401RichmondInternshipUrbanspacePropertyGroupisseekinganexceptionalundergraduatecandidatetoworkwiththeorganizationinthesummerof2021.Theorganizationiseagertoconnectwithstudentsfromanycourseofstudywhoarepassionateabouturbanplanning,creativespace-making,architecture,designandtheUrbanspacePropertydevelopmentmission.Briefdescriptionoforganization:UrbanspacePropertyGroupownsandoperates401RichmondStreetWest,aheritage-designatedbuildingindowntownTorontosince1994.Asamission-drivendeveloperandpropertymanager,UrbanspacePropertyGroup'sinitiativesaredirectedtowardthepreservationandrestorationofhistoricandarchitecturallysignificantspaces.Theoverallgoalistoadaptivelyreuseoldbuildingstoprovidecommercialopportunitiesforcreative,non-profitandinnovationsectors.Urbanspaceincorporatessustainablebuildingeffortsandacommitmenttoenvironmentallysoundpracticesintherestoration,operation,andmaintenanceofitsproperty.The401Richmondcomplexprovidesspaceforartists’,galleries,filmfestivals,charities,not-for-profits,magazines,architects,theatregroupsanddesignfirmsandfostersthedevelopmentofaninspiringintegrationofcommerce,culture,andcommunity.Thebuilding’srenewal,morethan25yearsago,wasinspiredbyauthorJaneJacobs’observationthat“newideasneedoldbuildings”andtheimportanceofdiversityandmixed-usesinthecity.Descriptionofplacement:Weareundertakingaresearchinitiativeaimedatcapturinganimportantnarrativeconnectedtothecontributionofthe401RichmondfacilityasaculturalinfluenceinTorontoandbeyond.Seengenerallyasaresearchandarchivinginitiativeaimedatcapturinganowfleetinghistoricalnarrative,theprojectwillalsoservetoprovideaplatformonwhichfutureandongoinganalysisof401Richmond’sactivitycanbeconducted.Thisinitiativecanbebroadlydescribedasananalysisofhistory,philosophyandarchitectureasitrelatestotheactivitiesandtenancyof401RichmondStreet.Currently,thereisadearthofdocumentationthatpreservesthenarrativeofthe401RichmondcontributiontoToronto’sculturallife.Itisanticipatedthatthisinitiativewouldfunctionasalivingarchivewithadynamic,media-richandsearchableonlinedatabaseasakeycomponent.Tasksandresponsibilitiesoftheplacementmayinclude:• Conductinghistoricalandpresent-dayresearcharoundthefunctionandimpactof401RichmondStreetWestasaculturalhubandcreativecatalyst;

• Undertaketheexaminationandcontextualizationoforganization’sarchivalmaterials,anddatafromothersourcessuchaspressitems,relatedtothegeneralhistoryandrecordoftenancyat401Richmondinanefforttocreateadetailed,content-richtimelineofthefacility’sevolution;

• Developandimplementaninterviewstrategythatwillengageformerandcurrenttenantsalongwithselectexternalstakeholderswiththepurposeofcapturinguniquenarrativethatevidencestheimportanceof401Richmondascommunitycontributorandnexus;

• Utilizetextualandmultimediaapproachestocapturingnarrativematerial,whichwillbecomeafoundationcomponentofadedicatedwebsitepresence;

• Assistinthedevelopmentofadedicatedwebsiteincludingconceptualizationofitsarchitectureandnavigationalongwithcontentarchiving.

Virtualteammeetingswilltakeplaceweekly,andthecandidatewillworkinconsultationwiththeorganization’sCurator,SpecialProjects,whowillalsoprovideongoingsupportparticularlyasliaisonwithtenantsandstakeholders.SpecialRequirementsforastudentplacedinthisorganization:Currently,theopportunityislargelyexpectedtotakeplaceremotelywiththepossibilityofoccasionalsitevisitsaspermittedbyprovincialpandemicguidelines.Timingorhoursofplacement:8-10hoursperweek/12weeks.

ACONextGenCommunicationsInternshipTheACONextGenisseekingastudentinterntocontributetoouroutreachinitiatives,assistwithprogramming,andleadtheirownresearchproject.Briefdescriptionoforganization:ACONextGenisagroupwithintheArchitecturalConservancyofOntario(ACO)dedicatedtostudentsandemergingprofessionalswhoshareaninterestinhistoricarchitectureandconservation.Since2011,NextGenhasledaseriesofprogramsandeventsforourmembers,includingourannualDesignCharretteandJobShadowProgram,OntarioHeritageConferencesponsorships,NextGenAwards,pubnights,buildingtoursandlectures.TheACOisacharitableorganizationoperatingthroughanetworkofautonomouslocalbranchesincommunitiesacrossOntario.ACOhasbeeninvolvedinpreservingOntario’sarchitecturalandenvironmentalheritagesince1933byhelpingcommunitiesandownerspreservestructuresofarchitecturalmerit,andplacesofnaturalbeautyorinterest.Descriptionofplacement:Weareconstantlyseekingtoreachmorestudentsandemergingprofessionalswiththegoalofhelpingthemintheircareersandcreatinginterestandawarenessoftheimportanceofheritagepreservation.Theinternwillhelpusreachnewmembersthroughsocialmedia,programming,andwillhavetheopportunitytocreateandleadtheirownprojectsbasedontheirinterests.Thisisanopportunitytolearnaboutworkingatanon-profit,understandthemainplayersintheheritagesector,andspendtimeresearching,writing,andpublishingabouttheirtopicsofinterest.TheinternwillreportdirectlytotheACONextGenChairandworkinconsultationwiththeACONextGenOutreachDirector,meetingregularlytodiscusswork.Theinternshouldhavestrongwritingskills,graphicdesignskills(forsocialmedia),andaninterestinheritage,history,orarchitecture.Theyshouldbeabletoworkindependentlyandtakeinitiative.Weareflexibleinworkingwiththeinterestsoftheintern.Outreach:

• AssistwithonlineoutreachandpromotionusingInstagramandFacebookbycreatingheritage-relatedposts,researchingnewsandjobopportunities.

• Contributetowebsiteredesignproject.Research

• Researchtopicsofchoicerelatedtoarchitecture,art,orheritage,inconsultationwithACONextGenExecutives,andsubmittingregulararticlestobepublishedontheACONextGenBlog.

• Researchorganizationsintheheritagesector.• ContributefindingstotheTOBuiltdatabase,ifrelevant.

Programming• AssistwiththeplanningandexecutionofNextGenprogrammingtoengagemembers,includingplanning

heritagewalkingtours,aspeakerseries,orNextGen’sannualCharrette.• AssistwiththedevelopmentofNextGenGroupsatprovincialbranches

SocietyfortheStudyofArchitectureinCanadaInternshipTheSocietyfortheStudyofArchitecture(SSAC)seeksastudentinterntohelporganizeitsfirstonlineannualconference.Briefdescriptionoforganization:TheSSACannualconferenceisadynamicforumthatbringstogetherhistorians,architects,professors,heritageprofessionals,andarchitecturalenthusiaststodiscussallaspectsoftheCanadianbuiltenvironment.Attheconference,awiderangeoftopicswillbeexploredusinghistoricalandcontemporaryapproachesatthescaleofthebuilding,cityandwiderlandscape.TheSSACisalearnedsocietyandregisteredcharitableorganizationdedicatedtothestudyoftheCanadianbuiltenvironment.Ithasavariedmembershipthatincludesstudents,historiansofarchitecture,architects,heritagepractitionersandculturalplanners.Foundedin1974,ithasencouragedthecollectionandpreservationofthecountry’sarchitecturalrecords,stimulatedandsupportedimportantscholarlypublication,and,throughbothitsmembersanditsJournal,hasfosteredtheunderstandingandpreservationofthebuiltenvironment.Descriptionofplacement:ThesuccessfulapplicantwillbesupervisedbyandworkcloselywiththeSSAC’sVPConference,andwilllearnthebasicsofeventplanningandgaininsightintotheday-to-dayrunningofanot-for-profitorganization.Theinternwillplayakeyroleinshapingtheconferenceandwillassistwithpost-conferenceactivities.Tasksmayinclude:

• Researchingand/orwritingand/orpodcastingbriefreportsonbuildingsand/orneighbourhoodsinCanada

• Preparingand/orleadingvirtualtoursofhistoricsitesinOntario• Writingbriefbookreviews• Preparingandconductinginterviewswitharchitects,historians,and/orconferencepresenters• ContributingtotheSSACnewsletter• Promotingtheconferenceonsocialmedia

ThesuccessfulapplicantwillbeinvitedtoattendtheSSACconferenceandalleventsassociatedwithit,wheretheywillhavetheopportunitytonetworkwithprofessionalsfromavarietyofarchitecturalfields.Additionally,theinternwillreceiveallbenefitsofsocietymembershipforoneyear.SpecialRequirementsforastudentplacedinthisorganization:Theidealcandidatewouldbeabletodedicatealargeportionoftheirhours(uptoamaximumof120hours)inMay,astheconferencetakesplaceattheendofMay.Sometaskswillrequireattentionaftertheconference.

SpacingMagazineInternshipSpacingMagazineiswillingtohostahighlymotivatedstudentinterntoproducearticlesforpublication.Briefdescriptionoforganization:SpacingisoneofthemostuniquemagazinesonCanadiannewsstands.Themagazineuncoversthejoys,obstaclesandpoliticsofCanada’sbigcitiesbycuttingthroughthecynicismthatoftenpervadesanydiscussionabouturbanissues.Spacingpushesreaderstothinkcriticallyabouthowtheycanshapethepublicspacesthatsurroundtheireverydaylives.Spacing.caishometoregularfeatures,opinionwriting,andpodcasts.Since2016,Spacinghaspublishedeightbooksonarangeoflocaltopics.Descriptionofplacement:Duringthecourseoftheinternship,thestudentwouldresearchandwriteontopicspertinenttoSpacing’smandate.Theeditorisopentoideas,buttopicsofinterestincludethemissing-middle,housing,thesuburbs,modernism,urbanism,andheritage.Theidealcandidatewouldcomepreparedwithideasforarticles,andwouldproduceatotalofthreearticlesforpublication,undertheguidanceofoneortwoofSpacing’seditors.*Pleaseincludepotentialideasforarticlesinyourapplication.Ifthestudenthasexperiencewithpodcasting,thereisthepossibilitythattheycouldcontributetooneofSpacing’spodcasts.Timingorhoursofplacement:Hoursperweekcanbeflexible,andwouldbedividedupacrosstheproductionofthethreearticles(uptoamaximumof120hours).

TOBuiltInternshipTheArchitecturalConservancyofOntario(ACO)islookingforaninterntocontributetotheirTOBuiltdatabase’songoingprojectdocumentingthecity’smissingmiddlearchitecture.Briefdescriptionoforganization:TheroleoftheACOhasbeentosetthestageforconservationadvocacythroughpubliceducation.Ourpublicinformationeffortshaveevolvedfrompubliceventsandpublishingbooksandmagazines,todevelopmentofourmostsignificantresearchprojecttodate:TOBuilt,apubliclyaccessibleonlinedatabase.TOBuiltoffersameansofrecordingallpropertyinToronto,includingphotographs,research,drawings,andlinkstoother,externalsourcesofinformation.Thedatabaseisopensourceandprovidesanopportunityforanyonewithinformationtoshareitwithothers.Wehopethatconsolidatingcommunityresearchwillfacilitateprotectionforfuturegenerations!Descriptionofplacement:Internshipresponsibilitieswouldincludephotographing,researchinganddocumentingpre-warlow-riseapartmentbuildings,duplexes/triplexes,convertedmansionsandotherbuildingswhichrepresentadistinctbuildingtypologydesignedtosensitivelyincreasedensitywhilemaintaininganeighbourhood’scharacter.Internswillbejoiningateamofheritageresearchers,workingalongsidecityheritageplannersandconsultants.Thisisanexcellentopportunityforstudentsinterestedinhistoricarchitecture,heritageandurbanplanning!ThestudentinternmayalsohaveopportunitiestoparticipateinandengagewithotherACOoperations.SpecialRequirementsforastudentplacedinthisorganization:Whilemostoftheinternshipwouldtakeplaceremotely,theidealcandidatewouldbebasedinTorontoinordertoassistwithphotographingTorontobuildings.Timingorhoursofplacement:8-10hoursperweek/12weeks.

InternshipscourseoverviewCoursecode:FAH481H/Y1Prerequisites:Applicantsshouldbeenteringtheirthird-orfourth-yearofstudyintheFall.Term:2021SummerSession(beginsMay2021)Totalhours:96-120(note:thedurationmayvarydependingonthespecificprojectsandindiscussionwiththepartnerorganization;seeindividualpostingforweeklyexpectations)Courserequirements:Gradedonapass/failbasis,theinternshipcourseofferstheopportunityforadvancedstudentstoreceivecreditforworkwithanarts-basedorganization.Mostinternshipswillbeforonesemesteronly;themaximumamountofcreditpossibleforaninternshipisonefullcredit.Duringthecourse,thestudentwillberequiredtocheckinperiodicallywithanacademicadvisortoassessstudentlearning.Attheendoftheplacement,thestudentwillalsoberequiredtosubmita3-5pagesummary(preferablywithimages)ofactivitiesandskillsacquiredtotheDirectorofUndergraduateStudies.Thesummarymustbesubmittednolaterthanthelastdayofclassesofthesemesterinwhichtheinternshiptakesplace.
