WelcomeWelcome to the Creative Peninsula event, Northern Ireland’s premier celebration of Art and Craft.

Now in its 16th year, this thriving annual event features Open Studios, Tours, Exhibitions, Workshops, Demonstrations and more, all taking place throughout the beautiful and picturesque Ards and North Down Borough.

The region is well known for its many Artists and Makers and during the event visitors have the opportunity to view their work, purchase or commission a unique piece or try their hand in a workshop.

The beautiful location of Bangor Castle Walled Garden is the backdrop for an outdoor afternoon of hand crafted wood and art and craft demonstrations in many mediums.

Wood ArtThe Irish Wood Turners’ Guild will carry-out demonstrations under the beautiful Victorian band stand and also guide individual artists and makers.

There will be a range of free demonstrations throughout the afternoon of different techniques including lathe work and hand carving. Beautifully crafted items will be on display from bowls to sculptures and hand carved to machined.

Artists & MakersTake this unique opportunity to interactwith Artists and Makers who will beproviding free demonstrations throughout the afternoon as well as exploring the Garden’s horticultural personality and its two unique sculptures inspired by the Borough’s maritime history.

Bangor’s landscape is about to change, and this is an opportunity to document the town through the eyes of local artists.

Artists and makers are invited to an alfresco art session, a “sketch walk” starting at Brompton and moving along the beautiful coast finishing at Queen’s Parade. This will be a guided walk taking in local viewpoints, landmarks and places of interest covering landscape, heritage, history and architecture with opportunities to sketch as you go.

BLOCKING IN COMPOSITIONWITH RAY ELWOOD Sat 5 Aug 10am - 4pm£30 – Includes materials

Tone can be more beautiful than colour. This workshop will focus on line and wash drawing with washes of tone in sepia and yellow ochre. Ray will explain the techniques used in portrait and still life painting with a limited palette. Paper and paints will be provided. Participants should bring a 2b pencil, a number 8 water colour brush and a dinner plateto use as palette.

LEAPING FOXES AND HARES WITH JOY GRAYMonday 7 Aug10am - 4pmFee £40 – Includes materials

Create your very own beautiful copper sculptures of leaping foxes and hares, made from recycled wire. In this specialised workshop, participants will learn how to prepare recycled wire to achieve various patinas through experimenting with sea salt and vinegar.

Design and create your own unique mirror in opaque art glass using the Tiffany/copper

foil technique. Irene McBride of Discovery Glass will teach you the processes required

MY INSPIRATIONAL PHRASE WITH DEBRA WENLOCK

A short workshop using oil, pastels and

watercolour to create an inspirational “illumination”. Make a mini artwork from a motivational phrase or word, a mantra to

kick-start an ongoing creative habit.

Leave with a framed piece to keep in a prominent position in your home to refresh

your creative commitment or bring you inspiration, motivation or a just a smile

on a daily basis.

CONTEMPORARY POINTED PEN CALLIGRAPHY WITH JACQUIE BRACHI

Thursday 10 Aug10am - 4pm

This workshop will explore the use of the pointed pen and how it demands a different

technique to the square nib to create contemporary alphabetic variations.

By the end of the workshop participants will understand how to create an alphabet and

different ways it can be put into practice. The use of metallic paints will also be introduced during the day to create a

unique piece of work to take away.

SCULPTUREWITH SHARON REGANThursday 10 Aug10am - 4pmFee £40 – materials provided

Add a little bit of happiness to your garden and have fun doing it. During this one day workshop local ceramicist Sharon Regan will help you create a quirky plant pot holder in the shape of a head or a hedgehog, just add a plant to make the hair/prickles. Your piece will then be fired and ready for collection 2 weeks later. Bring a hand towel and an apron.

ITALIC AND INTRODUCING VARIATIONS WITH JACQUIE BRACHIThursday 10 Aug6pm - 9pmFee £20

This session will look at the italic hand and how it is constructed. How we can alter it and make it more dynamic. The class will be suitable for all levels as each student will progress at their own rate. A small project will be completed using the students’ knowledge.

LETTING GO WITH LES SHARPE

A workshop designed for those artists who complain about not being able to loosen

up and let themselves go.

The day is made up of a series of practical exercises which will gradually take people out of their comfort zones and introduce

them to some techniques and ideas which will help them to free themselves from

the normal restraints of the need for perfection or the fear of making a mistake.

This is all about happy accidents and embracing serendipity in their work.

The workshop will suit all levels as it is purely about having a go and above all,

having fun while you do it.

PRINTED TEXTILE WORKSHOP WITH SHAUNA MCGOWAN

Saturday 12 Aug10am – 4pm

Fee £50 – materials provided

This experimental and vibrant workshop is perfect for those with an interest in surface

design, printmaking and textiles. Using heat reactive dyes playfully painted onto paper we will then colourfully bring fabric to life using a heat press. Layering shapes and

stencils onto the fabric with colour can build up patterns.

Using objects such as feathers, leaves, stencils, threads, doilies we will build up exciting and vibrant patterns on fabric. Participants will leave with a variety of

imaginative and vibrant fabric samples.

INTRODUCTION TO CYANOTYPE WITH ALICE BURNSFriday 11 Aug1pm – 4pmFee £20 – materials provided

An introduction to the historical photographic process of cyanotype. Participants will create their own unique photograms using a heliographic sunlight printing process, which produces a stunning blue print on fabrics and paper.

Participants should bring thin leaves, grasses and flowers that are dry. Thin objects e.g. lace; paper cut outs or any other thin materials to print from.

Peninsula, Drink and Draw found popularity in New York in recent years and now the

trend has been imported to the UK.

Open Studios Covering the length and breadth of the Ards Peninsula and North Down, Artists’ studios are the place to visit to sneak a peek ‘behind the scenes’ of the Artist at work.

Don’t miss the chance to meet a host of creative people including ceramicists, glass artists, painters and spinners, wood turners and jewellery designers; see them at work or watch the many free demonstrations on offer.

Each studio is numbered so that it can be easily found on the map at the back of the brochure.

If visitors have particular access needs, it is best to contact the studio directly in advance. Remember also that many studios may not accept debit or credit cards so it is best to take some cash along as an alternative method of payment for purchases.

Julianne Skillen is Development Manager for Community Arts Partnership and holds a degree in History of Art, a Post Graduate Certificate in Higher and Further Education and a Post Graduate Certificate in Arts in the Community from Queen’s University Belfast. She has worked in the community, voluntary and statutory sectors in Northern Ireland for 17 years, working within project management and funding in the fields of community development, disability, education, play, Black and Minority Ethnic communities and of course the arts, where her heart lies. She has been a non-executive director for several organisations including ArtsEkta, Cahoots Theatre Company NI and the Northern Ireland Visual Arts Forum.

Belfast-based artist Charlotte Bosanquet has something unusual up her sleeve to

Marianne is the director of Boom! Studios, a social enterprise that provides workspace and headspace for the local creative industry. Like many creative practitioners she has built up her skills in communications to grow the business.

Sarah has run a successful jewellery practice for over 20 years and now mentors creatives on ‘real life’ ways to run creative businesses!

Marianne and Sarah connected during their time at Project 24, Bangor and have since had a number of energetic conversations around creative business that they want to share.
