Objective1.

The Project Work is the most important single piece of work in the engineering degree program.

It intends to develop a detailed understanding and a broad overview of the chosen subject. It

provides the opportunity for the students to demonstrate creativity, understanding and originality

in planning and organizing a large project spanned over a long period. It is the opportunity to putinto practice some of the techniques that have been taught during the program. Leaving aside the

level of academic achievement of individual student so far, it is the time to show the competence

and inspiration through the project, as it is worth about a quarter of the final semester marks. If

executed properly, the project can become most enjoyable and rewarding piece of work in the

degree course tenure. Keeping in view the importance of this course, it is worth spending timefor pre preparation of Project. The pre planning for the project starts from 6 semester onwards.th

When making selection for the Project Topic, it is essential to think carefully about the subject

keeping in view individual’s strengths and weaknesses. The help can be taken by consulting

library books or the internet. The projects may vary substantially in breadth, depth and degree of

difficulty. To achieve high marks in the projectstatus, the projects should be chosen carefully.

Depending on the difficulty level and amount of work involved, projects can be an individual or group project, with not more than four students in a group. Students have choice to make their

own project proposal or to accept the project assigned to them.

Staff Designed Proposals

For projects proposed by members of staff, the interested students should discuss the

project with the proposer as soon as possible. Projects will be assigned on first come first serve

 basis.Own Proposals

If the students have their own idea for an individual project it is their responsibilityto submit the proposal to the HOD/Coordinator well advance in time so as to enable

them to find the member of staff who is willing to supervise it.

4. Project Approach

Each project should follow the scientific method and should apply the problem-solving

approaches studied in earlier courses. In general, this includes:

Gathering Information: Make review of topic using the published literature as well as

textbooks and students’ reports from previous projects.

Planning: Define the project goals and organize a logical sequence of steps to achieve these

goals. This will vary depending on the project, ability to procure materials, availability of

equipment, etc.Regular Meetings: Meet regularly with the project supervisor to discuss the work done.

Record Keeping: Keep proper record of the data obtained as well the record of the activities

done.

Project life cycle should have mainly three stages:Theoretical Study: Further development and/or application of current theory to an existing

field.

Experimental Outcome:Laboratory investigation to obtain results from the theoretical

investigation.

Design and Development: Design process, coupled with prototype construction/development.

Before starting with actual work, it is necessary to understand the role of major contributors in

the project work.

Role and Responsibilities of Supervisor:

• To finalize the project title, an outline and a work plan after discussion with the student.

• To guide the students as from where to find information regarding project.

• To meet the students assigned to him/her on a regular basis, at least one meeting every

week on a prescheduled and agreed time. The initiative and independence of the student

should be encouraged, and the supervisor should avoid giving excessive advice.

• Assist the students in shaping the scope of the work and in understanding the implications

of work, especially when there are contradictory results.

• Advise and prepare the student to present his/her project results at the Pre Project presentation and final presentation.

• Read through the draft report and make necessary corrections/comments and return it to

the student within a week for final submission.

Above all the supervisors will act as the motivator and also evaluator for the work

being carried.

Role and Responsibilities of Student:

• Before starting the literature survey the student should have preliminary discussions with

the supervisor.• To prepare outline of the work plan.

• Meet the supervisor regularly (at least once a week) to show the work progress.

• Maintain a work diary of all the activities completed and the important decisions taken

after discussions with the supervisor.

• To ensure that each step of the project is completed as planned and within the expected

time frame.

• To keep the supervisor and department coordinator informed promptly of any problems

that may cause delays in carrying out of the project as planned.

• Maintain cordial relationships with all people interacting during the project phase, be

ethical in all conduct and maintain good discipline in the laboratory, field and other work

places.• To present the work during pre project presentation and submit the draft report and final

report in time.

5. Project Assessment

Project progress will formally be judged at stages mentioned below. In addition, the supervisor

will monitor the general progress throughout the duration of the Project Work tenure.

Stage I: Project Proposal (Annexure I)

This should include the Project Title and Objectives of the Project work being carried. It should

be submitted to the Department Head in around 500 words. The project proposal should clearlystate and justify the objective of the project as per the categories mentioned under section 2 i.e.“Project Topics”.

Stage II: Literature Survey (Annexure II)

This should include a detailed survey of the background to the project, including an overview of

the subject, discussion of any essential theories, a review of any important publications (text

books, research papers etc). The literature review involves the definition and initial

understanding of the subject area of your project. Material can be found from books, web, and

from journals. Some journal papers are very difficult to follow, so a fair amount of background

reading may be required.

The following four sections must be included in the literature review:

(i) Abstract: This should state what was reviewed and what the principal findings and their

significance are, in not more than 150 words.(ii) L iterature Review: This should include a detailed survey of the background to your

project, including an overview of the subject, discussion of any essential theories, a review of

any important publications (text books, research papers, web based information, technical data

sheets, etc.). It is not enough to just describe what is in the papers, such as summarizing what

appears to be the consensus for the best approach to a particular problem, and under whatconditions it may be the best, etc.

(iii) Conclusion: This should include the main inferences drawn from literature review together

with directions for future work.

(iv) References: References should be numbered and properly detailed like[1] Kai Hwang, “Advanced Computer Architecture,” TMH publications, 4 ed.th

[2] “Maiers J. and Y. S.

Application of Fuzzy Set Theory,” IEEE Transactions

onSystems, Man, and Cybernetics, Vol. 1, pp. 41-48, Jan

1985.[3] “Miller

Logic,”http://www.cis.upenn.edu/dale/1Prolog/index.html,

Literature review should be presented in the same format as the project report and be a

maximum of 1800 words (or around 6 pages of 1.5 line spaced 12 point Times New Roman

type). The written statement of objectives for project is to be submitted along with literature

review report. This will be used when assessing the demonstration and project report. The

literature survey has to be submitted in proper File Covers. It is expected that the literature review will serve as a basis for the introduction to the project

report. Beware of plagiarism. The Literature Review should be in individual’s own words.

Stage III: Pre Project Demonstration/Presentation

This is the opportunity to show off the work that has been done till that time and to demonstrate

that the working is being done in a right direction to achieve the stated objectives. Pre ProjectDemonstration should cover at least Design, Innovation, Technical Understanding and

Operation part (if possible).

Stage IV: Final Project E valuation

Instructions for completing the project report are contained in Annexure III . The project and

presentation will be judged in the following categories when it is finally presented:Designo
