Aerospace in Colorado

•  #1 in private sector employment per capita,

3rd overall; 17% growth over the last 10 years

•  Almost 170,000 primary jobs (private sector and government)

•  Not “just” big business… Half of Colorado’s over 400 aerospace companies employ fewer than 10 people

•  $1.8 Billion in NASA Prime Contracts (#3 in the country)

Aerospace touches every aspect of the Colorado Economy

Colorado: Home of GPS III •  To sustain and modernize the constellation, the Air Force and

Lockheed Martin are building the next generation of GPS satellites

•  Current generation is wearing out; GPSIII technological improvements

•  With first launch ~ 2016, the GPSIII Satellites will provide:

–  3 times more accuracy –  3-8 times more power –  Improved earth coverage –  Compatible with European

GPS Constellation –  Increased design life –  And much more

“The fact that Colorado is a leading space state is not very well known, despite the fact that Colorado ranks second nationally in private-sector aerospace employment,” says Edgar Johansson, CSBR President, in a news release. “This aerospace road trip is one way we are trying to promote Colorado’s strength in the industry.”

“Today is just the starting point,” said roundtable chair Stacey DeFore. “We want to see this develop into a dialog we can continue in the future. And we will be back.”

“Colorado’s aerospace industry has hundreds of small- and medium-size companies along the Front Range,” said Gov. John Hickenlooper, in a news release. “Many of our communities across the state have companies that could provide the components and services that are currently sourced outside of Colorado. Aligning these efforts will strengthen Colorado’s standing as a leader in the aerospace industry and benefit our economy.”

Why Space is important…

•  National Security •  Economic Security •  Economic Benefits •  Weather Forecasting •  Drives Innovation •  Drives Technology

Do we understand and value

the benefits of continuing space exploration?

Did you know it came from

space?

•  Metals, Materials, Electronics

•  Improvements in mammogram technology

•  GPS is used for much more than navigation!

–  Precision Timing: Internet, Finances, etc. –  Micro-targeting of pesticides and fertilizer

Only a few of hundreds of examples…

“Nobody’s dreaming about tomorrow anymore. The most powerful agency on the dreams of a nation (NASA)

is currently underfunded to do what it needs to do.”

“During the Apollo era, you didn’t need government programs to convince people that doing science and engineering was good for the country. [And you didn’t

need to convince kids to pursue STEM.] It was self-evident. And even those not formally trained in

technical fields embraced what those fields meant for the collective national future.”

Ways to Get Involved

Page 22: 4 - Aerospace in Colorado - Space Grant.pptx

Citizens for Space Exploration (CSE) is a multi-state organization comprised of U.S. taxpayers who support America's investment in human space

exploration. We are private citizens, small business owners, students, teachers, space and non-space

business representatives, and county and municipal officials.  Our mission is to promote

awareness of the benefits of America’s Human Space Exploration Program and support for NASA.
