Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 9, 2020

From the Desk of Fr. Brian Hecktor … Thank you to the PTO for a great trivia night last Saturday! They filled up the gym with teams and were on hand to ensure all went smoothly. We had good food and drink, challenging questions, and a really great time! Thank you, PTO, for all you do for the School!

I would like to briefly meet with Lectors and Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion at 12:15 pm in church on Sunday, February 23. We’ll go over instructions for your role (some things have changed), welcome new members, and recommit to these important Mass duties through a prayer and blessing. Please make every effort to attend. If you are unable, contact me to go over the instructions. Thank you for all your do. We are beginning our preparation for Confirmation. 7th Graders and at least one parent need to attend a Confirmation Meeting at 6:30 pm on Monday, February 10, in church. In our busy lives, it’s always good to have options for Confession and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Fr. Mike Grosch, Pastor of St. Michael the Archangel Parish in Shrewsbury, asked me to let you know they offer Confession and Adoration every Wednesday at 5:30pm. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, February 26. Be on the lookout in the vestibules for The Word Among Us daily meditation booklets for Lent. Using this booklet is one of the many ways we can enhance our Lenten journey. Have a good week and God bless you. Fr. Hecktor

FOUND IN PEWS: A “ Lost & Found” red crate is located in the main vestibule for a few weeks. The standard “found” location is the smaller vestibule called “Cry Room” (with seats along the wall). Found: A scarf, gloves, eye glasses, etc. Please take a look with a possibility you just might know the person to whom the item belongs. Did you know there is a PAMPHLET RACK? It is located on the wall in the main vestibule directly across from the bench windows? The top slots currently have retreat opportunity information. The other racks contain continuing Catholic services available. Check it out.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL …

Dear Parishioners,

I am proud to announce that each of our 8th graders was accepted into their first choice high school this week. It is an exciting time for these young men and women as they begin planning for the next phase in their academic

careers. They will soon be walking the halls of St. Mary’s, St. John Vianney, Bishop DuBourg, Notre Dame, Nerinx Hall, Cor Jesu Academy, and St. Joseph’s Academy. I am excited to see what the future holds for them! We are also happy to induct a new group of students into the National Junior Honor Society after 8:00 am Mass on Friday, February 14. The students invited for induction must maintain a 3.5 GPA, and display good character, attitude, and look for ways to serve others. It is uplifting to see so many of our students living our Mission Statement: “Enter to Learn, Go Forth to Serve.”

2019 St. Vincent de Paul Year-End Report The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is an international Catholic lay organization dedicated to providing help to neighbors in need. In 2019 St. Marks’ team of 12 SVdP volunteers provided assistance to 144 families in need in the amount of $56,781. Our help goes to families within

St. Mark’s parish boundary that find themselves in an unexpected or temporary crisis situation like job loss, or inability to work due to illness, disability or accident for themselves or a family member. We help with gas and electric bills, rent assistance, prescription drugs, food vouchers, car repair and vouchers for bedding, clothing, furniture and household items from the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store. None of this could have happened in 2019 without help from St. Mark’s parishioners in the form of donations to our poor box (located near the back of church) and your prayers. In addition, we received financial support from the SVdP Council office and our District office in the amount of $22,630. The need is great! Please remember to support St. Mark’s St. Vincent de Paul in 2020 through donations to the Poor Box in the back of church, so that together we can continue to bring comfort and assistance to our neighbors in need. If you are interested in becoming a St. Mark SVdP volunteer, please call 314-743-8600 and ask for our Conference President to contact you.

Sincerely, St. Mark’s St. Vincent de Paul Members

As Jesus fasted 40 days in the desert, the Church traditionally fasts during Lent. A form of bodily prayer, fasting and abstinence in union with other Christians reminds us of our utter dependence on and love for God. A gesture of repentance, fasting is symbolic of a change of heart as we turn away from sin to live in fidelity to the Gospel.

Lenten Regulations

Fast: Ages 18–59 fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, limiting themselves to one full meal and two smaller meals each day, with no snacking between meals.

Abstinence: Catholics age 14 and older abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and all the Fridays of Lent.

Interested in growing in Communion with Jesus this Lenten Season? Join our study group starting on March 2, 6:45 - 8 pm. We will meet each Monday evening in the Parish Office until May (when School breaks for summer). We will be reading and studying “33 Days to Greater Glory.” Books will be provided. Please contact Denise Plumley at 314.540.1278 and “LEAVE A MESSAGE” if you are interested. RSVP by February 28.

Feed The Poor: St. Mark is making a deliver to St. Agatha’s Food Pantry on Monday, February 15. Monetary donations are appreciated, place your donation in one of the envelopes available in the lobby / vestibule. Please drop the envelope in the collection basket.

Thank you for your generosity.
