Remember when videogames werethe hot resource being mined bya Hollywood desperately search-

ing for new ideas? This very magazineran a column in the February 2000 issue

about how, after a glut of game-to-filmadaptations like Mortal Kombat and Super MarioBros, there were scores more in the works,including Duke Nukem, Sin, Command &Conquer, Quake, Myst and Half-Life. None ofthem ever made it to theatres.

Now, three years later, there’s but one videogame franchise withclout in Movieland — Tomb Raider. Undoubtedly the most popularand profitable rework of the lot, the 2001 film Lara Croft: Tomb Raidersucceeded for at least a couple of reasons. First, its hero, digital babeLara Croft, had a larger following than most organized religions.Second, producers cast the biggest name of any of the videogameadaptations in the lead role. So, even if the plot didn’t grab viewers,watching Angelina Jolie jump around in a tight T-shirt was more thanenough for many.

And now, with the sequel Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Cradle of Life,both the unstoppable character and the actor who portrays herhave grown enormously. In “Rocking the Cradle,” page 34, Jolieexplains why the writers were more comfortable developing Croft’scharacter this time around, and how filming the first movie inCambodia — where she subsequently adopted a baby boy —changed her for the better.

The videogame-to-film trend may be dying down, but Lara CroftTomb Raider: Cradle of Life is also part of a new trend that’s, unfortu-nately, gaining momentum — sequels with unbelievably long titles.Blame it on Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, I guess, but it’sgotten to the point where newspaper and magazine editors will soonrevolt, renaming movies on the fly, just so they can fit the rest of thestory on the page. Two of our other interviews in this issue focus onsuch major-mouthful movies — Reese Witherspoon for Legally Blonde2: Red, White & Blonde and Arnold Schwarzenegger for Terminator 3:Rise of the Machines.

Check out “Blonde Ambition,” page 26 to find out what’s makingWitherspoon cry these days, and “Man of Mettle,” on page 20 to seehow Schwarzenegger responds to those who say he only did T3because he’s desperate for a hit.

Hollywood is still making the occasional movie that’s not part of afranchise. And the Tobey Maguire horse-racing drama Seabiscuit justmight be one of the best this summer. In “Lone, Cool Cowboy,” page30, shy, but brilliant, Oscar winner Chris Cooper discusses his pivotalpart in the movie. —Marni Weisz

X2 RAISES QUESTIONSI recently watched X2. It was amazingand exceeded the first. I was just wondering who played the part ofNightcrawler. I didn’t recognize hisface and I didn’t stay long enough tosee the cast. I also think the May issueof Famous needed an article on X2,there wasn’t much commentary on it.

I was wondering if you can settle a hot,brewing confusion that has been fester-ing within me ever since the opening ofX2. For the life of me, I could not findany information on the name of themutant who could melt into walls orbeds. There’s not one peep about themutant in the X2 website. What gives?

The mutant to whom you are referring isKitty Pryde (also known as Shadow Cat insome exclusive X-Men circles). She wasplayed by 18-year-old Katie Stuart who wasborn not too far from you, in Vancouver,B.C. We’re guessing the website skippedKatie’s character just because there were somany mutants and so little space. It was apretty small role. But she does figure moreprominently in the current issues of theUltimate X-Men comic book, if you’reinterested.

feminist hero? That question may beanswered in January when Quebec actorCaroline Dhavernas comes to the smallscreen as Jaye in the new Fox series,WonderFalls. The 25-year-old Dhavernasplays a Niagara Falls souvenir shop clerksaddled with the ability to communicatewith inanimate objects. The talkingtchotchkes want to help people, andthey’re using the surly Jaye to do theirgood works.

“She’s the worst person the universe

could have chosen for the job becauseshe doesn’t want to help,” says Dhavernason the phone from Montreal. “She’s avery narcissistic girl who doesn’t reallycare about anyone but herself. She studiedphilosophy at Brown and she dresses differently from everyone else. When theinanimate objects start talking to her shethinks she’s going crazy. But at one pointshe does what they tell her to do just sothey’ll shut up.”

The show, dubbed “Touched by a CrazyPerson” by its creators Todd Holland andBryan Fuller, cast Dhavernas as a sort ofmodern-day, grrrl version of Joan of Arc.While Dhavernas herself doesn’t hearvoices, she began her career as an eight-

year-old using her voice, dubbing filmsinto French.

By the time she was a teenager she wasappearing on a variety of teen-oriented TVshows in Quebec. Her big break came in1999 when she landed the role of MarilynBell in the CBC drama Heart: The MarilynBell Story. She’s also appeared in suchfilms as Lost and Delirious and TheBaroness and the Pig.

Acting runs hers blood — both her parents are actors — which makes youwonder just how dramatic the nightly familydinner was in the Dhavernas household.

“We talked about [acting] all thetime,” remembers Dhavernas. “Andthank God my parents understood what Iwas going through. I worked all throughmy teenage years and when I came homeat night they knew how hard I hadworked. Other parents, who don’t knowwhat happens on set, might not havebeen so understanding.”

However, even her parents might notunderstand her latest film role. Justbefore shooting WonderFalls, Dhavernaswrapped production on the first film ofdirector Peter Greenaway’s new trilogy,The Tulse Luper Suitcases: The MoabStory. The British director is known for hisvisceral and controversial films, such asThe Cook, the Thief, his Wife & her Lover,and Dhavernas is thrilled to have earned aspot in the avant-garde director’s movie.

“I have a great part,” says Dhavernas.“I play a character named Passion, aMormon girl from the 1920s. She’syoung, 16 years old, and she falls for themain character, Tulse Luper. But insteadof being sweet, she becomes very manipu-lative and gets him arrested so she can

get him into prison and abuse him sexually.She’s really out there. Just to be a part ofthat movie was fascinating for me.”

With an art house film to her name andthe lead in a promising TV series, Dhavernasis poised for success, a notion that doesn’tfaze the 17-year show-biz veteran.

“All this could change my life,”admitsDhavernas. “And if it does, well, I’mkind of used to it. I used to do a lot ofTV when I was a teenager and I wouldsign autographs, be recognized and dointerviews. So I know what it’s all about,at a smaller level. But if the series doesn’twork out, I’ll just continue what I wasdoing before. I really won’t be thatupset.” —Ingrid Randoja

Nasseri a residency permit, which would allow him to live in France or travel anywhere inEurope. Yet he won’t leave. It seems the years have taken a toll on his psyche and thoseclose to him say he is afraid to depart.

You can be sure of two things: the movie version of Nasseri’s life won’t be so depressing(Catherine Zeta-Jones is in talks to star as a love interest) and amidst current political tensions American Hanks will not be playing an Iranian. —IR

Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks willteam up for the third time this fall tomake Terminal, which focuses on a

man (Hanks) living inside a terminal of aNew York City airport. Sound implausible?Actually, Terminal is based on the real-lifestory of Merhan Karimi Nasseri, who’s beenliving inside Charles de Gaulle airport onthe outskirts of Paris since 1988.

It’s a sad and complicated tale thatbegan when the Iranian-born Nasseri, whohad been expelled from Iran and deemed apolitical refugee, arrived in Paris on hisway to England, where he planned to applyfor citizenship. But while in Paris his brief-case containing his documents was stolen.He boarded a plane to London anyway andwhen he arrived without papers he wassent back to France, where the Frenchauthorities arrested him for illegal entry.

A human rights lawyer pleaded his case,but the French government would not allowNasseri to step on French soil. Yet, sincehe had no passport, they had nowhere todeport him to. So he made the airport hishome, and has been there ever since.

He sleeps in the chairs of Terminal Oneand rises at 5:30 a.m., before travelersarrive, to wash up with an airline travel kit.He doesn’t have any money but airport shop-keepers consider him part of the de Gaullefamily and provide him with food and water.He refuses to accept donations of any kindand is known for his honesty (he’s twiceturned in lost wallets). He receives mail —cards at Christmas and a weekly subscriptionto Time magazine — and visitors, including

the 45-year-old star of Reservoir Dogs and Fargo called theclosings “irresponsible” and “dangerous.” A few days later,he and 11 others were arrested and charged with criminaltrespass and disorderly conduct when they rushed Engine204, a Brooklyn firehouse that had just been locked up forthe last time.

What gives Buscemi the right to share his opinion aboutsuch things? Fear not, weary celebrity watchers — theBrooklyn-born star actually has more credibility on this issuethan you might think. From 1980 to 1984 Buscemi was afirefighter with the New York Fire Department’s Engine 55 inLittle Italy. Plus, in what at first seemed like an urban legend, but later turned out to be absolutely true, Buscemieven grabbed his old gear and headed over to Ground Zero onSeptember 11, where he worked side-by-side with firefightersfor the next week, digging through rubble and helping tolocate remains. —MW

NOW APPEARING IN…Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines as a medstudent who hooks up with our hero John Connor (played by NickStahl, who takes over the character from Edward Furlong). It’sbeen 10 years since Connor last saved mankind, with the help ofArnold Schwarzenegger’s Terminator, of course, and now the pairmust do it all over again when a new cyborg (model KristannaLoken) is sent from the future to finish off the human race.

BIO BITS: Claire Danes’ early years would have made a good WBseries: A clever, introspective girl is born in New York City in theebbing moments of the 1970s (April 12, 1979 to be exact) andgrows up in a trendy SoHo loft with her older brother Asa, andher parents, Chris, a contractor, and Carla, who runs a toddler’sschool out of their home. (Danes once described their abode asa “transformer home — preschool by day, home by night.”)

When Danes was five, she caught a glimpse of Madonna onTV and was inspired to become a performer. She started indance, and then moved to acting at the age of 11 when she wasaccepted into the prestigious Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute. Itwas around that time that the Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore filmGhost was shooting in her neighbourhood. Being a huge Swayzefan, Danes dragged a friend over to the set to try to meet herhero. But the pair had spent so much time picking out just theright clothes and perfecting their makeup that by the time theygot there Swayze was gone.

Just a couple of years later, when Danes was only 13, she got

her big break when she was cast as 15-year-old Angela Chase onthe smart teen drama My So-Called Life, and the whole Danesclan moved to L.A. Although only 19 episodes of the witty,ahead-of-its-time series were ever made, the show garneredDanes a substantial fan base, one which followed her to the theatre for films like Little Women and Romeo + Juliet.

In 1998 Danes took a semi-break from movies to attend Yale,where she’s been studying English and graphic design. But lastyear she decided to take a year off to stoke her film career, duringwhich she filmed T3, The Hours, Igby Goes Down and the indiemovie It’s All About Love.

LOVE LIFE: At 15 she fell in love with musician Andrew Dorff,brother of actor Stephen Dorff. The relationship lasted six monthsand Danes was so devastated when it ended that she sought therapy. • Winona Ryder introduced her to the music of Australiansinger/songwriter Ben Lee, and after Danes had fallen in love withhis tunes, Ryder surprised her by bringing Lee to her 18th birthdayparty. Danes and Lee have been a couple ever since.

ON GETTING HER DEGREE: “Yale is a really healthy environment forme to be in…. I thought I’d seen as much ambition and drive asthere is to be seen in Hollywood, but that’s obliterated by thestudents at Yale. espite years of legal woes,rabid gossip and false starts,Terminator 3: Rise of theMachines is now a reality.And Arnold Schwarzenegger,the brawny star who made

the T-800 model Terminator into a pop-culture icon with his performancesin Terminator and T2: Judgment Day, isback as the heroic cyborg.

Rumoured to be one of the mostexpensive movies ever made — with areported price tag of $175-million — thefilm’s plot has been one of the best-guarded secrets around Tinsel Town,thanks to Xerox-proof scripts, secrecyagreements and numbered screenplays.But this much we do know: Terminator 3takes place a decade after the events ofT2. Sarah Connor has died, and her son,John (now played by In the Bedroom’s NickStahl instead of Edward Furlong), is inseclusion. The plans to assassinate Johnhave been stepped up, and the machinesof the future send a T-X female cyborg(Kristanna Loken) to finish the job. SoConnor and his girlfriend (ClaireDanes) team up with another Arnold-model Terminator to fight the powerfulTerminatrix. Jonathan Mostow (U-571)takes over directing duties from JamesCameron.

“It took a little tweaking to get itwhere we wanted it, but the screenplayreally works,” says Schwarzenegger,dressed casually in jeans and a tight-fitting T-shirt on this L.A. afternoon.“This is the third Terminator that I'vealways wanted to make.”

Some, however, have speculated thatthe 55-year-old former Mr. Universedid T3 for reasons besides artisticexpression.

[Q] What’s your response to those who sayyou’re doing T3 because your last couple ofmovies (Collateral Damage, End of Days) didpoorly at the box office and you need a hit?[A] “People love to gossip and come upwith negative scenarios, so that doesn’tsurprise me they would say that. Sure,some of my last few movies haven’t hadbig domestic grosses, but they have donevery well overseas. So T3 is not some desperate move on my part to revive mymovie career. My career is doing fine.”

[Q] Why did you want to do this film now, morethan a decade after the last one?[A] “We always planned that there wouldbe a third one. But what you don’t plan

for is how difficult it is to put some-thing together like another Terminator.Different people had ownership over theproperty and they were constantly fighting over it. They simply didn’t getalong. So all of their personal problemscaused a lot of wasted time. Eventually,though, everyone got under one roof,shook hands and said, ‘Let's do it.’”

[Q] Reports are, you’re getting one of thebiggest paycheques in Hollywood history —$30-million plus a share of the profits. That'spretty nice pocket money.[A] “Yeah, but by the time my wife [MariaShriver] gets through with it, trust me, itwon't be that much [laughs].”

[Q] It was common knowledge that yourTerminator and T2 co-star, Linda Hamilton,was never going to do T3. But Edward Furlongwas initially supposed to come back as JohnConnor. What happened?[A] “The director of T3, JonathanMostow, felt that he wanted to look at various other young actors for therole, because the character is older in this movie. He really liked the workthat Nick Stahl had been doing, and he felt like he would make a perfectJohn Connor. It was really an artisticdecision.”

[Q] So Edward wasn't dumped because of hisdrug arrests?[A] “I don’t know if that had anything todo with it. I really don’t.”

[Q] After 12 years, can you just slip back intoTerminator mode?[A] “Oh yeah. I'm not saying it’s easy.Nothing is easy, but I think I’ve had plenty of time to prepare for it. I read thescript, met with the director and specialeffects department and started to get thefeeling of him again. If you talk about itenough, you slowly become the characteragain. I didn't have a problem before.And I don’t have a problem now.”

[Q] C’mon, isn’t it a little harder playing theTerminator now that you’ve gotten older?[A] “Everything is fine as long as I stayaway from my motorcycle crashes[laughs]. I’ve been doing stunts in filmssince T2 with running and crashes. I’vebeen exercising continuously. If Istopped exercising and gained weight I would have a problem. As long as Ikeep my same weight and do my cardio-vascular and stretching exercises andweight training, then I’m fine.”

[Q] Is anything tough for you?[A] “Being patient. It’s hard to have thepatience to put the appliances andmakeup on. When you’re 30, you havemore patience. At my age, it's hard to sitin the makeup chair for five hours. OnBatman & Robin, it was five hours put-ting the skin colour and the eye lenseson. You had to calculate an hour aheadof time when you wanted to go to thebathroom. And someone had to unscrewyou so you could sit down. That getsmore annoying when you get older.”

[Q] What was your favourite part of making thefirst Terminator?[A] “The favourite part of it was justbeing able to work with Jim Cameron.He was at a point where he was consid-ered this little, unimportant, B-director.Then, when I went on the set andworked with him, I realized the guy wasa genius.”

[Q] Well, that leads to the obvious question: Whyisn’t James Cameron directing Terminator 3?[A] “For a lot of reasons, really. Initially,he worked on it a lot, but since wenever knew when the legal problemswould be solved, he needed to move onto other projects. He was tired of waiting. � �

“As long as I keep mysame weight and do my

cardiovascular andstretching exercises andweight training, then I’m

I mean, he made Titanic while we weretrying to get this movie going….Anyway, Jim and I will be back togetheragain for True Lies II.”

[Q] True Lies II is actually going to see thelight of day? [A] “True Lies II is happening. It’s instone. Jim finished the script a fewmonths ago. But I’m not sure it willshoot this year. I’ve been away for a longtime doing Terminator 3, and it’s not mystyle to go away again so quickly and doanother huge movie. I like to do onemovie a year at the most.”

[Q] Do you think the internet is changing theway movies are made and marketed?[A] “I think that computers are a verypowerful force. We saw that, forinstance, with Collateral Damage. We putall this information up and the firstweekend I think we had something likesix- or seven-million hits. It was extraor-dinary, the interest.”

[Q] Do you think our increasing reliance oncomputers and technology may come back tobite us? I mean, they’ve already developedcomputers capable of artificial intelligence.So how far-fetched is the Terminator storylineof machines trying to replace human beings?[A] “Not far-fetched at all, because it’shappening today, in small ways. We’vedeveloped machines which do tasks thathuman workers used to do. Computersand machines are making some of us

obsolete. In fact, with the way CGI hasbeen developing, you don’t really needlive actors anymore. They could do awhole movie with a CGI version of meand no one would know the difference.I’m close to being out of a job [laughs].”

[Q] Are you strictly a big-budget action star orwould you ever do a little art-house flick?[A] “I’d love to do a small, low-budgetmovie. But we all get so stereotyped inthat we all get the movies that they haveseen us in already…. When I say to a pro-ducer of a smaller film, ‘I would haveloved to have done that,’ they usually say,‘Well, we only had $12-million to shootthe movie and that would have onlytaken care of your first few weeks ofwork.’ But I say, ‘I’d do it for free if yougive me a back-end deal [a share of theprofits]. It makes no difference. I’m notcash-strapped.’ I always say, even withTerminator, ‘Pay me the money later ifyou think you need it now to shoot themovie. I have plenty of cash.’ But whathappens is they don’t like to give it to youlater on because they know if the moviedoes well then it is more money for me.On Twins, I made more money than anyother movie in my career, because I did itfor free and got the back-end.”

[Q] Do you think we’ve come to judge manliness by the standards you've set in your movies?[A] “I hope not, because they are justcharacters. And they are larger-than-lifecharacters. You’re not necessarily a realman just because you can beat up analien or a bad guy. I’d like to think thatI’ve contributed to the re-emergence ofthe hero or the heroic character. But ittakes more to being a man than justbeing overly masculine. A real man issomeone who cares for his family andprovides for them, shows love for hiswife and kids and someone who tries tomake this world a better place to live. Ido those things in my own life, and Ihope that is what influences people, notthe characters I’ve played in my movies.I used to want to be like John Wayne orGary Cooper when I was a kid. But as Igrew older, my idol, or the biggest influ-ence in my life, was my father. I thinkpeople are smart enough to know thedifference between movie charactersand real men. At least, I hope so.”

It’s been a frenzied week, and itappears to have taken its toll onthe normally calm, cool ReeseWitherspoon — she seems a weebit blue on this sunny Septembermorning. Everything is going

great on the L.A. set of her sequelLegally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde(“I’m having more fun than I did on thefirst one,” she says), and she’s stillmonths away from discovering she’spregnant with her second child withactor/hubby Ryan Phillippe, so it can’tbe morning sickness.

What in the world, then, could havethe terminally cheerful star of Electionand Pleasentville looking and acting so glum?

“Last week, it was back-to-school timefor my daughter Ava, so we’ve beendealing with lunch boxes and ther-moses and tears over the separation —my tears, not hers,” says the Nashvillenative with a teary-eyed laugh. “She’sonly three, so she’s in preschool. She’sonly gone half-a-day, but it’s beentough. I really miss her. A lot of themoms sit outside on the bench and pretend that we’ve gotten in our carsand driven away. But we all sit there andcry. We’re a pathetic sight.”

Witherspoon may be one of the highest-paid performers in Hollywood(reportedly taking home more than$12-million for Legally Blonde 2), and atalented and versatile actress (she just

wrapped the period piece Vanity Fair inEngland), but first and foremost, she’s awife and mother.

“I simply refuse to get caught up in allof the glamour and hype of working inshow business,” Witherspoon says, feelingmore relaxed now that she’s confessedher preschool anxieties. “I love acting,but it’s just my job. I have a husband Ilove very much and a daughter whomeans the world to me. They come first.In the scheme of things, there are moreimportant things in life than worryingabout a bad hair day or making sure youlook good for the paparazzi. It’s calledmarriage and motherhood.”

“Hey, these are my work duds,” shesays with a laugh. “Believe it or not, Ishop a lot at the Gap and Old Navy. Ihave to have clothes that wash easily,that food like peanut butter and jellywon’t stain. Listen, I had to change threetimes before I got here. I was wearing aChloe ensemble until hot chocolatebecame this morning’s disaster. I just figured it wouldn’t look good if the starand producer of a major motion picturemet members of the press in a designeroutfit with hot chocolate all over it. I dowant to have some of kind of decent rep-utation in this town.”

The movie Witherspoon is talkingabout is, of course, Legally Blonde 2: Red,White & Blonde. Aside from being thestar and executive producer, the sequelis the first film made by Witherspoon’sown company, Type A Productions.

Wait a minute…she cries at having toleave her child at preschool, but she’staking on additional responsibilities asthe executive producer of Legally Blonde 2?That’s quite a contradiction.

“I know, it sounds like I’m talking outof both sides of my mouth,” the 27-year-old admits, “but I like what I do, andI’m in a position to choose the thingsthat I want to do. My popularity hasgiven me a chance to create the kind ofopportunities that I’ve always wanted.

Which is great for my career. But I’malso like every other working mother. Ithink you have to learn to balanceschedules. When your kids are inschool, you have to measure every deci-sion that you make professionally,against your personal life. It’s hardsometimes. But when it’s something asimportant as the sequel to my biggestfilm ever [a $96-million domesticgross], you just have to work even harder to make sure everything in yourlife balances out.”

Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde,directed by Charles Herman-Wurmfeld,opens with Witherspoon’s character, ElleWoods, happy, engaged to her boyfriendEmmett (Luke Wilson reprising hisLegally Blonde role) and working for aprestigious Boston law firm. Her feelingstoward her workplace begin to change,however, when she discovers that the par-ents of her pet Chihuahua, Bruiser, arebeing experimented on by a cosmeticsconglomerate her firm represents.

“Elle becomes very disenchantedwhen she finds out the company thatshe’s been representing is up to nogood,” Witherspoon explains. “They aredoing some bad things, and when shetells them about it, the firm fires her. SoElle decides to take the issue toWashington to try and get this lawpassed for animal rights. But she knowsnothing about the government. She hasno idea how to get the law passed, butshe’s determined.”

However, Elle has a little trouble balancing her lobbying duties and per-sonal life as she fights to get “Bruiser’sBill” passed.

“She’s trying to plan her weddingand pass a bill, and she thinks she cando it all by May,” Witherspoon addswith a laugh. “She’s like, ‘No, I canhave it all!’ Invariably, like in real life,some of it falls by the wayside. But it’s areally, really inspiring movie. I’m learninga lot about our political system that Ididn’t know.”

While Witherspoon says there are noplans to film a Legally Blonde 3 (“I guessthat will depend on how well Red, White& Blonde does on opening weekend,”she admits), TV viewers could be gettinga weekly dose of Elle and her fish-out-of-water antics if the Legally Blonde pilot(also directed by Herman-Wurmfeld) ispicked up by a network. Although she won’t play Elle on the series,Witherspoon will be able to watch overher trademark film persona since Type

A is producing the show. “Elle made me fall in love withpink, so I feel like I owe her,” Witherspoon says with a laugh.

Although she had a number of projects planned after thejust-finished Vanity Fair — from the Honey West film (basedon the ’60s action series) to a sports picture about femaletennis players — Witherspoon’s acting commitments arenow on hold due to her pregnancy. Unaware, during ourinterview, that she would be expecting another child (due inDecember), she was quick to admit that she and her husband were anxious to give daughter Ava ElizabethPhillippe a handful of siblings.

“Both Ryan and I absolutely love children, we want to havea ton of them,” she says gleefully. “I love kids, because I thinkthere’s something so great about how honest they are.They’re so innocent, so open and ready to accept things.Children are such a special gift. I’m ready to be a mom when-ever nature decides it’s time.”

And, as they did with Ava, Witherspoon and Phillippe willcontinue to do whatever is necessary to keep making moviesand ensuring their children live as normal a life as possible.

“Whenever Ryan’s working, I am the primary parent, andwhenever I am working, he’s the primary parent, so we alwaystravel together,” Witherspoon explains. “We try to get asmuch normalcy as we can. Whenever we travel abroad, we getan apartment or home where we can cook and our baby cango to play dates or preschool.

“I started making movies when I was sixteen (The Man inthe Moon), so I got to have a normal childhood,” she con-tinues. “I don’t ever want to rob a child of mine of theirs,because childhood is so important to what kind of personthey’ll be in the future. I have great parents and they let mebe who I wanted to be, and I think I did okay. You can doanything you want if you’re willing to work hard enough forit. I want to be an actress and have a wonderful family —and be proud of both of them. I don’t think that’s too muchto ask for.”

Lone, coolCOWBOY

om Smith was the kind of man Hollywood used to makemovies about back when GaryCooper would’ve played thelegendary, yet real-life, laconic

cowboy. But it’s only now that Smith isriding across the big screen in thismonth’s Seabiscuit, and it’s with anotherCooper in the saddle — Chris Cooper.

“He’s a real mythic character, so it wasimportant that I convey some of that.But at the same time, as an actor, it’s myjob to play the reality of Smith,” saysCooper. The freshly Oscar-anointedthespian (he won Best Supporting Actorfor his sadly pathetic [and poetic] turnas a toothless orchid thief in last year’sAdaptation) is sitting in a hotel suite over-looking New York’s Central Park on acold December day.

Unfortunately, given that Smith’s lifewas described as having the “etherealquality of hoof prints in windblownsnow,” in Laura Hillenbrand’s best-selling novel Seabiscuit: An AmericanLegend, it was often difficult to deter-mine just what the reality of his life was.

Born in the late 1800s, when the westwas still wild, Smith felt more at homeon the open range than in the company

of men, something to which Cooper sayshe can relate. Native Americans calledhim Lone Plainsman, white settlerscalled him Silent Tom, and only horsesknew him well, they said. He herdedcattle and hunted mountain lions andbroke mustangs for the British cavalryduring the Boer War. He was a rodeostar, so the story goes, and an Indianfighter and a bank robber, too.

“It was interesting trying to separatefact from fiction with Smith,” saysCooper.

Fact is, steel and steam robbedSmith of his way of life. And it wasn’tuntil he happened to cross paths witha horse named Seabiscuit, during theGreat Depression, that he did some-thing truly legendary. Thoroughbredracing was in its infancy back then, butit did some growing up when Smithhelped transform the knock-kneednag into the equine equivalent ofMichael Jordan.

Now, 65 years after the horse with thesad little tail and eggbeater gait becamethe biggest newsmaker of the day, withmore headlines in 1938 than Hitler orLou Gehrig or Clark Gable, Hollywoodhas finally gotten around to committing

the story to celluloid. And while it may be called Seabiscuit,

and all the media attention might focuson Tobey Maguire as the half-blind former prize fighter who jockeyedSeabiscuit to the winner’s circle, makeno mistake — this dark horse in thesummer blockbuster derby is just asmuch Smith’s story. Just don’t expectCooper to have a lot of lines of dialogue, talking was never in his character’s nature. And that makesplaying Smith an even bigger chal-lenge. “It’s about achieving a stillnessthat conveys feeling and emotionsunderneath,” says Cooper.

“It’s pretty amazing what Chris does,giving this strong silent type some realdepth,” said Maguire in a phone inter-view a few months earlier. “I think hewould’ve liked to do more riding in thefilm, though. He seems to think I wasthe one having all the fun.”

In Hillenbrand’s novel, on which thefilm is based, she describes Smith as a“pleasingly terrifying” man with a “shovelof a jaw” and a “colourless translucenceabout him that made him seem as if hewere in the earliest stages of progressiveinvisibility.” It wasn’t until Cooper

walked into the room that I understoodwhat she meant.

A stark man, square-built, with a hardmouth and a drift of white hair peakinga broad, pale face, Cooper looks thepart of a horseman. He even walks witha slightly bow-legged swagger. Andwhile he knows his way around horses— he grew up on his father’s Missouricattle ranch and appeared in bothLonesome Dove miniseries — he says hehas too much respect for real cowboysto ever call himself one. “What I do isimportant in it’s own way, but I’m anactor,” he says.

Cooper is hunched forward in hischair, knees together, hands clutched inhis lap, as though he’s trying to makehimself as small as possible. UnlikeSmith, who would often just walk awayfrom reporters’ questions, Cooper

knows that giving interviews comes withthe territory. That’s not to say he’sentirely comfortable with the process,and our conversation is perforated withlong pauses as his mind works over theperfect response to each question.

Cooper’s first exposure to acting wasduring high school in Kansas City whenhe joined the local theatre company asa way of keeping himself out of trouble.

“The guys I was hanging around withwere getting into trouble and I wantedto distance myself from them,” he says.“I loved architecture and I was good atdesigning things so I offered my servicesto build and paint sets.”

The experience turned him onto theidea of becoming an actor. “I got sotired of myself. It was suffocating,”Cooper explains. “So I found a way toexpress myself through theatre. I hadthese things I wanted to say or expressbut I couldn’t do it out there.”

After studying drama at the Universityof Missouri, Cooper moved to New YorkCity and made his Broadway debut inthe 1980 production of Of the FieldsLately. But it would be seven years untilindie director John Sayles recognizedhis talent and cast him in his first movierole, as a union organizer in the coalmining drama Matewan.

“I was foolish enough to think thatgreat things would come from this. Butfeature parts didn’t seem to come my

way after Matewan,” says Cooper. Hespent the next several years playing bitparts on television in things like MiamiVice, and building a résumé of characterparts in features like This Boy’s Life andGuilty by Suspicion. “It was made clear tome how quickly you can be forgotten.So now, I just take things as they come.”

One positive lasting effect ofMatewan was his friendship with Sayles,who wrote the role of Lone Star’s prodi-gal son of a Texas lawman specificallyfor Cooper. “John and I seem to alwaysbe on the same page, but when I readLone Star I was surprised he wanted mefor that part. I couldn’t see myself in it,”says Cooper.

However, the film’s success provedCooper could carry a movie andHollywood started seeing him in all sortsof roles — like Robert Redford’syounger brother in The Horse Whispererand Ethan Hawke’s brother-in-law inGreat Expectations.

In 1999, he was cast as a coalminerwhose son wants to be a rocket scientistin October Sky and then turned in achilling performance as a sexuallyrepressed Marine in American Beauty.“I don’t know why I always get cast as aguy who is emotionally restrained,”Cooper says with a laugh. “If you playtoo many characters who keep tothemselves, people will start to worry.”

And, of course, last year broughtAdaptation, the Charlie Kaufman-penned metamovie with Meryl Streepand Nicolas Cage. Cooper calls the film,which depicts how Kaufman’s failedattempt to adapt the Susan Orleannovel The Orchid Thief into a screenplayresulted in Kaufman inserting himselfand his imaginary twin brother into thefilm, a “screw you statement” toHollywood studios that “only seem toknow how to make formulaic movieswith car chases and guns and drugs.”

“My feelings on that are, for such asupposedly creative community, risk-taking is not a high priority. And I don’tthink the studios know what to do withme,” he continues. “After October Skythey sent me a lot of scripts about meanfathers. After Lone Star they sent me abunch of sheriff scripts. So I depend onindividuals who will take that risk andoffer me the chance to play somethinga little different.”

Angelina Jolie has always been drawn tothings dark and deadly. Her first crush wason Psycho’s Anthony Perkins, and as a teenshe planned to be a funeral director. She collected daggers and knives (“I have abunch of scars to prove it,” she says), read

books on Vlad the Impaler and has the Japanese word fordeath tattooed on her shoulder. Not to mention that sheused to wear a vial of Billy Bob Thornton’s blood aroundher neck as a symbol of her devotion.

But after a tumultuous last couple years, including thedemise of her marriage to Thornton, it seems AngelinaJolie may have finally found the light. And she attributesit all to the new man in her life, son Maddox.

“I finally feel connected to exactly what I should bedoing in my life and who I really am,” says Jolie, whosetrademark Gothic attire and makeup has been shed infavour of a fresh — dare we say it, wholesome — look thatreflects her much sunnier disposition these days. Thisbreezy summer afternoon she’s on location in Montreal— where she’s shooting Taking Lives, about an FBI profiler— dressed casually in cargo pants and a unique white T-shirt that indicates just what a doting parent she is.Instead of hanging her two-year-old son’s drawings on thefridge, Jolie has them ironed onto her T-shirts. “He didthis one for me at Christmas,” she says, as she points to thecolourful stick-figure collage on her chest. “As you canprobably tell, I’m pretty impressed with his artistic side.”

That film, whichbrought videogame vixen Lara Croft tolife, grossed $300-million worldwide andhas now spawned the much-anticipatedsequel, Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradleof Life. As Jolie tells it, shooting the firstTomb Raider in Cambodia, the home-land of her adopted son, opened hereyes to a whole new world. She nowspends much of her time campaigningas a Goodwill Ambassador for the UNHigh Commissioner for Refugees.

[Q] How did Tomb Raider bring about thischange in your life?[A] “I remember, when I first went [toCambodia], being completely shockedthat I wasn’t taught about the historyand genocide of that country when Iwas in school. I started to question a lotof things, and when you do that, yousuddenly realize there’s a lot in thisworld that’s not talked about, or peopledon’t think is important because yourcontinents don’t touch. So it was thatshocking revelation, combined withmeeting these people that have gonethrough so much suffering and yet areso kind, and so generous, and so open,that was so unbelievably beautiful tome. When I left the country after filming, I just felt so connected to it andmissed it enormously. I didn’t quiteunderstand it at first, so I went backwith the UN a few times and then I metMaddox. That’s when I really started tolearn more about the people and thecountry, and then decided to adoptfrom that country.”

[Q] What can we expect from Cradle of Life,compared to the first movie?[A] “It’s a little less of a fantasy.… I thinkthe first one was verging on making itreal while still crossing that fantasybridge, and this one is more of a solidaction-adventure. It’s sexier, darker andsmarter, I think. It’s the same LaraCroft, but she’s grown up a bit.”

[Q] Were there certain elements that youwanted to bring to the character that perhapsyou couldn’t in the first one?[A] “Yeah, that was a lot of it for me. Ithink people didn’t want to remove a lotof the videogame aspects…. But now wecan go 100 percent into her, and seesomething unique about her character.

A lot of her personality has finally beenable to come out.”

[Q] Are the stunts more elaborate for this film?[A] “There are some stunts that are quiteextreme. There’s stunts with me andsharks, with bulls, jumping off buildingswith a flight suit on...a lot of big ‘awe’situations. Like, in one scene we have toleave a room by repelling a hundredfeet upside down. There’s also a lot ofmotorcycle stuff.”

[Q] You hurt your ankle doing the last film. Didyou get injured on this one?[A] “[Laughs.] Oh yeah, I sure did.There’s a scene where I’m shooting a target while riding a horse, whichsounded lovely in theory. But it turnedinto riding side-saddle very fast, spin-ning a shot gun, and then shooting thistarget. Well it went well by the end, butit was one of the hardest things I’ve everdone in my life, just because everythinghad to perfectly sync up at exactly theright second. So there I was, trying tostay on this horse sideways, and thehorse wasn’t used to gunfire, which wasmade even worse by the fact that therewas also a helicopter flying over us. So Iended up getting a shotgun shell rightin my eye. It wasn’t pretty. I’m also

missing a bit of my elbow now too. I hada bit of a boat accident when we wereshooting in Greece. I figure that if we domore of these films, by the fourth orfifth one, I’ll be limping to the set missingmost of my limbs. I might just be able tohobble to set as this head with shoes.”

[Q] The first Tomb Raider had the best openingweekend for a film with a female lead. You mustwear that distinction as a badge of honour.[A] “Yeah I do, very much so. Especiallybecause in putting the film together, theywere throwing a lot of money into it, yeteverybody was very, very nervous if itwould have any success. They hadn’t seena certain kind of success with a femalelead unless it was a comedy, or had somesexuality, or science fiction to it. Just astraight action-adventure with a womanhadn’t been successful ever before.”

[Q] What distinguishes this film from all theother action-adventures out there?[A] “Well I guess everyone’s got theirthing, but what I personally liked aboutthis one is it’s high adventure in differentcountries. It’s the only real adventurefilm, ya know? We shot on the tops ofskyscrapers in Hong Kong, in the moun-tains of China, in Africa, on top of livevolcanoes, underwater in Greece.” � �

[Q] Did you bring Maddox on location?[A] “Oh yeah, he’s with me all thetime. It’s great. I mean, it’s funny forhim, because there are times whereI’m holding him at lunchtime and I’min a silver wetsuit with all theseweapons and knives all over me! Butfor him, lunchtime would be spentgoing in the water of the set at theLuna Temple and hanging out in allthese amazing places. It makes it morefun, and it makes me much more into

her as a character because I have a littleboy, and having his mom jumpingaround and hanging upside down andclimbing the walls is very funny tohim. He gets such a thrill seeing medo that stuff.”

[Q] Do you think he understands yet that thisis mom’s job?[A] “I don’t think he gets it that momdoes films — I think he just gets thatmom dresses a bit weird and jumpsaround a lot.”

[Q] But he probably thinks you’re the coolestmom ever.[A] “Yeah, he thinks I’m pretty funny.But I must admit, it can be hard onhim sometimes because of the jet lag.When we were in Hong Kong, I wouldbe shooting all day, but he had jet lag,so we would be up ’till three in the morning running through the hallways of the hotel because I had ababy with jet lag. But he’s riddencamels in the desert, and he’s riddenelephants in the jungle, and he’s swum in the oceans of Greece — he’sbeen everywhere and he’s only two. I’mreally trying to give him experiences Inever had.”

[Q] There have been a lot of difficulties inyour personal life over the past couple years.Do you feel you’ve matured as a result?[A] “Yeah, I really, really have. Travellingand learning a lot about other coun-tries and other cultures has had quite aprofound effect. Now I don’t forget,every single day, how fortunate I am justto have my family healthy and alive andto be able to give my child what heneeds to eat, ya know? I’ve spent a lotmore time focused on what I think ismore important in this world.”

[Q] You definitely seem much more together.[A] “Yeah, you’re right. I do.… I mean, tobe in Cambodia surrounded by peoplethat are such survivors and have so muchhumanity is just so life-altering. Youknow, when you go to one of those areas,whether it’s a war zone or a camp, andyou see all these volunteers from all partsof the world who have come to this placeto do something good for these peopleand to try and make things better, it’s themost amazing thing. There’s really not amore wonderful place to be, I think.There’s nowhere else I’d rather be.”

A STARR IS BORNWho can explain why this country produces such pissed-off girlsingers. We’ve spawned an angry Avril Lavigne, an analyticallyannoyed Alanis Morissette and the groovy, but politically perturbed,Kinnie Starr.

Starr, a Vancouver-based singer who combines trippy, sexy beatswith powerful spoken words and silky hip-hop rhymes, hasn’t brokenthrough to the mainstream like her counterparts Avril and Alanis,but that’s because she walks a far more interesting path.

She’s just released her third CD, Sun Again, which boasts hermost upbeat and catchy songs to date, recently finished a mini-tour, and is preparing for her Cirque du Soleil debut. That’s right,the fiercely independent artist who once dumped a major recordlabel to produce her own music, has been cast in the new Cirque

show, Zumanity, set to open in Las Vegas at the end of this month. But this isn’t your average, all-ages Cirque show.“It’s officially called an erotic cabaret, but it’s a sex show,”

says Starr on the line from Montreal, where she’s been trainingfor her theatrical debut. “It’s a very intimate production withabout 50 people, including the musicians, like me, who are partof the on-stage production.”

Zumanity, which is restricted to those 18 and older, cele-brates sexuality, but exactly how explicit the performers’ actionswill be, and how much nudity will be shown, is still under wraps.We can tell you that Cirque plans to pump spicy fragrances intothe theatre, and seating will range from cabaret stools, to loveseats, to very intimate duo sofas (tickets for which will be pricedat $190 U.S.).

It’s not every day that an indie artist gets an invitation from anentertainment goliath — in this case, one that churns out specta-cles with assembly-line precision.

“They were looking for people who are very sexy and raw,”says Starr. “They’ve cast from a whole range of people — fromstrippers, to professional ballet dancers, to athletes and martialarts people.

“When I first arrived, it was like, ‘Umm, you must be mistaken,I cannot possibly be in this show!’ The cast is stunning. I’m inshape and stuff, but I’m not a supermodel or f-ckin’ coquette. Iwear jeans and runners. But they’re pretty serious about theircasting. They knew what they were doing when they cast me, andnow I’ve come to accept it and trust them.”

She may trust Cirque, but does she feel comfortable invitingher progressive parents (her dad is a criminal defense lawyer andher mom is a psychologist) to the show?

“I’m not sure I want my parents to see it,” Starr says with anamused sigh. “They say they want to see it. I’m like, ‘Ohhh, Idon’t know…’”

It is just beautiful and dark. I just love thefather figure in that movie, the way Disney handles it. “The thing I worry about is them being scared and sad, andit’s the music that gets them every time. For some odd reason, every once and awhile, you clip out a photo and paste it up and take a lookat it. In the case of “Pascal’s Submarine,” I wrote it prettyfast, it all came out, and you’re loathe to change that.”

“Perhaps. You still approach it the same way, you prepareyour mind, body and spirit to go on stage. But, ultimately,once you step on stage, you’re usually quite shocked andawed by the feelings that surge through you. And you reallywant to chase those feelings, and you want to inhabit themas much as you can. In my case, subtlety is the first casualty,you know? [Laughs.] I often hear a little voice saying, ‘Pullit back, subtlety is cool.’ But I can’t help myself.”

Being the charismatic front man for The Tragically Hip,arguably the best rock band this country’s ever produced,just isn’t enough for Gord Downie. The singer known forhis distinctive angry goose quiver and full-body twitches,

is also an accomplished poet/solo artist. In 2001 he delivered CokeMachine Glow, his debut solo CD and accompanying book of poetry,and while the CD put the spotlight on Downie’s quieter musical talents,the book showcased his fertile imagination.

Last month Downie released his follow-up CD, Battle of the Nudes,another gem brimming with eclectic musical sounds and meditativelyrics. Famous spoke to the singer/poet from his home in Toronto.

WHAT ARE YOUR FIVE FAVOURITE FILMS?

“Number one would be The Ox-Bow Incident [1943]. It’s a perfect little film directed by William Wellman and starringHenry Fonda. It’s about frontier justice and vigilantism, andwas way ahead of its time in terms of what it was trying to sayabout the great old west. Wellman was a quirky director whoused to obscure people’s faces as they were delivering lines soyou couldn’t see their eyes. • Number two is Spartacus [1960].I could name any number of Stanley Kubrick films, butSpartacus is pretty fantastic; infinitely watchable on a grandscale, and it’s got an incredible cast, starting with KirkDouglas. • Number three is Macbeth [1971], directed byRoman Polanski. It’s goddamn beautiful. It’s just an incredi-ble, rock ’n’ roll rendering of my favourite play. The thingthat Polanski is so great at, which you can see in The Pianist allthese years later, is the idea of the man alone, the exile, theisolated figure. • Number four is The Lost Weekend [1945], by

For me, it’s about losingcontrol as an actor — being able to befree — while keeping control as thedirector. It’s schizophrenic, but it’s really good.”

DIANE KEATON “What I loved aboutdirecting Unstrung Heroes and HangingUp was the collaborative process. I love to collaborate. I wouldn’t know how not to. It’s an integral part of thecreative process.”

TOM HANKS “Directing is great — anightmare at the time, but very invigorating.After the Oscar hoopla Jonathan Demmesaid, ‘The most bodacious thing youcould do right now is just screw all thisother stuff and try to write and directyour own movie.’ I screamed, ‘I know!’But that’s what I did with That Thing YouDo!
