Sunday School for all – January – March 2018. October 31, 1517 - the beginning of the Reformation – when Martin Luther
nailed to the door of Wittenberg Castle church 95 theses of wrong-doing and
wrong-teachings of the church. It wasn’t the first time someone had tried to
get the church back on the right track – but circumstances surrounding that
moment made it the most fruitful time to for it to come to fullness.
On Oct. 29, Our Saviour’s celebrated that moment in worship and fellowship -
sharing meal and watching the story come alive in the movie, “Luther”.
But, what does this mean?
So many positive changes in so many spheres of life that have come about from
that moment! So many things to learn from that time in our history - one day
can’t possibly capture it all! So we here at Our Saviour’s are going to take
some time to really delve into the story and celebrate the Reformation
throughout the next year. Not just Sunday School kids, not just adult Bible
study, but the whole congregation birth to 100 years old will enter into a
time of learning, reflection, fellowship, fun, skits and music after worship
from January 8- March 12. We will see the places Luther lived and worked.
We will discover the characters that came alongside Luther to help. We will
discover themes in our own story that resonate with the lives of the reformers
– and maybe, we’ll find new courage, new faith in the God that so loved us,
that he gave his life that we might have eternal life. That we might
experience a reformation of our own.
Heard of Hamilton? Well, we’ve got our own Lutheran version: The Luther Rock
Opera. So we’ll have songs to sing so that we remember – to help us hold
these things in our heart.
So, from January 8 – March 12, we won’t have traditional Sunday School for any
age after worship – we will have cross-generational Sunday School for all
ages. In the fellowship hall. We ask that parents come with their children
for this time of learning. We ask that people without kids come and find a
family to sit with – to get to know – to learn with and learn from. That this
might be a time not just of personal growth, but growth for Our Saviour’s as a
family. That we might take these few weeks to build relationships that will
nurture us our whole lives through.
I know it’s not what you’re used to. I know change is hard. But it’s not a
permanent change. The Sunday morning schedule can return to normal after this
brief time. So, take a deep breath and let it out. Come and see. I think
you’ll have fun. I think you’ll get to know some people better than you knew
them before - it’ll make coming to church in the future that much more
enjoyable. You’ll learn something new. You’ll come away encouraged and
empowered. And others will come away better because you were there to come
alongside them. It might be a time of reformation for our whole church – that
might have far-reaching ripple effects on the whole world. All because you
were in the right place. At the right time. Just like Luther.
May God continue to make all things new!

Pastor Gene’s Updates
“The Word became flesh and dwelt among us!”
How time flies! It’s already time to turn our attention to the season of Advent and the celebration of Christmas. As we do that we are fully aware of the “busyness” that our culture has engulfed Christmas in and the way in which that culture can overwhelm and distract from what is really important. We begin with the season of Advent – a season of preparation and anticipation as we prepare to welcome the Christ child into our midst and our lives. Advent is an important season as we are called to prepare our hearts and souls to welcome God anew. We are called to slow down and ponder the wonder of what is coming. We are encouraged to gather for Advent Worship on four Sundays beginning on December 2/3 and continuing through December 23/24. We will gather for worship on Wednesday, December 6th, using the “Holden Evening Prayer” service. On Wednesday, December 13th, we will gather to go caroling in our community and on Wednesday, December 20th, we will gather for a “Blue Christmas” worship service. Don’t forget to observe Advent. But it is the proclamation of Christmas that is the most important event of this season. I continue to be amazed with the Word of God that comes to us in the Christmas proclamation. What we proclaim is that God has chosen to take on human flesh and blood and experience life as any ordinary human being does. That’s more than my mind can hold. But God does it, of course, because God loves the world so much – God loves you so much! God does it in order to walk the path of human suffering and to die on the cross for us. Oh the wonder of God’s love. Since December 24th is a Sunday this year we will celebrate the fourth Sunday of Advent on Saturday evening, December 23rd, at 5:30 pm and Sunday morning, December 24th, at 9:00 am. Our Christmas Eve worship services will be at 5:30 pm and 10:00 pm. There will not be a worship service on Christmas Day this year. One more thing for all of us to remember is that Christmas does not end on December 25th – it only begins that day. Christmas continues for 12 days as we celebrate the coming of Jesus and the meaning of his coming in our lives. May you all have a blessed Advent and Christmas! Pastor Gene Broughton

Sunday, December 3 is the first Sunday in Advent and
we have a special gift to share with you in worship: an
Advent devotional sticker nativity display for you to take
home. It complements our Christmas program theme
this year about God's angels nicely!
Here is the schedule for the Christmas program & practices:
Nov. 26 - No Sunday School
Dec. 3 - Christmas Program Practice - late SS dismissal at 11:15 am
Saturday, Dec. 9 - Christmas program practice 9-11 am
Dec. 10 - Christmas Program, 9 am - be here at 8:30 am for a final run-through.
No Sunday School after the program - come and enjoy treats with your family! Dec. 17- Jan. 6 - Christmas break, no Sunday School
Dec. 24 - 5:30 pm & 10 pm Christmas Eve services
Jan 8 - Cross-Generational SS fun for all in Fellowship Hall on Martin Luther
There are some great Christmas videos in the library - I really like all three of the
VeggieTales movies for Christmas - The Toy that Saved Christmas, The Star of
Christmas and Saint Nicholas - A Story of Giving ( great one to show on Dec. 6 -
St. Nicholas Day)!
Also, there is a display in the fellowship hall of Advent and Christmas themed books
you might wish to include in your personal collection - or make a recommendation to
a parent or grandparent for a Christmas gift. These have been our family favorites!
In January, we will start something new that will involve the whole family and
congregation for Sunday School. We'll be gathering in the fellowship hall to learn
about Martin Luther's life, sing songs, have skits, learn scripture with sign-language
do some fun art projects and get to know new friends in the congregation all at the
same time! So be sure to join us Jan 8 - March 19 for this new kind of fun!

Volunteer Scheduling with Ministry Scheduler Pro
Volunteers are entered into the scheduling process in a couple of ways. Some have served for many years and were
included in the new program. Others used the blue bulletin insert to update their preferences and contact information.
If you have been scheduled or perhaps not been scheduled in a way you might prefer, it is important that you contact
Cindy Johnson at [email protected] or leave a message with Kristi Pedersen-Wilson or Jodi Hjelmeland at 515-332
-3438. Either Kristi or Jodi will pass the message to Cindy.
When scheduling begins, if you use email, you will receive a message from Ministry Scheduler Pro asking that you
indicate times when you are not available to serve in a particular couple of months. You can login to Ministry Scheduler
Pro and register your preferences, or email [email protected]. If you do not use email, please watch for bulletin
announcements about the scheduling process and how to register your preferences. If you make no response, Ministry
Scheduler Pro will assume that you are available and you are likely to be scheduled.

CAROL ING Wednesday, December 13 @ 7pm
BLUE CHRISTMAS ADVENT SERVICE Wednesday, December 20 @ 7pm
Sensitivity to the emotional state of those in the community who have recently lost loved ones or who are living with life-altering circumstances calls us to provide a time and place of solace during the often frenetic days surrounding the celebration of Christmas. Not everyone feels like celebrating. Grief, illness, aging, depression, loneliness, unemployment, and loss can be magnified in the holiday season. Even those who are not struggling with losses may feel the stress of preparations and expectations around Christmas.
In the Northern Hemisphere, December 21 is the longest night, the winter solstice, which means literally "standing still." It marks the shortest day of the year, the official start of winter, when the sun is the farthest distance from the earth. Tradition says that nature and all her creatures stop and hold their breath to see if the sun will turn back from its wanderings, if the days will lengthen and the earth will once again feel the sun's warmth.
We gather to be with one another in our darkness and in the darkness of December for a quiet, contemplative service of scripture, poetry, prayer and beautiful, tender music to anticipate the coming again of the Light of the world.
HOLDEN PRAYER ADEVENT SERVICE
Wednesday, December 6 @ 7pm
Service of light using Holden Evening Prayer liturgy and song. This will
be the only service we do with Holden Evening Prayer. Please join us
to mark the season of Advent, of waiting and darkness, together. Join
us for a mid-week Advent service again on Wednesday, Dec. 20, 7 pm,
where we will have a special "Blue Christmas" service.

Wanted Prayer Warriors!!
As you know, prayer is so important in our faith journey. OSL has a Prayer Calling Chain.
I would like to invite anyone interested in being a prayer warrior to call me, so I can put you on the list. This is open to any person, any age, as long as you can call others and pray.
Here is how it works: Sandy Loney will get the first call, she will then call the next person on the list, and that person will call the next one, and so on. Everyone in the calling chain
will get a list of participants and their phone number and the order to call.
Call Sandy's cell phone at 515-332-5677 or email [email protected] to become a prayer warrior. Also, if you, or someone you know needs prayers, please call or email Sandy.
Be Sure To Check Dates/Availability During The Summer Season & Holiday Seasons !!!
Catch The Spirit! The Spirits Of Kindness would love to have you join their group!
