Diamond Clover Project Completion Seth Donnelley recently completed his Diamond Clover level 6 project which was “Signs for Trees and Shrubs at the Plumpton Park Zoo”. He developed and installed educational signs to identify various trees and shrubs planted around the Zoological Gardens in Rising Sun. Over the course of a year, a total of 34 distinct tree and shrub varieties were photographed, and identification signs were produced for them. These signs contain the common and scientific names of the plant, information on how to identify it, the plant’s distribution in the United States (or global region of origin for non-native species), and a few interesting facts about the plant that may be of interest to the general public, especially with regards to human usage of the plant or its products. Way to go Seth!

4-H Best Dressed Table Contest Saturday, November 2, 2019

Calvert Grange, Calvert Set Up between 9-10:30 AM Judging begins at 10:45 AM

How It Works: Participants select a theme and display one place setting, including table covering, placemat, dinnerware, glassware, flatware, centerpieces, etc. and create a menu to complement their theme. Judges will visit with each contestant and discuss their entry and view their table and menu.

The Rules: 1. The contest is open to Cecil 4-Hers ages 8-18 as of the current year. 2. Provide one complete table setting for one to include: table covering, placemat, dinnerware, glassware, flatware, centerpieces, etc. appropriate for your menu. 3. Type or write a menu on at least a 4x6 medium (paper, chalkboard, poster board, etc.). It should be legible and easy to read and understand (Do not prepare food) 4. Participants MUST provide a card table to display your entry. 5. 4-Hers should do their set up and presentation by themselves.

Prizes will be awarded for the TOP THREE Junior, Intermediate and Senior displays. Remember this is for fun!!!

Creating Your Table Setting Did you know that you can be a designer each time you set the table? A designer chooses and arranges things according to a plan for beauty and order. A neat, interesting, clean and attractive table setting makes any meal more enjoyable. Actually, there is more than one way to set a table. The usual way to set a table is to put all the dishes, flatware, and food on the table before anyone sits down. When there is company or for a special meal, part of the food and dishes may be left in the kitchen and served later. Diners at a buffet or a picnic may fill their plates and glasses before they are seated. The way to set your table depends upon the way the meal is to be served. Select a Theme - What is the occasion...a family dinner, a holiday, or lunch with friends? Select a theme which fits the occasion. Possibilities can run from a fishing party sack lunch to a formal Mother’s Day dinner. This theme should be evident. Contestants are encouraged to dress to the theme of their table. Table Accessories - These include any item used to set a table: tablecloth, placemats, dinnerware, glassware, flatware, and centerpiece. Choose table accessories that fit the occasion and carry out the theme. Paper plates, plastic ware, and paper napkins may be used for a picnic but they would not be appropriate for a formal dinner. Flatware and dishware must be safe to eat from i.e., no glitter, glue, etc. is to be used on eating surfaces. Don’t forget the table covering. You can include a centerpiece and table decorations. Menu - Be creative – don’t forget to have a balanced meal which may include appetizers, main dish, vegetables, fruits, desserts, etc. Use the https://www.choosemyplate.gov/ as your guide for developing a healthy meal. Menu can either be sitting on table or propped up on an easel. Contestants should understand the nutrition and preparation of the menu they prepared. For ideas about creating your entry, check out the following fact sheet at: http://lancaster.unl.edu/4h/fair/documents/tableset.pdf -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
