The TOEFL test is commonly taken by non-

native speakers of English who need to submit

evidence of their language proficiency when

they apply to study in English colleges and

universities.

A new version of the TOEFL has recently been

introduced( IBT).

IBT = Internet Based Test

Where and when can you take the TOEFL?

The test is usually taken on a computer in a

test center.

Candidates may take the TOEFL only once a

calendar month.

What Does the TOEFL Test Include?

Section I: Listening Comprehension

Section II: Speaking BREAK (10 MINUTES)

Section III: Reading Comprehension and

Vocabulary

Section IV: Essay Writing

TIME = Key To Success The entire test takes approximately four

hours to complete. In the Listening section, you are given 15

to 25 minutes to answer the questions. In the Speaking section, you will be given

between 15 and 20 minutes to answer the questions.

In the Reading section, you will be given 70 to 90 minutes to complete the questions. This also includes the time you spend reading the passages.

In the essay section, you will be given 30 minutes to complete your writing.

How Many Questions?

The number of questions in the Listening section ranges between 30 and 49.

The number of questions in the Speaking section ranges from 20 to 25.

The number of questions in the Reading section ranges from 44 to 55.

The number of question in the essay section ranges from 1 to 2.

Scores There is no passing or failing score! Score requirements are set by individual

colleges and universities.  You’ll receive a score from 0 to 30 for each

section and a total score of 0 to 300 for the entire test.

Scores are valid for two years after your test date.

Your scores will be ready in ten days, and you can view them easily online.

They will also be mailed to you if you select that option when you register.

Scores are sent free to up to four institutions that you select prior to your test day.

Score Values and Time Listening Comprehension

Value: 30 pointsTime: 15 minutes(the clock only runs when you are answering and NOT when you are listening)

The scores Your TOEFL score will range from 0 -

300. The three section scores, Listening

Comprehension, Structure, and Reading Comprehension, are combined into a single score.

Each section is worth 30 raw points.

What's different about the test?

The TOEFL IBT has a new Speaking section

There is no longer a Structure section. Lectures and conversations in the

Listening section are longer. Note-taking is allowed The speech in the listening material

sounds more natural. The Reading section has new

questions . The Writing section requires typing.

What to do on the test day?

Arrive 30 minutes before the assigned test time.  Check-in procedures take time. 

Bring photo bearing identification, as described in the TOEFL registration bulletin.

Bring your test confirmation information.

Listening 30 to 39 questions

Tests listening skills for both short conversations, and longer academic conversations.

Reading 30 to 36 questions

Tests reading comprehension skills. Question types include multiple choices and fill in the blank .

Writing 2 essays Tests writing skills. Students are presented with two separate essay questions to which to respond.

Speaking 6 speaking questions

Tests speaking skills; test taker's voice is recorded during the exam. Question types include. Independent Topics. Integrated Topics .

The total score is the sum of the four skill scores.

each section of the test.

Read each question carefully

Pace yourself so that you have enough time to answer every question.

Answer every question in each section.

In the Listening section, confirm your answer only when you are certain you are ready to move on to the next question.

IBT Scoring

The score report universities receive will contain:

Four skill scores

- Reading 0-30

- Listening 0-30

- Speaking 0-30

- Writing 0-30

A total score: 0-120

Student score reports will also contain performance feedback.

Sections

The TOEFL test measures all four English-language skills. It takes about four hours.
