Our readings today could be seen as a simple recipe for right liv-ing. In the Hebrew Bible, hospitality is regarded as one of the highest virtues. Conditions were harsh, and when people received guests or strangers, they washed their feet, provided a meal, and offered shelter if they could. In Second Kings, a woman’s gener-osity is rewarded with the prospect of a child. In Romans we are called to recognize our baptism in Christ. We are called to be “dead to sin, and living in Christ Jesus.” In the Gospel passage from Saint Luke, Jesus bids us to take up our cross, and to receive others as if we were receiving Christ. Put them together, and all of them are a call to see the holy, to see God in others, and to live our lives in Christ.

On first reading, our Gospel seems very harsh. The idea of taking up our cross can be fearful or have negative connotations, as if it were something only a few can do. It is also confusing. Scripture tells us to honor our father and mother, and yet here are told we must love Jesus more than our parents or children, or we are not worthy. The message that Jesus intends to convey, however, is not to give up these people, but rather to choose Christ first. Sometimes this means being countercultural. For a family, how do we make choices to keep Christ in the picture? It could mean that when you make plans to take the family to that water park for the weekend, you should also locate the local church so you can attend Mass. Or maybe it means not placing your child on the soccer team with 10 a.m. Sunday games, or rescheduling another part of your life to keep Christ foremost. Perhaps it is something as simple as locking yourself in the bathroom for five minutes so that you have time to pray. Maybe it means listening to an audio-book of scriptures on your commute to work. All we do is for naught if we do not include Christ.

Don’t get caught up in taking this scripture literally. Yes, you may give someone a glass of water, invite the staff of your parish for a meal, hand an apple or a dollar bill to a homeless person, or take a shift in a shelter. But sometimes, what is being asked for is simply a kind word or a helping hand. Seeing an elderly person having trouble and helping them through the crosswalk, calming someone’s toddler in the grocery store while they pay their bill. Offer a smile, a compliment, or a word of encouragement. Say hello to a stranger. We do not know who is parched with loneli-ness or feeling overwhelmed. Look for the Christ in others and respond with simple kindness and hospitality.

Music Ministry The last several months have been unprecedented for all of us in so many ways. Our daily lives have been turned upside down due to the coronavirus, and our music ministry, too, has been affected. As soon as we entered the period of quarantine, all of our music ministries were suspended. Since the Third Sunday of Lent (March 15), we have been celebrating Mass without choirs, cantors, or instrumentalists. I’ve been leading the music alone, as part of our live stream and now as we begin having public gatherings for Sunday Mass, I will continue lead-ing the music by myself for the time being. I am grateful for all those who participate in our music ministry, and I am disappointed that we have had to cut our time short this season due to COVID-19. I hope that all who have been faithful members of music ministry for so many years will rejoin when our programs are able to safely resume. So when we will have cantors and choirs back for Sunday Mass? The answer right now, the best I can say is I don’t know. Most of the guidelines that the Church is adhering to right now, strongly discourage choirs. Vigorous singing contrib-utes 6x the amount of aerosol particles in the air, which can very easily spread virus. I’m hopeful as we successfully return to public Mass on Sunday, I can use the cantors and instrumen-talists along with myself to lead music. When we do this, we will do so observing social distancing and other precautions. So we will wait and see, and pray for the best as we resume Sunday Mass. May God bless you and keep you safe.

LIVE THE LITURGY—INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK

Un Momento de Décimo Tercer Domingo del Corresponsabilidad Tiempo Ordinario

Religious Freedom Week For the Good of All

Join us, June 22— June 29 as we pray, reflect, and take action on religious

liberty, both here in this country and abroad.

Everyday Stewardship— RECOGNIZE GOD IN YOUR ORDINARY MOMENTS

How does your commitment to Jesus Christ affect your life? Our faith is not just a private affair but something that influences all of our relationships. Our baptism brings us into a very intimate relationship with God and makes us a brother or a sister to all of God's children. That identity we share colors how we relate to them and the level of responsibility we have to them. If we open ourselves to truly receive our God as Father and those with whom we journey as brothers and sisters, it can profoundly change and affect us. How has your baptism changed you?

As the baptized, we are called into community, and we are strongest when all members have full faith in Jesus Christ. When one of us falters or begins to doubt his or her faith, that is when our faith is to be shared freely as a source of strength. If we hold our faith inside, then those around us will miss a chance to be edified and strengthened by our witness. We can give freely of our money, our time, and our talents but still not share our faith with those around us. This hinders the Body of Christ's ability to evangelize and spread the Good News. It also helps to keep members of that Body weak, because without the chance to hear our stories of faith, those with the need to hear can remain discouraged and lost. Faith is a gift from God to us, just like any other. We are called to cultivate our faith and grow it into abundance. If we do not share it with others, then why grow it at all? We are not saved because we have more faith than someone else. We are no better off with storage bins filled with knowledge, devotion, and faith experience than a baby on its day of baptism. The difference between the baby and us is that we have some-thing now to share and the responsibility to do so. -Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS

Sunday Gospel Reflection by Bishop Parkes Sunday, June 28, 2020 Loving God above all things

Children often ask their parents, “who do you love more, me or him.” Or, “Which of your children do you love the most?” During an argument they might exclaim in anger or defiance, “You’ve always loved them more than me!” Of course, this isn’t true, but it’s what they might be-lieve.

In reading this Sunday’s Gospel from Saint Matthew, on the surface, we might note a rather difficult parallel. Jesus states that whoever loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me and what I have to give. Same with loving a son or daughter more than me. He adds, “whoever does not take up his cross and follow after me is not worthy of me.” We know the phrase, “Jesus is Love” but hearing it in this context might give one pause. After all, what parent would not do anything to save his or her son or daughter? It is always a difficult situation when a parent loses a child and blames or asks, “If God loves me, why would He do this to me?”

We are called to love God in all times and situations with all our mind, heart, and soul. Parents, despite all of their goodness, are also sinful creatures and can occasionally be misled. This world is passing but heaven is eternal, as is God’s love for us.

There are many temptations in life and to live a true life in Christ, there must be self-denial of these things. God cannot be outdone in generosi-ty and selfless love. After all, He gave His only Son to be our Savior. I’m not saying not to love your parents, children, friends or other things. The priority must be God above all things – particularly passing things. Do you have that courage to open your heart to be filled with God’s eter-nal love, and then to share it with others? Pray for that grace today.

Bishop Gregory Parkes

The Catholic Church encourages the

“practice of merciful love,” offering as a guide the corporal works of mercy, charita-ble acts for the common good and basic hu-

man welfare. These actions are rooted in our love for the Lord, and as Jesus tells us, knowing that whatever we do for the most vulnerable among us we do for Him. Pantry Hours: Thursday & Friday 9— 11:30 am For assistance Contact (813)949-6094

ABOUT THE CATHOLIC FAITH

If you want to . . . ♦be on a Spiritual Journey ♦be Baptized ♦Join the Church ♦become Catholic ♦receive Communion with your spouse and/or family ♦received Confirmation & Eucharistas a Baptized Catholic

If any of these apply, RCIA is just what you need! The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (R.C.I.A.) is the process for initi-ating adults into the Sacramental Life of the Catholic Church. It is a process designed for adults who have never been bap-tized or who have been baptized in other Christian faiths who are seeking full communion with the Catholic Church. The process includes four periods, three major rites:

1. Pre-Catechumenate (Inquiry Process) 2. Catechumenate 3. Full Initiation 4. Mystagogy (Action)

Other rituals also mark a person’s journey toward faith and full initiation into the Catholic Church.

RCIA is Not just for those who want to be Cathol ic . This program is a powerful way to enter into a new lever of learning the True Richness and Teachings of the Catholic Church. If you are already practicing or want to return back to restore your Catholic Faith, the RCIA process can be a great way to restart the fire of the Holy Spirt in your heart. The fullness of Life comes through faith. The relationship you have with your heavenly Father, His Son, Jesus, and the Holy Spirt is through faith and is given as a free gift from God for those who choose to follow.

If today you hear the voice of GOD, harden not your hearts!

Please Call!

“Inquiry” is a period of spiritual discovery to help an individual understand that the Catholic Faith is a life-long pursuit to build a

strong relationship with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

MAKING A SPIRITUAL COMMUNION BY FATHER RON AUBIN

If for whatever reason, you are not able to attend Mass and receive Jesus in Holy Communion, then I encourage you to make a spiritual communion, or better yet, make your entire day a spiritual communion with Jesus. There are several web sites, listed below, that explain how to do just that. But my favorite prayer for maintaining a spiritu-al communion with Jesus is the Prayer of Saint Patrick, also known as the Breastplate of Saint Patrick: https://www.ourcatholicprayers.com/st-atricksbreastplate.html I’ve adapted this prayer to suit my own spiritual needs and my version goes something like this:

Christ be with me, within in me, before me, behind me, beneath me, above me.

Christ be on my right, and on my left. Christ be in my heart, in my mind, in my soul, and in every fiber of my

being. Christ be in my thoughts, in my words, and in my actions.

Christ be in my eyes (what I see), my ears (what I hear), on my lips (what I say),

in my hands (what I do) and in my feet (where I go). Christ be in my sleeping, in my waking, and in all my doing.

I love Jesus, be with me today, that I might be with you forever.

Prayer for Protection During Hurricane Season

O God, Master of this passing world, hear the hum-ble voices of your children. The Sea of Galilee

obeyed Your order and returned to its former quietude.

You are still the Master of land and sea. We live in the shadow of a dan-ger over which we have no control: the Gulf, like a provoked and angry giant, can awake from its seeming lethargy, overstep its conventional

boundaries, invade our land, and spread chaos and disaster.

During this hurricane season we turn to You, O loving Father. Spare us from past tragedies whose memories are still so vivid and whose

wounds seem to refuse to heal with passing of time. O Virgin, Star of the Sea, Our beloved Mother, we ask you to plead with your Son on our behalf, so that spared from the calamities common to this area and animated with a true spirit of gratitude, we will walk in the footsteps of your Divine Son to reach the heavenly Jerusalem, where a

stormless eternity awaits us. Amen.

ARE YOU REGISTERED

Did you know that demographic studies estimate that more than 1/3 of all Catholics are not registered in a parish? Although you may attend Mass on a regular basis, unless we have a registration form our records will not show you as a registered member. Please encourage your friends and family to register. Registering is important because: If a parish doesn’t know who is out there, how can it ade-quately serve the needs of all– especially singles, divorced or young families who may not see the need to register. Registered parishioners receive helpful information about the parish. Registration is needed to obtain Baptism/ Confirmation sponsor form. Registering is easy. Registration forms are available in the parish office, the welcome center and on the parish website.

We understand this will be a most distressing time for all families. However we are still called to support the work of our parish and Diocese. So we continue to ask all those who are able to financially support either our Annual Pastoral Appeal or parish offertory, please do so. The need is great. We sincerely thank all those who have gone above and beyond our expecta-tions to support Our Lady of the Rosary Parish!

It has been a rocky road we’ve all traveled these past 2 months. However, Our Lady of the Ro-sary is blessed with many very generous parish-ioners. We truly thank all those who gave above and beyond their normal offertories—and there were many of you who gave an extra $1,000 2,000 even $10,000 to help us. Fr Ron was able to bring most staff back because of your generous response and we thank you. All our bills can be paid. We don’t know what the future will bring, but we know we will get through it with you and Our Lord Jesus! Thank you once again for your generous support of Stewardship at OLOR!
