$125 for 6 sessions plus class supplies Monday 6 - 9

September 8, 15, 22, 29, October 6, 13

Sew Fundamental is a series of “Learn to Sew” classes for novice sewers or “it’s been a long time” sewers. The first lesson is essential to your sewing success and includes an introduction to sewing terms, tools and techniques. You’ll get comfortable with threading your machine, make the Camelback Carryall Bag and be ready to take any of BC’s beginning level classes.

Each week thereafter, you’ll make a project from the book, S.E.W.: Sew Everything Workshop by Diana Rupp. Cecile Babich-Morrow and Mary Furniss have planned six sessions for you that will include a pillow, apron, yoga pants or boxer shorts, flouncy tank top or Tokyo tie bag and naughty secretary skirt. Complete these classes and you will be ready to take another creative class or work in the Sewing Lab.

You can rent a machine or you may purchase one starting at $249.

Serger Embellished Cross-Body Bag $30.00 with Mary Lewkowitz for beginners and beyond

Tue September 9 10 - 2

Practical Project Bags $25.00 with Mary Furniss for all sewers

Sat August 23 10 - 1

Now you can make attractive project bags to help organize your “just about anything”. The clear vinyl helps to see what is stored in each bag and they can be personalized with embroidery or names. These bags are so much fun to make and use, you’ll want to make several for yourself and others. They are a versatile gift as well as useful tools to keep your sewing/craft projects and ideas organized. Another great way to use these project bags is to store toys with lots of pieces. It works great for this because the children can quickly see what is in the bag as well. The pattern includes three sizes.

Weekend Wonders: Zippered Pouches in

3 sizes $25.00 with Cecile Babich Morrow for all levels

Wed September 17 10 - 1

These cute little bags come in three sizes - small, medium and large. Each has a wipe-it-clean PUL lining, so you can use them for storage, travel and more. Not only is this a quick and easy project you can whip out in a weekend, it’s also a project that just takes a little bit-o-fabric!

Regardless if you have a few stitches or hundreds on your machine, you will have fun in this class! Use your straight stitch and zigzag stitches or go stitching crazy with this project that turns into a purse …... or pillow if you prefer.

If you have gained confidence from taking our Sew Fundamental or Quilting Fundamental series or other basic classes, use the Sewing Lab to finish a class project or work on a new project. Our Sewing Lab will have an “on duty” teacher to help you with your project.

Summer Social Open Sewing To celebrate Summer and keeping Cool, we have added more Open Sewing times

to our current schedule of classes. Summer in Phoenix means finding ways to stay cool and not think about those 100 plus degree temps. Let us suggest coming to BC and sewing with

your buddies....or making new ones. Enjoy our AC and finish some of those UFOs. You'll look back on the summer of 2014 with pride in all you accomplished. We don't normally have

Open Sewing in the evening, but wanted to include all of our customers that can't make a daytime class session. For these Open Sewing sessions, we ask that you register ( even

though there is no charge) so we can be sure to have enough space for everyone.

There is a special need for clothing for older, larger girls. If you can’t attend we are accepting unopened packages of underwear and socks for all ages and sizes.

Techniques + Tutorials + Style Direct to you - one garment at a time!

Sew Confident is an educational program produced by The Sewing Workshop that not only offers how-to

tutorials relating to our pattern collection, but processes and ideas that enhance our collection

with pattern variation suggestions, fitting tips, and signature sewing techniques.

The tutorials are presented in a step-by-step format - rather than as a continuous video. By stopping the

action at the point of interest, you will be able to successfully recreate the technique that will

give you the right results. Pick up your program at The Bernina Connection

Myths About Keeping an Old Sewing Machine

It is common for sewing machines to be brought into our Service Department which can be described as "past their

prime". These well loved machines may or may not still perform well, and often owners keep them for the wrong

reasons. Here are three common myths about new machines vs. old machines:

- MYTH #1: "New machines are complicated to operate". Threading: Most new sewing machines are simple to thread and follow a thread path which is very similar to Grandma's

antique. Operation: The process of selecting a stitch was quite

complicated on most older machines. It often involved turning three different knobs. Sometimes cams had to be

inserted. On a new Bernina, the most common stitches are pictured on the front panel. Selection is as easy as the push

of a single button.

- MYTH #2: "Electronic machines have more problems". Before modern electronics were applied to sewing

machines, every feature had to function mechanically. Every pattern was controlled by a rotating cam. A follow

arm was attached to linkage which caused the needlebar and feed dogs to follow the cam. Does this sound

complicated? It is. New machines replace most of those moving parts with two

step motors. One step motor moves the needlebar. The

other controls the movement of the feed dogs. Simple. This design eliminates many of the moving parts. Less moving

parts means a greatly reduced potential for expensive repairs.

MYTH #3: "They don't make them like they used to". Unfortunately, this phrase IS true for most brands of

sewing machines. Most modern machines have many plastic

parts which do not have longevity. However, the exception is Bernina. Almost all of the internal parts are metal. The

outside covers are plastic to reduce weight and make your machine more transportable (which our customers love!).

But be assured that under those covers, a new Bernina is composed of the same Swiss steel as was used in

Grandma's Bernina sixty or more years ago. No other modern machine is made like a Bernina.

If you have an older sewing machine and are trying to

decide if it should be refurbished, it may be helpful to consider that a new Bernina is:

Easier to operate. More reliable.

Every bit as heavy duty. You may have good memories with your old machine which

is now past its prime. However, today may be a good time to treat yourself to even better sewing adventures in your

future.

Join Cecile, DiAnn and friends in making heart shaped pillows for breast cancer survivors that will be given to women at the time of their surgery. We need people of all ages and expertise to cut, stitch, stuff, and attach labels. Since May 2004, over 6000 hearts have been made with materials donated by friends. Tina’s Treasures at Virginia Piper Cancer Center at Scottsdale Shea Healthcare, Wellness Community and other surgi-centers receive and distribute these hearts. Hearts are always available at BC for those who need them. Won’t you come help with this project? A little of your time or resources can really make a difference for someone experiencing breast cancer. Call to let us know that you are coming and if you are bringing your sewing machine so we can plan for machines, work stations and fabric. Working kids are welcome!

Days for Girls Thu August 14 5 - 8

We are so blessed to be living here in the United States where

many of the problems that girls

and women face in the developing world are just not an

issue. In over 61 countries girls miss up to two months of school a year because they

don't have proper sanitary supplies to use during their monthly periods. Women in the work force face the

same issues. Go to www.daysforgirls.org to read about

the difference this organization has made in these counties.

We want to get involved in this effort. We'll have jobs

for any level of sewing skill. Drawstring bags hold the washable pads along with small bars of soap. For

many girls these are the prettiest things they have ever

owned.

If this touches your heart as it has ours, please join us.

Quilters Jackpot Sat 9 - 10

June 7, July 5, August 2, September 6 with Gail Shannon

Every month, Gail picks a group of stunning fabrics. Using these fabrics, you create a 12” finished size block - any pattern you

like - as many as you want! Bring your blocks in, with your name on them, of course, and at next session we draw names for the winner of the jackpot! Every 12 blocks turned in - we have one

winner! With 3 - 6 winners a month, it won’t be long before you have ready-made blocks for a

quilt top! Once everyone has won - we start a new round. You can join in anytime. This

group has been one of our most fun “classes” ever. Congratulations to all the

winners! New participants are welcome! Ask for the Rules! You could be a winner too!
