As most of you already know, we lost our most beloved pastor, Father James P. West†, last Sunday. The Rosary will be this Sunday at 6:00 p.m. at the church. The body will lie in state all night in the church. All are encouraged and welcomed to spend some time in prayer following the rosary throughout the evening. Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for this Monday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Edward. Interment will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery (Texas side). A meal will be provided afterwards at Sacred Heart Church parish center. If you are able to provide a dish to share, please drop it off at Sacred Heart parish center between 8:00 and 9:15 a.m. on Monday. The Spanish-speaking community will be praying a Novena starting Tuesday, March 17th through Wednesday, March 25th at 7:00 p.m. at the church. If anyone from the English-speaking community would like to lead the rosary any of these nights, please contact the

Fish Fries 2020 This Lent, before praying the Stations of the Cross, the Knight of Columbus,

Council 2650 will be serving fried catfish meals with all the fixins, from 5-6 PM every Friday of Lent. For a

plate of fish, fries, hush puppies, coleslaw, dessert and a drink, the cost is

$10 for adults and $5 for children. Come and enjoy a delicious

meal before attending Stations.

The Knights of Columbus Council 2650 and Beech Street Baptist Church have partnered with Lifeshare Blood Services on March 22 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm and April 26, 2020 from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm to accept donations to help replenish the blood supply in Texarkana and the surrounding area. Minutes from Parish Council Meeting Monday, February 24, 2020

(Bishop Graves Building, Room 14) The meeting was called to order at 6:05 pm by Sam Tirrito, President; Fr. West led the Council in the Opening Prayer. Members in attendance: Sam Tirrito (President), Ann Mayo (President-Elect), Jose Perez, Anne Formby, Anita Clay, Mary Adams, Mark Luckett, Malise O’Banion and Donny Thompson Members absent: Tyler Morton. Outgoing members present: Don Capshaw Outgoing members absent: Mark Borgognoni (Secretary) and Louise Tausch Fr. James West was present as Pastor. Woodrow Hardy was present as Youth Minister. The minutes from the meeting of January 6, 2020 were reviewed. Ann Mayo made a motion for approval of the minutes and the motion was seconded by Anne Formby. A. Unfilled Parish Council Roles a. Timekeeper-Sam Tirrito discussed the need for the timekeeper position. It was determined at this time not to fill this position. We are not having any trouble staying on task during the meetings. b. President Elect- It was discussed it would be best for Ann Mayo to step down from President Elect position since she will be going off the council the same time as the President. Anne Formby will assume this role. c. Secretary- Anita Clay will assume the role of Secretary.

B. Parish Youth Report- Woodrow Hardy gave an update of events with the Youth. He took a group of kids to the March for Life in Little Rock on January 20, 2020. They are working on getting a

group of high school students to attend the Catholic Youth Convention in Little Rock the weekend of April 3-5, 2020.

C. Hispanic Community update was given by Jose Perez including updates of upcoming Events. They are working

on planning Good Friday festivities at this time. D. No snacks in the church announcements have been made at several Masses. Several parishioners have voiced concerns with not being able to bring small snacks for the smaller children to keep their attention during Mass. Fr. West will discuss with staff and see if there are any changes that need to be made.

E. Pastor Comments included: a. Fr. West would like to thank all those outgoing parish council members including: Leon Pesek and his replacement Louise Tausch, Don Capshaw and Mark Borgognoni. The Parish appreciates their commitment to serve on the council and thank them for their service. b. Fr. West would also like to welcome the newly elected parish council members: Mark Luckett, Malise O’Banion and Donny Thompson c. Fr. West would like to re-establish the Security Committee now that Mark Luckett has come on the council. He has given him the task to bring back ideas of moving forward to ensure that St. Edward is as safe as possible for our parishioners. Questions/Concerns of Council Members/Future Agenda Items: The next meeting of the Parish Council will be March 19th, 2020 at 6 pm. Ann Mayo agreed to do the closing pray after the January meeting.

The Youth Group will be hos ng our Annual Easter Egg Hunt April 12th star ng at 3:30. We will be collec ng individually-wrapped candy ONLY for the event. Please drop off your dona ons in the box next to the elevator. Thank you!!!

SAINT JOSEPH, HUSBAND OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

March 19 Joseph, someone once joked, was indeed the perfect hus-band: the only major character in Jesus’ story who never ut-ters a word! But the Gospel recounts and the liturgy cele-brates his silent witness of faith-filled deeds: “With a hus-band’s love he cherished Mary, the Virgin Mother of God; with fatherly care he watched over Jesus” (Preface of Saint Joseph, Sacramentary). Catholic devotion, therefore, hails him as patron-protector of the universal Church. Some cul-tures set a festive “Saint Joseph’s Table,” welcoming the poor and strangers to feast with family and friends. Tradition keeps today as the anniversary of his death, which we presume was peaceful, with Jesus and Mary present. Thus, Catholics in-voke Joseph as Patron of a Happy Death. Descended from David’s house, which God finished “building” through Jo-seph’s provision of a home for Mary and Jesus, he was, fit-tingly, a carpenter by trade; thus, patron of workers. Spring, nature’s rebirth, begins between his feast and Annunciation (March 25), appropriately, since Joseph’s silent obedience and Mary’s “Let it be done to me according to your word” (Luke 1:38) usher in humanity’s spiritual rebirth. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. Patricio nació en la actual Escocia en la familia de un soldado romano. A los 16 años fue capturado por piratas irlandeses y sometido a seis años de pastoreo y sufrimiento. Luego de varios intentos pudo escapar, regresó a su tierra y se ordenó sacerdote. A los 46 años volvió a Irlanda del Norte como obispo y misionero. Gracias al conocimiento del idioma y la cultura se dedicó a evangelizar a los líderes de las tribus, comen-zando por la más influyente y poderosa: los taras. Pese a las amenazas contra su vida, continuó predicando el Evangelio, fundando conventos, monasterios, parro-quias, además de cristianizar los ritos paganos, como el de la ceremonia del fuego, que fue conquistado con la celebración del fuego nuevo en la Vigilia Pascual, desafiando abiertamente la costumbre impuesta por los sacerdotes de la religión celta. Esto por poco le cuesta la vida, pero fue su victoria y con ella, la del cristianis-mo. GRACE CLINIC OF TEXARKANA Dr. D. Stratton Douglas, M.D., 312 West 4th St., Texarkana, TX. This clinic provides free medical care for uninsured patients on all Tuesdays and one Sunday per month. Arrival by 3:30 pm is required in order to have name added to list for treatment. Please call 903-949-5571 before you go to check the schedule. No appointments are given.

In case of death, please contact the Parish Office directly in order to make the necessary arrangements.

A funeral meal may be provided in the Parish Hall, if requested by the family.
