ERATH 4-Hers win BIG at STATE Erath County 4-Hers brought home honors from Texas 4-H Round-Up in early June. This year the contest was held at Texas Tech University in Lubbock. This was the first time the event was not held at Texas A&M University.
Round-Up began with the awards assembly recognizing scholarship winners from across Texas – over $2 million was given to Texas 4-Hers. Kelley Royal and Chase Vineyard each won $5,000 from the Davidson Family Foundation while Rebecca Wilson won $1,000 from Clarion Lubricants.
After the first round of contests, Chase Vineyard, Erath 4-H member and the State
4-H Council president, opened the assembly with a speech encouraging 4-H members, families and agents to get excited about the upcoming events.
The first contest was the 4-H Fashion Show. Kelley Royal, celebrated her last 4-H Round-Up contest by winning 1st place in the Buying Formal division of the Fashion Show! Kelley had to interview with the judges answering questions about the price, quality, fabric, and fiber content of the formal she bought for this competition.
Erath 4-H had two teams that competed in the Mohair Judging Contest. Erath Team #1 members were Kenna Faulkenberry, Scotta Faulkenberry, Kylie Manning and Chelsi Vineyard. Erath Team #2 members were Conner McKinzie, Laurie Tolboom and Bayli Williams. This was the first year to judge Mohair for a majority of these team members.
The Erath 4-H Livestock Judging team judged 8 classes and were asked to give 4 sets of reasons; this was the team’s first time competing in the qualifying contest. Team members were Cody Belew, Audrey Turner, Chase Vineyard and Quinton Whitfield. Chase Vineyard was 8th High Individual in the Sheep and Goats division.

4-H ROUND-UP IN LUBBOCKLaurie Tolboom won 2nd place for her Educational Presentation in the Clothing and Textiles Division on “Horse Show Fashion.” This presentation on how Horse Show fashions have changed over the years included a powerpoint along with clothing examples. It was particularly interesting because Laurie was able to incorporate her own fashion sense into the presentation by showing the clothes she made for competitions and compare her cost with the cost of buying ready-made clothing.
Morgan Cavitt won 3rd for her Educational Presentation – Open Ag and Natural Resources Category. Her presentation was in entitled, “Curiosity Killed the Cow.” Morgan talked about the encounter her family had with rabies after one of her dairy heifers came in contact with a rabid animal. She also discussed the importance of getting show animals vaccinated for rabies and how spending the money on the shot was a lot cheaper that spending the $1,000-10,000 on post rabies exposure treatments.
Conner McKinzie, our youngest qualifying competitor, competed in the Public Speaking Division. Conner’s speech topic was leaving flavored milk as a drink option in schools and that in comparison to sodas, it is a much healthier option. Twenty-two 4-Hers from across the state competed in this year’s contest. The top 5 speakers from each of 2 heats advanced to the finals where the Top 10 were named. Conner was one of the Top 10, successfully completing his first year as a Senior 4-Her.
Wrapping up Erath 4-H participation in 2012 State Round-Up was the Invitational Livestock Judging Team. Two years ago, Invitational Contests were implemented into State Round-Up. These contests gave Intermediate aged (ages 11-13) 4-Hers the opportunity to compete at the State Level as well as provided Senior 4-Hers with other opportunities while attending. The contest consisted of judging classes as well as answering questions. This year’s team consisted of Kindall Manning, Kylie Manning and Will Pettit. Will was 2nd High Individual in the Beef Cattle Division.

Our 4-H FCS Committee did it again – they planned an awesome Clothing Camp for our youth! We had 15 campers
in the morning and 15 campers in the afternoon session and were blessed with lots of volunteers to help our campers make their projects.
The projects for this year included a jewelry bag, drawstring bag, towel tote, teddy bear sleeping bag, painting a canvas bag, and headbands. Our community service project this year was making one
of the teddy bear sleeping bags to give away to a child in the need through the local Rainbow Room.
Clothing Camp - Lots of Fun!
THANK YOU!!!Special thanks to Star Council (Harriet Frazier, Randi Williams, Chelsea Pendergrass, and Maggie), Judy Meador, Carolyn Hays, Doris Threadgill, and Martha Jones who helped us out every day.
And thanks also to some older 4-Hers who helped – Laurie Tolboom, Riley McKinzie, and Makenzie Lewis.

Cross Timbers Lamb & Goat CampThe First Annual Cross Timbers Lamb & Goat Camp, held in June was a huge success with 29 goat campers and 13 lamb campers in attendance. They came from about 20 different cities and towns across Texas, from the panhandle to San Antonio. A lot of learning and fun took place, despite the heat.
A BIG THANK YOU goes out to all our speakers, volunteers, and helpers. We could not have done it without you. View more photos on our Facebook Page.
