4-H Horse & Dairy Quiz Bowl
Interested in learning more about the equine and/or dairy industry? Why not try horse quiz bowl or dairy quiz bowl. Practices will start after the first of the year. Please call Jenn at the 4-H Office if you are interested in participating or volunteering to coach a team.
If you are planning on participating, here are some important dates to remember:
● The District Horse Bonanza Contest (Horse Bowl and Hippology) will be held on March 7. District Horse Communications will be held on April 23 at CCE Oneida County.
● The District Dairy Bowl Contest will be held on March 14 at South Lewis High School.
Oneida County has already set up a series of dairy bowl & livestock skill-a-thon practices if you are interested in practicing with them. It is our hope that we will have enough interest in Herkimer County to hold our own, but if not, this is a great option.
If you are interested in participating, contact Jenn by January 3 so practices can be set up or she can let Oneida County know that we will have some participants.

Horse communications and Public Presentation night will be held together as one event. Registrations for both events are due to the 4-H Office no later than February 14. We need to have the names of each 4-H member who will be doing a presentation and the title of the presentation when you call to register.
Learning to give effective public presentations is one unique advantage of belonging to 4-H. Presentations should have an obvious connection to the 4-H program. Therefore, if your members are unsure of what topic to select, encourage them to try one that deals with a 4-H project that they are already familiar with. That way they can concentrate on the actual presentation because they do not have to worry about learning new content material. This will also help to reinforce the knowledge they have already learned.
Public Presentation Categories:
● Formal Speech
● Demonstration /Illustrated Talk
● Recitations and Dramatic Interpretations
● Interview
4-H youth can get a head start on preparing for a job or college interview by participating in the New York State 4-H Public Speaking Program’s Interview Process. The oral presentation will be the actual interview using questions selected from a set list. The written presentation documents will be submitted for judging prior to the face-to-face interview.

Dairy Discovery
March 27-28
Dairy Discovery is a hands-on workshop held annually at Cornell on March 27-28. It is a statewide program for youth 14-19 years of age as of January 1 of the current year. Due to the hands-on approach of the sessions, participation is limited to the first 60 individuals to enroll by the deadline.
The theme for 2020 is Calf and Heifer Production Management. Replacement heifers are an investment in the future of a dairy. The heifer enterprise represents the second largest cost on a dairy farm second only to dairy feed. The average age at first calving for Holsteins in New York is 26 months with a body weight post calving of 1170 lbs. This extended age and low body weight increases the herd cost of production. For every month that the “Age at First Calving” is delayed beyond the 22-month target, the cost to producers is about $100 per animal, primarily because of lost milk production opportunity and a loss in the number of days in an animal’s productive life.
A quality dairy replacement system is a management system that consistently generates quality heifers. Calving practices and newborn calf care play a critical role in the management of a heifer-raising program. Technical and analytical skill development in the areas of: Calf delivery, newborn calf care, colostrum management, and monitoring growth are necessary for assessing and optimizing the heifer raising programs potential.
The cost of $50 per participant ($15 per chaperone) will cover the basic handouts, materials, dinner and activities on Friday evening, and lunch on Saturday. Lodging is NOT included for this program but a group of hotel rooms are blocked prior to this event each year. Remember it is first come, first served, so register early. Call Jenn at the 4-H office if you have any questions. For more information and to register go to http://4h.ansci.cornell.edu/events-2/dairy-discovery-2/ Don’t forget to also reserve a hotel room. Details are also on the website.
NY AG Literacy Week
March 16-20
In celebration of National Agriculture Week (March 16-20), volunteers throughout the state will read a book with an agricultural theme to second graders. The selected book for 2020 is Right This Very Minute by Lisl H. Detlefsen.
We are proud to feature a table-to-farm book about food and farming. This inside look at food will connect students to their food and inspire them to dig deeper and celebrate those who work so hard to provide us with food each day.
Over 75,000 students in almost every single county were reached last year. If you are interested in volunteering to read at a school, please contact Jenn at the 4-H office.

New York Farm Bureau New York Farm Bureau, the State’s largest agricultural lobbying organization, is very excited to partner with 4-H to provide complimentary NYFB Student Memberships for High School Juniors & Seniors who are 4-H members. NYFB recognizes that the future of the agricultural industry in New York is dependent upon engaging youth who are interested in pursuing agricultural careers. NYFB wants to provide these youth the opportunity to be involved in supporting the agricultural industry by being a NYFB Student Member. New York Farm Bureau has a Young Farmers & Ranchers Program which develops leadership skills while providing educational, social, and community service opportunities. In order to receive a complimentary student membership, 4-H members who are Juniors and Seniors will need to register for this membership on their own. Student members will receive a NYFB Membership card, a monthly copy of the NYFB newspaper “Grassroots” and information by email related to young farmer activities and the Agricultural Youth Scholarship Program. If you have questions on NYFB Student Membership and the Young Farmers & Ranchers Program, please contact: Patti Dugan, Deputy Director of Member Relations at 1-800-341-4143 or [email protected]
Donations Wanted! Do you have an extra coat or two? Maybe hats, gloves, or a warm blanket? Donate it! The Green & Growing 4-H Club is holding a drive and collecting clean, gently worn coats (of all types and sizes). They are also collecting hats, gloves, and blankets, along with toiletry items to be donated to the Herkimer County Catholic Charities youth and Domestic Violence programs. Donations will be accepted to club members or at the 4-H office until December 20. Contact Cassie for information at 518-257-2670.
Winter Weather
Herkimer County is such a wonderful place to live. We offer the following information regarding Cornell Cooperative Extension and 4-H.
1. Sometimes the weather is bad in one part of the county and not the others. Use your own judgment when deciding to travel.
2. Sometimes it’s too late to cancel a meeting when the weather turns bad. Again, use your own judgment.
3. If the Cornell Cooperative Extension office closes, evening meetings are cancelled.
4. If you decide not to travel to a meeting, please call the office ahead of time if possible.
If the Herkimer County Office Building is closed, the Cornell Cooperative Extension Office will also be closed. Cancelling and trying to reschedule meetings is very difficult, so if at all possible, meetings will be held. Again, use your own judgement and do not travel if you do not feel safe.

Officer Training
Eight Herkimer County 4-H members from the Green and Growing 4-H club recently attended the countywide 4-H Officer Training workshop held at the 4-H office. 4-H clubs have elected their officers for the 2019-20 4-H year, and this workshop provided them with the proper initial training to help ensure a successful 4-H experience.
Local 4-H members who participated were Green and Growing 4-H Club: Ahna, Gami, CoCo, and Nini Brackett, Connor and Gwendalyn McCutcheon, and Jaden and Isabella Olarte. 4-H members held a mock meeting, played role call freeze tag, and made scrapbook pages for their club Historians to use in a club scrapbook.
The 4-H members learned about the office of President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, Historian, and Song & Recreation.
The sessions better prepare the 4-H club officers to conduct more efficient meetings, training young people to understand their role in a group and operate an effective meeting according to parliamentary procedure. This is an investment in life long skill development.
Congratulations!
Congratulations to Katie Livingston on exhibiting the Grand Champion Guernsey of the youth show at World Dairy Expo in Madison Wisconsin in October.
Congratulations to Anna Hawkes on winning the 2019 Earn-a-Calf sponsored by the Central New York Farm Progress Show. Anna choose to purchase a beef steer that she will raise as a part of our 4-H Livestock Auction.

The 4-H Member & Volunteer Recognition Event was held at the Herkimer BOCES on Thursday, November 7. The event kicked off with a light dinner provided by the culinary students at BOCES, followed by a make your own sundae donated by Stewart’s of Herkimer, and finishing with the awards ceremony. There was a power point presentation of all that has been accomplished for the 2018-2019 4-H year, including 4-H club’s trips and programs in the county and state.
This year, sixteen traditional 4-H members and twenty Cloverbuds received Certificates of Year End Completion for their participation in 4-H. Twenty-seven members received an All Around 4-Her Award for their additional participation in 4-H events. There were fourteen Outstanding 4-Her Awards presented to members that fulfilled all the previous requirements including assuming a leadership role.
4-H volunteers were recognized for completing their first year, fifth year, and tenth year with pins. Volunteers were also recognized for their support of 4-H. Volunteers are a huge part of what keeps 4-H going in Herkimer County. Donated time and continued dedication is greatly appreciated.

Herkimer County 4-H members observed National 4-H Week this year by showcasing the incredible experiences that 4-H offers young people, and highlighting the remarkable 4-H youth in our community who work each day to make a positive impact on those around them.
All Seasons, Green and Growing, Kuyahoora Kaprines, and Occupational Hazards 4-H clubs each participated this year and received a $5 award from Herkimer County 4-H. The All Season’s 4-H club made a display for the Van Hornesville Milk Producers Coop. The Green and Growing 4-H club made a poster that was on display at the Fort Plain elementary school with projects that were made in 4-H. 4-H members and leaders also wore their 4-H shirts to school and work to promote 4-H. The Kuyahoora Kaprines 4-H club had a display at the Teel Farms in Barneveld, NY, where they also had their goats and interacted with the public to educate about their project animals and 4-H. The Occupational Hazards 4-H club made a display at the Herkimer BOCES to showcase the in-school club.
The theme of this year’s National 4-H Week was Inspire Kids to Do, which highlights how 4-H encourages kids to take part in hands-on learning experiences in areas such as health, science, agriculture and civic engagement. The positive environment provided by 4-H mentors ensures that kids in every state in the country ̶ from urban neighborhoods to suburban schoolyards to rural farming communities ̶ are encouraged to take on proactive leadership roles and are empowered with the skills to lead in life and career.
