Han Dynasty• Emperor Wudi one of the early rulers 141 BCE
> he broke the power of the nobles– he made them pay high taxes, and give him gifts to pay loyalty or tribute to the
emperor « doing this takes power away from the nobles and gives the leader more power
» centralizing the government • he puts leaders in charge of other areas that are responsible to him
> keeps continuity all over the empire – leader makes laws, rules etc. and the local leaders have to let
the people know about them and enforce them« creates a unified empire
> he built schools, libraries> he conquered land and expanded the size of the empire> changing the social structure of China > implements Confucianism as the philosophy of the government
– filial piety family respect is a central philosophy« wants trained people to work in and run the government
» education is important and they have to pass civil service exams• removes the friends of the emperor from getting jobs or unqualified
people > spends money from taxes on infrastructure building up the society & helping the
