Country Specific Guide- Porto, Portugal Known as the capital of the north, Porto is Portugal's second largest city and a thriving industrial centre, successfully blending commercial efficiency with an atmosphere of unpretentious charm. Rich from centuries of trade, modern Porto is as much a cosmopolitan centre as it is a city steeped in the historical events of the past. Magnificently situated on the great gorge of the River Douro, which spills into the Atlantic after its scenic 927 km journey from Spain, the 'granite city' is best known for its striking bridges and the much celebrated Port wine, which is stored and savoured by wine lovers all over the world. Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in December 1996, the ancient Ribeira riverside district is a warren of narrow, twisting streets and shadowy arches. The ongoing restoration of this lively quarter is attracting a growing number of restaurants, bars and nightclubs. Crossing the spectacular two tiered Dom Luís bridge brings you to Vila Nova da Gaia, the true home of Port wine. Here, visitors can tour the world famous cellars, which bear such familiar household names as Taylor's, Grahams, Cockburns and Sandeman. The neighbour fishing towns of Matosinhos and Leça da Palmeira to the north of the city boast some of the best fish and seafood restaurants in Portugal.

The weather in Porto is typical of Atlantic regions: damp but temperate, with colder nights. In Winter, it may rain quite a lot, but

it never snows, as the temperatures never fall below 0 ºC. In Summer, temperatures rise and the warmest months are June,

July and August, when temperatures vary between 20 ºC and 35 ºC. September, October, April and May are intermediate, with

periods of atmospheric instability: quite frequently foggy mornings are replaced by sunny afternoons, or rain showers alternate

with periods of bright sunshine. You are therefore advised to bring some warm clothes for the colder days.

Universidade Do Porto Application to the ERASMUS programme The University of Porto has implemented a new Application procedure for Incoming Mobility Students. All Application Forms MUST be submitted online. Therefore no paper documents and forms have to be sent to the International Office.

All students selected by their Home University, who intend to spend a period of studies at the U.Porto have to register online in order to get the username and password needed to access the Application Form. For a more effective and easier way to fill the Application, we recommend students to organize all the information with the responsible for the mobility at the Home Institution, before accessing the Application Form. The Application Form should be completed online and submitted, then printed, signed by the student and the Erasmus Coordinator, stamped and upload. Please note that submitting the Application Form does not guarantee a place as a mobility student of the U.Porto. All foreign mobility students are officially accepted only upon the confirmation with Letter of Acceptance by the U.Porto. The application form/Learning Agreement must be signed by the student, and both Local or/and Institutional Coordinators of the Home University. For detailed information about the Academic Calendar, course programmes, the ECTS guide and dates of the exams, please consult the Education Offer of each Faculty. The website contains detailed information on the degrees taught and on the ECTS credits allocated (refer to "Degrees"). You can also contact directly the Faculty of interest. The contact details of the Faculties are also available online, on the same page.

Please note that almost all courses of the University of Porto are taught in Portuguese. Therefore, we recommend students to have some preparation of Portuguese before travelling to Porto. Some teachers may allow students to write assignments and take exams in other languages, namely in English, but this situation can only be agreed upon arrival in each individual case. The deadline to submit applications is:

Applications to the 1st semester: 15 June

Applications to the academic year: 15 June

Applications to the 2nd semester: 30 November

Please remember that, should you fail to attend classes as from the first day, you should arrive at least up to the second week

after the classes start

Transcript of Records

Students should upload the "Transcript of Records" together with the Application Form.

The Transcript of Records is a certificate where all courses taken are listed, alongside the corresponding ECTS credits, the

national or local credits (if applicable), the grades obtained according to the national scale and, if possible, the ECTS grades

awarded. This document, which is a pre-requisite of the ECTS rules passed by the European Commission, is part of your

application. Therefore, we cannot officially accept your application if this document is not included.

Fees

The LLP-Erasmus programme assume fee waiving at the host institution, including fees due to registration, exams, access to

laboratories and libraries.

Therefore, this is applicable to all foreign students spending a period of studies at the U.Porto within the scope of the LLP-

Erasmus programme and Cooperation Agreements. Mobility students are nonetheless responsible for small charges, such as

school insurance, accommodation, Portuguese course, photocopies, laboratory materials.

Language Training

Before leaving to Porto foreign students are advised to learn Portuguese, although this is not a pre-requisite. However, most

course units are taught in Portuguese; besides, learning a foreign language is one of the greatest advantages of mobility

programmes - in this case this is an opportunity to learn the third most spoken European language in the world (about 200

million speakers).

Although most partner Institutions offer Portuguese language courses to their students (providing them with basic Portuguese

language skills before their departure to Portugal), the U.Porto organises, at the Faculty of Arts, several language courses.

Students are advised to obtain further information on these courses as soon as possible, so as to arrive before the beginning

of the language course.

Foreign students of the U.Porto can chose from two intensive Portuguese language courses, in September and in February.

The course has the duration of 60 hours. In the end, students with a pass shall be awarded a certificate. A minimum of 8

people is necessary for the course to take place. Although the course fee is below the real cost of the course, LLP-

Erasmus students are entitled to a discount in their enrolment.

In July a Summer course of Portuguese Language and Culture for Foreigners is also organised at the Faculty of Arts. This

course is divided into 4 levels (beginners, elementary, intermediate and advanced). Some guided tours are included.

The Faculty of Arts also organises every year a Course of Portuguese Language and Culture for Foreigners. This course takes

place in October and July and is divided into five levels (beginners, elementary, intermediate, advanced and proficient). This

course includes some study visits intended to complement work carried out in classes and to provide students with some

social and cultural background.

Further information regarding these courses can be obtained at the FLUP, or by the e-mail [email protected].

Registration Upon their arrival in Porto foreign students should proceed to the registration at the University of Porto (both at the International Office and at the Faculty), so as to be registered as foreign student of the U.Porto, as well as at the Immigration Office (Serviço de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras). When you get to Porto, you should go to the International Office of the University as soon as possible to carry out the respective administrative procedures and obtain useful documents and further information. There are pre-scheduled meetings so students can choose, before arrival, the day and hour to be receceived at the Rectorate

You should bring:

your ID card or passport;

a copy of your health insurance/CESD card or PB4 (in the case of Brazilian students) – or, should you not be entitled to any of these, a copy of a private insurance;

a copy of your study visa (if you come from a non-EU Member State);

a copy of of your Erasmus student contract (for Erasmus students only).

Upon your registration at the International Office, you will be given:

registration document so that you can proceed to your registration at the Faculty

further information on how to contact the responsible for the mobility at the Faculty;

further information on the University and on the city;

further information on ESN/Porto;

further information on your accommodation (if applicable);

international student mobility card of the U.Porto;

a SIM card for your mobile phone.

International Student Mobility Card of the U.Porto;

The International Student Card provides you with a range of advantages such as discounts in museums, cheaper transport passes, discounts in several services, preferential access to certain leisure services, travel discounts and discounts in books, cinemas and theatres, etc. The International Student Identity Card (ISIC) is also accepted in Portugal, but under certain circumstances a national card is preferable.

Besides these general advantages, the International Student Card of the U.Porto offers several internal advantages: access to University canteens, libraries and Faculty computers, University health services, sports activities, Student Unions and services they offer (bars, copy services, etc.). This card can also, if the student chooses this option, be used as a bank card.

Getting There

FRANCISCO SÁ-CARNEIRO AIRPORT: Located 11 km from Porto, in an important commercial and industrial area, Francisco Sá-Carneiro Airport is a modern infrastructure fully equipped to meet the demands of today’s air traffic. AEROBUS: Bus lines to the centre of the city: 601; 87; 76.

METRO:

Line D - Hospital de S. João - João de Deus

“Metro” line to ISCAP: The closest station to ISCAP is Hospital de S. João Station. An overflow in Trindade Station (City

Centre) is required. After going from the Airport Station to the Trindade Station change to line D (Yellow) and take the direction

of Hospital de S. João.

RAILWAY STATIONS:

Campanhã

Located in the eastern side of Porto, this railway station includes international services, the Alfa Pendular, services between

cities and regions, and Regional and Suburban services, which enables the connection to several destinations in the country

and abroad.

S. Bento

Located in the centre of the city, this railway station includes suburban and regional services, as well as services between

regions, which enables the connection to several destinations in the city. It also offers an international service to Vigo.

Getting Around STCP – Sociedade de Transportes Colectivos do Porto is responsible for managing public transportation services (bus) in the

urban and suburban area of Porto. Passengers should enter the bus by the front door and leave by the back door. To wait for

the bus at the bus stop, you need to queue by the stop sign and to the right. If you intend to use the bus occasionally, you should buy a ticket in advance. You can buy this ticket, know as "pré-comprado", at STCP shops (including Andante) shops, bookshops and newsstands. One ticket bought in advance costs 1.60 EUR and allows you to travel twice within the city of Porto (T1). A pack of 10 tickets to travel within this area (T1) costs 6.80 EUR. You can also purchase tickets from the bus driver, but the price is considerably higher: 1.30 EUR, which you can use only for that trip. If you intend to travel more often, you can also buy a monthly pass, which is available in several different options. A monthly pass which allows you to travel for an unlimited number of times within the city (A) costs 22.25 EUR. To have a monthly pass you need to buy in advance a card, which costs 5 EUR. Alternatively, you can use the Andante in any STCP bus. The urban and suburban area of Porto also has a light rail service, known as Metro do Porto. The Metro do Porto presently has 5 operational lines: Line A: Estádio do Dragão – Senhor de Matosinhos; Line B: Estádio do Dragão – Póvoa de Varzim; Line C: Estádio do Dragão – ISMAI; Line D: Hospital de S. João – João de Deus; Line E: Estádio do Dragão – Airport. The network of the Metro do Porto is growing gradually, so that two new lines are already planned: Line F: Belchior Robles – Casa da Música; Line G: Casa da Música – Santo Ovídio. To travel in Metro do Porto you need a ticket called Andante. Andante is a travel system which allows to travel with the same card (a magnetic card) in different means of transport (bus, light rail and train) of different companies (STCP buses, Metro do Porto, CP and other companies). This card is available in two versions and can be used for an indefinite amount of time: Andante Azul: blue paper card, without your ID, which is meant to be used occasionally. This card costs 0.50 EUR and may be topped-up with any number of trips in the stops of Metro do Porto, Andante shops andPayshop Agents. You may top-up the Andante Azul with single trips or tickets for regular travel such as daily tickets, called Andante 24. You can top-up your card with the number of trips you wish. The Andante also allows you to change the type of trips in your card: you may, for example, change from Andante Z2 (which allows you to travel in 2 zones) to Andante Z3 (which allows you to travel in 3 zones). However you can only make these changes when your ticket has run out of trips.

Andante Gold: this version of Andante, which costs 5.00 EUR, is aimed for frequent travellers. Andante Gold is a plastic

golden card which can be topped up with any type of Andante trips: monthly passes, Andante 10/16, single tickets and

Andante 24 (daily ticket). You can change the contents of your card anytime in Andante shops. You can also top it up in

Andante shops, STCP shops, Payshop agents and in the Multibanco network. As it is issued with your ID, the Andante Gold

can only be used by yourself.

If you use the Andante as a monthly pass, please note that you can only use it within the corresponding areas ("zonas"). If for example you study in Asprela and you have bought a monthly pass for zones C6 and C1, you can go from your Faculty to the Reitoria or even go shopping downtown. However, you cannot use your ticket to go to Foz and have a drink in a terrace, as Foz is a C2 zone. If, on the other hand, you have a blue Andante, the number of areas is flexible. This means that the number of areas you travel is counted from the place where you touch your Andante for the first time, and within one hour. The Andante single tickets, however, are only valid to travel within a ring of areas around a center point (the place where the ticket has first been validated), up to any stop within the range of rings allowed. To check the number of areas you are allowed to travel in is simple: you just have to take into account the place of your departure (where you have first validated your ticket). If you validate your ticket for the first time in area C1, you can travel with a Z2 single ticket to any of the areas that surround it. This means that you can travel within the area where you have first validated your ticket (area C1) and in the areas that make up the first ring (C2, C6 and S8). If, for example, you study in Asprela and go shopping in Santa Catarina you should use a Z2 ticket (as you will be travelling within two close areas, from C6 to C1). If you are quick, you can still travel to a terrace in Foz using the same Z2 ticket, since areas C6 (Asprela), C1 (downtown) and C2 (Foz) are also surrounding areas. On your way back, to travel directly from Foz to your Faculty you can use another Z2 ticket, since, although you departure from C2, go through C1 and your trip ends in C6, areas C2, C1 and C6 are close areas. A trip within the Z2 area costs 0.85 EUR, whereas a trip within Z3 costs 1.10 EUR. If you buy 10 trips, you will pay 8.50 EUR and 11.00 EUR to travel within zones Z2 and Z3, respectively. In this case, you will get a free trip. Z2 and Z3 tickets are valid for one hour, within the corresponding area, after you first touch your ticket. You must touch your ticket whenever you use public transports in Porto. Even though you will only pay for one trip within one hour, you have to touch your ticket every time you use a bus or metro. To touch the ticket, you must place your Andante close to the validator (less than 10 centimetres). A green light indicates that you have correctly touched it and you can go on board. You should touch your ticket at all times, even if you have a monthly pass. Transports within Portugal are mainly by land. Therefore bus services are available (bus companies), as well as railway (CP) all over the country. However, you can also travel by plane. There are regular flights to and from all the international airports, including Madeira and The Azores (TAP, Portugália, Aerocondor and SATA). Besides regular transports, you can also go on tours, both bus tours and boat trips (several types of cruises are available in different rivers). There are also helicopter tours.

Accommodation Temporary Accommodation Youth Hostels ([email protected]) and Camping Sites (+351 218 126 890) are two cost-effective types of accommodation in Portugal. They are particularly useful for short visits to Porto, either for tourism, on a trip to prepare a longer stay (e.g. for studying or doing research), or as a provisional accommodation. If you have a membership card of your national youth hostel or camping service, you can stay in any Portuguese Youth Hostel at cost-effective prices The youth hostel Pousada da Juventude in Porto ([email protected]) is located in Rua Paulo da Gama. The nearest camping sites are: Parque da Prelada (Rua Monte dos Burgos, Porto), Angeiras (20 Km from Porto), Medas (Gavinho, Gondomar - 30 Km from Porto), Solverde (Espinho 17 Km from Porto) and Marisol (Madalena, V. N. N. Gaia 10 Km from Porto). The IPJ - Instituto Português da Juventude, which is also responsible for managing the youth card and the youth hostels (+351 226 177 257), besides many other activities, publications and projects, provides assistance to young people. Existing tourism offices are able to provide a range of services and usual information. There are several tourism offices available in Porto. The main tourism office is located by the city hall, but there is another one by the river, in Vila Nova de Gaia (related to the Porto Convention Bureau), and yet another one in Praça do Infante. There is also a AICEP office in Praça D. João I. There are tourism information offices as well in the main railway stations and at the airport.

Long-Term Accommodation

The International Office seeks to provide all foreign students spending a period of studies at the U.Porto with assistance in

finding accommodation.

There are four types of accommodation:

in University halls of residence;

in a flat (sharing it with other students);

a room in a “family home”

temporary acommodation (youth hostel, other hostels).

The SASUP – Serviços de Acção Social da Universidade do Porto (Social Service of the University of Porto) provide

accommodation in Halls of Residence to some mobility students in 6 Halls of Residence. The International Office is

responsible for managing these vacancies, but they are very scarce considering the needs arising from the increase of

incoming flows.

Further to students’ requests the International Office also seeks to provide students with information of accommodation at

private houses, all over the city. To that purpose, the office manages an up-to-date database with contact details offering flats,

houses and rooms for rent. This database is provided to all students who may be interested, as well as to students who asked

(but were not awarded) accommodation in the Halls of Residence. Therefore, by means of this database, students may

establish direct contact with several accommodation offers and therefore select the opportunities that suit them most.

Campus Accommodation

Every year there is a limited number of rooms available for mobility students at the University halls of residence. Since this

number is far below the amount of requests, the International Office cannot guarantee that you will get this type of

accommodation.

If you were housed in a University hall of residence, you can go directly there (as far as this has been agreed upon), but it is

always necessary to go to SASUP (Serviços de Acção Social da Universidade do Porto), in Rua dos Bragas, 151, 4050-123

Porto, from 9.15 to 11.45 and 13.45 to 16.15 to check in and to inform the Immigration Office (Serviço de Estrangeiros e

Fronteiras) on your stay. If you arrive during the weekend or on a holiday, you should go to the services mentioned above the

following working morning. By then you will be asked a guarantee in the amount of one month's rent, which will be returned in

the end of your stay, except there is a reason to proceed otherwise (in case of debt or damage caused to the facilities).

Accommodation of mobility students in halls of residence is co-financed. Therefore, in the academic year 2012/2013 the rent

per month is 135 EUR (for undergraduate students) and 190 EUR (for post-graduate students). Cleaning of the room and linen

(which students do not need to bring with them) are included in this price.

So as to ensure an adequate processing of the students’ requests, the Application Form with the request for Accommodation

should be sent as soon as possible, preferably until the end of May. Any special requests (pets, physical handicaps, family,

etc.) should be submitted at this stage. The procedure adopted at the U.Porto for allocation of University accommodation

considers the requests only upon approval of the Learning Agreement proposed by the students by the respective Faculty.

Although the University has several halls of residence, only the following house mobility students:

Campo Alegre – Rua do Campo Alegre, 1395 – Tel.: +351 22 600 60 19

Paranhos – Rua Dr. Manuel Pereira da Silva – Tel.: +351 22 509 45 53

Bandeirinha – Rua da Bandeirinha, 66 – Tel.: +351 22 600 66 66

Alberto Amaral – Rua de D. Pedro V, 223 – Tel.: +351 22 600 45 56

Campo Alegre – Pólo III – pos-grad students (near the Faculty of Sciences) – Rua do Campo Alegre

José Novais Barbosa – Rua da Pena, s/n - Tel.: + 351 22 609 80 14

All students requesting accommodation in Halls of Residence are sent information regarding the status of their request.

Requests are processed on a "first-come, first-served" basis, after their acceptance by the respective Faculty. Therefore, the

sooner we receive the application, the more chances you stand of getting accommodation in a Hall of Residence. Students

provided with accommodation in Halls of Residence should keep the International Office informed on the date and time of their

arrival.

‘Family Home’ Accommodation

Choosing accommodation in a "family home" is not very common nowadays. Although sometimes this is slightly cheaper than

sharing a flat with other students, the disadvantage is that restrictions usually apply (sometimes you cannot use the kitchen or

the living room as you please, and you are not allowed in the house after certain times, besides there being a limited privacy).

Private Accommodation

It is nowadays more common to rent a flat and share it with other students. This is usually more comfortable, since it allows

the students more freedom and flexibility, especially in terms of timetables.

A possible alternative is that you stay for a few days at a youth hostel or at a hotel and find suitable accommodation after your

arrival. It's quite common to find flats for rent all over the city, and the prices vary according to the location or the conditions

being offered. In Porto the Youth Hostel is located in Rua Paulo da Gama, 551 – 4169-006. Reservations can be made by

phone (+351 22 617 72 57) or e-mail.

When reserving accommodation in “family homes” and flats, students are sometimes asked to pay for two-months rent in

advance. Sometimes landlords only rent a flat or a room after they speak to the students – this being one of the reasons why

the International Office only provides students with the contact details of the landlords, so that they can make a pre-

reservation. Students who booked accommodation in a flat or in a “family home” should contact the landlord prior to their

arrival so as to confirm the booking and agree on the handing of the key.

Banks and Insurances Banks in Portugal are quite well organized. Most shops accept credit and debit cards, as well as cash and cheques issued by Portuguese banks. There are many banks all over the country. There are cash points (ATMs) almost everywhere, where you can use any type of international credit card. In Portugal you can pay most bills (water, electricity, telephone, etc.) in the ATMs, and buy train or even show tickets. Some banks have their own network of cash points. Their clients can therefore request cheques and make deposits, besides withdrawing money. Contrary to other countries, the Portuguese network of cash points is administered by a single institution, the SIBS – Sistema Interbancário de Serviços. Therefore, the clients of a certain bank may withdraw money or perform other bank operations in any cash point, regardless of the bank. This does not usually imply additional charges. Internet banking is becoming increasingly common. Therefore, all banks in Portugal offer this service. To open a bank account you need a valid ID card or Passport and a tax card (issued by the local tax department). Besides the main Portuguese banks, such as Caixa Geral de Depósitos, Millennium, Banco Espírito Santo, Banco Português de Investimento and Banco Santander Totta, other international banks operate in Portugal, such as Deutsche Bank or Barclays Bank.

School Insurance

The U.Porto has a School Insurance policy so that their students are insured during school activities. This school insurance

provides the students with several guarantees (personal physical accidents, death or permanent invalidity, hospital treatment

costs and civil liability of the students), should these accidents take place during University activities:

regular university activities, including classes;

study visits;

outdoor classes;

University training;

other activities organised by the University;

trips to or from the University

So as to be insured by this compulsory insurance, you should make the registration at the registry of your respective Faculty.

You will then be asked to pay an insurance premium of around 2.00 EUR. Please note that this insurance policy does not

cover personal physical accidents outside University activities or sickness.

European Health Insurance Card

One of the problems students face when they decide to spend a study period abroad is health care. Community provisions on

social security provide some solutions on this matter – the European Health Insurance Card (CESD).

This card is available to European citizens who are travelling within the European Economic Area, (i.e. the European Union,

Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein) and Switzerland, for private or professional reasons.

This document allows students from another Member State or country of the European Economic Area (EEA) or from

Switzerland to be assisted in case of sickness or personal accident, thus taking advantage of a wider coverage in terms of

health care. The CESD, to be requested to the social security service of your country, is a proof that you are registered in that

social security service and allows you to take advantage of health services in Portugal. In this case, students will be asked to

pay as much as national citizens under the same circumstances.

Health Insurance

The CESD form is part of an agreement between the Member States of the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland.

However, there are other agreements between Portugal and other countries outside the EEA. Students from those countries

should ask for further information in their own country before travelling to Portugal. If they fall outside the system mentioned

above, students must get a health insurance, which will provide them with health care during their stay in Portugal. Without

one of these, should they need medical assistance during their stay at the U.Porto, students will have to pay for the respective

health treatment.

Civil Liability Insurance

This cost-effective insurance is not compulsory, but is recommended, since health insurance policies and the CESD do not

cover civil liability (damage caused to third parties) of your daily activities (outside University activities, which are covered by

School insurance).

Personal Physical Accidents Insurance

This insurance is not compulsory but is recommended. Besides covering personal physical accidents in your daily life, this

insurance often provides you with repatriation insurance, in case of sickness or accident (depending on the insurance

policies).

Costs of Living

For each week you reside in Porto you should allow yourself the following sums of money to cover your expenses:

Basic Living Costs per Month

Private Accomodation

Single room 200-250 €

Double room 175-200 €

One-room Appartment 500 €

Lunches

at ISCAP’s Cafetaria Weekdays only 40-50 €

Transports Public transports –

Andante Z2 monthly pass 20.50 €

In spite of the perceived price increase after Euro has been introduced in 2002, Portugal has a relatively low cost of living, as compared to other EU Member States, although some products might be more expensive here than in other countries. The inflation rate in 2012 was 2.8%.

The average monthly cost of living of a student in Porto can be estimated as follows:

Accommodation: between 150 EUR and 250 EUR;

Meals: between 150 EUR and 200 EUR;

Transports: 30.00 EUR (for a Z2 Andante monthly pass)

For your reference, these are approximate prices of some products:

Carton of milk - 0.60 EUR;

Bottle of water (1.5 l) - 0.39 EUR;

Roll of bread - 0.12 EUR;

1 kg of rice - 0.90 EUR;

Coffee (expresso) - 0.60 EUR;

1 meal - 2.35 EUR (in the canteen);

Bus/metro - 1.20 EUR (1 Z2 ticket); 1.45 EUR (1 Z3 ticket);

Newspapers - 1.00 EUR (daily) and 3.00 EUR (weekly);

Cinema - 4.50 EUR (student ticket).

Emergencies Emergency services in hospitals are operational 24 hours a day. The two main hospitals in Porto are 'Hospital Geral de S. João' and 'Hospital Geral de Santo António'. There are also many other clinics and health centres, both public and private. Some of these are also operational 24 hours a day. Access to private health centres requires the payment of the respective charges or, alternatively, a valid health insurance. For EU citizens to have access to public health services, the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is necessary. In this case, you just need to pay for a fee (“taxa moderadora”). Like in most European countries, the national emergency number is 112. Besides the services already mentioned, the U.Porto provides, through its Social Services, free medical and psichological support to its students. For further information, please visit the U.Porto Health Portal and the webpage of the Academic Integration, Health and Sports Department. The most common security services in Porto are PSP - Polícia de Segurança Pública and GNR - Guarda Nacional Republicana. PSP acts mostly in urban areas, while the GNR acts mainly in less populated areas. There are also other police services, such as GNR-BT (Traffic brigade of the GNR), PJ (Intelligence Police, which is responsible for crime investigation) and the local police (Polícia Municipal).

Language requirements

Although speaking Portuguese is not a pre-requisite to study at the U.Porto, most courses unit are taught in Portuguese. Therefore, learning Portuguese makes the integration the University and in the country easier. Besides, this is a unique opportunity to learn the third European language most widely spoken (about 250 million speakers on the world). Teachers may allow students to write assignments and take exams in other languages namely in English, but this situation can only be agreed upon arrival in each individual case. For second and third degree cycle programmes proficiency in English may be required.

Institutional system for credits and grades

ECTS Credits The University of Porto uses the ECTS Grading system. The number of ECTS credits for each course reflects the total workload a student is expected to devote to the course (in the form of lectures, homework, reading, essays, consultations, seminars, etc.). 60 ECTS credits are attached to the workload of a full-time year of formal learning (academic year) and the associated learning outcomes. At the University of Porto, one credit corresponds to 27 hours of student total work.

1 full academic year = 60 ECTS credits 1 semester = 30 ECTS credits

Local Grade Grades awarded on a scale of 0-20 (pass mark 10)

18 to 20 Excellent

16 and 17 Very good

14 and 15 Good

10 to 13 Sufficient

0 to 9 Fail

ECTS Grades The ECTS grading scale is based on the percentile (similar but not identical to the class rank) of a student in a given assessment, that is how was graded his/her performance relatively to other students enrolled in the last three years of the same curricular unit/course (or in a significant group of students). Therefore, ECTS grade does not have a direct fixed correspondence to the local grade.
