42 CHILDREN & the SHE BEARS!

A Lesson By: Tam Walls

HONORING OTHER ADULTS We understand that the Fifth Commandment tells us that we must honor our father and mother. The word honor means to hold or esteem on a high level because of a special position someone holds. Does that mean that you can disrespect or dishonor other adults who are not your parents? The answer is…NO!

A “PARENT” IS… In fact, all adults whether they

are your teachers, church elders, policeman, fireman etc. are to be honored. To get a better understanding let’s take a look at the word parent. The definition of a parent is a father or a mother as we all know. But it is also defined as an ancestor, a protector or guardian. We can see that the above listed individuals fall in the category of “parent.”

1 TIMOTHY Therefore, we must honor and respect

all adults no matter if it’s your biological parents, teachers, church elders or other adults who have authority over you. This is required by God. “Rebuke not an elder, but intreat him as a father; and the younger men as brethren; The elder women as mothers; the younger as sisters, with all purity,” (1Timothy 5:1-2). If you fail to do so you risk punishment from God.

2 KINGS 2:23-25 This short bible lesson illustrates that God requires the Fifth Commandment to be kept by children towards all adults. One day the prophet Elisha was going up to the city of Bethel. As he was traveling, little children came forth out of the city, and began to mock Elisha. They said cruel things. Mocking him by saying, “Go up, thou bald head; go up thou bald head.”

This was very disrespectful and down right mean! The actions of the children displeased the Lord. Elisha turned and looked at the children and cursed them in the name of the Lord. God sent two she bears out of the woods which ate forty and two children.

GOD’S PUNISHMENT

REVIEW In this lesson we learned that the word parent is more than our father and mother. A “parent” is also an ancestor, a protector, or guardian. We also learned that fifth commandment covers all “parents.” Remember…”Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. Honor thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;) That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.” (Ephesians 6: 1-2)
