Celebrating the Priesthood and the Gift of the Eucharist

Next weekend is a big day for our Archdiocese and for our two parishes. Of the five men to be ordained priests, we have had the joy and honor of walking with two of them along the road of their vocation: Deacon Dan Zinger and Deacon Denis Nakkeeran. Ordination. I invite and encourage you to come and pray with them and with one another in ways that we can. On next Saturday, August 1, at 10 AM, Cardi-nal Sean O'Malley will ordain them in the Cathedral of the Holy Cross. Because space is limited by covid regulations the ordination is not open to the public but it will be televised on CatholicTV which is on cable channel 268 You can watch this at home or you can join us at Saint John's. There we will be to-gether in a spirit of joy and prayer watching the ordi-nation on our big screen, and in air-conditioned comfort! Doors will open at 9:30 AM. First Masses. We invite you to the first Masses which Father Dan and Father Denis will celebrate the next day. On Sunday, August 2, Father Dan Zinger will cele-brate his first Mass at Saint Thomas at 12 PM noon. This will be a bilingual Mass for all in the American and Brazilian communities. Following the Mass Fa-ther Dan will offer his first blessing to those who come in the area outside the church. If you would like to join us please go to our website to sign up. This is important because of the limited space. Father Denis Nakkeeran will offer his first Mass on Sunday afternoon at 3:00 PM at Saint John's Church, followed by a reception in Mary's park where he will give his first priestly blessing. Again it is important for you to sign up on our website so we can plan ac-cordingly. On the following weekend, our new priests will switch churches and Father Denis will celebrate the 10 AM Mass at Saint Thomas and Father Dan will offer the 10 AM Mass at Saint John's.

The Gift of the Eucharist. We are more than ever aware of the need for priestly vocations. We recently began a special Year of the Eucharist in the middle of a pandemic which separated us from the Lord and from one another when we could not celebrate Mass together. Without priests there can be no Eucharist and without people we were not able to give the Lord all the glory and honor of participating as a communi-ty in the great mystery of the death and resurrection of his Son in this holy sacramental sacrifice of the altar. Over the next several weeks I will be continuing my series of reflections: Eucharist: Holy Food for Holy People. These articles will focus a lot on the celebra-tion of the Eucharist, the Mass, where we encounter the risen Lord in every way that he comes to us: in the people gathered, in the priest presiding, in the scrip-tures proclaimed and preached, and in the Eucharistic prayer and communion when Jesus offers himself to the Father and then to us as our Bread of Life. Over fifty years have passed since the bishops of the whole world met under the leadership of two saints, John XXIII and Paul VI to guide our church to meet the challenges of our modern world. The first major document that came from Second Vatican Council was the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, from which emerged the Mass in the form we know it to-day. Understanding how we celebrate the Eucharist and why is a key to entering more deeply and fruitful-ly into the mystery of the Eucharist and to making it the source and summit of our Catholic life which it must be. In today's bulletin is a very fine article, The Gift of the Liturgical Reform, (see pg.10) about the reforms of the liturgy that came about after the Council. I have asked permission of the author, Mary Healy, to re-print it and she very graciously agreed. Many of the changes in the Mass that were made were not well explained or introduced in some parishes, resulting in anger and rejection on the part of some and poor im-plementation on the part of others. In places today liturgy has become a battleground instead of the place where we find unity, strength and hope. Please take time to read the installments of this article. May it stimulate a healthy, positive grasp of what God is do-ing when we gather at Mass. God bless. Fr. John

Pe. John

MINISTRY UPDATE

Dear parishioners/friends of St. John’s and St. Thomas,

After several conversations with the Peabody Board of Health Director, and after discussion of these conversations with our Pastor, Fr. John, the Outreach Program is reopening for indoor eating in our church hall space on Friday, July 3rd. The space has been altered to accommodate our brothers and sisters with-in the COVID-19 guidelines of social distancing, and masks will be worn by all, except of course during eating! As well, complete and thorough cleaning and sanitization of all areas and touch spots will occur each week, under my guidance and direction, as approved by the Peabody Board of Health Dept. Reopening has been carefully crafted to provide a safe and healthy environment for everyone in our program and in the parish. Be assured that this is of utmost importance to me and to all our volunteers, as we continue in our “new normal” mo-dalities. I share all of this with you to provide a complete un-derstanding of our ministry adherence to the viral crisis chang-es. Needed items for donation at this time: symbols of our faith such as rosaries, medals, scapula; deodorant for men or wom-en; flipflops size large or x large (10, 11, 12); men’s boxer briefs or boxers size medium or large; gently used or new standard size bed pillows; gently used or new backpacks for men or women; gently used or new sleeping bags; gently used lightweight parkas or jackets for men or women.

Thank you for your continued prayers and generosity in sup-port!

God bless you! Pat Adam

The Gardener of God This film tells the inspiring story of Gregor Mendel (1822 - 1884),

who is considered the father of modern genetics, a science that changed the world. He was a Catholic priest and Augustinian monk who lived in the

nineteenth century in the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Starring Christopher Lambert as Mendel, the movie reveals how he combined his vocation as a priest and training as a scientist to impact the world by courageously following his passion for the truth. From the beginning he realized that his great scientific discovery could be used in a wrong way, and he sought the help of a benefactor and friend, the princess Hanna von Limburg, who supported him in his work and vocation, and helped spread the knowledge of his discovery

around the world. Mendel was a man of contemplation and of action, a dedicated priest and visionary scientist who is an important witness for contemporary society on how faith and science are not in conflict with each other.

The Gift of the Liturgical Reform MARY HEALY

“Now that a half-century has passed, the time is ripe for a calm, charitable,

and theologically substantive discussion about the liturgical reforms."

Fifty years ago this Advent, on November 30, 1969, the reform of the Eucharistic liturgy called for by Vatican Council II and prom-ulgated by Pope Paul VI went into effect, and Catholics around the world celebrated Mass for the first time in a form very different from what they had known.

Much has happened since then. The decades of ecclesial tumult and chaos following Vatican Council II were followed by a period of relative stabilization during the pontificates of John Paul II and Benedict XVI, then by a return of confusion and polarization dur-ing the present pontificate. Meanwhile, the western world has witnessed a precipitous decline in practice of the faith, even as the Church grows rapidly in Africa and other parts of the developing world.

Western culture, having banished God to the margins, has become a culture increasingly marked by an absence of the sacred — a culture of superficiality, of banality, of perpetual noise and stimulation, of relentless focus on the body and material things. It is a disenchanted world that has left many people, especially the young, with an intense longing for beauty and transcendence. The ab-sence of the sacred has crept into Church as well. Many Catholics have been distressed by the experience of liturgical abuses and irreverent, bland liturgies where few people — or even the celebrant — seemed aware of the sacred mystery in which they were participating. Last summer’s Pew survey, showing that less than two-thirds of Catholics who attend Mass weekly believe in the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist, is one more sobering sign of a crisis in the faith.

One way the thirst for the sacred is being expressed is in a groundswell of enthusiasm for the Extraordinary Form of the Mass (also called the Tridentine Mass, or the Mass celebrated in accordance with the 1962 Missal of St. John XXIII), the liturgy as it existed prior to the reforms of Vatican II. Those who are drawn to the Extraordinary Form speak of its beauty, its aura of mystery, and its connection to centuries of tradition.

In some quarters, the extolling of the older usage is unfortunately accompanied by a denigration of the reformed liturgy and even a vilification of Vatican II itself. Now that a half-century has passed, the time is ripe for a calm, charitable, and theologically substan-tive discussion about the liturgical reforms.

It has become common to blame today’s lack of Eucharistic faith and fervor on the revised rite. Critics rightly point to certain weak-nesses such as collects that are less expressive of God’s majesty, and the omission of important biblical texts from the lectionary. Another unfortunate change is the elimination of the Octave of Pentecost, giving the impression of downgrading the great solemnity that culminates the Easter season. The primary problem, however, is not the reformed rite itself but its flawed implementation, due to poor — and, in some cases, catastrophically defective — theological and spiritual preparation among clergy and laity alike. Too often, the liturgical changes were accompanied by a downplaying of the notion of sacredness. A casual attitude toward the liturgy was fostered, and beautiful churches were “wreckovated.” Lukewarm liturgy has, tragically, obscured the authentic renewal called for by the Council itself.

The Council’s mandate for liturgical reform sprang from a great renewal in biblical, patristic, and liturgical theology that took place in the early twentieth century. The goal was ressourcement: to revitalize the life of the Church by drinking deeply from the wells of Scripture and Tradition, which would in turn better enable the Church to proclaim the Gospel anew to the modern world. As Pope John Paul II and other participants attested, the Council was an experience of a “new Pentecost” in which the breath of the Holy Spirit blew through the Church, leading her to rediscover the treasures of her ancient heritage.

The revised liturgy is the fruit of that renewal. It is in some respects closer to the liturgy as celebrated in the first millennium than is the Tridentine Mass. It is the Ordinary Form of the Mass in the Latin Rite given to the faithful by the Church, the form in which more than 95 percent of Roman Catholics celebrate Mass today. A greater appreciation for what the Council did, and why, can help Catholics deepen their love for the gift of the Mass and, in the words of John Paul II, “rekindle Eucharistic amazement.”

"In other words, Jesus promises this Divine Indwelling at the same time when He

institutes the gift of the Eucharist and the Apostles themselves receive their First Communion. There’s a connection.”

“Action follows being, and our being re-created, as it were, by grace such that

we participate in the very life of God, enables us to then act like God, and

by grace we grow in that likeness.”

“The presence of such consolations when they come point us to the invisible reality that takes

place. We’ve grown in grace and charity, but the real grandeur is that God dwells in us, and that

Holy Communion has intensified this dwelling.”

“St. Elizabeth of the Trinity knew that God was dwelling within her, and not in some vague way. It is true that we

speak about God being omnipresent – that is, everywhere. But this is not

what cap vated Saint Elizabeth so intensely.

Rather, it is the fact that the Trinity can dwell in the

ra onal creature – in us – in a special way.”

“Being in a state of grace means that we possess sanctifying grace, which is our

share in the divine life. Thus, when we do not have this sanctifying grace due to mortal sin, we no longer share in the

divine life. Hence the name mortal sin. No sanctifying grace, no supernatural charity, no Divine Indwelling.

This is the tragedy of sin.”

“God became man, so that man might become God. Our becoming God, so to speak, consists in this

sharing in His life, even now on earth, by grace, by which we know and love Him. Heaven is less a prize that we

receive at the end of our life for being good, and is much more a continua-tion and ful llment of the way that we lived our life on earth. We know and love God here below, and that is brought to completion in Heaven.”

"Stay with me; do not be afraid, for he who seeks my life seeks your life, for you are safe with me." 1Samuel 22:23

The Angelus

V. The Angel of the Lord declared unto Mary. R. And she conceived of the Holy Spirit. Hail, Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

V. Behold the handmaid of the Lord. R. Be it done unto me according to thy word. Hail, Mary…

V. And the Word was made flesh. R. And dwelt among us. Hail, Mary…

V. Pray for us, O holy Mother of God. R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray. Pour forth, we beseech Thee, O Lord, Thy grace into our hearts, that we, to whom the Incarnation of Christ Thy Son was made known by the message of an angel, may by His Passion and Cross be brought to the glory of His Resurrection. Through the same Christ Our Lord. Amen.

The Angelus prayer celebrates the awesome mystery of the Incarnation of Jesus. The Baltimore Catechism says, “God did not abandon man after Adam fell into sin, but promised to send into the world a Savior to free man from his sins and to reopen to him the gates of heaven…. By the Incarnation is meant that the Son of God, retaining His Divine nature, took to Himself a human nature; that is, a body and soul like ours.”

The prayer as we know it dates back to the 16th century, but during the Middle Ages, the custom of praying three Hail Mary's in a row goes back to at least the 12th century. At a meeting of Franciscans in 1279, St. Bonaventure suggested the praying of three Hail Mary's after Compline (Night Prayer) while meditating on Our Lord’s Incarnation, and the ringing of a bell before the prayers.

Especially in days past, this prayer was prayed at 6 a.m., noon, and 6 p.m., and accompanied by the ring-ing of church bells. Per-haps you have seen the famous oil painting “The Angelus” by Jean Francois Millet (painted between 1857 and 1859). In this lovely painting, a couple working in a field pause, bow their heads, and pray the Angelus at the end of the day’s work.

Holy Baptism for BOTH Parishes

All baptisms are being scheduled for

a single family at a time with a total of NINE family members and the

priest or deacon celebrating.
