Showcase Your Talent at 4-H Talent Show

Why not showcase your talent at our annual talent show? The 4-H Talent Show is scheduled for Sunday, March 24 at 2:00 pm at Silver Lake College's Franciscan Center for Music Education and Performance. Individual and group performances in dance, vocal, drama, instrumental, and any other talent you have are all welcome. You can even invite friends and/or family members, who are not 4-H members, to perform with you!

Talent Show judging is based on the following criteria: Stage Presence / Blocking 10 Costumes / Appearance 10 Use of Facial Expression & Body Gestures 15 Originality 10 Execution of Script / Memorization 15 Voice & Projection 15 Confidence 10 Overall Performance 15 Total Points 100 Talent Show entries are due by March 15. Order Your Pinewood Derby Car Now!

Manitowoc County 4-H will be holding their 9th annual Pinewood Derby competition on Tuesday, April 9 from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m., at the Manitowoc County Expo Ice Center. What is a Pinewood Derby? Youth take a block of wood (7" long by 1¾” wide by 1” high) and they cut, carve, whittle, and sand it into the shape of a vehicle. They then add two axles and four wheels and race it down a 42 foot aluminum track. There is no motor to power the car, the track is elevated at one end and gravity pulls the car down the track. The car’s speed is really dependent on two factors – air resistance and friction. The Pinewood Derby fits well within the 4-H program and it is a great way to engage youth of all ages in a project that involves science, technology, engineering, and math, as well as creative design. At the event, trophies will be awarded to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishers for each age division and trophies will be awarded for the best finished cars (Best of Show) and the slowest cars (Best Fuel Economy). Age divisions for the Pinewood Derby are: Cloverbud (Grades K-2), Elementary (Grades 3-5), Intermediate (Grades 6-8), Senior (Grades 9 – 12), and Adult (must be related to a 4-H member). Car kits must be purchased through the 4-H program, and they are $5.00 each. Payment for the cars will be collected at your 4-H club meeting and cars can be picked up directly at the Extension, Manitowoc County office or they will be distributed through your club. Pinewood Derby Car Building Workshop – Tuesday, March 19

We will again be hosting a Pinewood Derby car building workshop on Tuesday, March 19 from 5:00 – 7:00 pm at the Manitowoc County Office Complex in Room 111 for youth who need help with their car. Youth can come anytime between 5:00 and 7:00 pm and get help roughing out the shape of the car, however, they will need to take their car home to do final sanding, painting, and assembly.

Aerodynamics, friction, gravity, potential and kinetic energy...what are the secrets to building a fast

Pinewood Derby car?

Take advantage of a "Science by Inquiry" program to learn how to make your pinewood derby car fast –

or faster! Arrive at the Manitowoc County Office Complex, 4319 Expo Drive, any time between 9-11 AM

and plan to stay about 1-2 hours. The program will end by 12:00 PM.

You'll have the opportunity to race your car on the derby track while making improvements to it. There

will be stations where you can use trial and error to find the best placement for additional weight,

reduce the friction on axles and wheels, and experiment with lubricants. We'll have some basic tools,

drills, scales, etc. available for you to perfect your wheels, axles, and weight (you will need to provide

your own weights).

If you don’t have your Pinewood Derby car finished just yet, no worry. We will have some basic cars

available for you to experiment with! Come out and have some fun and get ready for the Pinewood

Derby!

Please note, if you were unable to attend the Pinewood Derby Car Building Workshop on March 19, we

will also have the tools available on Saturday, March 30 for you to rough out the shape of your car. You

will need to take it home to do the final sanding, painting, and assembly.

University of Wisconsin-Madison Saddle and Sirloin Club Project Awards The University of Wisconsin-Madison Saddle & Sirloin Club is announcing the annual Saddle and Sirloin Club Swine Project Awards. Up to five awards of $100 each will be awarded to first or second year swine project members. The Swine Project Awards were introduced to help beginning 4-H or FFA members get started in the swine industry. To be eligible, an applicant must be a first or second year swine project member, 9-18 years old, and a Wisconsin resident. The completed application is due postmarked on or before April 19th, 2019. Applications must be submitted by mail; no applications submitted via email will be accepted. See attached brochures for more information

4-H Dairy Judging 4-H Dairy Judging Kick off meeting will be held on March 11th, at 7:00pm in room 300 at the M.C.OC. We will be talking about the upcoming season and judging the Hoard’s judging contest. Any 4-H members enrolled in the Dairy Project are welcome to join this meeting. Ambassador Meeting Rescheduled The Ambassadors is rescheduled to Sunday, March 3rd at 3:00pm at 20001 US 151, Valders, WI.

2019 Inbound Programs & 2019 Japan Hosting Open your home to an exchange student and open your lives to the world! WI 4-H International Programs provides opportunities for 4-H families and students to host exchange students, and to travel abroad themselves. Each summer, we welcome around 60 international youth delegates who travel to WI to live with a host family and experience every-day life and culture for 4 weeks. This summer, we will be hosting youth delegates from Japan, South Korea, Mexico, Costa Rica, and Norway. In Case You Missed It!

Grow a Row Gardening Project If you have a garden, please consider planting an extra row for donation to a local food pantry or to the First Presbyterian Community Meal. If you don’t have a garden but would be willing to tend one, Grow it Forward, LLC has community garden space on South 14th Street near Monroe Elementary available to anyone willing to grow food for donation to First Presbyterian Community Meals or Peter’s Pantry or another donation site. There is additional garden space on Viebahn Street as well. Amber Daugs is CEO of Grow it Forward, so if you are interested, please contact her at amberdaugs@gmail.com Some pantries have refrigerator space; some don’t. Some are able to take fresh food, and some cannot. If you need help finding a food pantry to accept your donations, please ask Laura Apfelbeck at laura.apfelbeck@ces.uwex.edu . If you’d like to participate, your work could become a part of a state-wide initiative to connect gardeners with individuals on limited incomes, facilitating food rescue and food donation efforts. To be part of the state-wide project, growers would work with Laura Apfelbeck of FoodWIse to document and describe the number of sites and settings where produce was donated, estimate of number of people served by donated produce, as well as measure the total pounds of food donated. Of course you could also enter some of your produce in the Manitowoc County Fair or create a scrapbook documenting your efforts! Contact Laura if you are interested.

Ideas: Create a salsa garden with tomatoes, peppers, onions, garlic, cilantro—You could even make & serve your salsa at the Community Meal Plant a pickle garden—cucumbers, dill, garlic, and onions. Maybe even different varieties? Grow an herb garden with dill, basil, cilantro, parsley, sage, chives. Offer recipes to show how to improve food flavor with fresh herbs. Design an Autumn Stew garden with root vegetables: beets, carrots, onions, rutabagas, turnips and potatoes. Perhaps a smoothie garden? Raspberries, strawberries, spinach, kale, carrots, and mint all grow well in Wisconsin.

Food Pantries need your help! We all know that herbs & spices can be used to replace salt and make food tastier, but most food pantries receive few if any herbs and spices. Some don’t even have onions & celery. Food is mighty bland without spices but spices can be expensive. Imagine spaghetti with no garlic or oregano. Chili without chili powder. Sometimes families resort to boxed meals—which are often very high in sodium and fat--because they simply don’t have those extra ingredients.

Spice it Up Food Drive, to the rescue! Would your 4-H family or club be willing to collect spices to donate? Please consider hosting a Spice it Up Food Drive. You might buy spices in bulk and package it yourself. Or you could buy spices from the dollar store. Interested? UW-Extension FoodWIse is working with area food pantries to improve heart health and support people with diabetes. Spices truly make an enormous difference in the flavor and appeal of healthy foods. The Wisconsin 4‐H Foundation will award more than $10,000 in scholarships to outstanding Wisconsin students pursuing higher education in 2019. To be considered for financial support, applications must be received by the Wisconsin 4‐H Foundation via email by Friday, March 15, 2019, 5:00 pm. Wisconsin 4‐H Foundation scholarships are awarded to students based on demonstrated personal growth, development and leadership, academic performance and future educational goals. To be eligible for Wisconsin 4‐H Foundation scholarships, students must have been a Wisconsin 4‐H member for at least one year; have a grade point average of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale, and be enrolled or planning to enroll at a University, College or Technical School during the 2019‐2020 academic school year. Manitowoc Fairest of the Fair Applications are now being accepted for the 2019 Manitowoc County Fairest of the Fair. The selected candidate’s will become the Official Ambassador of Manitowoc County Fair. Other duties will include attending community events, speaking with adult and youth organizations, and making public appearances throughout Manitowoc County to promote the fair. You will also receive a $1,500 Fairest of the Fair Scholarship! Applications are due March 1, 2019 Competition date is March 30, at the UW Green Bay/ Manitowoc Campus, Manitowoc Be a resident of Manitowoc County for one year, a resident of an adjoining county for one year if majority of fair and/or school activities are held in Manitowoc County. Be at least 18 years of age as of January 1, 2020. Possess a valid WI Driver’s License. Reside in WI during the entire term. We’re getting started on a new Plat Book to be ready by September of 2019! The Plat Book is a major fundraiser for the Manitowoc County 4-H Leaders Association. We need volunteers that can help with sales, marketing, design, and proofing of the new book. Got Literature?

4-H Project literature is available for almost every project in 4-H and it is funded by your enrollment fee. If you would like some help with your project, 4-H literature can provide project information, ideas, and direction. To obtain literature for your project, go into your account in 4-H Online and select

Participation and then the Project tab. You can then go to Edit for the project you want literature for and select your project material. The literature order for your club will be given to your Main Leader who will bring it to the next club meeting. When you are done with the literature at the end of the year, please return it to your Main Leader, who will bring it to our office and it can be reissued to another 4-H member. Recycling literature helps us keep the program costs down.

Each animal will be a USTSA registered animal, and at least QR in Scrapie Codon 171 genotype.

The winner will also receive a $150 credit for use toward purchase of additional animals at the

2019 national sale.

sheep may apply. Applicants should possess a keen interest in the U.S. sheep industry,

commitment to raising Targhee sheep over time, and a firm belief in the abilities of the breed.

Applicants must demonstrate proof of care, facilities, and transportation. Aside from receiving

the flock of sheep, the winning youth, will be paired with a Targhee breeder living near them

who will act as a mentor. The association is committed to helping the winner succeed.

Targhee sheep are one of the few breeds developed in the United States at the U.S.

Sheep Experiment Station in Dubois, Idaho. Withstanding harsh environments and minimal

human intervention, while still producing high quality lamb and wool are hallmark traits of

Targhees. Mothering ability and gentle dispositions are additional positive traits of the breed.

The U.S. Targhee Sheep Association believes in the future. The success the program has

had thus far has only affirmed it is the right thing to do for young people. Please pass the word
