• Francisco Blancas de S. Jose, O. P. was a Dominican priest credited with

installing the first printing press in the Philippines in 1602. Known as

the father of Tagalog grammarians, he also produced significant treatises

on the Tagalog language.

• Blancas de San Jose's works include Libro de Nuestra Señora del Rosario en

lengua y letra de Filipinas, the first book to be printed by movable type in the country in 1602; the Libro de los Cuatro Postrimerias del Hombre, the

first typographic book printed in 1604; and the landmark grammar book La Regla y Arte de la Lengua Tagala in

1610.

• From 1602 to 1640, there were around twenty-seven books printed by typography (UPILS handout in the course LS 103). The first book printed by movable type is the Libro de Nuestra Señora del Rosario en lengua y letra de Filipinas, by Fr. Francisco Blancas de San Jose in Binondo in 1602.it was established that the first typographic book is the Libro de los Cuatro Postrimerias del Hombre by Fr. Francisco Blancas de San Jose, printed by Juan de Vera in Binondo in 1604.

The poetry in tagalog written in Latin characters appeared for the first time in a

religious work directed to explain the basic doctrines of the catholic faith: “Memorial of

the Christian life” in language tagala (Manila, 1605). The work contained poems of three authors: Fernando Bagong Banta, writer and Castilian poet in tagalog and, this are, “ladino”; an anonymous native

poet and the author of the book, the monk Francisco of San Jose.

• San Jose denominates “the Romance” poem. The work takes each one from the Ten orders and in

the preface the work of San Jose appears a poem of Bagongbantá praising.

• The poem of the anonymous author appears at the end of the book with the same function that the one of Bagongbantá. The poems of San jose

follow texts in prosa like poetic summaries of the taught lessons. Sometimes the poem of

Bagongbantá has considered the first work written in tagalo with Latin characters, although it was united in fact of a poem in Spanish with the

literal translation after each line.

• Gaspar Aquino de Belén is a Filipino poet and translator of the 17th century, author in particular of Pasyon, a famous poetic of passion, died narration and resurrection of Christ.

• Place of Birth: Rosario, Batangas

• Filipino natives, generally were not taught Spanish, but the bilingual individuals, notably poet-translator Gaspar Aquino de Belén, produced devotional poetry written in the Roman script in the Tagalog language. Pasyon, begun by Aquino de Belén, is a narrative of the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, which has circulated in many versions.

• This development marked the beginning of Indio literacy and thus spurred the creation of the first written literary native text by the native. These writers, called ladinos because of their fluency in both Spanish and Tagalog (Medina, pp. 55-56), published their work, mainly devotional poetry, in the first decade of the 17th century. Among the earliest writers of note were Francisco de San Jose and Fernando Bagongbata (Medina)

• But by far the most gifted of these native poet-translators was Gaspar Aquino de Belen (Lumbera, p.14). Mahal Na Pasion ni Jesu Christo, a Tagalog poem based on Christ’s passion, was published in 1704. This long poem, original and folksy in its rendition of a humanized, indeed, a nativized Jesus, is a milestone in the history of Philippine letters.

• Ironically -- and perhaps just because of its profound influence on the popular imagination -- as artifact it marks the beginning of the end of the old mythological culture and a conversion to the new paradigm introduced by the colonial power.

• The indigenous form of the Pasyon was first set into writing by Gaspar Aquino de Belén in " Ang Mahal na Pasión ni Jesu Christong Panginoon Natin na Tola" ("The Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ that is a Poem"), written in 1703 and approved in 1704.

• The more popular version of the Pasyon is the "Casaysayan nang Pasiong Mahal ni Jesucristong Panginoon Natin na Sucat Ipag-alab nang Puso nang Sinomang Babasa" ("The History of the Passion of Jesus Christ our Lord that will surely Set Afire the Heart of Whosoever Reads it").

• An 1852 erudition by Aniceto de Merced, El libro de la vida (The Book of Life), did not prove popular with the masses.
