Introduction
The objective is to get from this setup in LSS1To this configuration…
This implies,Installation of the new MSI-VIncluding all supports, vacuum equipment, sector valves, quick release couplings on chambers and on electrical connections

remote clamping system
Layout description .. and the complicationsSince this zone is very radioactive (most recent measurements, 22 mSv/h), all manipulations have to be rapid, efficient and safe. Avoid where possible the necessity to bake out the TIDVG (HP water)
Plans for external dump may provide relief, but not before LS3.

Additional vacuum devices + supports
Remote handling system for opening and closing flanges on tanks. Note: a rigid support structure is necessary for these devices.
We also require a remote operated electrical connection device similar to the MSE/MST
Bellows upstream and downstream
Sector Vacuum valves-big!

Layout & Electrical
Due to the current measurement precision, a DCCT shall be installed. The DCCT is very susceptible to damage from radiation so it should be installed as far as possible from the TIDVG.This implies positioning the transformers also quite far away. Longer striplines, more inductance and resistance but EPC have confirmed to place them up to 15m away.
The remote operated electrical connection (2 off) shall be based on a similar system fitted to the MS.
555 ppm of the reference current.
Emittance blow up due to the ripple shall be investigated (JU/TK)
Use of the transverse damper shall also be investigated for damping the transverse oscillations.

Progress
Some basic layouts have been studied and a Catia model of the vacuum tank is 50% complete,
Costing is underway:Vacuum estimate received from VSCPower supply (EPC) is determinedCost impact from remote handling requirement still to be assessed.
Functional Specifications are under review. The first release has been circulated and the second release shall be sent for comments / approval as soon as possible. EDMS. SPU-M-ES-0001 v.0.1Engineering specification planned by mid-2015.ECR to be done.

Design period allocated 2.5 months, installation foreseen 2019!Some more time required…
Increased from initial estimates of approx. 300 and 150
Present apt data based on fact that PSB magnets become available only in LS2.Total resources allocated for time being 1.8 MY. Slightly low, but with some additional help from FSU may be ok.Currently no work units in EVM for ion injection

Problem areas
The additional vacuum devices such as, remote release clamps, have been designed already for SPS (SPS.8073.6468.0, 6469 and 6470).These devices shall have to be checked and their compatibility with the new system shall be confirmed. If not compatible..?
Beam Impedance screen to be designed and integrated
Missing resources
preparation of magnets can only begin when the SMV10 and SMV20 are no longer necessary in the PSB (PSB 2 GeV upgrade ) or begin dismantling the ‘hot’ reserve magnets at an earlier date (!?)
resources assigned to design phase from 2018 only – too late!

Planning
Design and manufacture of MSI-V
Dismantling and installation in SPS
Realistically one should start the project earlier.
Installation in the tunnel seems okNo showstoppers and according to latest planning we have until end Feb to finish

Conclusions
From an original fairly simple task things have changed,
• Increased complexity has arisen due to remote handling, radiation levels, etc• Budget estimate has increased significantly since first proposal• Impact of remote handling requirements still not fully clear (budget)• Current stability requirement presents more challenges for the EPC team• Space requirements for 2 transformers and 15m electrical connections imply more
study• Should make sure that sufficient resources are available early enough, before the
presently planned date (ideally Q2 2016).• Engineering / design resources should be available before 2018Currently no budget
