Preserving the Earth’s Environment and Creating a Society That Ensures Security and Safety with “Passion and Smiles” as Our Driving Force

The DENSO Group continues to squarely address various issues and present solutions in order to maximize the value of vehicles and minimize negative impact through our commitment to the automotive society.

The DENSO Group Long-term Policy 2020, which serves as the guiding principle, states that DENSO will make utmost effort to preserve the planet and ensure security and safety in society through its business operations.

The slogan “Protecting Lives, Preserving the Planet,

and Preparing a Bright Future for Generations to Come” represents the shared wish of 140,000 employees to become a company that always keeps people and society in mind.

I believe that the “passion and smiles” of each employee serve as the driving force to achieve the 2020 Goal and that they are the keywords for DENSO to achieve sustainable growth.

With “passion and smiles,” we work more closely with more stakeholders to create a “cycle of good” in society and achieve sustainability.

DENSO is tackling a host of issues facing society through its business operations and activities.

Fuel cel l vehic les (FCVs) are p o w e r e d b y h y d r o g e n t o generate electricity, and emit on ly water. Toyota re leased MIRAI, an FCV, in December 2014. DENSO delivers about 70 products for MIRAI to Toyota. Specifically, DENSO developed a cell monitoring unit, pressure hydrogen sensors, hydrogen charging ECU, etc. for FCVs, and increased the performance of the power control unit, fuel cell boost converter, radiator, cooling pump, etc.

DENSO developed an eco-friendly mobility system consisting of solar power generation equipment, storage batteries, ultra-light electric vehicles (LEVs), and a car-sharing function (vehicle management system) using mobi le terminals. The system was launched on the premises of the Anjo Plant (Aichi Prefecture) in May 2015. This Pico Grid System* was created in anticipation of a micro grid system for the efficient use of energy by connecting vehicles with homes and local communities. LEVs charged with electricity serve as “mobile power supplies” where necessary in the event of a power outage during a disaster.

64%

Refrigerator’s fuel consumption

compared with the auxiliary engine system

Conventional refrigerated trucks require an auxiliary engine or need to use the main engine power to operate the compressor of the refrigerator. DENSO and Hino Motors, Ltd. (Hino) jointly developed a system to uti l ize the energy

generated while driving and the energy produced by regenerative braking in hybrid vehicles. As a result, the refr igerator’s fuel consumption is reduced by 64% from the conventional system. The system was awarded the Minister’s Prize, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry in the FY2015 Grand Prize for Excellence in Energy Efficiency and Conservation (the Product and Business Model category).

The electric compressor is optimally driven by technologies to control the hybrid system and inverter, etc., thus significantly reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

Electronic fuel injection systems were introduced only in large motorcycles because it was difficult to reduce the size of parts. In May 2014, DENSO developed DIET-FI, an electronic fuel injection system for small motorcycles, by simplifying and cutting the cost of the injection system. DIET-FI has been used

in Honda’s small motorcycles, and is expected to become widely used in emerging countries.

To reduce the size of components, part of the functions of the temperature sensor is compensated by the control unit. The size and cost have been reduced while delivering the same performance as the conventional system.

The QR Code was developed by DENSO’s engineering division in 1994. Compared with conventional barcodes, the QR Code contains far more data, and offers high-speed scanning (more than 10 times faster), and multi-language support. The QR Code has been steadily improved and is now widely used around the world,

helping save time, resources, and energy in various businesses. In June 2014, the European Patent Office highly evaluated this accomplishment and awarded the “Popular Prize” to the six employees who developed the QR Code (who are currently affiliated with DENSO Wave Incorporated).

Children wearing donated helmets

In Thailand, many children are taken to school on motorcycles, but traffic fatalities occur frequently. This is par t l y because few ch i ld ren wear he lmets on motorcycles. In January and February 2015, seven DENSO Group companies in Thailand donated 612 helmets to elementary school students in Bangkok in collaboration with Asia Injury Prevention (AIP), an NGO that has been conducting traffic safety awareness campaigns in Asia. Leaflets and posters that encourage the wearing of helmets were put up, and a traffic safety event was organized with the participation of

about 300 people including government officials, police officers, university students, and local citizens.

Public road test on Minamichita Road in Aichi Prefecture n June 2014, DENSO launched public road tests to develop advanced driving support technology on Minamichita Road in Aichi Prefecture as part of the Vehicle Safety Technology Project Team organized by the prefectural government. Automated dr iv ing scenar ios in a s ing le lane and automat ic lane changes, etc. were tested to assist safe driving and reduce dr iver workload. At the 2014 ITS World Congress in Detroit in September, DENSO conducted demonstrat ions of driv ing assistance functions. Public road tests help identify issues that cannot be found on test courses. We analyze the test results to accelerate development of commercially available technologies.

A major chal lenge for the f resh food and agricultural products industry is to keep products fresh to retain quality and also to extend the freshness period of food that is stored and transported. DENSO developed a two-compressor/two-inverter refrigerator by utilizing the power saving and electrification technologies refined through the development of refrigerated trucks. We applied this refrigerator to containers, and started a demonstration experiment to prolong the freshness of jujube red dates in China in 2013 and peaches in Fukushima Prefecture, Japan in 2014. As the temperature of the refrigerator can be finely controlled for the food being stored, the peaches, which normally could only be stored for three or four days, were successfully stored for about three weeks.

A t hosp i t a l s , t he numbe r o f surgeries that require long, delicate work has been increasing, and there is growing demand from physicians to reduce physiological hand shak iness and fa t igue . DENSO deve loped a support robot to meet these needs in collaboration with a university and medical institute, and launched sales in April 2015. During surgery, the robot arm of iArmS supports

the physician’s arm by moving to the position that a physician wishes to move his or her arm. The built-in sensors detect the motions of laying, stopping, and holding the arm afloat, and automatically switches the support functions.

Notably, we encourage CSR procurement in collaboration with industry organizations to prevent issues related to human rights and labor and avoid the use of conflict minerals etc.

As the demand for motor vehic les increases in emerging markets, there i s a g row ing need fo r repa i r and maintenance serv ices for new and used vehicles. DENSO Corporation, Toyota Tsusho Corporation, and Aisin Seiki Co., Ltd. have jointly established a repair shop brand, “PIT & GO” to offer the latest high-quality services a n d q u i c k l y p ro v i d e a u t o m o t i v e components.
