It can be easy to put pressure on ourselves to succeed. If we’re not keeping up with the perceived “good life” of those around us, we feel anxious and disappointed. Some of the Gospel stories about fruitfulness can seem to play out in this fashion. “For three years now I have )'3$&4(&,$+%)#&'5&5%641&'(&1#4,&/0&1%$$&761&#+8$&5'6(.&none. So cut it down.” The message seems to be clear. Abide in God and bear fruit! Stand apart from God and be barren. But what happens when we’re trying, but the growth we wanted doesn’t seem to be coming our way? 9#+1&45&41&5$$2,&24:$&245$&;6,1&4,(<1&7$+%4(0&5%641=

This Sunday, Jesus gives us a sign of hope. “[The gardener] said to him in reply, ‘Sir, leave it for this year also? it may bear fruit in the future.” How quick we can 7$&1'&;6.0$>&?$%#+-,&@'6&,1+%1$.&'61&A$(1&*41#&#40#&hopes and big ideas for getting closer to God. Maybe things haven’t gone exactly like you thought. It can be easy to lose patience with our failures or slow growth. We shouldn’t be too quick to assume that God has given up on us. He hasn’t.

The same ideas apply to those around us. Perhaps we’re 1#$&-2+(1$%&'5&1#$&/0&1%$$B&9$&$C-$)1&+&)$%1+4(&+3'6(1&'5&0%'*1#&5%'3&,'3$'($&4(&'6%&245$D&+(.&1#$@&;6,1&+%$(<1&measuring up. Let today’s Gospel be a gentle nudge for mercy. As Lent continues to unfold, be patient with yourself and those around you. Wait for God to provide the growth.

WHY DO WE DO THAT?

Question: Our Catholic grade school is doing a penance service this Lent. Do young children really need to go to Confession? How much sin can they really have?

Answer: Ask any mom about her children, and see how many would say she has a brood of perfect angels! Parents know that kids do things that are wrong and they often know they’re doing it! Even toddlers have a sense of right and wrong. The Church recognizes that their minds and consciences are not yet fully developed, however, and typically waits until age seven to offer the sacrament of Confession. Around that age and beyond, most young people, when asked, can easily explain why something is wrong.

Confession for children is an excellent way to help 1#$3&%$E$)1&'(&1#$4%&+)14'(,&+(.&+))$-1&%$,-'(,474241@&for their behavior. It helps them to grow in their understanding of sin and how it affects others. This helps them to form their consciences and make better choices in the future. Most importantly, they learn the value of forgiveness, both given and received. Rather than singling out what’s wrong, Confession offers hope and a new start! Children can grow in understanding God’s unconditional love and develop a sense of inner .40(41@&1#+1&1%+(,)$(.,&1#$4%&5+424(0,B&F'1&7+.&5'%&/8$&minutes and an “Our Father” or two!

MUMS will be meeting Thursday, April 4th from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. in Benedict Hall at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. MUMS is a program for mothers of all ages. This Lenten season is an opportunity to repent and turn back. The mystery of God’s presence is revealed in and through the ordinary events of life as the birth of Christ reminds us. God told Moses through the burning bush, “I am who am”. And so he reminds us today. Let us turn away no more and turn back to truth.

HOLY HOUR OF ADORATION WITH DEACON MIKE

!"#$%#&'()*&+#$,(*&-).#&/(0&$&1("2&1(30&(/&Adoration in the church every Wednesday evening at 6:00 p.m. through Wednesday, April 10th.

91 lives saved since Ash Wednesday to March 17.

People ask me if I am afraid to stand in silent prayer at the Boulder Abortion Clinic, 1130 Alpine Street. I do not. I have done it with groups, by myself, with my young daughter in the car with me. I understand why others may not feel safe there. Some passersby make negative comments; many give us the thumbs up. If you are unable to stand with us, there are other options to participate in the Spring Campaign of 40 Days for Life.

Consider setting aside time each day to read the daily email sent by the campaign (sign up at https://40daysforlife.com/). Each day there are stories from around the world of what is happening, a reading from the Bible and a prayer for the day. There are two books from campaign leaders that have 40 chapters, one to read every day; stories of lives saved and changed.

Consider fasting for these 40 days as we do on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Offer your fasting for change of hearts and minds to end abortion, here in Boulder and around the world.
