Elements of Arts
The elements of art are a commonly usedgroup of aspects of a work of artused in
teaching and analysis, in combination withthe principles of art. Lists of the elementsof art vary somewhat but typically includethe following: color, value, form, line, space, shape, and texture. Direction andsize are added by some sources.

LINE
It is mans own invention. It does not exist in nature.
The artist uses lines to imitate or representobjects and figures on a flat surface.
Simplest , most , most primitive , mostuniversal means of creating visual art.
Lines always have direction . They are always active. The prolongation of points is said to create
a LINE.

7/82
Qualities of lines
They maybe short or long, fine or thick, heavy or light, wavy or jagged, straight or
curved. They usually delineate shapes.
Used across or within a shape, they givethe effect of solidity or create an illusion of
volume, or rough or smooth texture.
A series of heavy lines drawn close to eachother creates an impression of roughness.
A few light strokes can give a sensation ofsoftness and delicacy.

COLOR
Coloror colouris the visual perceptualpropertycorresponding in humans to the
categories called red, green, blueandothers. Color derives from the spectrumof light(distribution of lightenergy versuswavelength) interacting in the eye withthe spectral sensitivities of the lightreceptors.

COLOR
Coloris a series of wave lengths whichstrike our retina.
It is derived from light, whether natural orartificial.
Pigmentation(or color quality) enablesobjects to absorb some of the colors andreflect only one.

NEUTRAL COLORS
Someobjects do not have colors. These colors are not present in the color
spectrum. They do not have any color quality instead
they differ in the quantity of light thatthey reflect.
They are called neutrals since they do notreflect any one distinct color.
BLACKreflects no light at all; WHITEreflects all colors and GRAYresults from
partial reflection of light.

COLOR
The science of color is sometimes calledchromatics. It includes the perception of
color by the human eye and brain, theorigin of color in materials, color theoryin
art, and the physicsof electromagneticradiationin the visible range (that is,
what we commonly refer to simply aslight).

1. Hue
The quality which gives color its name.
It refers to a purecolorone without tintor shade(added white or black pigment, respectively).
A hue is an element of the color wheel.
Hues are first processed in the braininareas in the extended V4 called globs.

Tint & Shade
Tintis the mixture of a colorwith white, which increases lightness, and a shadeis
the mixture of a color with black, whichreduces lightness. Mixing a color with anyneutral color, including black and white, reduces the chroma, or colorfulness, while
the hueremains unchanged.

Lightness(sometimes called value or tone)
a property of a color, or a dimension of acolor space, that is defined in a way to
reflect the subjective brightnessperception of a color for humans along alightnessdarkness axis. A color'slightness also corresponds to its
amplitude.

Types of Shading
In subtractive color(i.e. paints) valuechanges can be achieved by adding black
or white to the color. However, this alsoreduces saturation. ChiaroscuroandTenebrismboth take advantage ofdramatic contrasts of value to heighten
drama in art. Artists may also employshading, subtle manipulation of value.
