Positive Passion

Mitch McDonald, General Manager, ALL Crane Rental of Florida, Inc.

People in the South are known for their hospitality. They have a passion for it, I guess

you’d say, and the folks at ALL Crane Rental of Florida are no exception. We are a proud

member of the ALL Family of Companies; let me tell you more about this unique family.

Our Tampa location started doing business back in 1999, and many of those same guys

are still with us today. I was brought on board as general manager in 2007, and in those

seven years, I have just been so impressed with the passion of the people in this company

— not just here in Tampa, but across all of ALL. It’s different here. I’ve never worked

anywhere that has this level of commitment to “positive passion.” It’s a reflection of the

strength of our branch and of our culture companywide, and I am frankly proud to be a

part of it.

How are we different? Here, people equal value. With the type of work we do, sometimes

our lives are literally in each other’s hands. Trust cannot be underestimated. Knowing

that the person alongside you or across the yard from you has the same commitment to

— the same passion for — safety and pride in their work that you do is invaluable. It’s

a strong, dynamic bond and has translated into many of us becoming friends socially,

because we all share this passion.

My approach to hiring is that it’s the most important decision I make. I entrust and

empower my staff to do their best work. I don’t believe in micromanaging. Work is

delegated properly down the line, and help is given whenever and wherever it is needed.

If someone makes a mistake, we take that as an opportunity to learn and grow. A

positive, can-do attitude is mandatory here — and that is borne out companywide.

At our branch, we meet at the top of every week to go over everything that will happen

in the coming days; particularly, what needs to be fixed. We address problems and flaws

and effect repairs promptly. When everyone is empowered to take care of problems,

encouraged to just get at it, problems go away quickly. Eventually, we learn how to stop

having problems in the first place, and now we’re all having a remarkable day.

Thanks to everyone who contributes to that kind of Southern hospitality.

Mitch

In April 2014, TECO (Tampa Electric) Energy, Inc. undertook a complicated construction project at their Big Bend coal-

fired power station in Tampa Bay. Routine inspection had uncovered deterioration in one of the plant’s 300-foot-long steel ducts that was inside a 500-foot-high smokestack. The aging ductwork had to be replaced with fiberglass, necessitating a scheduled 45-day shutdown.

ALL Crane Rental of Florida was called to provide lifting services for the project, ultimately providing seven cranes.

Jobs and cranes are often paired up months in advance, and every contingency and lift is planned for carefully. For the heaviest lifts that would take place at Big Bend, two 300-USt crawler cranes were selected: a brand new Manitowoc 2250 and another 2250 that was a 2007 model.

“Model year doesn’t matter for a crane that has been maintained and serviced regularly the way we do at ALL,” said Mitch McDonald, general manager of ALL Crane Rental of Florida. He explained that crane selection is “based on capacity, site limitations, fleet availability, and location of the job site, not to mention the project schedule and budget requirements. We wouldn’t have it in the fleet if it couldn’t answer the call based on all those criteria.”

In the end, the ALL Family of Companies’ top-ranked crawler fleet is an incredible mix. “We invest constantly in the latest and greatest available equipment. So our success really stems from how well we take care of the best equipment,” McDonald continued. “ALL’s reputation for service is what makes our vast inventory trusted on critical job sites across North America.”

ManaGinG tHe FLeetALL doesn’t just rent cranes; it is, in essence, a fleet management and maintenance company. ALL’s close relationships with manufacturers allows it to buy directly from the source, whether it’s new cranes or replacement parts. ALL’s service capabilities and continual investment in training maintain the value of those assets over the long haul.

The Company’s 37 full-service branches act as a supply chain with equipment migrating along a carefully planned corridor. Fleet management involves scheduling moves of cranes and other lift equipment from job

to job, between different locations, and bringing them in for service and maintenance. Routine maintenance is conducted after every job and also at specifically scheduled times when overhauls are due. It’s a complex balancing act. The fleet is 3,500 machines deep, and the differences between machines can be significant. “Consider the differences between an 8-ton industrial crane and a 1,000-ton crawler,” offered McDonald. “That’s a lot of different parts. And it requires a

ton of varied know-how and service training for our shop guys. But we’re always ready; they’re the best of the best.”

Streamlining service, efficiently managing the fleet, and maximizing equipment availability helps increase overall efficiency, which translates into profitability for ALL’s customers.

For the Big Bend job, ALL knew that the 2007 model had been regularly

maintained. They also knew it would be compared — not only operationally, but also in appearance — to the new machine, since they would run alongside one another. It was decided that the earlier-model Manitowoc would get some shop work.

“Prep work for this project started six months before the first piece was even placed on a truck,” said Mike Weaver, special projects, ALL Crane Rental of Florida.

While it didn’t go through a ground-up, complete remanufacture, everything that could have been worn over its seven years of life was extensively tested and replaced if needed, including belts, hoses, pumps, and motors. And finally, the machine got a fresh coat of paint so it would gleam just as brightly as the new crane. ALL goes the extra mile in making sure the equipment is top-of-the-line and that the fleet is second to none.

“ALL was easily able to bring this machine along so it was a great match for the new one — with our massive inventory and the right personnel in place for the tasks at our state-of-the-art facility in Tampa. Both cranes finished the 45-day shutdown on schedule with zero downtime,” said Weaver.

tHe tOUGHest JOBsOnce on site, the cranes would be involved in the demolition and removal of the old steel duct, which was worn from years of use. The cranes also handled the installation of the new fiberglass duct. Augusta Fiberglass Coating Inc. manufactured the new duct and acted as the primary contractor.

Augusta called on Southeast Construction as the erector subcontractor, who partnered with ALL for the lifts.

The heaviest lifts would involve removing the steel duct: 10 lifts, with each cutaway section weighing around 50,000 pounds. Twice as many lifts would be needed to hoist the new fiberglass pieces, each coming in at 35,000 pounds and 21 feet in diameter.

Matching the right equipment to the job at hand is also critical and requires skilled, experienced decision makers. ALL recommended the two Manitowoc 2250s to work in tandem, each equipped with 140 feet of main boom and 190-foot luffing jibs. Each

was also configured with a 30-foot MAX-ER to boost lifting capacities from 300 USt to 500 USt. The MAX-ER, with its 30-foot offset, minimized tail swing — very necessary in this tight working space. The cranes had to be positioned to pick and place at a distance, both operating at a 200-foot radius, thus reducing their maximum capacity to 75,000 pounds.

UnParaLLeLeD serVice anD MaintenanceIn addition to the two-month investment to ready the cranes for the job, ALL arranged for maintenance staff to remain on site at Big Bend during the project. “This investment in uptime and customer productivity is how we become a partner, not just a vendor,” said Norm Huddy, sales

associate at ALL Crane Rental of Florida, about the Big Bend job.

Purchasing new cranes is an enormous investment, and that investment pays off best over time if machines are used continuously — in response to demand and for as long as possible — through the combined efforts of experienced equipment scheduling and dedicated, regular service and maintenance, even on the job site.

“It was gorgeous, those two cranes working side-by-side,” said Huddy. “When they were parallel at the site, you couldn’t tell them apart. It’s a great example of how we maintain equipment once it enters our fleet.”

Keeping equipment in like-new condition means the age of the machine does not have to be a factor when scheduling and selecting equipment. The full spectrum of the fleet is available to choose from, based on availability and location.

ALL’s dedication to machine excellence directly ties to service. Huddy emphasized that “sales, service, dispatch, logistics — everyone has to work in concert” to meet pretty straightforward equipment expectations. “Basically,” concluded Huddy, “the customer expects uptime. We all have to work together to deliver.”

ALL Crane Rental of Florida is a full-service yard. They have the

experienced staff and tools necessary to offer bumper-to-bumper service on their machines, and they can draw from the entirety of the ALL Family of Companies if additional help or equipment is needed to answer a customer’s call. They have work-ready machines available with capacities from 4 tons to 550 tons, and can quickly mobilize additional equipment from sister branches in the south. They also offer forklifts, aerial work platforms, and rigging services.

From changing a tire to replacing an engine to complete rebuilding or remanufacturing, ALL offers the largest selection and the best-maintained equipment on the market.

11

About a year ago, the ALL Family of Companies unveiled a new 600-USt boom launch to streamline boom transport and attachment to the crane. The boom was designed specifically to pair with the popular, 600-USt Liebherr LTM 1500 all-terrain crane, the second-largest mobile crane in ALL’s fleet. In partnership with Nelson Inc., a tractor trailer manufacturer, on the design and build of the boom launch, a video has been posted on the Internet demonstrating this technologically advanced operation: http://tinyurl.com/oxf73z7.

The boom also works with other 600-ton or smaller ATs, and has proven to be a popular development with customers, who are saving time and money. How?

Because of road weight restrictions, cranes utilizing a boom of this size cannot be outfitted with the boom before traveling to the job site. In the past, given the split sections of the boom and counterweights, this meant that an assist crane had to accompany the boom, requiring at least two (if not more) loads to be transported. All of that changed with this hydraulic boom launch trailer which, when linked up and nested into the crane’s superstructure, lifts the single-piece

600 USt Liebherr Boom LaUnch: Video Update

boom via a specially designed saddle and slowly propels it down the length of its carrying trailer on steel rollers.

The boom launcher’s power draws from the tractor’s motor instead of requiring a separate motor, and it can be operated via hand controls on the side of the launcher or via a remote control. Using the remote is preferred, as it allows the launch’s driver to communicate with the crane operator, ensuring installation is safe and smooth. The entire operation, from alignment and nesting to boom assembly, takes about one hour, a considerable time savings for a process that typically can take an entire workday.

The convenience factor and improved design is impressive enough, but the time and transport cost savings for customers have proved well worth the investment that ALL made into the development and production of this popular, technologically advantageous boom launch.

“When you look good, you feel good.” The old saying even applies to cranes. A fresh coat of paint doesn’t just make a crane look good when it arrives on a customer’s jobsite — it’s a necessity to protect and preserve the integrity of the metal. Said Larry Freckmann, general manager of ALL Crane Rental of Georgia near Atlanta (Austell, GA), “just a little nick in the paint can set the stage for rust in less than a year.” And considering the wear and tear cranes take on a construction site, that’s a lot of nicks and dings that need to be attended to, not to mention complete paint jobs on cranes with oxidized paint or being made ready for sale.

Since ALL Georgia is a southeastern hub for the ALL enterprise, it made sense to add a major paint facility there that could serve not just Atlanta but also the ALL branches in Knoxville (TN), Phenix City and Mobile (AL), and Baton Rouge (LA). “We could run two shifts a day, six days a week with all the painting needed for our region,” agreed Freckmann and the paint and body manager at ALL Georgia, Johnny Frazier.

The new 9,000-square-foot, $1.6 million, state-of-the-art paint facility is staffed with one full-time painter and four paint and bodywork assistants.

The new facility consists of a 40-foot wash bay and two

20-foot bays: a prep booth for bodywork and sanding and a 64-foot-long drive-through Col-Met paint booth. The paint shop was constructed with all-pneumatic power, including two new 50 HP electric air compressors that run all of the functions in the bays, from sandblasting crane booms and other parts with reusable abrasive steel grit to applying primer and paint.

The “green” facility also features a state-of-the-art Clemco recovery system for the steel grit, which is collected in hoppers and run onto a belt conveyor that separates the grit from dust and paint debris. Then the grit can be recycled for up to 1,600 hours of use.

PaintinG aLOnG tHe sUPPLy cHainThe ALL Family of Companies works hard to maintain its reputation for pristine equipment in its rental and for-sale fleets, and has added other strategically located paint booths to its supply chain.

While there are no plans — or even a necessity — to add a paint shop at every yard, the company carefully considers each new location. With more than 3,500 pieces of lift equipment in the ALL fleet, many of them worth millions of dollars, it’s important to keep up with the repairs and painting, said Freckmann. “With this kind of

inventory, it’s important to be vigilant and proactive. Our GM at ALL Crane Rental of Florida, Mitch McDonald, always says it’s like an empty building with one broken window. Pretty soon, someone will throw a rock and break another window, and then another, until it becomes too expensive and overwhelming to fix them all at once.”

Paint booths are expensive to build — and also to run. Painting a boom, for example, can take gallons of primer and paint, and several days to prep, prime and do the actual painting. But, according to Frazier, “Our paint shops give us the edge when it comes to selling our used equipment. If there are two 10-year-old cranes for sale side by side, the one that’s freshly painted will not only command top dollar but will also be the best long-term value because the metal is well protected.”

“I firmly believe the expense and investment in our paint shops, combined with all the other regular equipment maintenance we do, pays forward in work-ready, prime-condition equipment that both looks good and performs perfectly,” said Freckmann. “ALL sets a high standard, and we are proud of our reputation in the industry.”

ou’ve never been to Cleveland, Ohio. Oh sure, maybe in the 80s you went to “the Flats” area next to the Cuyahoga

River. Or you had a layover at Cleveland Hopkins Airport, or went to a conference once out in Beachwood, or a wedding in Westlake. But you’ve never really been to Cleveland — not this one, not the one that has been steadily punching its massive, rust belt fist up through the ground for the past several years.

Movement. Up, sideways, out. Old, empty office buildings that once sat staid and stale are being bored out and rebuilt from the inside out, with builders almost not being able to keep up with the demand for urban residences, which are in high demand and hovering around 98 percent occupancy. Tracts of land are transformed. Wings are added on. Existing fixtures and structures undergo grand-scale improve-ments. Cleveland is buzzing with construction activity, and the name is on everyone’s lips across the country, and even the world, having

Cleveland

Undergarnered the spotlight with the next Republican National Convention. There truly is something for everyone in the newly transformed Cleveland, and the influx of young professionals, commercial business growth, and restoration in the city is astounding. You have to see it to believe it.

Northeast Ohio has a strong backbone — the core strength of the area was built on the backs of industrial laborers like steel and autoworkers generations ago. Hard times befell the city during the economic downturn of the 90s. Stories circulated widely about the high number of property foreclosures, the dwindling population. It was a tough time. But Clevelanders are hardy, with an enviable will to survive and thrive that saw them draw together and forge a determined path forward together.

As Cleveland serves as its headquarters, the ALL Family of Companies has been involved with nearly every major construction project (and dozens of mid-size and smaller projects) that are

changing Cleveland’s urban landscape literally every day. These major, complex, and sometimes very fast-paced construction jobs have challenged ALL while raising the profile of its now very recognizable cranes to the citizens of and visitors to Cleveland, serving as harbingers of the message, “The future is here.”

Cleveland’s renaissance has been marked by a number of major construction projects that have garnered national attention. The following are just a few of the construction projects that are changing the face of the city.

playhoUse sqUareCleveland’s Playhouse Square is home to the largest centralized performing arts district outside of New York, attracting more than a million visitors annually. In May, an enormous, glittering chandelier hanging over the district was installed and lit after months of design and careful planning. The $1.2-million, 8,500-pound, 20-foot-tall chandelier is made of steel/aluminum arms and hoops

and holds approximately 4,200 beautiful acrylic resin crystals. The chandelier has been officially designated by Guinness as the world record holder for the largest outdoor chandelier. This sparkling beauty was lifted into its permanent position in early May, where it gleams 24 feet above the intersection of Euclid Avenue and East 14th Street. This was a particularly delicate job because the beauty and integrity of the chandelier had to be maintained — in fact, it was stored in a warehouse until the night it was lifted into place to make sure there were no scratches to the delicate coating. For this careful pick, ALL used a 165-USt Grove GMK5165 AT. The chandelier was specifically designed and tested to withstand Cleveland’s winters, which can be marked by heavy winds, freezing of snow.

Firstenergy (Cleveland Browns) stadiUmAs part of a two-year modernization project, ALL has had more than a dozen cranes of all sizes and varieties on the shores of Lake Erie, where the Cleveland Browns’ football arena, FirstEnergy Stadium, is located. From Manitowoc 888 Series II crawler cranes to Grove and Demag all terrain cranes, to scissor lifts and articulating telescopic booms, ALL provided every crane on this complex and tight job site, where upgrades had to be completed prior to the start of the 2014 football season. Construction work included installation of a huge new digital scoreboard, installation of brand new audio equipment to improve visitors’ experience, and prepping the structure for the installation of escalators. Whether lifting out sections of pre-cast seating or filling in open corners with new seating, from end zone to end zone, ALL scored a touchdown with combined skill, service, and the necessary equipment to handle every aspect of the job.

Innerbelt brIdge demolItIonDeconstruction and demolition of Cleveland’s 55-year-old Innerbelt bridge was part of the largest single investment in the Ohio Department of Transportation’s history. This enormously complex project, with multiple work zones and dozens of cranes, heavy machinery, and operators and mechanics from ALL on site every day, occurred in numerous phases. The bridge stretched 4,223 feet over businesses, the Cuyahoga River, and light and heavy rail tracks, and the dismantling project included a high volume of heavy and critical lifting over many months. Equipment needs were high and varied, and ranged from a 225-USt Grove GMK5225 and a 265-USt Grove GMK5275 with man baskets with steelworkers cutting apart sections, to a 200-USt barge-mounted Link-Belt LS-248H II, to 500-ton all terrain cranes — a Liebherr LTM 1400-7.1 and a Demag AC1300 that lowered the huge and heavy bridge sections to the ground. There were scheduled shutdowns of the river and

rail tracks, involving a 300-USt Manitowoc 2250 S-3 lattice boom crawler and a 230-USt Manitowoc 888 S-2 crawler to help dismantle and lower pieces of girders and on-ramps. At the end of the project, a publicly attended, explosive demolition of the last remaining pieces of this landmark was safely executed in July 2014.

Flats east BankThe storied Flats section of downtown Cleveland, adjacent to the Cuyahoga River, is in the midst of a massive, multi-phased, $500-million waterfront development and restoration project. This impressive ongoing project brings a myriad of dining, retail, and entertainment venues back to this well-known district. Phase I, now complete, called on multiple machines from ALL to assist with construction and erection of a 23-floor office tower (Ernst & Young tower) with an open-air rooftop deck, a new 150-room boutique hotel (Aloft by Starwood), new restaurants, including Ken Stewart’s, Lago, and

The Wileyville, along with a 16,000-foot health club. ALL handled much of the heavy lifting work utilizing a 22-USt Potain MD 485 B M20 tower crane, well suited for work requiring high productivity and a striking symbol of progress on the skyline. Phase II, set to open in 2015, will include a 240+-unit waterfront residential complex and a 1,200-foot boardwalk, as well as popular attractions such as a piano bar, a bier market, and a club/restaurant owned by country music star Toby Keith.

mediCal mart & Convention CenterThe Cleveland Medical Mart & Convention Center, which came to be known by its proper name, the Global Center for Health Innovation, was a $465-million construction project that began with site clearing and demolition in January 2011 and was completed in August 2013. This state-of-the-art facility offers 1.1 million square feet of space for medical showrooms, an exhibition hall, and conference facilities. LEED

designed to vastly improve the visitor experience on a number of fronts and elevate what was already an impressive cultural institution to the level of extra-ordinary. Throughout the tenure of the project, ALL was on site to clear the way for progress and help erect and set pieces relevant to the new construction. Overarching project work would include restoring architecture, increasing gallery space, the addition of two wings, and the construction of a beautiful, large glass atrium. As an example of the assistance provided for the atrium, ALL lent a hand with a Grove GMK 5240, which helped construct a Haki scaffold to hold the temporary roof during installation, and assisted with erecting steelwork for skylights. A fine dining restaurant, Prove-nance, was also ensconced, special exhibition spaces were upgraded, and visitor amenities were improved upon, including creating covered parking. The work on this free museum was the largest cultural project in Ohio’s history, besting even the

Silver-certified, the 750,000-square-foot convention center can host meetings of all types and sizes. ALL was on the job from the first groundbreaking and provided five cranes to hoist the components of the structure’s massive steel frame. Crawler cranes, RTs and ATs handled lifting of the heaviest steel for the complex’s metal deck erection, with several 120-foot truss members, weighing up to 166,000 pounds each, forming the atrium’s support. This enormous and impressive complex augments what was already a thriving, world-class healthcare community in Cleveland, which is home to nationally recognized hospital systems including the Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals, and MetroHealth Medical Center.

construction of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum ($92 million) and the Center of Science and Industry (COSI) in Columbus ($125 million).

horseshoe Casino pedestrian BridgeCleveland’s weather can be rough in the winter, particularly downtown, where Lake Erie’s icy gales blow fiercely. In the fall of 2013, work began in earnest on a 175-foot, glass-enclosed pedestrian bridge, which would eventually connect the downtown Horseshoe Casino to its parking structure across the street. This enclosed pathway provides an added layer of convenience for casino visitors wishing to avoid the elements. ALL provided two all-terrain cranes and two rough-terrain cranes for this fast-paced job, which had to be completed in only a few months: a Liebherr LTM 1250-6.1 (300 USt), a Grove GMK 6250L (250 USt), a truck crane (100 USt), and a Link-Belt RTC-80100 Series II (100 USt). The RT was used

to build the pedestrian bridge’s frame on site, which was then pulled into position on skates. The Link-Belt RTC and Liebherr then worked together to lift the frame to its permanent second floor installation height, diagonally across Ontario Street and Prospect Avenue, while the connecting end piece was then fabricated and attached at the job site. The $5.6-million pedestrian bridge opened in December 2013.

These seven projects are only a small sampling to illustrate the groundswell of growth and restoration projects happening across Northeast Ohio, while other projects reach the final planning stages or are on the verge of breaking ground. From projects to expand University Hospitals and the Cleveland Clinic, to the dozens of commercial buildings being gutted and rebuilt as residential in response to the growing demand for urban living, the rebirth of this Midwest city is impressive and drawing new visitors and residents to the region every day.

Link-Belt ATC-3210

cranE that can bE transportEd Without rEquiring

rEmoval oF thE boom First, complying With tough

transport laWs, Which can vary From statE to statE.

When Link-Belt unveiled its 210 USt (185 mt) ATC-3210 at ConExpo in March, it was the answer to many a logistics manager’s dreams. The new mid-capacity all-terrain (AT) crane can be shipped in just three truckloads without having to remove the boom first.

Over the past decade, crane manufacturing has trended toward ever-increasing capacity. That’s great news for lift planners everywhere in terms of bigger lifts and increased efficiency on the job site. However, larger capacity often means a heavier crane — and that has different implications for transport in different countries. For example, in the United States, gross vehicle weight (GVW) restrictions on roadways allow less weight on the road than in other countries.

“They allow a lot more weight on the roads in Europe,” explained John Mummert, logistics manager, ALL Erection & Crane Rental Corp. So with larger-capacity cranes manufactured in and working in Europe, particularly self-propelled cranes, there are fewer issues transporting cranes to a job site. “But when those same cranes are put to work here in the United States, a lot of the ones that could travel boom-in in Europe end up being stripped down and trailed by several tractor trailers just to move them from our yards to the job sites.”

Link-Belt’s ATC-3210 is the biggest AT that can be transported without requiring removal of the boom first, complying with tough transport laws, which can vary from state to state. This translates directly into transportation savings, even considering state-to-state variability, with no single axle on the crane

weighing more than 22,000 pounds. This new AT follows Link-Belt’s 2011 release of the popular 275 USt (250 mt) ATC-3275, which has the flexibility to be configured to meet many state transport guidelines.

Construction professionals know that GVW restrictions are for the good of communities in which they work. If a crane is being utilized to repair a busy highway bridge overpass, the pressure is on to deliver value while getting the job done. But the weight of the crane should not cause additional damage to other roadways along the way.

35

“We get it for some of the behemoths out there,” said Mummert. “We know we aren’t driving our 900-USt crane to a job site with the boom in, ready to set down and work. But we have been looking to the manufacturers to develop mid-range capacity cranes that make sense for U.S. roadways.” Finally, Link-Belt has found answers.

Both the ATC-3210 and ATC-3275 were designed to respond to the toughest North American road laws while also meeting Tier IV final and EPA 2013 on-highway requirements. The success and popularity of the 3275 helped drive the decision to build and introduce the new AT. The ALL Family of Companies purchased two ATC-3210s and another ATC-3275, the latter going to Indiana to serve the Midwest region. ALL’s two 3210s will serve lifting needs in the Carolinas and other surrounding states from their home bases at ALL Carolina Crane Rental of Wilmington (NC) and ALL Carolina Crane & Equipment (Raleigh, NC).

The new 3210 AT crane moves at the best highway speeds on the market and includes a number of equipment features to streamline driving and

operation, including ABS, traction control, cruise control, and extra steering cylinders to assist with maneuvering over rough terrain. And the design is state-of-the-art, with a six-section boom made of ultra-high-strength steel — each section having multiple longitudinal bends. The boom includes Teflon inserts to assist with continued lubrication, which are universal to all sections. To answer customer feedback, Link-Belt added more and brighter lighting both inside and outside of this new model, with high-intensity LED lights on the outside of the cab and at the outriggers, with high-intensity boom floodlights also available.

Other advantages include maximized space for the stowable fly, centralized service points, a tilting upper cab, and many other advantages designed for comfort and ease of use by the operator to help ensure safe and reliable lifting.

To ask about renting an ATC-3210 or ATC-3275 from ALL, contact their Cleveland headquarters at 216-524-6550 or reach out to any of the 37 North American branches listed on the company’s website, allcrane.com.

MichaelGarrity,a20-yearsalesveteranattheALLFamilyofCompanies,hasbeennamedNewEquipmentSalesDirectorforthe37-branchenterprise,effectiveSeptember1,2014. AgraduateofAlbanyStateCollegeinNewYorkwithadegreeinbusinessadministration,Garritystartedhiscareerinaerialliftsalesandlatermovedintoall-inclusiveliftequipmentsales.TenyearslaterhejoinedALL,wherehebeganinbothequipmentsalesandrental. Whenaskedabouthissuccessfulsalescareer,Garritysaid,“SinceIgrewupinconstruction,IbelieveIhavetheabilitytounderstandwhatthecustomerrequiresandwhathispeoplerequiretodothejobright.Italktheirlanguage,andIknowwhatcontractorsarelookingfor.”

Here’s one reason: Michael Garrity, newly appointed New Equipment Sales Director at the ALL Family of Companies, literally grew up in the construction business. He came from a family of industrial contractors, so he was around large construction equipment from the time he could walk. Mike has spent the past 20 years at ALL as a sales and rental representative, where he has sharpened his skills to a fine point.

“I’ve been selling new and used construction equipment for my whole career — 30 years now,” said Garrity. “I’m proud of the high quality and depth of the equipment we sell at the 37 branches of the ALL Family of Companies.” What helps make him successful, Mike added, is the unwavering commitment ALL makes to its family of employees and to keeping its fleet of up-to-date equipment in perfect condition.

Here’s another: The ALL Family of Companies is not only the largest privately held crane rental and sales company in North America — it’s also an authorized dealer for many top brands of lift equipment.

EqUIPMENT BRANDS FOR SALEALL is the authorized Terex tier-one dealer in five states: Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, West virginia, and Wisconsin. Part of a knowledgeable distributor network that matches customers with just the right machine, ALL offers complete service with set-up to help optimize productivity. “We are proud to represent the complete Terex line, including rough-terrain cranes, all-terrain cranes, lattice boom crawlers, boom trucks, telescoping truck cranes, and Demag cranes, as well,” Garrity said.

ALL is also the authorized dealer for industrial and carry deck cranes from Broderson and Shuttlelift; the complete line of JLG boom lifts, vertical and scissor lifts, and telehandlers; Genie aerial work platforms, boom, scissor, and vertical mast lifts, material lifts, and telehandlers; Skyjack scissor lifts and boom lifts; National Crane and Manitex boom trucks; and Landoll trailers.

Leading Crane Rental Company Is Authorized Dealer for Top Equipment Brands

WHy BUy NEW EqUIPMENT FROM ALL?“My feeling is that contractors have so much on their plates already, the least of their worries should be which equipment to buy,” said Garrity. “ALL can promise to find them the right cost-effective and reliable equipment, plus industry-leading service after the sale. When customers invest in a piece of new equipment from ALL, they’re also buying a piece of the company legacy — the expertise, outstanding support, and maintenance acumen that we’ve developed at our 37 locations over the 50-year history of the company.”

Garrity pointed out that ALL crane rental customers often choose to buy the equipment they’ve rented after the end of the lease period. “If they like the specific equipment they’ve been renting, we offer them the convenience of opting to roll the rental agreement right into a purchase,” he explained.

WHy BUy USED EqUIPMENT FROM ALL?Garrity noted more reasons to buy lift equipment at ALL, either new or used. He said, “Every piece of used equipment we sell was once part of our rental fleet. Each unit is taken care of and serviced in our own shops by our own trained technicians. We don’t sell equipment that we’ve bought at auction that we don’t know the history of.”

But the strongest recommendation Garrity can make for buying from ALL is that, with the depth and breadth of the ALL fleet, he can find a crane for anyone that will fit their budget — “even a crawler, and that’s not easy.”

“We have it all, period,” he said. “Every aspect of our company comes into play. Who else has as wide a variety of up-to-date equipment? Who else has the best employees with the most current manufacturer training and safety training? And who else can offer such extensive support after the sale?”

Garrity added, “We take care of our equipment, and we take care of our customers.” That about says it ALL.

Leonard was working for Firestone when Michael C. Liptak, founder of ALL, recruited him to run the company’s new tire shop. He did everything related to tires, “and there was always plenty of work,” said Leonard with a smile. Leonard has always shown up to work at 6:00 a.m., even though his scheduled start was 7:30. “It’s worked for me,” he

said, explaining that by being there early, he can get things up and running. “I always felt a start time meant you started working at that time and I wanted to be ready,” Leonard said. “I love this job and it keeps me going.”

In 1976, after he had spent only a couple of years in tires, Mr. Liptak asked him if he wanted to start driving long-haul trucks for the company. Whatever ALL has needed, Leonard has done it, putting forth his best effort, even if it was something he had never done before — which was the case with trucking. But his determination and strong will served him well, and he learned quickly.

Of his early days in the cab, Leonard shared that he was proud, as a young truck driver, to have made it through the blizzard of 1978. He had been on his way to Salt Lake City, Utah, when the blizzard hit the Midwest, leaving him stuck in his cab for two days and three nights. The young, inexperienced driver took the advice of a stranger and managed to obtain and keep enough straight gasoline in his diesel tanks to keep his fuel from turning to sludge when the temperatures took a 30º dip. Like everything else in Leonard’s career, this allowed him to power through when the storm passed.

Leonard drove the truck for around 15 years through the 1990s until he moved into the car and truck parts division, where he stayed for a decade. But Leonard was always ready for change, and ALL Erection & Crane Rental was constantly changing.

“One day, Mr. Liptak came into the parts shop and just told me to pick up all my things and move them to the new truck building and

run it. I said, ‘Sure, Mr. Liptak,’ and I’ve been running the truck division ever since.”

ALL has 450 trucks spread throughout their North American footprint, and that immense fleet has to be maintained as expertly as the company’s crane fleet. Inventory has to be strategically and expertly managed to ensure continued availability. It’s a lot of responsibility, matched by Leonard’s dedication to doing it right. “Our trucks are safe and always ready to go. Routine maintenance, yes, but most important is lubrication. That’s the heart and soul of keeping the fleet moving. We stay on it and keep ’em clean. Clean, safe, sound. That’s our brand, no ifs, ands, or buts.”

Technology has changed things a lot in recent years, both in the state-of-the-art shops and in the office. Leonard now is happy to have some of the younger guys share some of the nuances of these technologies while he trades his years of hands-on experience, creating circuitous learning for everyone. “We embrace every technology here,” said Leonard. “I might lean on the young ones now, but they lean on me, too.”

The company recently held a well-attended and much-deserved 40th anniversary party for Leonard. Mr. Liptak was in attendance, as was May Kelley, Leonard’s wife, and his daughter Stephanie

Redmoen. Leonard also has another daughter, Michelle, who lives in North Carolina. All of them are very proud of Leonard, and rightfully so. This is a special achievement and Leonard truly is a special kind of individual who has been a real asset to the company.

Longevity at ALL is not completely unique to Leonard, however. He is aware that others in the company are hot on his heels, with Rick Mikut, head of the Crawler Crane Division, and Marc Picione, master mechanic, soon to reach their 40th anniversaries. His advice to them? “Follow the leader.”

ALL Welcomes Hutton StraderALL enjoyed a strong and mutually beneficial relationship with sales representative Hutton Strader, who worked for one of the world’s leading crane authorities. Over time, they came to appreciate and admire his blend of intelligence, curiosity, and leadership skills and his affable, easygoing manner. The next step became clear — they decided to create a new position for him with the ALL Family of Companies.

Effective immediately, Strader serves as ALL’s business development specialist. In this multifaceted position, Strader will focus on high-priority account management, company-wide sales support, and product training. He will also assist product managers at the Cleveland headquarters with fleet evaluation and new product assessments.

Strader, who has a mechanical engineering degree from virginia Polytechnic Institute, will also draw from his experience as an engineer to further improve ALL’s lift analysis capabilities, continuing to emphasize safety, efficiency, and uptime.

Overall, the new position blends Strader’s experience and knowledge, allowing him to bridge sales and marketing functions. He approaches both with a unique strategy to combine problem solving and problem avoidance, internally and externally.

He joins the ALL Family of Companies from Liebherr Cranes Inc., where he was national accounts manager for more than five years. It was in this position that Strader came to learn more about the ALL Family. “I took a comprehensive approach to national accounts and came to understand how the company operated, seeing the 37-branch ALL Family as one entity,” said Strader. “I work from the top down and from the bottom up; I know that everyone in the organization has something important to share.”
