interests. 4-H members are encouraged to learn

independence and generosity while working

toward their goals. They are provided safe

environments in which to work, positive role

models to look up to and numerous leadership

opportunities. Kentucky 4-H helps guide youth in

life skills they find interesting and is a rewarding

experience for those involved.

Research has proven that participation in

4-H has a significant positive impact on young

people. Recent findings from the Tufts University

4-H Study of Positive Youth Development

indicate that, when compared to their peers,

young people in 4-H are nearly four times more

likely to contribute to their communities, two

times more likely to pursue healthy behaviors and

two times more likely to engage in science,

engineering, technology and math programs

outside of school.

Spencer County Teens were asked during

the last Spencer County 4-H Teen Council

Meeting what 4-H meant to them. Here are some

of the responses:

“I’ve met a lot of my friends through 4-H and

now we’re a family” – Megan

“The people of 4-H are my family, I know I’ll

always be welcomed home” – Jena

“4-H isn’t just an organization or club, it’s a

lifestyle” – Liz

“Family” – Ben

“Community, 4-H is youth, 1 Timothy 4:12” -

TOP 12 WEEK For seven days, July 15th – July 22nd, a

group of young people traveled throughout the

state of Kentucky and Indiana working toward

moving onto the traveling eight this fall. Counties

represented were Boone, Caldwell, Campbell,

Harrison, Logan, Spencer, Taylor and Woodford.

Englewood Limousine, Lim-flex and Red Angus

(which will be dispersing this fall) hosted this

group plus three other county groups on the first

day.

The University of Kentucky sheep unit

hosted day two. Mattingly club lambs and

Kedrick Miller show goats provided excellent

training opportunities on day three. Purdue

University allowed us access to their replacement

heifers and ewes on Tuesday.

On Wednesday the National Swine

Registry provided an opportunity to learn about

foreign trade and scholarships through their

organization. Hortzman Cattle Company and the

Patton family also allowed us to view their sale

and show cattle on that day.

We concluded on Thursday with several

swine classes at JJG genetics. At the end of the

week eight individuals were selected to travel in

the fall. This group would like to thank everyone

who helped through donations, providing classes

or just moral support.

Pictured is the group of youth that were included

in Top 12 Week, including Spencer Counties very

own Logan Light and Courtney Jeffiers.

Congratulations to both of these outstanding

young people.

2016 Kentucky State Fair

CLOVERVILLE Congratulations to everyone who had an entry

into Cloverville and especially to our class winners!

Halloween Safety Halloween is one of the anticipated

holidays of the year for many people, but if a

child suffers from food allergies, it can be

downright frightful for them and their parents.

You can support children with food allergies and

other medical conditions by participating in the

Teal Pumpkin Project.

The project encourages individuals to help

raise awareness about food allergies and support

those who suffer from them. To participate you

can paint a pumpkin teal, the color of food allergy

awareness, and place it outside. If you don’t have

time to do so, you can print a free sign from the

Teal Pumpkin Project website and post it on your

house to let trick or treaters know you offer

nonedible treats rather than only candy. It is

available at http://www.foodallergy.org/teal-

pumpkin-project/download#.V-vZZsksC98.

Food allergies are a growing problem in

the United States with one in 13 children having

one. Some of the most common allergens like

nuts, milk, eggs, soy or wheat are also items

commonly found in candy. In addition to food

allergies, children with other medical conditions,

like celiac disease, may not be able to safely eat

some candies.

Some candies, particularly miniature or

fun-size versions, do not always list their

ingredients on the individual packages and could

contain different ingredients than larger versions.

This makes it difficult for parents to determine

which candies are safe for their child.

Finding cheap, nonedible treats is easier than you

think. Here are some ideas.

*Glow sticks

*Bubbles

*Spider rings

*Vampire fangs

*Stickers

*Halloween erasers

Extension Service.
