    The exact procedure to reset root password differes in different OS and in Unix itesentially involves booting with OS CD in standalone mode and then editing thepasswd or shadow file to remove the password entry .

    To reset root pasword you have to have physical access to the system , OS CD and aCD drive inthe machine :

    Follow the following procesdure to reset pasword in Solaris system :----------------------------------------------------------------

    Press stop A or ctrl -Break to get to the ok> promptat the ok promp type boot cdrom -s

    OK>boot cdrom -s t

    System will boot from CD and you will get # prompt

    at # prompt

    #fsck -F ufs -y /dev/dsk/c0t0d0s0

    #mount /dev/dsk/c0t0d0s0 /a

    #cd /a

    #cd /a/etc/

    #vi shadow

    root:nxhd907jcdccds:0:3:system root:/:/sbin/sh

    --- remove everything in between first : and second : , don't remove the :

    root::0:3::/:/sbin/sh

    Force save and quit with following command .

    :wq!

    Reboot your system and root will be now without password. Change password once youlog in .
