What is the major determinant ofECF osmolarity?
ECF sodium concentration
[Na+] 145 mmol/L
comp anions HCO3 Cl-
mmol/L of sodium salts 145 x 2
Osmolarity of sodium salts 145 x 2 mOsm/L

Total Body Sodium ?x = ECF sodium concentration ?

Why is total body sodium the main determinant of
ECF volume?
coz sodium is the main determinant of the ECFosmolarity.
Increased sodium dietary intake
increased ECF osmolarity
coz the osmolarity /ADH (hypothalmus/pituitary) mechanism
is very sensitive ,
This very soon results in increased conservation of waterto normalize the ECF osmolarity
and so the ECF______ _ _ _ rease.

Changes in volume in ECF may or may notaffect
intracellular volume
It depends on whether
there is any change in the ECF osmolarity
regardless of the ECF volume changes
