Spring is in the air! Flowers are blooming, baby lambs are being born, and the sun is shining! The sun is also shining in
the 4-H world. With fair right around the corner, there are a lot of things going on that you won’t want to miss out on. Be
sure to read the whole Newsletter to stay up to date on all the latest happenings within the Allamakee County 4-H Pro-
gram. We are offering you many opportunities to participate in events such as; poultry and beef workshops, new mem-

books off the club shelves. New families to 4-H will be receiving a blue binder with the fair book inside. Your
fair book was designed to be “renewable”— updates are sent to 4-H families each year instead of printing
entire copies of the book. Please replace the pages in your binder with the pages in the packet. Additional
copies of the fair book may be purchased for $5.00 at the Extension Office. You may also view it at

4-H members and their parents can cheer the Waterloo Black Hawks Hockey Team
on Saturday, April 2 vs. Sioux Falls at 7:05 p.m. or Friday, April 8 vs. Cedar Rapids
at 7:05 p.m. at Young Arena. Tickets are $7 each for 4-H members and parents.
Deadline for advance tickets is March 31 for the April 2 game, and April 7 for the April

4-H CAMP TO BE HELD AT PINE BLUFF IN JUNE
Dive to New Depths: Region 4 Junior 4-H Camps at Pine Bluff will be June 8-9 and June 13-14 for 4-H members currently in 4, 5 and 6 grades. Pine Bluff 4-H Camp is 115 acres of pine-covered bluffs, beautiful trails, and Upper Iowa River near Decorah. Campers will join old and new 4-H friends in 2 days and 1 night of hiking, exploration, crafts, tubing, campfire songs, games and more! Youth may even leave camp with a 4-H fair exhibit completed. Cost is $65 per camper.
Reach for the Stars: The possibilities are endless as you reach for the stars at Intermediate 4-H camp on
June 15-16. Join 4-H members currently in 7 and 8 grades for 2 days and 1 night of hiking, exploration,
crafts, tubing, star glazing, campfire songs, games and a field trip to Niagara Cave near Harmony, MN where
you see natural canyon-like passageways sculpted by water from an underground stream and view an under-
ground waterfall. Come join the fun! Registration fee is $80.00 per camper. Deadline is April 15. Regis-
tration forms can be found on Page 12
4-H STATE YOUTH CONFERENCE
Iowa 4-H Youth Conference: Dive to New Depths — June 28-June 30, 2016
Every June, almost 1000 teenagers converge on the campus of Iowa State University for 3 days full of speak-
ers, workshops, mixers, dances, a banquet, and community service activities. If you've completed 8 grade,
you're eligible to attend. You will get to experience campus life, and meet new people from across the
state! You will be having fun while learning by doing, dancing the nights away, and serving the communi-
ty. You will get to learn new things to take back to your community and school, and in the process you might
even discover something new about yourself! If you have a specific interest in animal science, you might want
to look into becoming part of the ROUND-UP track! Iowa 4-H Youth Conference 2016 Registration is

4-H CAMP COUNSELORS NEEDED
Attention High School students: Do you enjoy working with younger 4-H member to create a positive experi-
ence in an outdoor setting? Do you enjoy tubing, hiking, campfires, and canoeing? Then being a 4-H camp
counselor may be for you. Region 4 is looking for youth counselors to help lead 4-H camps at Pine Bluff. All
camps are two days and one night. The camp dates can be found above. Sign up for one or more camps.

We have an exciting opportunity to share with you! The 4117 Auxiliary would like you to take pride in our
country and is offering awards to projects exhibited at the fair around the theme of ‘Honor Our Veterans.’ Pro-
jects will get judged while being on display after conference judging. 1st Place receives $30, 2nd $20 and 3rd
$10. Awards will be presented at the Youth Showcase on Tuesday evening of fair
The Allamakee County Cattlemen are sponsoring a scholarship for students attending a school in Allamakee
County or a resident of Allamakee County. All applicants must be a current member of the FFA or 4-H or
their parents members of the Allamakee Cattlemen’s Association. For graduating high school seniors on-

Saturday, April 9, 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. at Postville High School Age Divisions: Grades 5-6, 7-8, 9-12 Modeled after the competition at the Iowa State Fair, this fun event is coming to northeast Iowa! Teams of 3 will complete in three challenges. 1. Culinary: Work together to prepare a recipe in the designated time and be critiqued by a panel of judges. 2. Communications: Present a group speech on topic that you are given. 3. Additional: Identify or solve a challenge related to food, nutrition, or wellness. Gather your friends and create a team! The race is going to be on Saturday, April 30 registration will begin at 8:00 a.m. and race begins at 9:00 a.m. Pre-Registration Fee (through April 16): $25 for 14 years and older, $15 for 5-13 years old, Free for 4 years and under. We will be accepting canned goods; every can is a dollar off of registration fee, maximum of 5 cans. Late registration fee will be an additional $5 (shirts are not guaranteed). Fair Board is looking for a part-time marketing intern! Job duties would include updating the fair website, creat-
ing a social media presence and assisting with other marketing and fair projects. They ask applicants to have

welcome to join! Join us Tuesday, April 5th at 6 PM at the Extension Office for a night of fun & friends, voice
& choice. Please bring questions about 4-H you may have, and get excited to learn more about how to pre-

Families from school districts throughout Northeast Iowa will be making their way to Calmar on Thursday,
April 7. This free event, will take place at the Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) Wilder Business
Center from 4:00 p.m. -7:00 p.m. Over 30 activities and organizations will be at this hands-on science, tech-
nology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) festival created especially for 3rd-8th grade students and their
families. Attendees can view the night sky from a star lab, fly a flight simulator, conduct amazing science ex-
periments, and much more!

FAIR IMPROVEMENT CLUB CHALLENGE
The Fair Board has identified the project for Fair Improvement Project. The Fair Board is looking for club do-
nations to go towards updated the wash rack. The fundraising goal for this year is $2,300. This can be met if
each club gave at least $200. If your club would like to donate, please drop off a check to the Extension Of-
fice by April 30. Make checks payable to the Allamakee County Extension Office.
Each year the State 4-H Council sponsors the Iowa 4-H’ers for 4-H Campaign, which raises money to fund
projects that benefit 4-H members throughout the state. Their goal has been placed at $31,000! They are
asking each 4-H club in Iowa to donate a mini-mum of $3.00 per member to the campaign. All clubs that
meet the $3.00 per member goal will receive a special campaign certificate. Donation forms have been put on
club shelves.
4-H’ERS FOR 4-H CAMPAIGN
MARCH 4-H HIGHLIGHTS
Dog Project workouts will kick off on Monday, April 11 at 5:30 PM. The start of the year letters and placement
schedules will be mailed out soon, please keep an eye out for these. If you are interested in the Dog Project
and were unable to attend the Kick-Off Meeting please contact Morgan ASAP. Please be sure you have your
waiver, fees paid, ID on 4HOnline, and vet papers to the Extension Office prior to the first class. Please stop
in the office if you need to pick up any forms. Attention Clover Kids — If you are interested in participating
in a new addition to the Dog Project please contact Morgan to get your name on the mailing list. When there
is more information for you we will be mailing out letters.
DOG PROJECT
All 4-H/FFA members exhibiting sheep and meat goats at the Allamakee County Fair should plan to attend
the Sheep & Meat Goat Weigh-In on Saturday, May 7 from 10:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. at the fairgrounds. If you
are planning on exhibiting at the State Fair, you will need to attend a regional site for retinal imaging. Contact
the Extension Office for dates, locations, and rules.

4-H/FFA SHEEP MEAT GOAT WEIGH IN
COUNTY FAIR SWINE IDENTIFICATION There are two ways that 4-H & FFA members can identify hogs for the Swine Show at the Allamakee County
Fair. The Swine Weigh-In will be held on Saturday, April 2 at the fairgrounds from 10:00 a.m.-11:30 a.m.
Members need to attend the weigh-in if they want to participate in the Rate of Gain Contest or Derby Class.
4-H youth will need to go into 4-H Online and verify their swine weigh-in information. OR members can self-
tag swine by picking up tags and a tagger from the Extension Office between April 15-May 15. All swine ID
forms must be completed. If ear notched please note that on ID sheet, and returned to the Extension Office
with a picture of each tag in the hog’s ear by May 15. Digital photos are acceptable by email to
[email protected]. Members who self-tag pigs are not eligible for Rate-of-Gain or Derby class. If you are
interested in showing Swine at the 2016 Iowa State Fair please contact Morgan.
LIVESTOCK ID’s—DUE MAY 15 Livestock identification will be done through 4-H Online (www.iowa.4honline.com) for Breeding beef, Horses,
Dairy, Dairy Goats, Dogs, and Breeding Sheep. Identification is due in by Sunday, May 15, 2016. To enter
non-weigh in species, you will need to log into your 4-H online family record, and add the needed information
to the Animal ID for each member’s record. Weigh-In animals will be entered into 4-H online by county exten-
sion staff after the weigh-in. It will be the responsibility of the member to log into 4-H Online to verify that all
information is correct. Information that is not verified by the member within the verification time frame will be
locked and will not be able to be changed after that date. If you have questions about this process feel free to
contact the Allamakee County Extension Office. Each 4-H member is responsible for entering their own ID’s.
Directions and help sheets are at www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/enrollment/help.htm. Reminder: Dairy, Dairy
Goats, Breeding Meat Goats, Horses and Dogs that were ID’d last year, may be re-entered with the click of a
button! Please see page 11 for more ‘how to’ information.
FSQA TRAINING All 4-H members wanting to exhibit any beef, dairy, sheep, swine, goat, poultry, or rabbits MUST be FSQA
certified to be eligible to show at the 2016 Allamakee County Fair and/or the Iowa State Fair. FSQA Training
will be held Wednesday, April 27, at 1:00 p.m. or Saturday, May 14, 9:00 a.m. both at the Allamakee Coun-
ty Extension Office. Please call to RSVP. Junior members (Grades 4-6) must attend training every year. Inter-
mediate & Senior members (Grades 7-12) have the option to test for certification at their age level. Tests can
be taken at the Extension Office any time between 8:00 a.m.- 4:30 p.m., Monday-Friday. You need to receive
70% to pass. You may take up to 3 tests in one day.
SWINE WORKSHOP
Swine Workshop is being held Monday, April 11 at 6:30 pm at Creamery Pizza & Ice Cream, in Rushford, Minnesota.
The Houston County 4-H Swine PDC is hosting a workshop put on by Kaylee Keppy. Kaylee judges swine shows across
the US. The workshop will highlight Selecting, Fitting, Showmanship, Raising Swine and Feeding Swine. Pizza will be
provided and youth will have the opportunity to win door prizes! Please sign up by Friday, April 8th by calling the Hou-

BEEF PROJECT WORKSHOP
The Beef Project Workshop Planning Committee has been working hard to provide a hands-on educational
opportunity for youth interested in the beef project. Please mark your calendars for Sunday, June 5 for a
Beef Project Workshop at the Allamakee County Fairgrounds. Please watch for more information to follow in
the April Newsletter.
The Market Derby Poultry class is back! Class is limited to chickens only. To be eligible, birds must have
been ordered through the Allamakee County Extension Office. Each exhibitor will be allowed to enter one
pen of two derby poultry. A pen of two consists of two birds of either sex. Poultry orders must be placed and
paid for at the Extension Office by April 11. Chicks will be identified with numbered wing bands indicating
they are part of the derby project. Distribution of chicks will be done prior to delivery of chicks. All chicks will
be Jumbo Cornish-Rock. Entry forms will be mailed to youth enrolled in the poultry project the first part of
March.
4-H/FFA RABBIT WORKSHOP
The Northeast Iowa 4-H/FFA Rabbit Workshop will be Sunday, April 3 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at Strawberry
Point Civic Center in Strawberry Point. Workshop will include hands on sessions on Feeding your rabbit, Parts
of a rabbit, Grooming your rabbit, and Showmanship do’s & don’ts. Rabbits will be for sale by area breed-
ers. Rabbit breeders will discuss topics like-Preparing for the show, what judges are looking for, health and
care of rabbits, and tattooing. Coats Farm Rabbitry & Equipment will hold a “make your own rabbit carrier”
session. Those members wanting to participate in the carrier session will need to call Bobbi Coats 515-450-
9067 to reserve their supplies before March 30, 2016. Sizes for carriers are as follows: Single (8 x 16) Double
(16 x 20) Triple(12 x 24)–small breeds Triple (16 x 24)–large breeds. If you get the voicemail, please leave
name and phone number as well as Strawberry Point Workshop. Coats’ do many workshops, this will entail
that your supplies make it to the correct workshop. Questions on the workshop, or if you would like a booth to

need those instructions and links resent to you or need to use a laptop/internet connection please let Morgan
know ASAP.
Join Morgan for a series of educational, inspiring, and energizing meetings around important topics. Muffins with Morgan is designed for all 4-H leaders with all levels of experience to gain knowledge, network and work towards making the best better! These meetings are not required, feel free to attend one or attend all! If you are unable to attend but would still like to receive the information provided, please contact Morgan.

Enrollments: Please continue to help assist and encourage all club members to get re-enrolled in 4HOnline.
4-H Medical Information/Release Forms: Copies will be available on your club shelves in February. Please remember to add these forms to your tote. The tote should travel with your club to meetings, outings, and events. The goal is to be prepared in case of an emergency.
Reporter’s Report: Available on your club shelf monthly, also available online. We would like to see more club minutes added to the Clover Corner newspaper column each month. Leaders please assist your report-ers with this duty. Completed Reporter’s Report forms can be dropped off at the Extension Office. Staff will submit your club’s report to the newspaper.
Don’t forget to drop off your Club Officer Roster and Compliance Report to the Extension Office.
Apparel will be ready for pick-up mid-April. We will notify club leaders when they are ready to be picked up. Members should make checks payable to your 4-H club and payments should be collected within the club. (Similar to Fruit and Butter Braid orders). Invoices will be sent out to clubs when the shirts are ready to be picked up. Please let me know if you have any questions.

NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEK
National Volunteer Week, April 10-16, is a time to celebrate people doing extraordinary things through ser-
vice. We will celebrate all our great 4-H leader volunteers at our Spring Leaders Meeting. Established in
1974, National Volunteer Week focuses national attention on the impact and power of volunteerism and ser-
vice as an integral aspect of our civic leadership. Club members, we encourage you to send a special note to
your club leader letting them know how much you appreciate them. As we all know if it weren’t for the volun-
teers 4-H in Allamakee County would not be what it is today!
Farm Bureau Financial Services is offering a unique insurance policy for 4-H/FFA member to recover costs due to the death of livestock. The policy is tailored to short-term livestock ownership. Under the policy, each animal is insured for its cost or value in the event of an unexpected death. For more information or for appli-cation and brochure, please stop by the Extension Office.

Two CYLA retreats will convene to serve youth in grades 8 -11. The African Descendants, Immigrants & Refugee pro-gram, will be held April 15 – 17. The second retreat, Maize, will be held April 22 – 24. Maize will engage Latino/Native American natives. Both Maize and the African Descendants, Immigrants & Refugee program will be themed around the priority topic area of healthy living, supported by other 4-H Priorities including STEM, Citizenship/Leadership, and Com-munications and the Arts. Each retreat will focus on activities and programs designed to engage youth interest, support an expression of cultural self-determination within education, and provide a foundation to starting multi-cultural 4-H clubs in their own counties. FEELING CREATIVE? ART CHALLENGE 2016
We are looking for your creativity to flow! We are looking for your artwork and photos to be exhibited at the 2016 Allamakee County Fair, then for us to have on display in our new office for the 2016-17 4-H year. We are looking for art pieces and photos containing the official 4-H clover that can be hung. Qualifications for se-lections include; being selected for State Fair, Alternate State Fair or Honorable Mention. sheet will be available at the weigh ins, or contact the Extension Office for help.
ENTER LIVESTOCK ID’s ONILINE IS EASY! HERE’S HOW: Log in to 4-H Online iowa.4honline.com. Enter family email address and password. This will take you to the Member
List which includes all of your family members enrolled in 4H: members, leaders, volunteers.
Click “Edit” to the right of the member listed. You will then be sent to that member’s Personal Information Screen
Locate and click on the Animals/Livestock link in the upper left.
This will take you to the corresponding entry screen for your animal as depicted below and on the follow-
ing page. Note that in some selections will activate extra entry fields [Example: selecting Registered will
in some cases show a Breed drop down box.]
Enter the information requested and click the save button.
All animal ID’s must be submitted no later than May 15, 11:59 p.m.

**If you identified any dairy cattle, dairy goats, horses, breeding meat
goats or dogs last year, those animals will be listed at the bottom
of the animal list screen and can be reactivated.**

You may also upload photos of your dairy cattle and dogs.
You will then see a drop down box and any previously entered animals listed in a manner similar to the
picture. Select the animal you want to enter and click the add button (hidden in photo by drop down).
Note: Youth will not be able to enter Market weigh-in
animals (beef, sheep, & swine). Please refer to the
Livestock Verification Help Sheet for more infor-
mation on this process.
