In the Battle of Fleurus (June 26, 1794) French forces under Jourdan defeated an Austrian army in one of the most decisive battles in the Low Countries during the French Revolutionary Wars. Both sides had forces numbering in the vicinity of 80,000 men but the French were able to more effectively concentrate their forces in order to achieve victory against the Austrians. The French use of the reconnaissance balloon 'l'Entreprenant', seen in the sky upper right, marked the first military use of an aircraft that had decisive influence on the outcome of the battle. L'Entreprenant continuously informed Jourdan about Austrian movements. From the series 'Conquêtes de Napoléonle Grand' published 1802. Numbered 'No.29' upper right. Ref: 9021

Creases; tear to centre of image. Laid on board. £420 Bird's eye view of the Battle of Warsaw (with that city in the distance upper left) on July 18, 1656 – July 20, 1656, between the armies of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and of Sweden and Brandenburg. It was a major battle in the war between Poland and Sweden in the period 1655 - 1660, also known as The Deluge (part of the Northern Wars). Latin key explanations to points of interest are set into a decorative cartouche lower left. A vignette portrait of the victorious Charles X Gustav (1622 – 1660), King of Sweden above this. In the battle, a smaller Swedish-Brandenburg force gained victory over a Polish-Lithuanian force superior in numbers, though in the long term the victory achieved little. Polish-Lithuanian losses were insignificant, and even though Swedish forces were able to reoccupy Warsaw, they were forced to abandon it soon afterward. The Xhosa Wars, also known as the Kaffir Wars or Cape Frontier Wars, were a series of nine wars between the amaXhosa people and European settlers from 1779 to 1879 in what is now the Eastern Cape in South Africa. In April 1851 Sir William Eyre (1805 - 1859)defeated the Kaffirs at Quibigui River, and on 10 September at Committee's Hill. On 7 April he captured over eight

hundred cattle in an independent expedition into the Amatola country. This may be the incident here depicted, as cattle are running in the background. When Sir George Cathcart succeeded Sir Harry Smith, he maintained Eyre in command of his independent column, and under the new commander-in-chief Eyre co-operated throughout the final operations of the Kaffir war with the greatest credit. 430. Painted Glass In A Window Of Farndon Church Containing Portraits of Cheshire Gentlemen who attended K. Charles I. at the Seige of Chester. From a Drawing contributed by the very Revd. Hugh Cholmondeley Dean of Chester. London, George Routledge & Sons, 1878. Hand coloured etching, 365 x 285mm. 14¼ x 11¼". £85 In 1662 William Barnston commissioned this Civil War window in his chapel in St. Chad's, Farndon, Cheshire. It commemorates the Royalist defenders of Chester. The artist obtained accurate details of dress and equipment from contemporary illustrations. You can see that the officers wear 'bucket-top' boots, while the musketeers, pikemen and musicians have breeches and stockings with garters tied in a bow. From left to right along the top are Sir Richard Grosvenor, Sir William Mainwaring and William Barnston, identified by their coats of arms. In the centre, Sir Francis Gamul, another of Charles's attendants at the Siege of Chester, stands in front of his tent, reviewing a fascinating array of military equipment. St. Chad's role in the Civil War is an exciting one. In 1643 it was used as barracks for his troops by Sir William Brereton, commander of the Cheshire and Lancashire Parliamentarian forces. The Parliamentarians needed to force a passage over the

Dee and invade the Royalist stronghold of Wales. On 9th November some 2,000 Roundheads were assembled near the bridge, on which the Royalists had built a defensive gatehouse. On the opposite bank, the Royalists were well prepared, their ranks swelled by extra troops from Ireland. They rang the bells of Holt church backwards and lit beacons to warn of the invasion. Brereton distracted the defence by marching a detachment of his troops down river. Then a second division attacked the bridge with the full force of their grenades, and broke through. Both sides fought backwards and forwards along the bridge and as far back as Farndon churchyard. In the confusion of battle few even noticed that the church roof was ablaze. Brereton by-passed Holt Castle to take Wrexham and Hawarden. Although severely damaged, Farndon church remained a garrison until the winter of 1645, when advancing Royalists, led by Prince Rupert and Prince Maurice, forced the Roundheads to flee, after more heavy fighting, leaving the church derelict. Published By Thomas Agnew & Sons, Printsellers To Her Majesty The Queen, Exchange St. Manchester & Exchange Buildings, Liverpool. May 1st. 1861. Printed by J> Brooker. Mixed method engraving, 665 x 930mm. 26¼ x 36½". Marginal tears, light spotting. £620 Florence Nightingale (1820 - 1910), reformer of hospital nursing and of the Army Medical Services kneeling on the ground and offering a cup to a wounded soldier lying on a stretcher. Many people are gathered round, including a man in oriental dress with two children. This scene at Scutari, called Üsküdar, a large and densely populated suburb of Istanbul, on the Anatolian shore of the Bosphorus right opposite the heart of the great city. Florence Nightingale reformed hospital nursing during the 19th Century. She trained as a sick nurse and was invited to take nurses out to tend the wounded in the Crimean War (1854). Although the assault failed, the gallantry of Windham's conduct earned the warm commendation of General James Simpson, who had succeeded Lord Raglan in the command of the army in the Crimea. Extraordinary enthusiasm was aroused when the descriptions of the assault, written by the special correspondents of the ‘Times’ and other papers, were published in England, and Windham became, in a moment, the best known and most popular man in his native country. 450. To the Right Honorable Charles Philip Yorke, First Lord of the Admiralty, This Print elucidating the extreme disproportion of Force between the American Frigate President Commodore Rodgers, and His Majesty's Sloop the Little Belt Arthur Batt Bingham Esquire Commander, and representing the situation of both Ships in the morning after the Action of the 11 May 1811. is respectfully inscribed by his obliged Servant Josh. Cartwright. Drawn by J. Cartwright. Engraved by J. Hassell. London, Pub. 1 Dec. 1811 by J. Hassell, No.11 Clements Inn & J. Cartwright, 39, Arundel Street, Strand. Hand coloured aquatint, image 350 x 520mm. 13¾ x 20½". £1500 This fine aquatint records the 'Little Belt Affair' on the night of May 16, 1811. It involved the American frigate USS President and the British sixth-rate HMS Little Belt, a sloop-of-war. The incident took place off Sandy Hook on the North Carolina coast. This action was one of many incidents and events that led to the War of 1812 between the countries. It was a mismatch; President sustained only one human injury while Little

Belt took ten deaths and 22 injuries, and the sloop was badly damaged in the attack. On the morning of May 17th, American Lieutenant John Creighton went to Little Belt to apologize for the 'unfortunate affair' and to offer space at any of the 'Ports of the United States', which the British Commander Bingham declined. When Bingham asked why President had attacked his much smaller ship, Creighton claimed that it was because Little Belt had provoked the action. Bingham staunchly denied this account. President sailed to New York City, and Little Belt went to Halifax, Nova Scotia. The two nations continued to argue about how the battle began for several months. Joseph Cartwright (1789? - 1829), marine painter, was apparently a native of Dawlish in Devonshire, and was attached to the navy in a civil capacity. When the Ionian Islands came into the possession of the English, he was appointed paymaster-general of the forces at Corfu, which post he held for some years. On his return to England he published a volume entitled ‘Views in the Ionian Islands,’ and henceforth devoted himself to art, and especially to painting marine subjects and naval engagements. He exhibited many pictures at the Royal Academy, the British Institution, and the Society of British Artists, and obtained a great reputation in his particular line. In 1825 he was elected a member of the Society of British Artists, and in 1828 he was appointed marine painter to H.R.H. the Duke of Clarence, lord high admiral of England Ships captioned below inscription, with numbers of guns and men recorded. The squadron was to be ready for combat at sea, to blockade ports between Cape Verde and Benguela if necessary, to seize foreign slavers, and to protect legitimate traders. The Journal du Havre publishes the following report on the capture of the Gabriel, communicated by Captain Blay, of the Jeune Pauline, just arrived at Havre from Rio Janeiro:- ' The following was published in Edinburgh Oct/Nov, 1841. The English brig Acorn having, in lat. 5.N perceived at great distance a vessel pillaging another, made chase, and instantly the Gabriel hoisted all her sail, and endeavoured to escape. At three in the afternoon the Acorn fired, and the Gabriel returned the fire, at the same time hoisting Portuguese colours. The chase continued for 12 hours, during the whole of which time firing was kept up by both vessels, but eventually the Gabriel was dismasted, and captured. She was sent to St Helena, but her crew, consisting of fifty- eight men, Spaniards and others, were put on board an English vessel at Rio. The captain jumped overboard during the chase, with all his papers. The merchandise found on board the Gabriel was valued at 8000 pounds. The Acorn had not time to

ascertain to what country the vessel which was being pillaged by the Gabriel belonged, but she carried English colours. Captain Blay also reports that the English merchants resident at Rio have presented Captain Lecosannet, of the Roland, with a handsome gold chronometer and snuff box, and given to each of his crew a hundred francs, in testimony of the sense entertained of their humanity in saving the crew and passengers of the India. Captain Richard Budd Vincent (1770?-1831) was given command of the Arrow in 1802 and spent a year in the English Channel before being sent to the Mediterranean. By 1804 the Arrow was in bad shape, with rotting timbers, so she was sent home from Malta accompanying some merchant ships. When the two much larger French ships came across the convoy Vincent got his ship in between, allowing all but two of the convoy to escape. However both the Arrow and Acheron were lost. The court-martial on Vincent, standard practice when a captain lost his ship, not only ‘most honourably acquitted’ him, but pronounced his conduct ‘highly meritorious and praiseworthy. sky to upper right. Both trimmed to plate with tatty extremities. Old ink signiture in title area. £1650 By 1811 Napoleon controlled most of the mainland coast of the Adriatic. Britain however controlled the small island of Lissa (now Vis), near Split. Lissa was being used as a base by smugglers infiltrating British goods into Europe in defiance of Napoleon's Continental System, and by privateers preying on the coastwise trade. It was also the base of a small British squadron, likewise there to disrupt trade and communications. The island was thus a thorn in Napoleon's flesh in the eastern Mediterranean. A mixed flotilla of French and Venetian frigates commanded by Commodore Dubordieu, together with troops and transports approached the island with a view to invading and occupying it. A British frigate flotilla commanded by Capt. William Hoste intercepted the expedition and drove it off. A french frigate squadron led by Commodore Bernard Dubourdieu and based at Ancona had attempted to take Lissa the previous autumn, but had failed, having insufficient troops. Early in 1811, 500 additional Italian troops had been assigned, and Dubourdieu's squadron, with the associated transports, had sailed from Ancona on 11th March.
