University of Dhaka Admission Test 2009-2010 (GaUnit) ENGLISH

Read the following passage and answer the question I though 5:The consequence of global warming can no longer be ignored. Islands are sinking into the sea. The entire world knows

disaster to be caused by global warming. As the sea level continues to rise, many countries including Bangladesh facethe prospect of partially or fully disappearing into the sea. The prospect of Bangladesh losing 20 per cent of its islands

would spell disaster for at least 20 percent of its over 150 million people. At least twenty per cent of the earths landspace is similarly threatened by global warming. The consequences for the courtiers to be submerged by the sea partiallyof fully would be disastrous. Global warming would not spare even some of the cities of relatively more developed

counties. Among them, Bangkok, Manila and Jakarta also face the grim prospects.Climate change, no doubt, calls for a collective response from the international community. Experts have called for adrastic reduction in carbon dioxide emissions from the burning of fossil fuel. But there has been less of action and moreof lip-service so far. The United States is responsible for approximately one-fourth of worlds carbon dioxide emission. In the twentieth century, global warming doubled from 0.4 degrees to 0.8. But the temperature would rise sharply, unlesschecked in the coming years. By 2100, the sea level is expected to rise by 60 centimeters. In the worst-case scenario, however the sea could rise by 3.5 meters due to the melting of her caps in Artic and Antarctic. Global warming uscausing droughts in many parts of the earth. A change in rainfall patterns has become a matter of worry across the

world. Global warming is also adversely affecting agriculture.

    1. What was the rate of increase in global warming in the last century?

A Brief Review of Parts of Speech

Parts of Speech deal with words, words that make up asentence. While words make up sentences, each of them hassome distinctive uses, and then they are renamed, according to

their use, as Parts of Speech. Parts of Speech are eight innumber:

    a. Noun b. Pronoun c. Adjective

    d. Verb e. Adverb f. Prepositiong. Conjunction h. Interjection

    a. Noun is a word meaning the name of a person, place orthing; for example-

Amir Khan is a great actor. Chittagong is a nice place. Sincerityis a virtue.

N.B. Thing means (a) objects what we can see, hear, taste, touch, or smell; and (b) abstract features that can bethought of, but cant be perceptible by senses.

    b. Pronoun is a word used as a replacement for a noun;

such as-You, my friend, are a betrayer. She is a jolly girl.

    c. Adjective expresses the number, quantity, quality orconditions of noun & pronoun and extends the meaning ofthem; such as-

Patriots are courageous persons.Coxs Bazar sea-beach is the longest beach of theworld.d. Verb is used to express the action or state of a noun or apronoun; such as-

    He is a good student.

We are going to Pizza Hut.e. Adverb is used to modify the meaning of a verb, an

adjective or another adverb; such as-She is a very jolly girl.Usaine Bolt ran swiftly. Usaine Bolt ran very swiftly.

    f. Preposition is a word used with a noun or pronoun to showhow it is related to something else; such as-The book is on the table. Father entered into the room.

    g. Conjunctionjoins words or sentences; such as-You and your friend went there.I called her while she was reading.

    h. Interjection works to express the sudden unexpected

feelings of a noun or pronoun; such as-Hurrah! We became the champions. Alas! I am undone. As we said earlier, words are renamed as parts of speechaccording to their uses in a sentence, so we cannot tell that a

word is noun, verb or any other part of speech onl y after seeingit. To be sure, we have to observe the way it is being used in a

    sentence.

We will work unless it becomes dark. (Verb) The work has

already been done. (Noun)The aforementioned examples showed that the sameword can be used either as verb, or as noun or as any other partof speech. We will discuss the identification, formation and usage of

parts of speech. But topmost priority will be given on the usage

of parts of speech, as it is one of the most importanttopics of your preparation. Everywhere you will face the

questions related to correct usage. Then will come the formation& identification of them. Formation is needed to enhanceyour vocabulary skill and identification will strengthenyour basic knowledge on English. These will also be

discussed but with a less importance. In some universitiesother than Dhaka University, you may notice a fewquestions on these twos. That is why we emphasize most oncorrect usage. So, be serious about correct uses of parts of

speech. We suggest that the students with poor Englishknowledge give the most importance in correct usage of

    parts of speech.
