A message from The Hon. Stockwell Day,Minister of International Trade and

Minister for the Asia-Pacifi c Gateway, Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada

Both Canada and Russia recognize that nanotechnology underpins innovation, and therefore future prosperity. Canada’s nanotechnology expertise is driving research and development in sectors ranging from imaging to communications to construction. In addition, Canada offers great opportunities to commercialize these developments, positioning us as an excellent destination for international investment.

We hope this visit can serve to broaden our mutual cooperation. We wish participants every success.

A message from The Hon. Sandra Pupatello,Ontario Minister of International Trade and Investment

I would like to welcome RUSNANO to Ontario. As Ontario’s Minister of International Trade and Investment, and Member of Provincial Parliament for Windsor West, I am particularly pleased to see progress in a joint venture between RUSNANO and the Institute for Diagnostic Imaging Research (IDIR). This gathering provides an opportunity to advance our relationships as we move forward into the exciting potential of nanotechnology. Scientifi c progress, innovation and economic development benefi t from international collaborations and partnerships like the ones being created this week.

A message from The Hon. John Wilkinson,Ontario Minister of Research and Innovation

Ontario is committed to world-class research and innovation. That’s what Ontario’s Innovation Agenda is all about: creating a higher quality of life, healthy communities and a strong economy that is driven by new ideas. Ontario is recognized for our world-class talent and transformational research. We are focused on collaborating and creating partnerships with international jurisdictions, in areas like nanotechnology.

Ontario welcomes you, and we welcome this opportunity to advance the kind of research and commercialization partnerships that we know will expand our knowledge, create exciting new jobs, and lead us towards the new breakthroughs and game-changing discoveries of the 21st century.

A message from The Hon. Tony Clement, Minister of Industry

I would like to welcome RUSNANO to Canada. We are proud to host you and hope that you fi nd the next few days constructive and benefi cial. I would also like to acknowledge and congratulate the University of Windsor and the Institute for Diagnostic Imaging Research for hosting this workshop. Our government has placed a clear priority on the advancement of science, technology and innovation and I am encouraged by opportunities such as these that allow for dialogue between nations to occur on important scientifi c advances. I wish you all the best as you begin your programme!

A message from Mr. Anatoly Chubais,Director General and C…O, RUSNANO

On behalf of the Russian State Corporation of Nanotechnologies, I would like to extend my warm greetings to the participants of the fi rst Russian-Canadian nanotechnology workshop, which will discuss the prospects of our cooperation in the fi eld of nanotechnologies.

International cooperation in a globalized world is one of the keys to successful implementation of national nano-initiatives. It is especially important today, when the world is affected by the global economic crisis, which brought about serious reduction of funds available for research and development worldwide.

I am certain that this meeting will be one of the fi rst moves towards long-term and mutually benefi cial cooperation between the nano-communities of Russia and Canada. The focus of this meeting is to identify areas of shared interest and come up with a better understanding of each other’s priorities which would correctly guide our cooperation in this sphere.

My best wishes to all the participants of the meeting. Let it be successful and productive!

A message from Mr. Alexander Losyukov,Deputy Director General for International Cooperation, RUSNANO

I strongly hope that the fi rst Russia-Canada Workshop on Nanotechnology Cooperation will help us to identify areas of common interest, fi nd business partners, and lay the groundwork for durable and stable interaction to the benefi t of both sides. The primary mission of nanotechnologies as we see it is to upgrade the quality of human life.

Let our joint work contribute to creating a better world with prosperity and higher living standards for all.

A message from His Excellency Georgiy Mamedov, Ambassador of the Russian Federation

It is my great pleasure to greet the participants of the Canada-Russia Nanotechnology Week!

Signifi cant worldwide advance of this important sphere of pure and applied science has already started to positively affect the lives of much of humankind. There is no doubt that combined efforts by Russian and Canadian scientists and entrepreneurs would add to the competitiveness of our respective countries.

Let me wish every success to all your endeavours!

RUSNANO was established under Russian Federation Law in September, 2007. The mission of RUSNANO is to advance Russia into the pool of the world‘s leaders in the fi eld of nanotechnologies. The organization is a state-run corporation, with the main task of supporting and advancing the nanotech industry in Russia. RUSNANO acts as a venture investor in nanotechnology-based projects. The Corporation has about 130 Billion rubles (approximately $5 Billion US) under management, provided solely by the Russian Government. The priority of RUSNANO is commercialization of nanotechnology projects with high business potential and/or social benefi t.

RUSNANO acts as a venture investor in nanotechnology-based projects. Its fi nancial contribution in early-stage technology companies reduces risks borne by its partners – private investors. The Russian Corporation of Nanotechnologies invests in start-ups at the initial commercialization stage when attracting private capital is diffi cult. The Corporation’s main instrument is an equity investment. It also can provide investment loans, make loan guarantees and facilitate leasing for its partners. In the vast majority of its companies the Corporation holds a minority share (under 50%) leaving the rest to founders and private capital in order to ensure that the project is realized with maximum effi ciency. The Corporation does not aim to maximize its profi t and is ready to exit once the private capital is able to carry out the project on its own.

RUSNANO focuses on projects with high commercial potential or wide social benefi t. The Corporation supports only the most competitive projects. RUSNANO organizes the scientifi c, technical and investment due diligence at its own expense. The Corporation takes part in long-term investment projects lasting up to 10 years and provides administrative support to its partners. The Corporation is open for cooperation with any Russian and/or foreign public or private organization in order to achieve the goals as set forth above.

Dr.Sc., Professor,

Honourary Consul of the Russian Federation in Ontario (Windsor), Canada

The idea of the Canada-Russia Nanotechnology Week was suggested in the fall of 2008. After six months of preparation, we are able to bring you several business meetings and a workshop, which assembles a group of distinguished speakers from both countries. Senior representatives from the Russian State Corporation of Nanotechnology (RUSNANO) will outline for the workshop participants the strategic direction of nanotechnology development in Russia. The workshop program gives both Canadian and Russian participants an opportunity to learn about nanotechnology’s achievements, trends and strategic priorities in the fi eld. I know that this Week will provide each participant a valuable and rare insider’s view on the potential opportunities for building long-term international collaboration between our two countries in this exciting area of research, development and commercialization. I truly believe in the signifi cant potential presented in this endeavour.
