July 2018 Clover Connection Dear Friends,

Summer events are in full swing and the county fair

is fast approaching. It is the member’s responsibility

to read the fair book and know the rules and regula-

tions. Rules are important for consistency & trust.

The integratory of our county program and the 4-H

program as a whole is at risk when rules are broken.

We want everyone to have a positive learning expe-

rience. Rules are designed to treat everyone fairly.

Somethings are out of our control and others we can

mandate.

The focus of the fair experience should be the learn-

ing and growth of each 4-H and FFA member. The

knowledge and skills gained are far more important

than the results of a competitive event, animal or

project exhibited. Youth are all winners because of

the new knowledge and skills

they have gained!

Have a safe & fun summer!

ARE YOU READY FOR THE FAIR?

Monday, July 23 at 7 pm at the Extension Office.

Anxious about what happens at fair time? What will the

judge ask? What is a goal sheet? Extension staff will

share information and helpful hints to prepare 4-H

members for the county fair. This workshop is great for

first time 4-H’ers, but everyone is welcome to learn new

things! Tammy’s fair exhibit advise: “Don’t wait until the last

week before fair to work on your exhibits and goal

sheets. Remember to take pictures for your write

ups. A few pictures will help tell your story.” Fair Entries are due July 2!

Advanced Cattle Feeder Class Winners

On June 11th 16 4-H & FFA members participated in the

2018 Advanced Feeder Class project in Edgewood. Participating this year were Mindy Keehner, Cora Keehner, Keegan Echard, Ty Echard, Nate SHirbroun, Tate Berns, Kaden Schoenfeldt, Regan Stelken, Molly KAnn, Lauren Cherne, Lane Orr, Ben Gibson, Andrey Shirbroun, Truman Cherne, Laci Orr and Jordan Wegmann.

The junior division winner was Mindy Keehner of Monona, Tate Berns of St. Olaf was the intermediate division winner and Andrey Shirbroun of Farmersburg was named the senior division winner.

There were 3 divisions in the carcass competition. Win-ner of the market beef pen was Ben Gibson of Elgin. Lane Orr of Elkader won the market beef individual class. The dairy steer market pen was won by Jordan Wegmann, Edgewood

Many exhibitors in the 4-H & FFA market beef show see only the show ring aspect of beef production, not the real-world aspects of feeding cattle for today’s market-place. The Advanced Cattle Feeder Class focuses more on the real-world aspects of feeding to a target market, focusing on the cost of production, and meat quality.
