week 2 - Revision of the Knowledge Organiser in preparation for a quiz; Week 3 - A self-marked, low stakes test e.g. spelling/punctuation, or

practice exam question for KS4 students; Week 4 - Analysis of either themes, characters, or an extract; Week 5 - Comprehension questions based on the studied text (which are then peer or self marked), or a Seneca-based assessment; Week 6 - Preparation for the practice assessment; Week 7 - Intervention at the teacher’s discretion - this will be focused revision on a particular area or topic that the teacher feels the class needs to revisit following their practice assessment; Week 8 - 'Flipped learning’, where students study a particular aspect of the next quadmester’s topic.

What does assessment look like in English? This quadmester, students in Year 7 will complete a formal written assessment. This will

be teacher marked, and their result will be included in their report. Year 8 students will write and deliver a speech; Year 9 will present a collaboratively written drama script to their class; Year 10 and Year 11 students will produce the final draft of a piece of writing they have been working on in response to a GCSE question.

Revision and preparation for all of the above will be included within their homework tasks, and any appropriate resources that may be beneficial will be shared with students via Firefly.

What does feedback look like in English?

We regularly use verbal feedback to help students identify how and where they are making progress in their English lessons. We also use ‘whole class feedback’ sheets following assessments or extended pieces of writing. These outline common misconceptions and highlight particular moments of genius. Students also

regularly reflect on their progress in purple pen by completing ‘progress checks’, in which they outline what they have improved on and review any

targets they set themselves previously. In addition, there are regular opportunities for peer and self assessment built into each programme of study. Finally, once each semester, each class teacher will additionally mark and provide feedback (in green ink!)

on an extended piece of work produced by the students.

How can I support my child with their English work?

One key way to help your child with their English work is to encourage as much reading at home as possible. The more young people read, the better writers they will be and the more they will be able to understand and decode texts. We recommend that all students spend at least 30 minutes per day reading.

In a recent survey of Year 7 English students, it came to light that parents giving feedback on their work was one of the most useful homework tasks they had been set in Quadmester 1. With that in mind, reading your child’s work and then offering constructive feedback is another way you can show support.

Year 11 students are invited to attend intervention sessions after school with their English teacher. These run each school day (except Tuesday), and allow students to focus their revision and receive specialist guidance from a member of the English faculty. Year 11s should be encouraged to attend as many of these as possible.

Finally, when it comes to the core texts, students must read these several times before their examinations, and it is never too early to get ahead - so exposing your child to these as much as possible will help them when it comes to studying them in Years 10 and 11.

Tassomai Top 20

The Tassomai App has been used by our Year 11 students as part of their revision in preparation for their Science GCSEs.

Feedback from previous year groups has been overwhelmingly positive and statistics have shown that if students complete more than 80% of the Tassomai course, then they could achieve one grade above their target! Keep up the good work!

On Thursday night, Mounts Bay went to a football fixture at Hayle Academy. There were boys teams from Year 8 and 10 and a team of Year 9 and 10 girls.

The girls started off slowly but as the first half progressed they managed to gain a good tempo. At half-time the score was 3-1. The girls also did well and kept their pace up well into the second half. They continued bravely with the score ending 5-2 to Mounts Bay. Well done girls!

The Year 8 team did exceptionally well managing to score four goals by half-time. However, after the game had kicked off again for the second half, they fought well to keep the win. It was heading for full time and the score was 4-4. Just seconds before the full time whistle blew, the home side scored a fabulous free kick from near the half way point. The final score for the Year 8s was 5-4 to Hayle. Well done boys!

The Year 10 boys played exceptionally well scoring all the match goals and keeping Hayle at 0 throughout. The game ended in 7-0 to Mounts Bay. Well done everyone!

Ten Teams from Penwith Primary Schools took part in the KS1 School Games Multi Skills event lead by the Year 9 Sports Leaders. All children participated in five activities and each school was split into two groups of six.

Children gained points for completion of the activities and for demonstrating the School Games Values. Points were combined to determine the placings overall. The five activities were Treasure Island, Running Goalie, Keepie Uppies, Opposites Attract and Ladder Relays.

The MBA leaders received well deserved praise from the Primary Teachers for their organisation, manner and explanation to the younger primary pupils. Well done!

Everyone had a fantastic time and the event has an amazing atmosphere. Well done to the MBA Sports Leaders who did a fantastic job organising the individual events and scoring.

"This morning, primary school Years 3 and 4 came to compete in an indoor athletics competition and the Sports Leaders helped to run the event. It was a great experience for leadership and the hours went towards us completing

the qualification. In the afternoon Years 5 and 6 came to compete as well. It was hard work but we all enjoyed the experience. Everyone was allocated a different job and we all found it great to teach and encourage the children and get them really enjoying sport." - Sports Leaders
