    God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, avillage in Galilee, to a virgin named Mary.She was engaged to be married to a mannamed Joseph, a descendant of King David.Gabriel appeared to her and said,Greetings, favored woman! The Lord is

    with you!Confused and disturbed, Mary tried to thinkwhat the angel could mean. Dont befrightened, Mary, the angel told her, forGod has decided to bless you! You willbecome pregnant and have a son, and you

    are to name him Jesus. Luke 1:26-31

    A few days later Mary hurried to the hill country

    of Judea, to the town where Zechariah lived.She entered the house and greeted Elizabeth.At the sound of Marys greeting, Elizabeths childleaped within her, and Elizabeth was filled withthe Holy Spirit.Elizabeth gave a glad cry and exclaimed to

    Mary, You are blessed by God above all otherwomen, and your child is blessed. What anhonor this is, that the mother of my Lord shouldvisit me!Mary stayed with Elizabeth about three monthsand then went back to her own home.

    The Roman emperor, Augustus, decreed that a

    census should be taken throughout the RomanEmpire. All returned to their own towns toregister for this census. And because Joseph wasa descendant of King David, he had to go toBethlehem in Judea, Davids ancient home. Hetraveled there from the village of Nazareth in

    Galilee. He took with him Mary, his fiance, whowas pregnant by this time. And while they werethere, the time came for her baby to be born.She gave birth to her first child, a son. Shewrapped him swaddling clothes and laid him in amanger, because there was no room for them in

    the inn. Luke 2: 1-7

    That night some shepherds were in the fieldsoutside the village, guarding their flocks ofsheep. Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appearedamong them, and the radiance of the Lords glorysurrounded them. They were terribly frightened,but the angel reassured them. Dont be afraid!he said. I bring you good news of great joy for

    everyone! The Savioryes, the Messiah, theLordhas been born tonight in Bethlehem, thecity of David!They ran to the village and found Mary andJoseph. And there was the baby, lying in themanger.

    Then it was time for the purification offering,as required by the law of Moses after thebirth of a child; so his parents took him toJerusalem to present him to the Lord. Thelaw of the Lord says, If a womans first childis a boy, he must be dedicated to the Lord.

    So they offered a sacrifice according to whatwas required in the law of the Lordeither apair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.

    The star appeared to them, guiding them toBethlehem. It went ahead of them and stoppedover the place where the child was. When theysaw the star, they were filled with joy! Theyentered the house where the child and hismother, Mary, were, and they fell down before

    him and worshiped him. Then they openedtheir treasure chests and gave him gifts of gold,frankincense, and myrrh.

    After the wise men were gone, an angel ofthe Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream.Get up and flee to Egypt with the child andhis mother, the angel said. Stay there untilI tell you to return, because Herod is goingto try to kill the child. That night Joseph leftfor Egypt with the child and Mary, hismother, and they stayed there until Herodsdeath. This fulfilled what the Lord hadspoken through the prophet: I called mySon out of Egypt.

    When Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in adream to Joseph in Egypt and told him, Get up and

    take the child and his mother back to the land of Israel,because those who were trying to kill the child aredead. So Joseph returned immediately to Israel withJesus and his mother They went and lived in a towncalled Nazareth. This fulfilled what was spoken by theprophets concerning the Messiah: He will be called a

    Nazarene.

    Matthew 2:19-23

    There the child grew up healthy and strong. He wasfilled with wisdom beyond his years, and God placed hisspecial favor upon him.

    Every year Jesus parents went to Jerusalem for

    the Passover festival. When Jesus was twelveyears old, they attended the festival as usual.After the celebration was over, they startedhome to Nazareth, but Jesus stayed behind inJerusalemThree days later they finallydiscovered him. He was in the Temple, sitting

    among the religious teachers, discussing deepquestions with them. And all who heard himwere amazed at his understanding and hisanswers.

    Open our hearts to receive his life

    And increase our vision with the rising of the dawn,That our lives may be filled with his glory and his peace,Who lives and reigns for ever and ever.
