2020 Priorities: Reading, Spelling & Community Partnerships
Principal’s Message. Hello Parents, Caregivers and Community Members, The first week of school has come and gone and we have already hit the ground running. I would like to extend my thanks for the warm welcome I have received—it really has been lovely connecting with Dalveen staff, students, families and community members. I am looking forward to working alongside you all for a productive and satisfying school year. Over the next few weeks I will be meeting with each of our families to listen to your feedback and ideas for our school that will help us develop a clear direction for the future.
2020 School Priorities: Our improvement agenda for 2020 continues to be reading, with the added priorities of Spelling and Community Partnerships. I look forward to tabling these priorities for discussion at the next P&C Meeting and listening to your ideas on how we can work together for the benefit of our students. Staff have already attended some professional development sessions around these priority areas. Mr McGahey attended a reading course in Stanthorpe over the pupil free days, focusing on learning support and Mrs McCauley and I have recently attended a Words Their Way session at The Summit State School. I have also attached some information about decoding, comprehension and fluency skills that may help you support your child’s learning. Rugby League, Swimming & Softball:
· Students will once again be participating in the Sporting Schools program with Rugby League commencing this Friday from 9.30am—10.30am at The Summit State School.
· Interschool Friday sport also begins this week from 1pm at Applethorpe State School. We have started to practice our softball skills and the pitch will be marked out over the weekend. Please see the draw attached.
· Swimming lessons at the Stanthorpe Pool will commence Friday of Week 3 from 11.30-12.30pm. There is a calendar attached with the corresponding dates, times and transport arrangements.
· Could you please return all permission slips to Ms Blake in the office as soon as possible so that transport arrangements can be confirmed.
Congratulations and well done to our students who entered items into the recent Stanthorpe Show both at a school and personal level. Congratulations to Joel who was awarded a 3rd place and Fletcher who was awarded a highly commended for their school art work—great job! I am looking forward to displaying our entries when they are returned to school for everyone to enjoy, Our students are a credit to the school, families and Dalveen community and we are very proud of their creativity and efforts.

Swimming Trials: As you are aware the Small School Swimming Carnival was cancelled in Term 4 last year and a swim trial will take place on Wednesday afternoon from 5pm onwards to provide a representative pathway. Lachlan and Addie will be competing and we would like to wish them lots of fun and all the best. Reading Strategies:
The following strategies will help with your child’s reading journey. Please take the time to discuss these strategies with your child at home :-)
Reading Comprehension Strategy of the Fortnight: “Finding Word Meaning in Context”
Sometimes when you read, you find a word whose meaning you do not know. Often you can tell the meaning of the word by the way the word is used in the sentence. This is
called understanding word meaning in context. Questions about meaning in context ask you to find the meaning of a word that may not be familiar to you. If you have trouble
choosing an answer for a question like this, try each answer choice in the sentence where the word appears in the passage. See which answer choice makes the most sense.
Reading Fluency Strategy of the Fortnight: “Accuracy”
Decoding Strategy of the Fortnight: “Flippy Dolphin”
