My personal 40-day guide to a successful fast Prophet/Pastor Mike & Lisa Claiborne, Lead Pastors

Dear New Rivers’ Family, We a re so glad that you have chosen to join us on this journey of 40 Days ofConsecration unto the Lord. Prayer and fasting has been an essential part of our life and walk with God,and is the most powerful spiritual discipline of all the Christian disciplines. According to Scripture,

personal experience and observation, We are convinced that when God's people fast with a properBiblical motive (seeking God's face not His hand), coupled with a broken, repentant, and contrite spirit,God will hear from heaven, forgive our sins and heal our land, our churches, our communities, our nationand world. Fasting and prayer will bring about revival - a change in the direction of our nation, thenations of earth and the fulfillment of God’s will for our lives.

Our 40 Days of Consecration will begin on Monday, January 2nd and end on Friday, February 10th .

We are so excited because we know that my relationship with Him is going to the next dimension. Thetime has come when the “True Church” must come alive! The only way that this can happen is that wemust be made alive through the power of the Holy Ghost. We are declaring: NO MORE FLATLINING;our hearts will be quickened back to God! Through our period of fasting, we are showing God that we’reready to make the sacrifice to receive all that He has for us. “We must be willing to do what otherswon’t, that we may have what others can’t.” I know it has entered your mind, “Why forty days?”Please read Matthew 4, and it speaks of our Lord fasting for forty days and nights. Why did He do it? Hedid it for dominion. He did it for authority. Adam lost dominion when he ate of the fruit of the tree Godtold him not to eat. Esau lost his birthright by eating. In the wilderness, the children of Israel lost thePromised Land by eating quail when God had given them His supernatural provision of manna.

40 DAYS OF PRAYER & FASTING JOURNAL

Is that food you feel like eating, rather than fasting, worth the risk of you missing the promise of God?Fasting makes you tough in the spirit. Fasting ma kes the inner man rise up and say, “Devil, who do youthink you are to mess with my family, or put fear in my mind, or inflict my body. Greater is He that is inme.” By fasting forty days and nights, Jesus got back dominion. He returned in the power of the Spiritafter he fasted. For some reason, fasting is one of the most neglected spiritual admonitions. In fact, it has

been ignored for so long that you rarely hear about it; and, it is difficult to find information on the "how-to's" of this life-changing experience. With that said, the enclosed information is designed to answer your

practical questions about fasting and ease any concerns you might have. We are grateful to God to havecompleted a 40- day fast, along with many “Daniel’s” and “liquid -only” fast s, and we want to share withyou what we have learned and what has helped us. We pray that God's favor and blessings will be pouredout on you as you take this exciting step of faith.

In His service

Prophet/Pastor Mike & Lisa Claiborne

WHAT IS FASTING?

BIBLICAL FACTS ON FASTING:

Fasting was an expected discipline in both the Old and New Testament eras. For example, Moses fasted atleast two recorded forty-day periods. Jesus fasted 40 days and reminded His followers to fast, "when youfast," not if you fast.

Fasting and prayer can restore the loss of the "first love" for your Lord and result in a more intimaterelationship with Christ.

Fasting is a biblical way to truly humble yourself in the sight of God (Psalm 35:13; Ezra 8:21). KingDavid said, "I humble myself through fasting."

Fasting enables the Holy Ghost to reveal your true spiritual condition, resulting in brokenness, repentance, and a transformed life.

The Holy Ghost will quicken the Word of God in your heart and His truth will become more meaningfulto you!

Fasting can transform your prayer life into a richer and more personal experience.

Fasting can result in a dynamic personal revival in your own life-and make you a channel of revival toothers.

Fasting and prayer are the only disciplines that fulfill the requirements of II Chronicles 7:14

Fasting is a spiritual discipline that is taught in the Bible. Jesus expected His followers to fast, and Hesaid that God rewards fasting. Fasting, according to the Bible, means to voluntarily reduce or eliminate

your intake of food for a specific time and purpose.

“And when you fast, don’t make it obvious, as the hypocrites do, for they try to look miserable anddisheveled so people will admire them for their fasting. I tell you the truth that is the only reward they willever get. But when you fast, comb your hair and wash your face. Then no one will notice that you are

fasting, except your Father, who knows what you do in private. And your Father, who sees everything, will reward y ou.”– Matthew 6:16-18 (NLT)

THREE REASONS FOR FASTING

1. Fasting gives you more time for prayer. You can use the time you'd normally spend eating as time in prayer for what God wants to do among us during this consecration. In the Bible, fasting is alwaysconnected with prayer. (Acts 13:2-3)

2. Fasting also demonstrates the depth of your desire when praying for something. It shows you that youare serious enough about your prayer request to pay a personal price. God honors deep desire and prayingin faith. (Joel 1:14, 2:12)

3. Finally, fasting releases God's supernatural power. It is a tool we can use when there is opposition toGod's will. Satan would like nothing better than to cause division, discouragement, defeat, depression,

Page 4: 40 Days Fasting & Praying

and doubt among us. United prayer and fasting has always been used by God to deal a decisive blow tothe enemy! (Ezra 8:23, Isaiah 58:6)

EXAMPLES OF FASTING Often in the Bible, God's people fasted immediately before a major victory, miracle, or answer to prayer. It prepared them for a blessing!

• Moses fasted before he received the Ten Commandments.

“And he was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights; he did neither eat bread, nor drink water. And he wrote upon the tables the words of the covenant, the Ten Commandments .” Exodus 34:28 (KJV)

• The Israelites fasted before a miraculous victory.

“Then there came some that told Jehoshaphat, saying, There cometh a great multitude against thee frombeyond the sea on this side Syria; and, behold, they be in Hazazontamar, which is Engedi. And

Jehoshaphat feared, and set himself to seek the LORD, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah. ” 2Chronicles 20:2-3 (KJV)

• Daniel fasted in order to receive guidance from God.

“ And I set my face unto the Lord God, to seek by prayer and supplications, with fasting, and sackcloth, and ashes:” Daniel 9:3 (KJV) “Yea, whiles I was speaking in prayer, even the man Gabriel, whom I had

seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, touched me about the time of the eveningoblation. And he informed me, and talked with me, and said, O Daniel, I am now come forth to give thee

skill and understanding.” Daniel 9:21-22 (KJV)

• Nehemiah fasted before beginning a major building project.

“And it came to pass, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned certain days, and

fasted, and pray ed before the God of heaven” Nehemiah 1:4 (KJV)

• Jesus fasted during His victory over temptation.

“Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended,he afterward hungered.” Luke 4:2 (KJV)

• The first Christians fasted during-decision making times.

“As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for thework whereunto I have called them. And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away.” Acts 13:2-3 (KJV)

Fasting is not "earning" an answer to prayer. God cannot be blackmailed by human effort.

God wants to answer our prayers and He answers out of grace.

Fasting simply prepares us for God's answer.

40 DAYS OF PRAYER & FASTING JOURNAL

MAKING YOUR SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCE THE BEST IT CAN BE Receiving God's best blessing from a fast requires solid commitment. Arranging special time each day with God is absolutelycrucial in attaining intimate communion with the Father. You must devote yourself to seeking God's face, even (and especially) during those times in which you feel weak, vulnerable, or irritable. Read His Wordand pray during what were mealtimes. Meditate on Him when you awake in the night. Sing praises toHim whenever you please. Focus on your Heavenly Father and make every act one of praise and worship.God will enable you to experience His command to "pray without ceasing" as you seek His presence. Asyou enter this time of heightened spiritual devotion, be aware that Satan will do everything he can to pullyou away from your prayer and Bible reading time. When you feel the enemy trying to discourage you, immediately go to God in prayer and ask Him to strengthen your resolve in the face of difficulties andtemptations. The enemy makes you a target because he knows that fasting is the most powerful of allChristian disciplines and that God may have something very special to show you as you wait upon Himand seek His face. Satan does not want you to grow in your faith, and will do anything from making youhungry and grumpy to bringing up trouble in your family or at work to stop you. Make prayer your shield

against such attacks. Do not become so caught up in praying for yourself and others that you forget aboutsimply reverencing and praising God. True spiritual fasting focuses on God. Center your total being onHim, your attitudes, actions, motives, desires, and words. This can only take place if God and His HolySpirit are at the center of your attention. Confess your sins as the Holy Spirit brings them to your attentionand continue to focus on God and God alone so that your prayers may be powerful and effective. Arenewed closeness with God and a greater sensitivity to spiritual things are usually the results of a fast.Do not be disappointed if you do not have a "mountaintop experience," as some do. Many people whohave successfully completed extended fasts tell of feeling a nearness to God that they have never beforeknown, but others who have honestly sought His face report no particular outward results at all. Forothers, their fast was physically, emotionally, and spiritually grueling, but they knew they had been called

by God to fast, and they completed the fast unto Him as an act of worship. God honored thatcommitment. Your motive in fasting must be to glorify God, not to have an emotional experience, and notto attain personal happiness. When your motives are right, God will honor your seeking heart and blessyour time with Him in a very special way.

HOW TO FAST SAFELY As you begin your fast, you may hear from concerned loved ones and friendswho urge you to protect your health. And they are right. You should protect your health. But I assure you,if done properly, fasting will not only prove to be a spiritual blessing, but a physical blessing as well. Ifyou are under any type of medication, make sure you talk to your doctor before changing your regimen.Prudence and caution are in order. In spite of the absolute safety and benefits of fasting, there are certain

persons who should NEVER fast without professional supervision. For example:

• Persons who are physically too thin or emaciated.

• Persons who are prone to anorexia, bulimia, or other behavioral disorders.

• Those who suffer weakness or anemia.

• Persons who have tumors, bleeding ulcers, cancer, blood diseases, or who have heart disease.

Page 6: 40 Days Fasting & Praying

• Those who suffer chronic problems with kidneys, liver, lungs, heart, or other important organs.

• Individuals who take insulin for diabetes, or suffer any other blood sugar problem such ashyperglycemia.

• Women who are pregnant or nursing.

Please be aware that many doctors have not been trained in this area and so their understanding islimited.

HOW TO PREPARE YOURSELF SPIRITUALLY AND PHYSICALLY

Spiritual Preparation

In preparation for this special time with God, I strongly urge you to examine your heart. Scripture recordsthat God always requires His people to repent of their sins before He will hear their prayers. King Davidsaid: Come and hear, all of you who reverence the Lord, and I will tell you what he did for me: For Icried to him for help, with praises ready on my tongue. He would not have listened if I had not confessedmy sins. But he listened! He heard my prayer! He paid attention to it! Blessed be God who didn't turnaway when I was praying, and didn't refuse me his kindness and love. (Psalm 66:16-20) In your prayers, remember to repent of anything that will hinder God from hearing your prayers. These may include, butnot limited to; worldly-mindedness, self-centeredness, spiritual indifference, and unwillingness to shareyour faith in Christ with others, not spending sufficient time in God's Word and in prayer, a poorrelationship with your spouse, your children, your pastor, or other members of your church.

Physical Preparation

Although fasting is primarily a spiritual discipline, it begins in the physical realm. You should not fastwithout specific physical preparation. If you plan on fasting for several days, you will find it helpful to

begin by eating smaller meals before you abstain altogether. Resist the urge to have that "last big feast" before the fast. Cutting down on your meals a few days before you begin the fast will signal your mind, stomach, and appetite that less food is acceptable. Some health professionals suggest eating only rawfoods for two days before starting a fast. I also recommend weaning yourself off caffeine and sugar

products to ease your initial hunger or discomfort at the early stages of your fast.

THE SPIRITUAL DISCIPLINE OF FASTING "When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocritesdo, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. I tell you the truth, they have received theirreward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obviousto men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what isdone in secret, will reward you." Matthew 6:16-18 This passage comes right in the middle of Jesus'teaching on prayer and giving. In this sermon, Jesus uses phrases like: "When you give" (v. 2), "Whenyou pray" (v. 5), and "When you fast" (v. 16). Jesus assumes that his audience will give, will pray, andwill fast. Fasting is not an option. It is not an oddity. Fasting, according to Jesus, is a given. In fact, fasting is mentioned more times in the Bible than baptism!

THE DANGER IN THE DISCIPLINE But there is an inherent danger in fasting. It is the same dangerthat is found in the practice of any spiritual discipline. We can turn fasting into an end unto itself, rather

Page 7: 40 Days Fasting & Praying

8/13/2019 40 Days Fasting & Praying

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/40-days-fasting-praying 7/18

than a means to an end. It can become merely an external practice without an internal passion. It can bereduced to a habit without heart . We see an example of this in Luke 18:12, where Jesus tells the story ofa Pharisee who bragged to God in prayer that he fasted twice a week. Pharisees habitually fasted twice aweek, usually on the 2nd and 5th days of the week. These two days happened to be the major days for theJewish market. That meant the city was packed with farmers, merchants, and shoppers. Therefore, these

days of public fasting would have the largest audiences. Jesus condemned the practice of fasting when itwas done in such a way as to receive public adulation.

We have an ability to take that which is sacred, holy, and meant to draw us closer to the Father, and turn itinto a merely mechanical, religious drill that we use to impress others of our spirituality. What wasintended to draw us to God now actually distances us from God because we have perverted it. And Godnotices this. He prompted the prophet Zechariah to ask the people and the priests of Israel, "During thoseseventy years of exile, when you fasted and mourned in the summer and at the festival in early autumn, was it really for Me that you were fasting? " (Zechariah 7:5 NLT, Italics is PKC )

HOW TO MANAGE YOUR SCHEDULE WHILE FASTING how long you fast, the kind of fast you

undertake, and how you adjust your work schedule depends mostly on your occupation. Persons withoffice jobs, pastors, or homemakers may find it easier to continue their duties and fast for longer periodsof time. Those who are engaged in strenuous physical labor may wish to consider a partial fast (Daniel’sor 1 meal a day). Reasons for schedule adjustments, especially during an extended fast, are two-fold...

The first is physical . Throughout your fast, you may feel somewhat weaker than normal. During the firstfew days, you may feel tired and irritable. Lightening your workload and cutting down on strenuousexercise would be a very good idea to maintain your health and your morale.

The second reason is spiritual . Fasting is not just denying yourself food. It is exchanging the needs ofthe physical body for those of the spiritual. Long times of prayer and reading God's Word will be very

essential if you are to enter into a more intimate communion with God to maintain your fast to itscompletion. While fasting, if you dissipate your energy on numerous errands or busy-work to the neglectof spending special time with God, you will starve both physically and spiritually. You will find yourself

becoming discouraged and frustrated with your fast instead of being benefited and uplifted and blessed. The more time you spend with God in fellowship, worship, and adoration of Him, and the more you readand meditate upon His Word, the greater your effectiveness will be in prayer and the more meaningfulyour fast will be. So I encourage you to arrange your schedule accordingly!

DEALING WITH THE RESPONSES OF FRIENDS AND LOVED ONES Many people are reluctantto tell others that they are fasting so they will avoid the sin of the Pharisees: fasting just to gainrecognition for themselves. I strongly believe that attitude to be the result of a wrong interpretation of our

Lord's teaching and that it is a trick of the enemy who does not want us to fast, nor to share with yourloved ones, neighbors and friends the benefits of fasting. By isolating ourselves from the support of otherChristians, we will be more susceptible to doubts and negative influences (both human and demonic). Weneed the prayer shield of our Christian friends and family members to help us continue when we feelalone and when the enemy tempts us to give up as he did Jesus Christ. Eventually, people will notice youare not eating. If you are asked, nonbelievers may be satisfied by such a brief answer as, "I have other

plans for lunch today." Or Christians should be satisfied when you answer that you are fasting today. Iffriends and family express concern for your health, ease their fears by telling them that you will stop

Page 8: 40 Days Fasting & Praying

8/13/2019 40 Days Fasting & Praying

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/40-days-fasting-praying 8/18

fasting the moment you feel you are harming your body or if the Lord leads you to end your fast. There isusually no reason for telling strangers or casual acquaintances that you are fasting. If you do, they maysubject you to a lot of questions that you may not want to answer. But in any case, use your best judgmentand the Lord's leading in telling people about your fast.

HOW TO MAINTAIN NUTRITIONAL BALANCE AND HEALTH We know the prospect of goingwithout food for an extended period of time may be of concern to some. But there are ways to ensure thatyour body is getting the nutrients it needs so you can remain safe and healthy during your fast. For aliquid only fast, I recommend water and fruit and vegetable juices. The natural sugars in juices provideenergy, and the taste and strength are motivational to continue your fast. Try to drink fresh juices, if

possible. Off-the-shelf juice products are acceptable, as long as they are 100% juice with no sugar orother additives. When we begin our fast, there are certain juices you may wish to avoid and certain onesthat are especially beneficial. Because of their acid content, most nutritionists do not advise orange ortomato juice (these are better tolerated if mixed with equal portions of water). The best juices are freshcarrot, grape, celery, apple, cabbage, or beet. They also recommend "green drinks" made from green leafyvegetables because they are excellent "detoxifiers." Fruit juices are "cleansers" and are best taken in the

morning. Since vegetable juices are "restorers" and "builders," they are best taken in the afternoon.Drinking broth is also recommended.

I suggest that you do not drink milk because it is a pure food and therefore a violation of the fast. Any product containing protein or fat, such as milk or soy-based drinks, should be avoided. These productswill restart the digestion cycle and you will again feel hunger pangs. Also, for health reasons stay awayfrom caffeinated beverages such as coffee, tea, or cola. Because caffeine is a stimulant, it has a more

powerful effect on your nervous system when you abstain from food. This works both against the physical and spiritual aspects of the fast. Another key factor in maintaining optimum health during a fastis to limit your physical activity. Short naps are helpful as well. Walking a mile or two each day at amoderate pace is acceptable for a person in good health, and on a fast. However, no one on a water fastshould exercise without the supervision of a fasting specialist.

WHAT TO EXPECT PHYSICALLY Although fasting can be an indescribable blessing, it is notalways easy for everyone. In this time of discipline, self-sacrifice and reflection do not be surprised if youexperience mental and physical discomforts. To begin, you may experience some inner conflict when youdeny yourself the pleasure of eating delicious food. Any sort of fast may sometimes leave you feelingimpatient and irritable. The chart found on the next page lists the physical effects along with thesuggested remedies for relief.

PHYISICAL EFFECT

Hunger Pangs: These are greatest usually during the first three days of the fast. Your body is adjustingfrom using the food in your digestive tract (which remains about three days) to consuming stored fats.

Coldness, bad breath and heightened body odor, changes in elimination (constipation or diarrhea), light-headedness, changes in sleeping and dreaming patterns, aches and pains. A white-coated tongue at the

beginning of a fast may be a part of the body's pattern of throwing off toxins. Also expect to go the bathroom often (you will be drinking lots of water!)

Page 9: 40 Days Fasting & Praying

Headaches or stomachaches may be a result of salt, sugar, or caffeine withdrawal

Lower back pain may indicate that you are dehydrating.

Dizziness may be caused by a sudden change in position, such as rising suddenly from a chair.

Minor fasting discomfort

Eliminating those items from your diet prior to fasting is the best way to avoid these pains.

Drink more fluids

Stop for a second or two, then, recover. Move slowly. (A word of caution: these conditions may besymptoms of other problems requiring medical attention).

PRAYER of commitment to pray for 40 days :

Father God, I renounce the deceptions, lies and guilt that have tormented me. In yourname, Lord, I strip away every stronghold or mindset in my soul that blocks God'struth. I choose to believe your Word and to submit to truth, in balance, and with mywhole heart. I break agreement with all my ancestor's sins. I release all my hurts toyour healing and justice. We (NRM) will covenant together to take the Word of God,resist lies and embrace truth, like Jesus did, for 40 days. We will swing the Sword ofthe Spirit until we have victory in our own lives and the beam is out of our own eye!

WE (NRM) WILL UNITE OUR PRAYERS to agree with God's truth rather than ournegative mindsets. We will persevere for our hope is in God's Word to us, which will notfail. In the name of Jesus, we loose ourselves from contending with the Word and bindourselves to God's will, way and timing.

Rom 12:22) Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Thenyou will be able to test and approve what God's will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will.

2 Cor. 10:4-54) The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power todemolish strongholds.5) We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we takecaptive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

Eph. 6:11-1211) Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes.12) For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powersof this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

Phil 1:9-119) And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight,10) so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ,11) filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ--to the glory and praise of God.

WE UNITE OUR PRAYERS to loose ourselves from every form of selfish independenceand every strategy of the enemy to separate us from others, from God and even fromourselves. We bind ourselves to the unity of the Spirit of God in our homes, churches andin our city. It is written in the Word of God:

Matt 18:18-2018) I tell you the truth, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will beloosed in heaven. 19 Again, I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be donefor you by my Father in heaven. 20 For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them."

Ps 133:11) How good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in unity!

Prov. 3:5-75) Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;6) in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

Page 12: 40 Days Fasting & Praying

7) Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and shun evil.

Prov. 3: 13-1813) Blessed is the man who finds wisdom, the man who gains understanding,14) for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold.15) She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her.16) Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor.17) Her ways are pleasant ways, and all her paths are peace.18) She is a tree of life to those who embrace her; those who lay hold of her will be blessed.

Prov. 6:16-1916) There are six things the LORD hates, seven that are detestable to him:17) haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood,18) a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil,19) a false witness who pours out lies and a man who stirs up dissension among brothers.

Prov. 31:11-12, 26-3110) A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies.11) Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value.12) She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life.26) She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue.27) She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.28) Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her:29) Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all."30) Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.31) Give her the reward she has earned, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.

Eph. 5:21-2721) Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. 22 Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord.23) For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior.24) Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.25) Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless.
